For example there is one ryu that does a tai-otoshi drop- ping down onto the right knee and calls it a karada makikomi. A bit a research divulged that they stopped teaching the actual karada makikomi dec- ades ago as it was "too dangerous". I've never had a student injured with karada makikomi. Maybe it comes down to how the technique is taught. I've seen this "too dangerous" rationale on numerous techniques. and its consequences

53rd Year

Q As I am working on the cross certification

form I have found that there are some tech-

niques that I have learned in the past that are

either a little different in form or in execution

That being the case when that happens I have

been adding a ldquosee commentrdquo note and will add

a comment page for further explanation I have

particularly noted this in the techniques that are

done in formal style When the form is done I

will send it the comment sheet copies of my

rank certificates and a generalized resume for

A Try not to worry about minor variances in tech-

nique execution We normally teach several varia-

tions of most techniques So dont feel that the tech-

nique shown in a video or book is the ONLY way to

do it Marc will let you know if something is awry For

Yes there are dangerous techniques in

jujitsu but I tell my students if a technique is danger-

ous (high risk of injury to a student) amp I only allow

execution up to a point

Q Can you get me a copy of Sensei Dave Clarkrsquos

Complete Guide to All Budoshin Jujitsu Tech-

niques from White Belt Through Tenth-Degree

Black Belt 051320

A You can download a copy of Sensei Dave

Clarkrsquos ldquoGuiderdquo from https

kataguideyolasitecom

You can also download additional alternate

instructional guides sent to me by a few of my prolific

black belts at httpsbudoshincomalternate-

instructional-guides

Q When will your classes resume in Santa Clari-

ta 051520

A [Most recent update] Over the 530 weekend I

had a conversation with the other instructors of the

program Our main issue was whether non-contact

practice for newer students was realistic [No] The

effect of CDC requirements [6rsquo separation masks

taking temperature etc] were really counterproduc-

tive [Yes] proper oxygenationCO2 issues due to

masks [definite ldquoYesrdquo] and boredom due to limited

activity [Yes] Essentially it was felt that the class

would be an ldquoexerciserdquo class rather than a jujitsu

class which is what students signed up for

Although none of these limitations and the

consensus makes me happy at this point wersquore

planning to resume classes in the winter or spring

2021 ldquoquarterrdquo once a vaccine is available Itrsquos really

difficult to effectively learn ju-jitsu without a training

partner

Q Once Irsquom cross-certified into Budoshin Jujitsu

up to what rank can I promote my students

051620

A You can promote students in your dojo up to one

rank below your rank Just remember whenever you

promote a student to any rank yoursquore putting your

reputation on the line as that student represents you

in many ways not just can they do the techniques

Q I received an anonymous email from you and

signed up for your newsletter as a result But

how did you get my email address 051620

NON-SEQUITOR by Niles

Irsquove been asked

[] to provide a monthly

thought for you to ponder

See it looks like Irsquom pon-

dering even though dogs

canrsquot really ponder

C-19 is such a bummer I canrsquot find a mask that

fits Glad Irsquom not a cat

Maybe you can ponder my thought and tell me what you think it means Irsquoll wag my tail and listen

Thank you for your support

Life sure has

changed since mid-

March Wersquore all wearing

masks in public [or

should be] hand-

washing has taken on

new value ldquosocial dis-

tancingrdquo has curtailed

almost every event and

the impact of C-19 has

affected our lives in a

major way [gross under-

statement] not with-

standing its massive economic impact

And then there was the George Floyd kill-

ing on May 25 which exposed the sore underbelly of

continuous racial discrimination and other injustices

To say this country is facing major challenges

is a gross understatement All three of these issues

have struck different nerves in our society and have

caused upheavals and challenges

Yet as a country we have stuck together for

the most part Sure our ldquocaserdquo numbers are higher

than any other country But thatrsquos because we have

freedom of the press Yes wersquore frustrated due to job

loss lack of socialization isolation and the conse-

quences thereof But thatrsquos because wersquore human

And yes most of us are doing our best to follow the

ldquorulesrdquo because deep down inside we realize theyrsquore

for our best interest and wersquod prefer to survive

We have also generally come together as a

country over the killing of George Floyd and others

because it was symbolic of a core conflict of what

American justice should be It too was a painful awak-

ening for many Americans but that criminal event

lighted a common flame that bound us together as

well regardless of race creed or color

But OMG The 4th of July is here With all that

has happened how do we celebrate What do we do

in lieu of getting the entire family together for a barbe-

que or picnic with all of our relatives doing fireworks

[where itrsquos legal] or going to a public place to watch a

really big fireworks display What can we do to re-

solve the racial and resultant economic inequities in

our country as we celebrate our countryrsquos birth mdash or

perhaps in some eyes a chance for our rebirth

We can bemoan our frustration with the way

things ldquoused to berdquo or we can look for positive alterna-

tives because that ldquosolution orientationrdquo is another

part of the American character

This country was founded on a concept of

ldquomanifest destinyrdquo [which unfortunately had some

negative shameful and costly implications in our his-

tory that are still very visual today] However our goal

was to build a country of freedom equality and with a

good quality of life We are still working on all three of

those But the key is that we can and are able to work

on improving ourselves and our country

Thatrsquos what this country is about and why we

are envied in the world Yes we do have problems

some of which were exacerbated by the C-19 pan-

demic and the visceral realization of what racial dis-

crimination can result in Yes our political system has

problems [Show me a political system in any country

that doesnrsquot have problems] But the world has

watched us persevere We work towards solutions

and we try to make America a better place to live

Thatrsquos because when united we are a community

and we are successful in reaching our goals mdash be-

cause we are all Americans

You may be saying Irsquom doing a lot of ldquoflag wav-

ingrdquo here mdash and maybe I am But itrsquos the 4th of July

and we need to celebrate all of US [upper and lower

case] We need to be positive We need to be united

We need to listen We need to care

Being stuck at home on the 4th due to C-19

may not be the best but itrsquos doable Or maybe a

peaceful protest rally or march is in order And we can

remember mdash this sure was a unique 4th

This yearrsquos 4th of July may be different but itrsquos

a lot better than not being able to celebrate anything

at all Maybe with our can-do attitude and our desire

for equality the American dream will come true to

more Americans

However I also follow all anti-spam rules which

generally means Irsquoll send you only one email per

email address and my email address is on the email

I sent you

Q Will how you teach jujitsu change because of

the Covid-19 CDC restrictions 051620

A Definitely yes for the short term But how and for

how long have still to be determined

One possibility is to offer Ju-Shin instruction

until training with an actual partner is ok Ju-Shin

very briefly is more of an exercise involving many of

the movements of traditional jujitsu Itrsquos very similar

to tai chi

Q When I looked at your technique helps for

hand throw amp wristlock takedown I noticed that

your grip isnrsquot as tight around the wrist which is

different from other sensei Irsquove learned these

techniques from Doesnrsquot your grip cause the

technique to be weaker 051720

A No The ldquogriprdquo is actually stronger because itrsquos

not a grip Itrsquos the pivot point or base for bending the

hand towards the forearm as much as possible Let

me try to explain [as shown in my YouTube video]

httpswwwyoutubecomwatchv=91WjsLtBcYQ

If you have your thumbs on the back of the

attackerrsquos hand just below the knuckles you should

be able to press the nerves there However if you

put all 8 fingers on the attackerrsquos palm or at his wrist

joint itrsquos actually much more difficult to bend his

wrist for two reasons First grabbing that way en-

couraged you to squeeze his wrist which makes it

more difficult to bend Second the more fingers you

have in the wrist joint the less you can actually bend

the wrist towards the attackerrsquos forearm mdash and

thatrsquos what causes the pain or locks up the wrist as

a ldquochildrdquo joint

If you can just place your index fingers or

index and middle fingers at the base of the at-

tackerrsquos hand you will be able to bend his wrist

much more with a lot less effort

Although Seki never mentioned the physics

of techniques [such as I did above] physiology

child-parent joint relationships or x-y-z axis he did

stress the importance of proper positioning bal-

ance smooth movement and calmness to effective-

ly use an attackerrsquos ki [momentum] If you watched

Seki closely you picked up the finer points of how to

more effectively execute techniques mdash and when

Seki saw that I did it ldquorightrdquo hersquod simply say ldquoAh Joji

you finally got itrdquo

Q Two questionsmdash why did Seki call you Joji

and why do you list website links [underlined

blue text] in your answers rather than fully ex-

plaining your answers at times 051820

A Joji is the Japanese translation of George my

first name He addressed very few students by

name

The reason I include hyperlinks is so that

questioners can get a more complete answer or ad-

ditional information Therersquos an old saying mdash ldquoa pic-

ture is worth a thousand words and a video worth a

millionrdquo Although sometimes my answers to ques-

tions are really long [sometimes too long in my way

of thinking] theyrsquore sometimes unavoidable Howev-

er if you can watch a video yoursquoll probably learn

more faster than by reading text Or some links will

take you to a more complete and well-constructed

answer

Q If I get a promotion in Budoshin Ju-Jitsu from

you and Irsquom a BJJY member do you send me my

colored belt 051820

A Although this is something I can do in my Santa

Clarita dojo for my students the cost of mailing the

belt to you is much more expensive [$1050 in the

US] than the belt itself [about $4-5] You can buy a

belt relatively cheaply at any martial arts store or or-

der one online

On the other hand if you are promoted to

shodan and yoursquore a BJJY and AJA member and

you pay for the AJA certificate of rank the AJA will

send you an embossed [with your name] belt for

free

Q Why do different ryu have different colors for

the same ldquokyurdquo rankings and some have more

kyu levels than others 051820

A There is no simple explanation as to why different

ryu have different colors for the same kyu rankings

Someone made the decision a long time ago and

the kyu colors stuck

In the ldquooldrdquo days you were a white belt until

you became a black belt because your belt was so

soiled and worn [The mythology was that if you

washed your belt your ldquoknowledgerdquo was washed

away] The closer truth is that the dingier your belt

was the more ldquoexperiencedrdquo you probably were

Seki kept belt ranks simple 7th kyu[beginner]

