Winter Riding
Hello everyone. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to view the improved Tassie HOG website then I‘d recommend that you do so soon. There is some great information now available for everyone to view including a section on Chapter Safety
and group riding. Yep, winter is well and truly upon us but don’t let the weather prevent you from riding. It may be wet and cold at times but it is still possible to ride safely if you prepare your ride and riding gear beforehand. I’ve put together some information that will hopefully encourage you to dust off the bike and join other HOG members on winter rides that the Road Captains have organised. This information is based on my experience but there may be other information from the motorcycle industry, other riders or from the internet that may be more comprehensive or may differ from the information offered. It’s up to you to decide what makes sense to you and form your own opinion. Know what’s ahead. It’s a good idea to check the weather at least the day before and certainly the morning before the ride start time. Checking the weather allows you to organise the appropriate gear and prepare your bike for the conditions. To help you prepare our HOG website now has a link on the front page to the BOM (Bureau of Meteorology) site. Prepare your bike. Before any ride use T-CLOCK as a reminder to check over your bike. Tyres and wheels – Check tyre air pressure. Check tyres for uneven wear or cracks, there is still plenty of tread left and there is an adequate depth of grooves to allow water to be pumped away. Consult your tyre dealer if you have any doubts about the condition of your tyres. Controls – Check brakes, horn, indicators and other controls work. Lights - Check your headlights, running and tail-lights. Car drivers always need extra help to ‘see’ us on the road.
Oil – Check oil and brake fluid levels.
Chassis – Check for loose components, bolts or screws. Clean reflectors, windscreen and mirrors.
Kickstand – Check for damage or wear. If you’re not sure what you should be looking for when checking your bike then contact your local Harley service provider for help. Be visible. Car drivers find it difficult to see riders at the best of times, it’s even more difficult in low light conditions and when there is water spray around cars and trucks. When riding in winter or low
light conditions turn on headlights and wear helmets, jackets and pants that are reflective and/or high visibility. Although you could wear head to toe hi-vis green or orange riding gear, there is a fair amount of quality dark riding gear available that incorporates hi-vis or reflective piping and trim. Adding small reflective stickers to your helmet, ride gear or bike is a simple way to improve driver awareness. Be dry and comfortable. To make a winter ride enjoyable you need to have good gear to stay warm and dry. Keep the rain off your face by using a full shield with open face helmets or a full-face helmet. Other gear should include waterproof gloves, jacket, pants and boots. If you are not sure if your gear is waterproof try putting it on then have someone shower you with a garden hose. If you’re getting wet think about finding replacements. A good test for gloves is to fill a bucket with water, pull the gloves on, immerse up to the wrist and then wait for 5 minutes. For warmth use multiple layers of clothing. Just be aware that too many layers could restrict your mobility or vision. Wearing wet weather jackets or pants over your normal clothing helps to reduce the effect of cold air getting through to your skin. For those who want a little more warmth, I’ve been told handgrip and seat heaters are great accessories for winter rides. Ride to the conditions. Be aware of reduced grip when riding on wet or icy roads. Avoid riding on painted road markings and visible oil stains, as the grip is less than other sections of road. Also avoid riding through standing water as it may cover potholes or depressions in the road. When roads are frosty either delay your ride till later or choose roads that are dry and exposed to the sun. Ride smoothly. Reduce your travel speed as to match the weather conditions and further reduce speed if weather conditions deteriorate. When the road is wet ride your bike smoothly, avoid rapid acceleration or hard braking. When cornering, avoid quick direction changes or leaning your bike excessively. Ride with your bike fairly upright and shift your body weight to counteract the reduced lean angle. Other information. I’ve covered a few of the basics of winter riding above but now it is up to you to research other winter riding sources of information. I’ve listed a few websites sites that may be useful: http://www.mcnews.com.au/training/wet.htm http://www.ridermagazine.com/motorcycle-features/safety-tips-for-motorcycle-riding-in-the-rain.htm/ If you have any questions on winter riding or HOG rides please do not hesitate to contact me or a Ride Captain. See the HOG website for our contact details. Keep the shiny side up and see you on the next ride. Len While on the subject of HOG winter rides I should make you aware that sometimes, due to weather conditions, the Road Captain will be forced to cancel a scheduled ride. If there is significant poor weather before the first ride start time or there is poor weather forecast during the ride time it’s possible the ride will be cancelled. When a ride is cancelled members will be contacted via mobile phone SMS before the ride starts. So you can be contacted please ensure your phone details are up to date. Contact one of the HOG committee members if you need to update your details. Contact details can be found on the HOG website.

RIDE REPORTS:
LOH ride to Pier 1 in Ulverstone – 2 June
Hi Everyone
Sunday morning 2 June dawned bright and sunny but a tad chilly for our mid year LoH ride to Ulverstone. With too many layers on to count and feeling like a ‘michelin’ man, on the bike I got behind my gorgeous husband for the ride into HP. By the time we got there my fingers were so numb I could not feel them but nonetheless after lots of rubbing (Des offered all sorts of places for me to warm them!), circulation started to return.
We were soon on our way to Wattle Hill to meet up with the north-west Hoggers. At least by now, the sun had warmed somewhat and it was another fantastic day for riding.
Thanks to Rod who was our Road Captain from Wattle Hill and lead us to our destination, The Pier at Ulverstone where we all enjoyed some great food and a few drinks After lunch the manager (whose name escapes me) asked if we could line all the bikes up in front of the restaurant for a ‘photo shoot’. A big thank you to the manager and the staff – they were fantastic. The Pier will definitely be on the list for future rides.
We then said goodbye to our northwest friends and headed back home, via Exeter Pub, another favourite watering hole!
Thanks to everyone for another great HOG day out. Until next time, ride safe and stay upright.
