A message from your president:

Happy Spring from the Penn State Dairymen’s Club Board of Directors! Winter is finally gone, but not before one final reminder that there is no controlling the weather. As the temperature gets warmer and the plants begin to grow, it is a time to reflect and look forward to new beginnings.

The biggest news from the Dairymen’s Club has to do with a fresh restart to our milk bottle sales. After much angst about the future of our most popular fundraiser, we have found a favorable solution. We have just released a new milk bottle. Our 2017 milk bottle (coincidently the 17th edition) features the Pegula Ice Arena, home of the 2017 Big Ten Champion Nittany Lions. Campus Chatter: An Update from the Dairy Science Club

The Dairy Science Club is having an awesome spring semester. To kick off 2017, Dairy Science Club members assist-ed with the PDCA Dairy Judging Contest for adults and conducted a youth judging contest for 4-H and FFA members at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Members also assisted with the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association cheese stand.

Club members were very active at the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Convention in early February. More than 30 members helped to conduct the quiz bowl and jeopardy contests, while others partici-pated in the two events. Over 30 teams competed in the quiz bowl. Congratu-lations to the teams from Lancaster and Perry Counties for winning their divisions. Later in February, club members trekked to the University of Rhode Island for the NESA competitions. Penn State earned high institution honors, and Amber Gabel was named Outstanding Senior. On March 3, 43 club members and chaperones headed to Switzerland and Austria for five days. For many, this was a once-in-a-life-time trip. After landing in Zurich, students toured the historic town of St. Gallen and visited a farm that had an extensive agritourism business along with a dairy and cider operation. From there the group headed to Bregenz, Austria. Students went skiing and snowboarding in the alps at

Lech-Zurs on Sunday. Monday began with a tour of one of Austria’s leading Brown Swiss herds and then a visit to an operation that makes cheese from goat milk and uses the whey to manufacture cosmetics products. On Tuesday the group headed back to Switzerland for a tour of a leading chocolate manufacturer and a tour of the beautiful city of Lucerne. Swiss Genetics hosted the club on Wednesday for a tour of their production facilities and visits to three truly outstanding Brown Swiss herds. Finally, club members headed back to Penn State on Thursday. The quality of cattle, scenery and cultural landmarks were remarkable during our stay in Europe. There was no rest for our members because on that Saturday our club conducted the Pennsylvania Jersey Jeopardy contest in State College.

On March 18, the club hosted the spring judging contest. This is one of our oldest activities, and over 200 4-H, FFA, and collegiate contestants judged six classes from the Penn State herd. Later in March, our spring member tour headed to New York to visit the dairy farms of club mem-bers Alton Rudgers, Austin Milligan and Katie Sondericker.

April will also be a busy month with events such as Osteochallenge, the 5-kilo-meter walk/run that benefits the National Osteoporosis Foundation, and Meet a Farm Animal Day. The Penn State Dairy Expo will take place on Saturday, April 8, and the club awards banquet is scheduled for April 26.