white 6th kyu green 4th kyu purple 3rd kyu brown

with green stripe 1st kyu brown with blue stripe dan

dent will want to do the whole test over and will ulti-

BENEFITS OF JUJUTSU by Andrew Yiannakis PhD

Japanese Jujutsu as

is the case with

many serious martial

arts provides partici-

pants with many ben-

efits and rewards

Some of the major

benefits are listed

below

1 The acquisition and

development of Supe-

rior Self Defense Skills (the skills derive in modi-

fied form from the battlefield techniques and tactics

developed by the samurai on the battlefields of feu-

dal Japan) Self defense doesnt get any more awe-

some than this

2 Empowerment (physical and psychological) On

one level this speaks to the physical benefits of pos-

sessing superior powers and awesome combat and

self defense skills On a psychological level em-

powerment speaks to self confidence decisiveness

self control increased determination and a no-quit

attitude

3 Personal Growth and Development including

brain stimulation and neural pathway support

(neurogenesis) improved cognitive functions and

longevity For example there is considerable evi-

dence that activities that stimulate the brain and

contribute to enhanced brain activity appear to slow

down the aging process and keep one sharp into old

age The complex demands of Jujutsu on the brain

and the various forms of bi-lateral and contra-lateral

training we engage in are clearly major factors in

efficient brain activity and mental health

4 Intrinsic Satisfaction The feelings that one gets

from engaging in self-rewarding activities such as

the martial arts and the accomplishments associat-

ed with them provide life with an important source

of meaning and enhance the quality of life

5 Jujutsu contributes to Superior Fitness and

Strength and Physical and Mental Health

6 Superior Quality of Movement A major benefit

of training using Internal Principles in Wa Shin Ryu

Jujutsu is enhanced Quality of Movement Quality

of movement is reflected in the ability to move flu-

idly with good timing coordination and control

and in the ability to apply centered action when ex-

ecuting technique

7 Superior Power with Less Effort Training in

Jujutsu with its emphasis on Japanese Internal Prin-

ciples1 enables students to move more fluidly and

efficiently and helps students generate superior

power with less effort or strength while execut-

ing technique (called Seiryoku Zenyo in Japanese)

Engaging in Jujutsu using Internal Principle is also

a safer way to play as injuries can be kept to a mini-

mum Since technique based on Internal Principles

requires less muscle and strength it is possible to

continue working out into old age even against

younger opponents

8 The acquisition of a Teaching License in Jujutsu

may be used to start your own dojo andor teach

private classes in Jujutsu and Self Defense A 4th

degree black belt is strongly recommended for start-

ing your own dojo (martial arts school)

9 Japanese Jujutsu teaches students the tactics

and skills of both Offense and Self Defense Of-

fensive kills are limited to combat-type situations and

clandestine operations while self defense skills are

extremely useful for everyone be it male or female

young or old

10 Opportunities for Supplemental Income OR

Self Employment as a Professional Martial Arts

Instructor With a black belt and a teach-

ing license those who are so inclined and interest-

ed may engage in a variety of income-producing ac-

tivities that include

a Consulting Opportunities with private compa-

nies the military and law enforcement agencies

may be available (this requires at least a 6th Dan

and extensive marketing activity)

b Supplemental Income A black belt in Jujutsu

(as in all martial arts) enables you to teach part time

in private dojos and in universities and colleges

everywhere You wont get rich but the supplemental

income is always a nice addition to the salary of your

day job

11 Japanese Jujutsu (especially in its Wa Shin Ryu

form) is a thinking persons art because combat

and self defense situations require that you think

and respond fast on your feet Combat situations

are in reality problem-solving environments re-

quiring the ability to see the action process it and

respond accordingly with the most appropriate tac-

tics and techniques To develop the ability to see

the action and respond quickly and effectively re-

quires extensive training in which students are

taught to either see or create targets of opportuni-

ty and apply the most effective techniques quickly

and without hesitation Japanese Jujutsu provides

such training opportunities using both contra lateral

and bi-lateral forms of training (among other forms of

training) under realistic high pressure conditions

and lots of sparring in Tachi Waza (standing) and

Newaza (on the ground) We also train students to

see targets of opportunity (openings) as they are

presented to them by their partnerattacker and we

also train students to create such openings using

various forms of deception (Damashi) The bottom

line is that such training stimulates the brain contrib-

utes to neurogenesis (growth of neural pathways in

the brain) and helps students think and act quickly

and effectively

12 Having rank in Japanese Jujutsu (especially a

black belt) is a Prestigious Accomplishment in

the eyes of society (and in the eyes of ones col-

leagues) that can open many doors for you espe-

cially when applying for jobs in occupations that car-

ry some risk These include such areas as the mili-

tary the police intelligence agencies foreign ser-

vice jobs abroad officer candidate school private

security work and of course teaching in challeng-

ing schools in high risk areas of town While there

are no guarantees having rank in Japanese Jujutsu

(especially a black belt) will often put you ahead of

most other job applicants and will enhance your

chances of getting the job you want Make sure

you include a copy of your rank certificate when ap-

plying for a job because the certificate lists the most

important values and attitudes we teach these in-

clude honor discipline responsibility hard work re-

liability perseverance and more that These are

among the most important attributes that employ-

erslook for in their employees In addition your jujut-

su certificate may well become the first topic of con-

versation during your job interview and will help

break the ice

13 Personal Attributes Japanese Jujutsu teaches

and helps develop a sense of empowerment a

strong work ethic self discipline concentration and

sustained focus a sense of personal honor respect

reliability responsibility and a no-quit attitude It is

also an excellent way to achieve a higher level of

mind-body harmonization and internal peace

14 Jujutsu can be an Avocation and a Serious

HobbyPreoccupation in Retirement A lot of peo-

ple in retirement often become couch potatoes or

lose meaning and focus in their life This could lead

to bouts of depression and a loss of purpose in life

A serious and engaging activity such as Ju-

jutsu (also true for many martial arts) will keep you

involved motivated and connected with your envi-

ronment and your more serious students this can be

a considerable source of satisfaction and meaning

and may well provide your life with focus and a

greater purpose through teaching and helping

young minds (and not-so-young ones) grow and de-

velop and become better people

1Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu is grounded in Japanese-based Internal Principles

The complete list of principles may be found in the authors book

JUJUTSU Traditions Ways amp Modern Practices (2019) The book is avail-

able on Amazon

Nidan] I think the cost of the teaching certificate

is $15-20[] By that time yoursquoll also have a

copy of the Black Belt Handbook which Irsquoll send

to you usually when yoursquore 2nd

or 1st brown

Q If I buy all of your in-print books at one

time do I have to pay separate postage for

each one That gets kinda expensive

052720

A No If yoursquore in the US and you order up to 4-

5 books at one time the postage is the same as

if you ordered 1 book Or you can order all 8-

dvds from my home-study course plus one book

and the postage is still the same as one book

[The quantity limit is based on how many books

4-5 amp or dvd sets 1 I can get into one Priority

Mail envelope]

