I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Middle
Grades Education. I started teaching at South Charlotte in 2013 teaching 8th Grade
Science. This year I am thrilled to have the opportunity to launch South Charlotte’s
ProjectLeadtheWay© program. PLTW is a hands-on, project-based S.TE.M. class with a
focus on engineering. At SCMS, we currently offer two courses, Design and Modeling and
Automation and Robotics, for all students. Prior to teaching at SCMS, I taught 7th and 9th
grade English, math, and physics in Beijing, China at Beijing Royal School.

Myths… busted... 1. “Carbohydrates make you fat.” While refined carbs such as pasta, white bread and bagels can, in large quantities, increase chances of health problems like heart
disease, carbohydrates are your body’s primary source of fuel and fiber. Choose whole grain bread and pasta, beans, vegetables and fruit instead of processed
carbohydrates but don’t eliminate them altogether.
2. Avoid eating calories at night before bedtime. Listen, calories are calories no matter when they are ingested. Calories are a form of energy your body needs to
perform functions such as movement, cell growth/restoration and mental thought. Withholding daily recommended calorie allowances is not a good idea as it
hinders the body’s ability to function at maximum capability throughout the day and undermines the body’s natural ability to promote healing and growth at night.
Calories do not have to be used immediately and as long as they are used, calories will not be stored as fat.
3. Energy drinks are the way to go after a workout. The truth is that unless you’re exercising for more than 90 minutes at a strenuous level or the conditions for your
workout are extreme, water is the best liquid for you and your recovery. Energy drinks are very high in sodium and sugar which your body will not be able to use
appropriately in most cases.
4. A protein diet is the best choice following a workout. The truth is that while proteins are important, you should never skip vegetables, fruits and grains. There are
nutrients your body needs that cannot be fulfilled on a strict protein diet. If your plate is a rainbow of colors, feel confident that you’re getting the nutrients you need
(provided it’s not a plate of candy).
5. A fat-free diet is a smart diet….FALSE! Actually, a person needs some “fat” in their diet too. Most saturated fats are solid at room temperature and increase your
chances of heart disease. Unsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature and can help lower your cholesterol level, prevent heart disease and improve your immune
system. Good sources of unsaturated fats are nuts and fish. Avnet, Lily. "5 Biggest Mistakes People Make With Food And Exercise." The Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com, 02 June 2013. Web. 03 Apr. 2014.
