Improvisation is also celebrated as a means of allowing students the opportunity toexplore the possibilities of this exciting and challenging art form. Ms. Djokic burst onto the international music scene when millions of television viewers watchedher performance of Bach at the 2002 Grammy Awards following the lauded release of her self­titleddebut recording on SONY Classical. Since then, She has accrued numerous distinctions and accolades:she has been named one of the top “25 Canadians Who Are Changing Our World” by Maclean’sMagazine, one of “Canada’s Most Powerful Women” by Elle Magazine, and had her life and careerchronicled by a special BRAVO! TV documentary entitled “Seven Days, Seven Nights.” A natural leaderand advocate for classical music, Denise is equally at home on the podium as a keynote speaker, havingpresented at forums such as IdeaCity in Toronto and the Women In Leadership Conference at Queen’sUniversity. Denise believes strongly in passing along her knowledge of music and her instrument. Sheserves on the Faculty of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada each summer, has been a VisitingProfessor at the University of Ottawa, and frequently gives masterclasses.

Palladian EchoesTuesday, 5/3/16 | 7pm | Old Cabell Hall Lobby | FreeThis sound installation brings recordings of Palladio's Venetian masterpiece,San Giorgio Maggiore into and around Old Cabell Hall, creating a multichannelsound walk for listeners in the context of the UVA Lawn. Jefferson'sarchitectural works were inspired by Palladian design, and this piece sets up aPalladian Echo in proximity to Jefferson's Rotunda. Sound Cast of San GiorgioMaggiore is a collaboration between Dr. Matthew Burtner of Music and Dr.Anselmo Canfora of Architecture, created thanks to the generous support fromthe Vice Provost for the Arts Faculty Arts Research Award.

Christopher LunaSaxophonist Roscoe Mitchell commissioned graduate student, Christopher Luna to transcribe andorchestrate a free improvisation of his with Craig Taborn on the electronics and Kikanju Baku on drums.The piece forms part of the cycle Coversations for Orchestra, and will be performed by the IcelandSymphony Orchestra conducted by Ilan Volkov on April 15th in Reykjavik as part of the TectonicsFestival.

Dr. Erik DeLucaCongratulations to Erik DeLuca on successfully defending his Dissertation,"Wolf Listening: Acoustemological Politics and Poetics of Isle Royale NationalPark". His essay, culminating from a wide ranging portfolio of musicalcomposition and sonic ethnography, explores environmental aesthetics in theAnthropocene. Erik's dissertation committee, including Jim Igoe fromAnthropology, Michelle Kisliuk, Ted Coffey and Matthew Burtner wereimpressed by the interdisciplinary fluency of his scholarship and the strength ofhis original music. Following Erik's multimedia presentation, he fielded

provocative questions from the committee and other attendees. He will make minor revisions per thecommittee's request and will submit the final document to the GSAS dissertation cloud. With warmestcongratulations to rising Dr. DeLuca!

Bonnie GordonUVA McIntire Department of Music Faculty Member, Bonnie Gordon isparticipating in the Hearing Landscapes Critically network at Oxford University.She will discuss the soundscapes of Monticello.

Joel RubinDirector of performance in ethnomusicology, Joel Rubin recently featured in a5­star review in Songlines, the influential world music magazine, about a newalbum which translates to the title, "Poland: a Metamorphosis". Klezmer EnsembleCelebrating its 10th anniversary under the direction of associate professor JoelRubin, the UVA Klezmer Ensemble offered up its own take on the long Jewishtradition of klezmer music during a concert on Thursday. Caroline Newmanwrites an article in UVAToday about this innovative concert entitled "UVA'sKlezmer Ensemble Pairs Modern Rock with Jewish Tradition".

University SingersThe 95 members of the University Singers have represented UVA around theworld, performing some of the most challenging choral pieces in the musicalcanon. On Saturday, they will again take the stage at UVA. Read more inCaroline Newman's UVAToday article demonstrating how the U­Singerscontinue to wow audiences from Prague to Old Cabell.

Dr. Gretchen CarlsonCongratulations to Gretchen Carlson on successfully defending herdissertation, "Jazz Goes to the Movies: Contemporary Jazz Musicians' Work atthe Intersections of the Jazz and Film Art Worlds." Her research brings asociological perspective to jazz in film, examining the behind­the­scenesdynamics of jazz artists' work in the film industry, and their negotiations of theirown experiences and creative practices within these industry structures. Herinterdisciplinary research combined perspectives and approaches from thevaried fields of sociology, jazz studies, ethnomusicology, and film studies. Her

committee included Scott DeVeaux, Karl Miller, and Nomi Dave from the Music Department, as well asHector Amaya from the Media Studies Department. The defense was well­attended by members of theMusic Department. Congrats to Dr. Carlson!

Indian Classical Night 2016Saturday, 4/23/16 | 7pm | McLeod Hall Auditorium | FreeExperience the incredible beauty of the Indian classical arts performed by atalented group of musicians, dancers, and vocalists from the University of

Virginia student body, faculty, and Charlottesville community. Along with exciting new collaborations, thisyear's show will feature a catered reception and exhibition of paintings by Murad Khan Mumtaz at 6pm.Local visual artist Chicho Lorenzo will also surprise us with a live art piece inspired by the show. Designing New Musical Instruments

Fall 2016 ­ MUSI 4559: Sound Synthesis and ControlSpring 2017 ­ MUSI 4535: Instrument Design and Performance

New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) is a growing field that explores technologiesfor performing music. NIME is interdisciplinary, incorporating perspectives from music,sculpture, engineering, human­computer interaction (HCI), and design. Starting in the Fall,we will offer a two­course sequence on designing, building, and performing with newmusical interfaces.

Fall 2016: MUSI4559 Sound Synthesis and Control

This class will cover the basic skills needed for building new musical interfaces. We will learnreal­time digital sound synthesis and use sensors to measure users’ movements as controldata. The class is primarily project based, and we will prototype a number of new musicalinstruments to explore different types of synthesis and interaction. We will usemicrocontrollers and single­board computers to embed electronics within various physicalform­factors. Some experience with music and technology is expected.

Spring 2017: MUSI4535 Instrument Design and Performance

This course explores the physical design and performance practices of new musicalinstruments. We will learn to create interfaces for controlling software on the computer (PD,Max/MSP, Ableton) as well as stand­alone instruments and processing systems. We willcover basic woodworking, digital fabrication, and interface design in order to constructphysical enclosures and sculptural objects. In addition to creating instruments, an emphasiswill be placed on learning and performing our new systems. This course is project basedand experience with sound and technology is expected.