If you live in another country the weight

of the parcel may also be a factor amp vary the

price

If PayPal charges a higher amount that

the postage for one book or just the dvd set I will

If youre the sensei of any martial art or ac-

tive in any organized sport you may be aware that

more amp more insurance companies are requiring

that you have some sort of Concussion Aware-

best sources for such a program is the Heads Up

by the CDC [Center for Disease Control] For more

bution to other instructors in your dojo students

Q I try to do the tekubi shimi waza [wristlock

takedown] but my uke just walks away from me

amp gets out of it How do I fix this 052720

A First go to httpsbudoshincomtraining-testing

technical-helpstwo-simple-fixes and https

wwwyoutubecomwatch

reload=9ampv=91WjsLtBcYQ to see how to properly

set up the wristlock takedown

Second and just as important you must

keep his whole arm extended straight AND it must

be kept inline with his shoulder and you must be fac-

ing his extended arm at a 90deg[right] angle If he

moves forward [which the technique will cause to

happen] exert more pressure with your thumbs to-

wards his shoulder joint as you sidestep with him to

keep yourself at a right angle to his extended arm

shoulders

Do NOT turn his hand downward to your right

as it will take the pressure off of his shoulder and

allow him to escape If you think your ldquoattackerrdquo is

not being compliant you can simulate an upward kick

to his ribs and then apply pressure with your thumbs

as you sidestep to your right Do NOT kick him in the

head It looks bad to onlookers itrsquos not necessarily

as effective because kicking his head will force his

head up amp back [opposite o the direction you want

him to go] and it will just make your ldquoattackerrdquo mad

at you if it isnrsquot an effective kick You donrsquot want him

mad You want him down

Q What kind of knife is best to train with

052820

A The safest is a rubber knife but they break easily

at the hilt amp cost the same or more than wooden

knives

Wooden knives donrsquot bend but you need to

sand the tip really dull to prevent potential tearing

cuts or actual stabs plus a flying wooden knife can

hurt someone if it goes flying

Foam ldquoshoto-kniferdquo [chanbarra] are very safe

for aggressive attackspractice but they simply donrsquot

look like or feel like a knife

Electric-shock knife [adjustable shock]

These are really cool and yoursquoll know what it feels

like if yoursquove been ldquocutrdquo However theyrsquore fairly

ldquofragilerdquo and very expensive thus useful in only very

controlled practice

When I have done demos in the past my at-

tacker has used a real knife with the edge filed total-

ly down It can still stab and actually went through

If you participated in the

2018 Arlington YMCA semi-nar please contact Sensei Kirby by clicking HERE Sensei has a gift for you

one of my mats at a demo decades ago [I take any

kind of knife very seriously I had a knife pulled on

me by an adult gang member while I was teaching at

a jr high school decades ago It wasnrsquot a smart move

on his part but I considered myself lucky]

Q Some of my students are interested in pur-

chasing mats for home use as my dojo is closed

due to the pandemic Where do you get your

mats from 053120

A I get my mats [4x8 velcro all 4 sides] from the Ath-

letic Connection Farmers Branch TX Their retail

price is $30099 My retail price is $23574 [including

shipping] For more info go to httpsbudoshincom

storemats I can come down on price dependent

on the quantity ordered

Two 4x8s should be an adequate area for al-

most any technique [including tomoenage ndash although

you might have to start off the mat] Three would be

nice When I was below black belt a friend amp I would

go to the local rec center to practice They only had

two mats With that space limitation we learned [for

fear of landing on concrete ndash it smarts ] how to ex-

ecute throws efficiently and where techniques would

put our uke [Two very important skills] Even today I

try to get my students to limit their technique execu-

tion to that 8x8rsquo space I did learn that many tech-

nique executions took much less space if done cor-

rectly and if you controlled your uke

Why 4x8 mats When I started teaching I pur-

chased 6x12 mats Their downside is that theyrsquore

much more cumbersome to move amp if damaged are

much more expensive to replace The 4x8s are more

manageable amp less expensive to replace

You may be able to get a discount from Athlet-

ic Connection if you have a resale number from your

state They usually have the 4x8s [blue] in stock amp

delivery is usually within a couple of weeks via UPS

Larger sizes must be shipped via ldquotruckrdquo

Let me know your thoughts

Q I need to change my website provider What

provider do you use 0604020

A Irsquove used InMotion Hosting

[wwwinmotionhostingcom] for decades Theyrsquore not

the least expensive but their services and technical

support is excellent I think theyrsquore an excellent

ldquobuyrdquo If you decide to go with them tell them I rec-

ommended them Maybe Irsquoll get some sort of credit

Q When can a black belt start teaching I re-

ceived my shodan several months ago but my

sensei wonrsquot let me teach a class or even one

technique Why not 060420

A Thatrsquos a question I canrsquot answer Yoursquove got to

talk with your sensei mdash and donrsquot ask him ldquowhyrdquo

That word is seen by most people as a challenge

You can send large files such as your belt rank

testevaluation videos [up to 5gbfile] to me via my

Hightail ldquodropboxrdquo at httpsspaceshightailcom

uplinkBudoshin [new link]for FREE as part of your

membership benefits

Just click on the link above amp follow the direc-

tions Also you do NOT have to register or sign up

with Hightail to send me these large files Itrsquos part of

your BJJY membership benefits

because it makes people feel defensivemdashlike they

have to prove something

A more positive approach would be to ask

ldquowhatrdquo can you do so that your sensei will allow you

to gain teaching experience If your sensei has

ldquoconcernsrdquo ask him ldquowhat are the reason[s]rdquo for his

concerns You may not be happy with what he says

but it will usually give you something to work with to

find a solutionmdashand hopefully get what you want

The reason for the ldquowhatrdquo approach rather

than the ldquowhyrdquo approach is that yoursquoll be much more

likely to get information from your sensei that you

can address and ldquowhat reasonsrdquo is a lot less threat-

ening than asking ldquowhyrdquo ldquoWhyrdquo is more vague can

be endless and most people who are asked why

they did something realize that the person asking

them ldquowhyrdquo has already passed a guilty judgment

on them

I learned this approach decades ago when

Irsquod occasionally be a ldquosubstituterdquo counselor at the

junior high [middle] school I taught at A wise older

counselor [whom the kids referred to as ldquomomrdquo]

told me that if you ask the student ldquowhat are the

reasonsrdquo for what you did yoursquore much more likely

to get an honest response and something you can

work with Sometimes the kidrsquos action was not really

his fault but someone elsersquos Sometimes even the

teacher was at fault As the ldquowiserdquo counselor told

me if you want to find the truth ask ldquowhatrdquo If you

just want to punish ask ldquowhyrdquo

Q In the ldquoMessage Boardrdquo of Budoshin-Online

you have the following blurb

SUPPORT THE BUDOSHIN JU-JITSU DOJO -- FOR

FREE Did you know that the Budoshin Ju-Jitsu Dojo is a 501c3 tax-deductible educational foundation This means that some of your expenses may be tax-deductible This also means that if you shop at Amazoncom you can set your Amazon account so that Amazon will do-nate 5 of your eligible purchases to the Budoshin Ju-Jitsu Dojo Just click here to be taken to smileamazoncom to make this possible Their website should answer any questions you might have

How did you do this and what do you use

the donated funds for 060720

A Our dojo formed a non-profit 501c3 educational

foundation with a corporate status decades ago ini-

tially to significantly reduce our liability insurance

costs [recommended by our insurance agent at the

time] long before the AJA insurance coverage be-

came a reality Also Amazon provides financial

ldquoassistancerdquo to qualifying non-profits So we put 2 and

2 together to provide an additional small revenue

source

The funds are used to help cover our normal

operating costs This includes helping to occasionally

defray the ldquomaterials feerdquo [that all students have to

pay] mdash if the student is a child and the parents indi-

cate that the fee is burdensome or even possibly their

AJA fee If we had other funding sources or more

people signed up with Amazon we might also be able

to subsidize uniform costs and city class fee charges

but wersquore a very long way from that

Page 2: UPCOMING EVENTS · rank certificates, and a generalized resume for review. 051020 A: Try not to worry about minor variances in tech-nique execution. We normally teach several varia-tions

