March 3, 2021

Dear SLHS Families, Students, and Community, It has been said, “Here today, gone tomorrow.” It’s a saying about something that lasts only a short time. This can be said of many things: Warm sunshine during winter, high school romances, snow in the spring, end of a sports season in the playoffs, summer nights without bugs, ice cream on warm summer days, excellent swells on Lake Michigan, etc. The list could go on and on. This idea has even been turned into songs by artists such as Ramones, Harem Scarem, and Keith Urban. In Mark 8, Jesus foretells His death and resurrection to His disciples. “And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again” (Mark 8:31). Jesus basically told His disciples, “I will be here one day, gone the next day, and be here again a 3 days later.” However, Peter did not like the idea of Jesus “being gone tomorrow.” Peter was not trying to be hateful, nor was he trying to be selfish. His intentions were sincere. He loved Jesus and he wanted to prevent the horrible series of events that his master had just outlined for His future. So, he prayed earnestly to Jesus, “Keep this from happening to you!” If Jesus would not prevent it, Peter would do his best to block Him in love. Jesus, however, resisted His dear disciple’s pleadings, even though He realized the prayer was offered in good faith. Why resist him? Because Jesus knew that, even though granting Peter’s request would result in a much better outcome for Himself, it would have doomed Peter, and us, to everlasting destruction. But this was not God’s plan. As God foretold of Jesus to the serpent (the devil) in Genesis 3:15, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will crush your head, and you will strike His heel.” God “wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4). What is that truth? The truth is that Jesus loves you. He has saved you completely from your sins. Your sins are forgiven. Heaven is yours. Believe it; it is true! As we continue through Lent and this life, many things may be “here today, gone tomorrow.” One thing that we can be certain of: Jesus is here today, He will be here tomorrow, and He will be here for all eternity. This is most certainly true. Have a great and blessed week. In Christ, Mr. Bult

LHS Trivia Night & Formal Dinner: Tickets are on sale before and after school this week (3/1-3/5) in Mr. Roeske’s Room (#118). Cost is $10/person. Trivia Night & Formal Dinner is from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 13 in the LHS Theater Lobby. Sign-ups for tables/teams will take place the week of March 8th. Note: As a replacement to winter formal, the dinner and Trivia Night will stick to the same dress code (formal wear)!

Volleyball Coach Needed: Lutheran High has an opening for a Varsity Girls Volleyball Coach. If you know of individuals who might be interested, please contact Athletic Director, Al Holzheimer, at [email protected].

Thank you: The Guatemala mission team would like to thank the parents, students and staff at Lutheran High for their generous contributions on the most recent dress-down day to our Guatemala mission trip. We can’t wait to use these funds to bless the children at Casa Aleluya with some fun activities and small, but meaningful gifts. This will also allow us to work on updating one of Casa’s dormitory rooms with new walls, flooring and windows. We are so blessed to be supported by a community that places such value in the work of being “the hands and feet of Christ.”

ACT Testing for All Juniors: (Contact Mr. Holzheimer at [email protected])

• Thursday, March 4: Juniors will begin preparations for their ACT tests by completing demographic information on their answer sheets and setting up their myact.org accounts.

• Tuesday, March 23: All of the Juniors will be taking the ACT Test. Please do everything possible to make sure your child is present and on time that day. Testing will take most of the day. There is no make-up date for the school-administered ACT.

Vocational Hour Opportunity for Students: The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Sheboygan is looking for volunteers to help run their live stream for Sunday services and mid-week services during lent. It requires about two hours on Sunday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and works with Facebook Live, digital presence, and a PTZ Camera. An ideal candidate adapts well with technology, can make immediate decisions with a high level of integrity, uses Facebook or similar platforms, and has an interest in producing a broadcast to support the online mission. They intend to have a rotation built so it is not every week. If interested, please see Mr. Bult or email him at [email protected].

Attention Seniors: Keep applying for those scholarships! The scholarship database is updated weekly. Please check the site regularly for any scholarships for which you might be eligible. People want to give you money, make sure you are taking advantage of it! Go to lutheranhigh.com, click on the Current Families tab, click on the green Counseling Resources box, the scholarship database link can be found under the Scholarships heading. For more information, see Mrs. Adameak or email her at [email protected].

Winterim 2021: April 6-9

What is Winterim? Winterim is a unique, innovative educational experience outside of our traditional curriculum. Students will acquire new knowledge, expand learning beyond the classroom, and explore interests. This year Winterim is taking place after Spring/Easter Break from April 6- April 9.