Yes there are dangerous techniques in

jujitsu but I tell my students if a technique is danger-

ous (high risk of injury to a student) amp I only allow

execution up to a point

Q Can you get me a copy of Sensei Dave Clarkrsquos

niques from White Belt Through Tenth-Degree

You can also download additional alternate

instructional guides sent to me by a few of my prolific

black belts at httpsbudoshincomalternate-

instructional-guides

Q When will your classes resume in Santa Clari-

ta 051520

A [Most recent update] Over the 530 weekend I

had a conversation with the other instructors of the

program Our main issue was whether non-contact

practice for newer students was realistic [No] The

effect of CDC requirements [6rsquo separation masks

taking temperature etc] were really counterproduc-

tive [Yes] proper oxygenationCO2 issues due to

masks [definite ldquoYesrdquo] and boredom due to limited

activity [Yes] Essentially it was felt that the class

would be an ldquoexerciserdquo class rather than a jujitsu

class which is what students signed up for

Although none of these limitations and the

consensus makes me happy at this point wersquore

planning to resume classes in the winter or spring

2021 ldquoquarterrdquo once a vaccine is available Itrsquos really

difficult to effectively learn ju-jitsu without a training

partner

Q Once Irsquom cross-certified into Budoshin Jujitsu

up to what rank can I promote my students

051620

A You can promote students in your dojo up to one

rank below your rank Just remember whenever you

promote a student to any rank yoursquore putting your

reputation on the line as that student represents you

in many ways not just can they do the techniques

Q I received an anonymous email from you and

signed up for your newsletter as a result But

how did you get my email address 051620

A I got it from an email list my computer generated

However I also follow all anti-spam rules which

generally means Irsquoll send you only one email per

email address and my email address is on the email

I sent you

Q Will how you teach jujitsu change because of

the Covid-19 CDC restrictions 051620

A Definitely yes for the short term But how and for

how long have still to be determined

One possibility is to offer Ju-Shin instruction

until training with an actual partner is ok Ju-Shin

very briefly is more of an exercise involving many of

the movements of traditional jujitsu Itrsquos very similar

to tai chi

Q When I looked at your technique helps for

hand throw amp wristlock takedown I noticed that

your grip isnrsquot as tight around the wrist which is

different from other sensei Irsquove learned these

techniques from Doesnrsquot your grip cause the

technique to be weaker 051720

A No The ldquogriprdquo is actually stronger because itrsquos

not a grip Itrsquos the pivot point or base for bending the

hand towards the forearm as much as possible Let

me try to explain [as shown in my YouTube video]

httpswwwyoutubecomwatchv=91WjsLtBcYQ

Seki kept belt ranks simple 7th kyu[beginner]

white 6th kyu green 4th kyu purple 3rd kyu brown

with green stripe 1st kyu brown with blue stripe dan

ally award to younger students who really tried and

Q If I do well on a belt exam but really mess up

on 1-2 techniques that causes me to fail the test

do I have to take the whole test over again

051920

A If you has a really good attitude amp I felt you really

tried Irsquod give you 2-3 weeks to brush up on the

messed up technique[s] and then just test on those1

-2 techniques Surprisingly most of the time the stu-

dent will want to do the whole test over and will ulti-

mately do better overall as well

BENEFITS OF JUJUTSU by Andrew Yiannakis PhD

Japanese Jujutsu as

is the case with

many serious martial

arts provides partici-

pants with many ben-

efits and rewards

Some of the major

benefits are listed

below

1 The acquisition and

development of Supe-

rior Self Defense Skills (the skills derive in modi-

fied form from the battlefield techniques and tactics

developed by the samurai on the battlefields of feu-

dal Japan) Self defense doesnt get any more awe-

some than this

2 Empowerment (physical and psychological) On

one level this speaks to the physical benefits of pos-

sessing superior powers and awesome combat and

self defense skills On a psychological level em-

powerment speaks to self confidence decisiveness

self control increased determination and a no-quit

attitude

3 Personal Growth and Development including

brain stimulation and neural pathway support

(neurogenesis) improved cognitive functions and

longevity For example there is considerable evi-

dence that activities that stimulate the brain and

contribute to enhanced brain activity appear to slow

down the aging process and keep one sharp into old

age The complex demands of Jujutsu on the brain

and the various forms of bi-lateral and contra-lateral

training we engage in are clearly major factors in

efficient brain activity and mental health

4 Intrinsic Satisfaction The feelings that one gets

from engaging in self-rewarding activities such as

the martial arts and the accomplishments associat-

ed with them provide life with an important source

of meaning and enhance the quality of life

5 Jujutsu contributes to Superior Fitness and

Strength and Physical and Mental Health

6 Superior Quality of Movement A major benefit

of training using Internal Principles in Wa Shin Ryu

Jujutsu is enhanced Quality of Movement Quality

of movement is reflected in the ability to move flu-

idly with good timing coordination and control

and in the ability to apply centered action when ex-

ecuting technique

7 Superior Power with Less Effort Training in

Jujutsu with its emphasis on Japanese Internal Prin-

ciples1 enables students to move more fluidly and

efficiently and helps students generate superior

power with less effort or strength while execut-

ing technique (called Seiryoku Zenyo in Japanese)

Engaging in Jujutsu using Internal Principle is also

a safer way to play as injuries can be kept to a mini-

mum Since technique based on Internal Principles

requires less muscle and strength it is possible to

continue working out into old age even against

younger opponents

8 The acquisition of a Teaching License in Jujutsu

may be used to start your own dojo andor teach

private classes in Jujutsu and Self Defense A 4th

degree black belt is strongly recommended for start-

ing your own dojo (martial arts school)

9 Japanese Jujutsu teaches students the tactics

and skills of both Offense and Self Defense Of-

fensive kills are limited to combat-type situations and

clandestine operations while self defense skills are

extremely useful for everyone be it male or female

young or old

10 Opportunities for Supplemental Income OR

Self Employment as a Professional Martial Arts

Instructor With a black belt and a teach-

ing license those who are so inclined and interest-

ed may engage in a variety of income-producing ac-

tivities that include

a Consulting Opportunities with private compa-

nies the military and law enforcement agencies

may be available (this requires at least a 6th Dan

and extensive marketing activity)

b Supplemental Income A black belt in Jujutsu

(as in all martial arts) enables you to teach part time

in private dojos and in universities and colleges

everywhere You wont get rich but the supplemental

income is always a nice addition to the salary of your

day job

11 Japanese Jujutsu (especially in its Wa Shin Ryu

form) is a thinking persons art because combat

and self defense situations require that you think

and respond fast on your feet Combat situations

are in reality problem-solving environments re-

quiring the ability to see the action process it and

respond accordingly with the most appropriate tac-

tics and techniques To develop the ability to see

the action and respond quickly and effectively re-

quires extensive training in which students are

taught to either see or create targets of opportuni-

ty and apply the most effective techniques quickly

and without hesitation Japanese Jujutsu provides

such training opportunities using both contra lateral

and bi-lateral forms of training (among other forms of

training) under realistic high pressure conditions

and lots of sparring in Tachi Waza (standing) and

Newaza (on the ground) We also train students to

see targets of opportunity (openings) as they are

presented to them by their partnerattacker and we

also train students to create such openings using

various forms of deception (Damashi) The bottom

line is that such training stimulates the brain contrib-

utes to neurogenesis (growth of neural pathways in

the brain) and helps students think and act quickly

and effectively

12 Having rank in Japanese Jujutsu (especially a

black belt) is a Prestigious Accomplishment in

the eyes of society (and in the eyes of ones col-

leagues) that can open many doors for you espe-

cially when applying for jobs in occupations that car-

ry some risk These include such areas as the mili-

tary the police intelligence agencies foreign ser-

vice jobs abroad officer candidate school private

security work and of course teaching in challeng-

ing schools in high risk areas of town While there

are no guarantees having rank in Japanese Jujutsu

(especially a black belt) will often put you ahead of

most other job applicants and will enhance your

chances of getting the job you want Make sure

you include a copy of your rank certificate when ap-

plying for a job because the certificate lists the most

important values and attitudes we teach these in-

clude honor discipline responsibility hard work re-

liability perseverance and more that These are

among the most important attributes that employ-

erslook for in their employees In addition your jujut-

su certificate may well become the first topic of con-

versation during your job interview and will help

break the ice

13 Personal Attributes Japanese Jujutsu teaches

and helps develop a sense of empowerment a

strong work ethic self discipline concentration and

sustained focus a sense of personal honor respect

reliability responsibility and a no-quit attitude It is

also an excellent way to achieve a higher level of

mind-body harmonization and internal peace

14 Jujutsu can be an Avocation and a Serious

HobbyPreoccupation in Retirement A lot of peo-

ple in retirement often become couch potatoes or

lose meaning and focus in their life This could lead

to bouts of depression and a loss of purpose in life

A serious and engaging activity such as Ju-

jutsu (also true for many martial arts) will keep you

involved motivated and connected with your envi-

ronment and your more serious students this can be

a considerable source of satisfaction and meaning

and may well provide your life with focus and a

greater purpose through teaching and helping

young minds (and not-so-young ones) grow and de-

velop and become better people

lot of students make initially

Q Would I be required to come out and do semi-

nars 052120

A No Thatrsquos above the ldquocall of dutyrdquo and it can

be very expensive as well

Q Is it possible to become a teacher in this art-

--I have taught martial arts in the past 052120

A Once you secure shodan [1st black] in jujitsu

you can teach as all black belt grades are

teaching grades At some point after you reach

shodan and you are ldquoteachingrdquo Irsquoll ask for a vid-

eo of you teaching a class If I feel yoursquore doing

a good job Irsquoll request the AJA issue you a

teaching certificate [which is a pre requisite for

Page 3: UPCOMING EVENTS · rank certificates, and a generalized resume for review. 051020 A: Try not to worry about minor variances in tech-nique execution. We normally teach several varia-tions

This yearrsquos 4th of July may be different but itrsquos

a lot better than not being able to celebrate anything

at all Maybe with our can-do attitude and our desire

for equality the American dream will come true to

more Americans

generally means Irsquoll send you only one email per

email address and my email address is on the email

I sent you

Q Will how you teach jujitsu change because of

the Covid-19 CDC restrictions 051620

A Definitely yes for the short term But how and for

how long have still to be determined

One possibility is to offer Ju-Shin instruction

until training with an actual partner is ok Ju-Shin

very briefly is more of an exercise involving many of

the movements of traditional jujitsu Itrsquos very similar

to tai chi

Q When I looked at your technique helps for

hand throw amp wristlock takedown I noticed that

your grip isnrsquot as tight around the wrist which is

different from other sensei Irsquove learned these

techniques from Doesnrsquot your grip cause the

technique to be weaker 051720

A No The ldquogriprdquo is actually stronger because itrsquos

not a grip Itrsquos the pivot point or base for bending the

hand towards the forearm as much as possible Let

me try to explain [as shown in my YouTube video]

httpswwwyoutubecomwatchv=91WjsLtBcYQ

Seki kept belt ranks simple 7th kyu[beginner]

white 6th kyu green 4th kyu purple 3rd kyu brown

with green stripe 1st kyu brown with blue stripe dan

messed up technique[s] and then just test on those1

-2 techniques Surprisingly most of the time the stu-

dent will want to do the whole test over and will ulti-

mately do better overall as well

BENEFITS OF JUJUTSU by Andrew Yiannakis PhD

Japanese Jujutsu as

is the case with

many serious martial

arts provides partici-

pants with many ben-

efits and rewards

Some of the major

benefits are listed

below

1 The acquisition and

development of Supe-

rior Self Defense Skills (the skills derive in modi-

fied form from the battlefield techniques and tactics

developed by the samurai on the battlefields of feu-

dal Japan) Self defense doesnt get any more awe-

some than this

2 Empowerment (physical and psychological) On

one level this speaks to the physical benefits of pos-

sessing superior powers and awesome combat and

self defense skills On a psychological level em-

powerment speaks to self confidence decisiveness

self control increased determination and a no-quit

attitude

3 Personal Growth and Development including

brain stimulation and neural pathway support

(neurogenesis) improved cognitive functions and

longevity For example there is considerable evi-

dence that activities that stimulate the brain and

contribute to enhanced brain activity appear to slow

down the aging process and keep one sharp into old

age The complex demands of Jujutsu on the brain

and the various forms of bi-lateral and contra-lateral

training we engage in are clearly major factors in

efficient brain activity and mental health

4 Intrinsic Satisfaction The feelings that one gets

from engaging in self-rewarding activities such as

the martial arts and the accomplishments associat-

ed with them provide life with an important source

of meaning and enhance the quality of life

5 Jujutsu contributes to Superior Fitness and

Strength and Physical and Mental Health

6 Superior Quality of Movement A major benefit

of training using Internal Principles in Wa Shin Ryu

Jujutsu is enhanced Quality of Movement Quality

of movement is reflected in the ability to move flu-

idly with good timing coordination and control

and in the ability to apply centered action when ex-

ecuting technique

7 Superior Power with Less Effort Training in

Jujutsu with its emphasis on Japanese Internal Prin-

ciples1 enables students to move more fluidly and

efficiently and helps students generate superior

power with less effort or strength while execut-

ing technique (called Seiryoku Zenyo in Japanese)

Engaging in Jujutsu using Internal Principle is also

a safer way to play as injuries can be kept to a mini-

mum Since technique based on Internal Principles

requires less muscle and strength it is possible to

continue working out into old age even against

younger opponents

8 The acquisition of a Teaching License in Jujutsu

may be used to start your own dojo andor teach

private classes in Jujutsu and Self Defense A 4th

degree black belt is strongly recommended for start-

ing your own dojo (martial arts school)

9 Japanese Jujutsu teaches students the tactics

and skills of both Offense and Self Defense Of-

fensive kills are limited to combat-type situations and

clandestine operations while self defense skills are

extremely useful for everyone be it male or female

young or old

10 Opportunities for Supplemental Income OR

Self Employment as a Professional Martial Arts

Instructor With a black belt and a teach-

ing license those who are so inclined and interest-

ed may engage in a variety of income-producing ac-

tivities that include

a Consulting Opportunities with private compa-

nies the military and law enforcement agencies

may be available (this requires at least a 6th Dan

and extensive marketing activity)

b Supplemental Income A black belt in Jujutsu

(as in all martial arts) enables you to teach part time

in private dojos and in universities and colleges

everywhere You wont get rich but the supplemental

income is always a nice addition to the salary of your

day job

11 Japanese Jujutsu (especially in its Wa Shin Ryu

form) is a thinking persons art because combat

and self defense situations require that you think

and respond fast on your feet Combat situations

are in reality problem-solving environments re-

quiring the ability to see the action process it and

respond accordingly with the most appropriate tac-

tics and techniques To develop the ability to see

the action and respond quickly and effectively re-

quires extensive training in which students are

taught to either see or create targets of opportuni-

ty and apply the most effective techniques quickly

and without hesitation Japanese Jujutsu provides

such training opportunities using both contra lateral

and bi-lateral forms of training (among other forms of

training) under realistic high pressure conditions

and lots of sparring in Tachi Waza (standing) and

Newaza (on the ground) We also train students to

see targets of opportunity (openings) as they are

presented to them by their partnerattacker and we

also train students to create such openings using

various forms of deception (Damashi) The bottom

line is that such training stimulates the brain contrib-

utes to neurogenesis (growth of neural pathways in

the brain) and helps students think and act quickly

and effectively

12 Having rank in Japanese Jujutsu (especially a

black belt) is a Prestigious Accomplishment in

the eyes of society (and in the eyes of ones col-

leagues) that can open many doors for you espe-

cially when applying for jobs in occupations that car-

ry some risk These include such areas as the mili-

tary the police intelligence agencies foreign ser-

vice jobs abroad officer candidate school private

security work and of course teaching in challeng-

ing schools in high risk areas of town While there

are no guarantees having rank in Japanese Jujutsu

(especially a black belt) will often put you ahead of

most other job applicants and will enhance your

chances of getting the job you want Make sure

you include a copy of your rank certificate when ap-

plying for a job because the certificate lists the most

important values and attitudes we teach these in-

clude honor discipline responsibility hard work re-

liability perseverance and more that These are

among the most important attributes that employ-

erslook for in their employees In addition your jujut-

su certificate may well become the first topic of con-

versation during your job interview and will help

break the ice

13 Personal Attributes Japanese Jujutsu teaches

and helps develop a sense of empowerment a

strong work ethic self discipline concentration and

sustained focus a sense of personal honor respect

reliability responsibility and a no-quit attitude It is

also an excellent way to achieve a higher level of

mind-body harmonization and internal peace

14 Jujutsu can be an Avocation and a Serious

HobbyPreoccupation in Retirement A lot of peo-

ple in retirement often become couch potatoes or

lose meaning and focus in their life This could lead

to bouts of depression and a loss of purpose in life

A serious and engaging activity such as Ju-

jutsu (also true for many martial arts) will keep you

involved motivated and connected with your envi-

ronment and your more serious students this can be

a considerable source of satisfaction and meaning

and may well provide your life with focus and a

greater purpose through teaching and helping

young minds (and not-so-young ones) grow and de-

velop and become better people

able on Amazon

lot of students make initially

How did you do this and what do you use

the donated funds for 060720

A Our dojo formed a non-profit 501c3 educational

foundation with a corporate status decades ago ini-

tially to significantly reduce our liability insurance

costs [recommended by our insurance agent at the

time] long before the AJA insurance coverage be-

came a reality Also Amazon provides financial

ldquoassistancerdquo to qualifying non-profits So we put 2 and

source

The funds are used to help cover our normal

cate that the fee is burdensome or even possibly their

people signed up with Amazon we might also be able

I sent you

Q Will how you teach jujitsu change because of

the Covid-19 CDC restrictions 051620

A Definitely yes for the short term But how and for

how long have still to be determined

One possibility is to offer Ju-Shin instruction

until training with an actual partner is ok Ju-Shin

very briefly is more of an exercise involving many of

the movements of traditional jujitsu Itrsquos very similar

to tai chi

Q When I looked at your technique helps for

hand throw amp wristlock takedown I noticed that

your grip isnrsquot as tight around the wrist which is

different from other sensei Irsquove learned these

techniques from Doesnrsquot your grip cause the

technique to be weaker 051720

A No The ldquogriprdquo is actually stronger because itrsquos

not a grip Itrsquos the pivot point or base for bending the

hand towards the forearm as much as possible Let

me try to explain [as shown in my YouTube video]