Are Students required to take a Winterim? Yes, all students in grades 9 -12 must participate in a Winterim course. Winterim days are counted as academic days in our school calendar. The Lutheran High attendance policy as outlined in the student/parent handbook applies during Winterim. Given the short, intensive nature of the Winterim, it is imperative that each student is in attendance each day. Students that are absent will be required to make up work and class time missed. As a graduate requirement, all Lutheran High students are required to take a Winterim each year that they are enrolled.

How is the course evaluated? All Winterim courses will require a three-four page paper due at the conclusion of the Winterim. Additional work expectations will vary from course to course. All papers must be completed within two school days of the last day of Winterim. All Winterim courses will be evaluated in the following manner:

• High Pass – Detailed understanding and demonstration of concepts listed in rubric. • Pass – General understanding and/or demonstration of concepts listed in rubric. • No Pass – Limited or no understanding and/or demonstration of concept in rubric.

Note: Students must receive a High Pass or Pass grade to complete the Winterim requirements.

What are the courses offered during Winterim? Many exciting courses that are being taught by our awesome faculty. Students will choose their unique pursuit of interest from the courses offered. Here are a few of the class titles:

• Be Prepared, Not Scared: Problem Solving • Outdoor Education & Adventure • A Christian Leadership Look at the Olympics • OK Mister, I’ll Make a Man out of You • American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Culture • Racquet Sports • Understanding and Engaging the Culture as a Christian Leader • Leadership Games • Calling All Content Creators • Coaching Basketball 101 • History in the Movies • God’s Wisdom and Design: Humanity’s Abilities • It’s His Lab • Work It Out Extravaganza — Mind & Body • Golf 101- A Good Walk Spoiled? • Theology and Film (Movies from a Christian Perspective)

(Continued on next page)

How/when do Students sign up for their Winterim class? Course descriptions will be posted on the LHS website (www.lutheranhigh.com) and in the Hallways at Lutheran High. Classes will be selected in this order:

• Monday, March 8: Seniors • Tuesday, March 9: Juniors • Wednesday, March 10: Sophomores • Thursday, March 11: Freshmen

If a student misses their day to sign-up, they will have until 8:00 a.m. the following day to submit their choices; otherwise they will have to wait until March 12. Students will be divided evenly in all of the classes. Each student will select five different choices in order of preference. Every effort will be made to schedule students into their preferred classes.

The LHS Crusade for Bids Auction is Lutheran High’s biggest fundraiser of the year. You’ll find hundreds of items and packages to bid on, purchase cookies, caramels, and Wine & Dine grab bags outright, and make donations to our Fund-A-Cause, all online! Look for the Online Bidding links, squirrelly videos and instructions to be emailed out in late March. Bidding will take place on Auction Weekend, beginning Friday, April 16 and ending Sunday, April 18. CHANGE* The Crusade for Bids Auction will be an online-only event again this year. We had hoped to do a blended event with a limited crowd, but the LHS Board and Administration feel it is best to stay virtual at this time. This is a change from what you will see printed on the back cover of the Leaders Guide, which was printed earlier this month and is now in the mail. DONATIONS NEEDED! Each year our LHS families are asked to donate to our Wine & Dine Grab Bags. At the auction, each grab bag contains a bottle of wine and a gift card to a local restaurant. This year we will sell these grab bags on the online auction. The auction committee is requesting that each LHS family donate (1) $10 value bottle of wine and/or a $25 gift card to a Sheboygan County Restaurant (or more if you’d like). Especially this year, the gift card purchases will benefit our local business owners, too; so it’s a Win-Win!! Please make your donations to the LHS school office in the month of March. Your participation is greatly appreciated by all of our auction participants! If you have an item you’d like to donate to the auction, please contact Carmen in the school office at [email protected]. Items must be new. Items can be hand-crafted. Tickets to sporting events (Packers, Brewers, Badgers, etc.) are highly sought-after items for auction. And themed baskets are great sellers! All LHS families are encouraged to participate in the auction, either by donating, bidding, or volunteering. As the quantity of volunteers is less with the online auction vs. having a live auction here at LHS, the committee is still looking for people to help with procuring items. If you can help by calling on some businesses, please let Carmen know as soon as possible. Thank you!

Volunteers Needed: New time slots have been added to the Volunteer sign-up. The link to the Sign-up Genius is available at www.lutheranhigh.com. Click the Current Families option at the top of the page. When the Current Families page is displayed, scroll to the middle of the page and select “Neat Repeats Parent Volunteer Sign Up.” LHS Parents are encouraged to work eight hours a year at the store to receive a $200 tuition credit. COVID has decreased the number of people volunteering at Neat Repeats, while at the same time increasing sales as families experiencing financial difficulties shop at the store to help make ends meet. The Lord has blessed LHS richly through our “little” thrift store, please consider volunteering to help this blessing continue.