httpswwwyoutubecomwatchv=91WjsLtBcYQ

Q If I do well on a belt exam but really mess up

do I have to take the whole test over again

messed up technique[s] and then just test on those1

-2 techniques Surprisingly most of the time the stu-

dent will want to do the whole test over and will ulti-

mately do better overall as well

BENEFITS OF JUJUTSU by Andrew Yiannakis PhD

Japanese Jujutsu as

is the case with

many serious martial

arts provides partici-

pants with many ben-

efits and rewards

Some of the major

benefits are listed

below

1 The acquisition and

development of Supe-

rior Self Defense Skills (the skills derive in modi-

fied form from the battlefield techniques and tactics

developed by the samurai on the battlefields of feu-

dal Japan) Self defense doesnt get any more awe-

some than this

2 Empowerment (physical and psychological) On

one level this speaks to the physical benefits of pos-

sessing superior powers and awesome combat and

self defense skills On a psychological level em-

powerment speaks to self confidence decisiveness

self control increased determination and a no-quit

attitude

3 Personal Growth and Development including

brain stimulation and neural pathway support

(neurogenesis) improved cognitive functions and

longevity For example there is considerable evi-

dence that activities that stimulate the brain and

contribute to enhanced brain activity appear to slow

down the aging process and keep one sharp into old

age The complex demands of Jujutsu on the brain

and the various forms of bi-lateral and contra-lateral

training we engage in are clearly major factors in

efficient brain activity and mental health

4 Intrinsic Satisfaction The feelings that one gets

from engaging in self-rewarding activities such as

the martial arts and the accomplishments associat-

ed with them provide life with an important source

of meaning and enhance the quality of life

5 Jujutsu contributes to Superior Fitness and

Strength and Physical and Mental Health

6 Superior Quality of Movement A major benefit

of training using Internal Principles in Wa Shin Ryu

Jujutsu is enhanced Quality of Movement Quality

of movement is reflected in the ability to move flu-

idly with good timing coordination and control

and in the ability to apply centered action when ex-

ecuting technique

7 Superior Power with Less Effort Training in

Jujutsu with its emphasis on Japanese Internal Prin-

ciples1 enables students to move more fluidly and

efficiently and helps students generate superior

power with less effort or strength while execut-

ing technique (called Seiryoku Zenyo in Japanese)

Engaging in Jujutsu using Internal Principle is also

a safer way to play as injuries can be kept to a mini-

mum Since technique based on Internal Principles

requires less muscle and strength it is possible to

continue working out into old age even against

younger opponents

8 The acquisition of a Teaching License in Jujutsu

may be used to start your own dojo andor teach

private classes in Jujutsu and Self Defense A 4th

9 Japanese Jujutsu teaches students the tactics

fensive kills are limited to combat-type situations and

extremely useful for everyone be it male or female

young or old

ing license those who are so inclined and interest-

ed may engage in a variety of income-producing ac-

tivities that include

a Consulting Opportunities with private compa-

nies the military and law enforcement agencies

may be available (this requires at least a 6th Dan

and extensive marketing activity)

b Supplemental Income A black belt in Jujutsu

(as in all martial arts) enables you to teach part time

in private dojos and in universities and colleges

everywhere You wont get rich but the supplemental

income is always a nice addition to the salary of your

day job

11 Japanese Jujutsu (especially in its Wa Shin Ryu

and without hesitation Japanese Jujutsu provides

such training opportunities using both contra lateral

and bi-lateral forms of training (among other forms of

training) under realistic high pressure conditions

and lots of sparring in Tachi Waza (standing) and

Newaza (on the ground) We also train students to

see targets of opportunity (openings) as they are

presented to them by their partnerattacker and we

also train students to create such openings using

various forms of deception (Damashi) The bottom

line is that such training stimulates the brain contrib-

the brain) and helps students think and act quickly

12 Having rank in Japanese Jujutsu (especially a

black belt) is a Prestigious Accomplishment in

the eyes of society (and in the eyes of ones col-

leagues) that can open many doors for you espe-

cially when applying for jobs in occupations that car-

ry some risk These include such areas as the mili-

tary the police intelligence agencies foreign ser-

vice jobs abroad officer candidate school private

security work and of course teaching in challeng-

ing schools in high risk areas of town While there

are no guarantees having rank in Japanese Jujutsu

(especially a black belt) will often put you ahead of

most other job applicants and will enhance your

chances of getting the job you want Make sure

you include a copy of your rank certificate when ap-

plying for a job because the certificate lists the most

important values and attitudes we teach these in-

clude honor discipline responsibility hard work re-

liability perseverance and more that These are

among the most important attributes that employ-

erslook for in their employees In addition your jujut-

su certificate may well become the first topic of con-

versation during your job interview and will help

break the ice

13 Personal Attributes Japanese Jujutsu teaches

and helps develop a sense of empowerment a

strong work ethic self discipline concentration and

sustained focus a sense of personal honor respect

reliability responsibility and a no-quit attitude It is

also an excellent way to achieve a higher level of

mind-body harmonization and internal peace

14 Jujutsu can be an Avocation and a Serious

HobbyPreoccupation in Retirement A lot of peo-

ple in retirement often become couch potatoes or

lose meaning and focus in their life This could lead

to bouts of depression and a loss of purpose in life

A serious and engaging activity such as Ju-

jutsu (also true for many martial arts) will keep you

involved motivated and connected with your envi-

ronment and your more serious students this can be

a considerable source of satisfaction and meaning

and may well provide your life with focus and a

greater purpose through teaching and helping

young minds (and not-so-young ones) grow and de-

velop and become better people

Nidan] I think the cost of the teaching certificate

is $15-20[] By that time yoursquoll also have a

copy of the Black Belt Handbook which Irsquoll send

to you usually when yoursquore 2nd

or 1st brown

Q If I buy all of your in-print books at one

052720

A No If yoursquore in the US and you order up to 4-

5 books at one time the postage is the same as

if you ordered 1 book Or you can order all 8-

dvds from my home-study course plus one book

and the postage is still the same as one book

more amp more insurance companies are requiring

Page 5: UPCOMING EVENTS · rank certificates, and a generalized resume for review. 051020 A: Try not to worry about minor variances in tech-nique execution. We normally teach several varia-tions

more effectively execute techniques mdash and when

Seki kept belt ranks simple 7th kyu[beginner]

white 6th kyu green 4th kyu purple 3rd kyu brown

with green stripe 1st kyu brown with blue stripe dan

ally award to younger students who really tried and

Q If I do well on a belt exam but really mess up

messed up technique[s] and then just test on those1

-2 techniques Surprisingly most of the time the stu-

dent will want to do the whole test over and will ulti-

mately do better overall as well

BENEFITS OF JUJUTSU by Andrew Yiannakis PhD

Japanese Jujutsu as

is the case with

many serious martial

arts provides partici-

pants with many ben-

efits and rewards

Some of the major

benefits are listed

below

1 The acquisition and

development of Supe-

rior Self Defense Skills (the skills derive in modi-

fied form from the battlefield techniques and tactics

developed by the samurai on the battlefields of feu-

dal Japan) Self defense doesnt get any more awe-

some than this

2 Empowerment (physical and psychological) On

one level this speaks to the physical benefits of pos-

sessing superior powers and awesome combat and

self defense skills On a psychological level em-

powerment speaks to self confidence decisiveness

self control increased determination and a no-quit

attitude

3 Personal Growth and Development including

brain stimulation and neural pathway support

(neurogenesis) improved cognitive functions and

longevity For example there is considerable evi-

dence that activities that stimulate the brain and

contribute to enhanced brain activity appear to slow

down the aging process and keep one sharp into old

age The complex demands of Jujutsu on the brain

and the various forms of bi-lateral and contra-lateral

training we engage in are clearly major factors in

efficient brain activity and mental health

4 Intrinsic Satisfaction The feelings that one gets

from engaging in self-rewarding activities such as

the martial arts and the accomplishments associat-

ed with them provide life with an important source

of meaning and enhance the quality of life

5 Jujutsu contributes to Superior Fitness and

Strength and Physical and Mental Health

6 Superior Quality of Movement A major benefit

of training using Internal Principles in Wa Shin Ryu

Jujutsu is enhanced Quality of Movement Quality

of movement is reflected in the ability to move flu-

idly with good timing coordination and control

and in the ability to apply centered action when ex-

ecuting technique

7 Superior Power with Less Effort Training in

Jujutsu with its emphasis on Japanese Internal Prin-

ciples1 enables students to move more fluidly and

efficiently and helps students generate superior

power with less effort or strength while execut-

ing technique (called Seiryoku Zenyo in Japanese)

Engaging in Jujutsu using Internal Principle is also

a safer way to play as injuries can be kept to a mini-

mum Since technique based on Internal Principles

requires less muscle and strength it is possible to

continue working out into old age even against

younger opponents

8 The acquisition of a Teaching License in Jujutsu

may be used to start your own dojo andor teach

private classes in Jujutsu and Self Defense A 4th

degree black belt is strongly recommended for start-

ing your own dojo (martial arts school)

9 Japanese Jujutsu teaches students the tactics

and skills of both Offense and Self Defense Of-

fensive kills are limited to combat-type situations and

clandestine operations while self defense skills are

extremely useful for everyone be it male or female

young or old

10 Opportunities for Supplemental Income OR

Self Employment as a Professional Martial Arts

Instructor With a black belt and a teach-

ing license those who are so inclined and interest-

ed may engage in a variety of income-producing ac-

tivities that include

a Consulting Opportunities with private compa-

nies the military and law enforcement agencies

may be available (this requires at least a 6th Dan

and extensive marketing activity)

b Supplemental Income A black belt in Jujutsu

(as in all martial arts) enables you to teach part time

in private dojos and in universities and colleges

everywhere You wont get rich but the supplemental

income is always a nice addition to the salary of your

day job

11 Japanese Jujutsu (especially in its Wa Shin Ryu

form) is a thinking persons art because combat

and self defense situations require that you think

and respond fast on your feet Combat situations

are in reality problem-solving environments re-

quiring the ability to see the action process it and

respond accordingly with the most appropriate tac-

tics and techniques To develop the ability to see

the action and respond quickly and effectively re-

quires extensive training in which students are

taught to either see or create targets of opportuni-

ty and apply the most effective techniques quickly

and without hesitation Japanese Jujutsu provides

such training opportunities using both contra lateral

and bi-lateral forms of training (among other forms of

training) under realistic high pressure conditions

and lots of sparring in Tachi Waza (standing) and

Newaza (on the ground) We also train students to

see targets of opportunity (openings) as they are

presented to them by their partnerattacker and we

also train students to create such openings using

various forms of deception (Damashi) The bottom

line is that such training stimulates the brain contrib-

utes to neurogenesis (growth of neural pathways in

the brain) and helps students think and act quickly

and effectively

12 Having rank in Japanese Jujutsu (especially a

black belt) is a Prestigious Accomplishment in

the eyes of society (and in the eyes of ones col-

leagues) that can open many doors for you espe-

cially when applying for jobs in occupations that car-

ry some risk These include such areas as the mili-

liability perseverance and more that These are

erslook for in their employees In addition your jujut-

su certificate may well become the first topic of con-

versation during your job interview and will help

and helps develop a sense of empowerment a

strong work ethic self discipline concentration and

sustained focus a sense of personal honor respect

reliability responsibility and a no-quit attitude It is

also an excellent way to achieve a higher level of

mind-body harmonization and internal peace

14 Jujutsu can be an Avocation and a Serious

HobbyPreoccupation in Retirement A lot of peo-

ple in retirement often become couch potatoes or

to bouts of depression and a loss of purpose in life

A serious and engaging activity such as Ju-

BENEFITS OF JUJUTSU by Andrew Yiannakis PhD

Japanese Jujutsu as

is the case with

many serious martial

arts provides partici-

pants with many ben-

efits and rewards

Some of the major

benefits are listed

below

1 The acquisition and

development of Supe-

rior Self Defense Skills (the skills derive in modi-

fied form from the battlefield techniques and tactics

developed by the samurai on the battlefields of feu-

dal Japan) Self defense doesnt get any more awe-

some than this

2 Empowerment (physical and psychological) On

one level this speaks to the physical benefits of pos-

sessing superior powers and awesome combat and

self defense skills On a psychological level em-

powerment speaks to self confidence decisiveness

self control increased determination and a no-quit

attitude

3 Personal Growth and Development including

brain stimulation and neural pathway support

(neurogenesis) improved cognitive functions and

longevity For example there is considerable evi-

dence that activities that stimulate the brain and

contribute to enhanced brain activity appear to slow

down the aging process and keep one sharp into old

age The complex demands of Jujutsu on the brain

and the various forms of bi-lateral and contra-lateral

training we engage in are clearly major factors in

efficient brain activity and mental health

4 Intrinsic Satisfaction The feelings that one gets

from engaging in self-rewarding activities such as

the martial arts and the accomplishments associat-

ed with them provide life with an important source

of meaning and enhance the quality of life

5 Jujutsu contributes to Superior Fitness and

Strength and Physical and Mental Health

6 Superior Quality of Movement A major benefit

of training using Internal Principles in Wa Shin Ryu

Jujutsu is enhanced Quality of Movement Quality

of movement is reflected in the ability to move flu-

idly with good timing coordination and control

and in the ability to apply centered action when ex-

ecuting technique

7 Superior Power with Less Effort Training in

Jujutsu with its emphasis on Japanese Internal Prin-

ciples1 enables students to move more fluidly and

efficiently and helps students generate superior

power with less effort or strength while execut-

ing technique (called Seiryoku Zenyo in Japanese)

Engaging in Jujutsu using Internal Principle is also

a safer way to play as injuries can be kept to a mini-

mum Since technique based on Internal Principles

requires less muscle and strength it is possible to

continue working out into old age even against

younger opponents

8 The acquisition of a Teaching License in Jujutsu

may be used to start your own dojo andor teach

private classes in Jujutsu and Self Defense A 4th

degree black belt is strongly recommended for start-

ing your own dojo (martial arts school)

9 Japanese Jujutsu teaches students the tactics

and skills of both Offense and Self Defense Of-

fensive kills are limited to combat-type situations and

clandestine operations while self defense skills are

extremely useful for everyone be it male or female

young or old

10 Opportunities for Supplemental Income OR

Self Employment as a Professional Martial Arts

Instructor With a black belt and a teach-

ing license those who are so inclined and interest-

ed may engage in a variety of income-producing ac-

tivities that include

a Consulting Opportunities with private compa-

nies the military and law enforcement agencies

may be available (this requires at least a 6th Dan

and extensive marketing activity)

b Supplemental Income A black belt in Jujutsu

(as in all martial arts) enables you to teach part time

in private dojos and in universities and colleges

everywhere You wont get rich but the supplemental

income is always a nice addition to the salary of your

day job

11 Japanese Jujutsu (especially in its Wa Shin Ryu

form) is a thinking persons art because combat

and self defense situations require that you think

and respond fast on your feet Combat situations

are in reality problem-solving environments re-

quiring the ability to see the action process it and

respond accordingly with the most appropriate tac-

tics and techniques To develop the ability to see

the action and respond quickly and effectively re-

quires extensive training in which students are

taught to either see or create targets of opportuni-

ty and apply the most effective techniques quickly

and without hesitation Japanese Jujutsu provides

such training opportunities using both contra lateral

and bi-lateral forms of training (among other forms of

training) under realistic high pressure conditions

and lots of sparring in Tachi Waza (standing) and

Newaza (on the ground) We also train students to

see targets of opportunity (openings) as they are

presented to them by their partnerattacker and we

also train students to create such openings using

various forms of deception (Damashi) The bottom

line is that such training stimulates the brain contrib-

utes to neurogenesis (growth of neural pathways in

the brain) and helps students think and act quickly

and effectively

12 Having rank in Japanese Jujutsu (especially a

black belt) is a Prestigious Accomplishment in

the eyes of society (and in the eyes of ones col-

leagues) that can open many doors for you espe-

cially when applying for jobs in occupations that car-

ry some risk These include such areas as the mili-

tary the police intelligence agencies foreign ser-

vice jobs abroad officer candidate school private

security work and of course teaching in challeng-

ing schools in high risk areas of town While there

are no guarantees having rank in Japanese Jujutsu

(especially a black belt) will often put you ahead of

most other job applicants and will enhance your

chances of getting the job you want Make sure

you include a copy of your rank certificate when ap-

plying for a job because the certificate lists the most

important values and attitudes we teach these in-

clude honor discipline responsibility hard work re-

liability perseverance and more that These are

among the most important attributes that employ-

erslook for in their employees In addition your jujut-

su certificate may well become the first topic of con-

versation during your job interview and will help

break the ice

13 Personal Attributes Japanese Jujutsu teaches

and helps develop a sense of empowerment a

strong work ethic self discipline concentration and

sustained focus a sense of personal honor respect

reliability responsibility and a no-quit attitude It is

also an excellent way to achieve a higher level of

mind-body harmonization and internal peace

14 Jujutsu can be an Avocation and a Serious

HobbyPreoccupation in Retirement A lot of peo-

ple in retirement often become couch potatoes or

lose meaning and focus in their life This could lead

to bouts of depression and a loss of purpose in life

A serious and engaging activity such as Ju-

jutsu (also true for many martial arts) will keep you

involved motivated and connected with your envi-

ronment and your more serious students this can be

a considerable source of satisfaction and meaning

and may well provide your life with focus and a

greater purpose through teaching and helping

young minds (and not-so-young ones) grow and de-

velop and become better people

1Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu is grounded in Japanese-based Internal Principles

The complete list of principles may be found in the authors book

JUJUTSU Traditions Ways amp Modern Practices (2019) The book is avail-

able on Amazon

is $15-20[] By that time yoursquoll also have a

copy of the Black Belt Handbook which Irsquoll send

to you usually when yoursquore 2nd

or 1st brown

Q If I buy all of your in-print books at one

time do I have to pay separate postage for

each one That gets kinda expensive

052720

A No If yoursquore in the US and you order up to 4-

5 books at one time the postage is the same as

if you ordered 1 book Or you can order all 8-

dvds from my home-study course plus one book

and the postage is still the same as one book

4-5 amp or dvd sets 1 I can get into one Priority

BENEFITS OF JUJUTSU by Andrew Yiannakis PhD

Japanese Jujutsu as

is the case with

many serious martial

arts provides partici-

pants with many ben-

efits and rewards

Some of the major

benefits are listed

below

1 The acquisition and

development of Supe-

rior Self Defense Skills (the skills derive in modi-

fied form from the battlefield techniques and tactics

developed by the samurai on the battlefields of feu-

dal Japan) Self defense doesnt get any more awe-

some than this

2 Empowerment (physical and psychological) On

one level this speaks to the physical benefits of pos-

sessing superior powers and awesome combat and

self defense skills On a psychological level em-

powerment speaks to self confidence decisiveness

self control increased determination and a no-quit

attitude

3 Personal Growth and Development including

brain stimulation and neural pathway support

(neurogenesis) improved cognitive functions and

longevity For example there is considerable evi-

dence that activities that stimulate the brain and

contribute to enhanced brain activity appear to slow

down the aging process and keep one sharp into old

age The complex demands of Jujutsu on the brain

and the various forms of bi-lateral and contra-lateral

training we engage in are clearly major factors in

efficient brain activity and mental health

4 Intrinsic Satisfaction The feelings that one gets

from engaging in self-rewarding activities such as

the martial arts and the accomplishments associat-

ed with them provide life with an important source

of meaning and enhance the quality of life

5 Jujutsu contributes to Superior Fitness and

Strength and Physical and Mental Health

6 Superior Quality of Movement A major benefit

of training using Internal Principles in Wa Shin Ryu

Jujutsu is enhanced Quality of Movement Quality

of movement is reflected in the ability to move flu-

idly with good timing coordination and control

and in the ability to apply centered action when ex-

ecuting technique

7 Superior Power with Less Effort Training in

Jujutsu with its emphasis on Japanese Internal Prin-

ciples1 enables students to move more fluidly and

efficiently and helps students generate superior

power with less effort or strength while execut-

ing technique (called Seiryoku Zenyo in Japanese)

Engaging in Jujutsu using Internal Principle is also

a safer way to play as injuries can be kept to a mini-

mum Since technique based on Internal Principles

requires less muscle and strength it is possible to

continue working out into old age even against

younger opponents

8 The acquisition of a Teaching License in Jujutsu

may be used to start your own dojo andor teach

private classes in Jujutsu and Self Defense A 4th

degree black belt is strongly recommended for start-

ing your own dojo (martial arts school)

9 Japanese Jujutsu teaches students the tactics

and skills of both Offense and Self Defense Of-

fensive kills are limited to combat-type situations and

clandestine operations while self defense skills are

extremely useful for everyone be it male or female

young or old

10 Opportunities for Supplemental Income OR

Self Employment as a Professional Martial Arts

Instructor With a black belt and a teach-

ing license those who are so inclined and interest-

ed may engage in a variety of income-producing ac-

tivities that include

a Consulting Opportunities with private compa-

nies the military and law enforcement agencies

may be available (this requires at least a 6th Dan

and extensive marketing activity)

b Supplemental Income A black belt in Jujutsu

(as in all martial arts) enables you to teach part time

in private dojos and in universities and colleges

everywhere You wont get rich but the supplemental

income is always a nice addition to the salary of your

day job

11 Japanese Jujutsu (especially in its Wa Shin Ryu

form) is a thinking persons art because combat

and self defense situations require that you think

and respond fast on your feet Combat situations

are in reality problem-solving environments re-

quiring the ability to see the action process it and

respond accordingly with the most appropriate tac-

tics and techniques To develop the ability to see

the action and respond quickly and effectively re-

quires extensive training in which students are

taught to either see or create targets of opportuni-

ty and apply the most effective techniques quickly

and without hesitation Japanese Jujutsu provides

such training opportunities using both contra lateral

and bi-lateral forms of training (among other forms of

training) under realistic high pressure conditions

and lots of sparring in Tachi Waza (standing) and

Newaza (on the ground) We also train students to

see targets of opportunity (openings) as they are

presented to them by their partnerattacker and we

also train students to create such openings using

various forms of deception (Damashi) The bottom

line is that such training stimulates the brain contrib-

utes to neurogenesis (growth of neural pathways in

the brain) and helps students think and act quickly

and effectively

12 Having rank in Japanese Jujutsu (especially a

black belt) is a Prestigious Accomplishment in

the eyes of society (and in the eyes of ones col-

leagues) that can open many doors for you espe-

cially when applying for jobs in occupations that car-

ry some risk These include such areas as the mili-

tary the police intelligence agencies foreign ser-

vice jobs abroad officer candidate school private

security work and of course teaching in challeng-

ing schools in high risk areas of town While there

are no guarantees having rank in Japanese Jujutsu

(especially a black belt) will often put you ahead of

most other job applicants and will enhance your

chances of getting the job you want Make sure

you include a copy of your rank certificate when ap-

plying for a job because the certificate lists the most

important values and attitudes we teach these in-

clude honor discipline responsibility hard work re-

liability perseverance and more that These are

among the most important attributes that employ-

erslook for in their employees In addition your jujut-

su certificate may well become the first topic of con-

versation during your job interview and will help

break the ice

13 Personal Attributes Japanese Jujutsu teaches

and helps develop a sense of empowerment a

strong work ethic self discipline concentration and

sustained focus a sense of personal honor respect

reliability responsibility and a no-quit attitude It is

also an excellent way to achieve a higher level of

mind-body harmonization and internal peace

14 Jujutsu can be an Avocation and a Serious

HobbyPreoccupation in Retirement A lot of peo-

ple in retirement often become couch potatoes or

lose meaning and focus in their life This could lead

to bouts of depression and a loss of purpose in life

A serious and engaging activity such as Ju-

jutsu (also true for many martial arts) will keep you

involved motivated and connected with your envi-

ronment and your more serious students this can be

a considerable source of satisfaction and meaning

and may well provide your life with focus and a

greater purpose through teaching and helping

young minds (and not-so-young ones) grow and de-

velop and become better people

052820

Wooden knives donrsquot bend but you need to

one of my mats at a demo decades ago [I take any

kind of knife very seriously I had a knife pulled on

me by an adult gang member while I was teaching at

a jr high school decades ago It wasnrsquot a smart move

on his part but I considered myself lucky]

Irsquod occasionally be a ldquosubstituterdquo counselor at the

junior high [middle] school I taught at A wise older

counselor [whom the kids referred to as ldquomomrdquo]

told me that if you ask the student ldquowhat are the

reasonsrdquo for what you did yoursquore much more likely

to get an honest response and something you can

work with Sometimes the kidrsquos action was not really

his fault but someone elsersquos Sometimes even the

teacher was at fault As the ldquowiserdquo counselor told

me if you want to find the truth ask ldquowhatrdquo If you

just want to punish ask ldquowhyrdquo

tion to that 8x8rsquo space I did learn that many tech-

nique executions took much less space if done cor-

rectly and if you controlled your uke

Hightail ldquodropboxrdquo at httpsspaceshightailcom

tions Also you do NOT have to register or sign up

with Hightail to send me these large files Itrsquos part of

your BJJY membership benefits

because it makes people feel defensivemdashlike they

have to prove something

Q In the ldquoMessage Boardrdquo of Budoshin-Online

you have the following blurb

the donated funds for 060720

Page 9: UPCOMING EVENTS · rank certificates, and a generalized resume for review. 051020 A: Try not to worry about minor variances in tech-nique execution. We normally teach several varia-tions

lot of students make initially

If youre the sensei of any martial art or ac-

tive in any organized sport you may be aware that

more amp more insurance companies are requiring

that you have some sort of Concussion Aware-

best sources for such a program is the Heads Up

program [including free certification] made available

by the CDC [Center for Disease Control] For more

to the ldquoHeads Uprdquo trainingcertification go to http

bution to other instructors in your dojo students

and parents too

The American Ju-Jitsu Association has also

developed the Responsible Instructor Program

[RIP] to deal with concussion awareness and other

safety concerns in a dojo situation If youre inter-
