VOL 21 ISSUE 16, 4 SEPTEMBER 2019 You Are a Superhero Last week was Book Week with the theme of ‘Reading is our Secret Power’. On Friday, I was so amused by all the superheroes that paraded during assembly and thought to myself ‘what is our fascination with superheroes?’ They are a cultural phenomenon. They are the subjects of comic books and blockbuster movies. It is not uncommon to see someone dress up as their favourite superhero as we did on Friday during Book Week. I then proceeded to think ‘What is it that makes these superheroes so fascinating?’ Their superpower is the obvious answer. Each superhero has a unique ability that sets them apart from the rest of us. Their superpower is something that makes them special. Another reason we are fascinated with these superheroes is that they are equally human. They have their struggles and they have their flaws. We can identify with them and we are encouraged by their ability to overcome the obstacles in front of them. As I talk about superheroes, I am reminded how Jesus is the ultimate superhero. He has amazing superpowers. His powers are to heal the sick, help the poor and save us from sin. The best thing about his powers include that they are real and not make-believe. Beyond his superpowers, Jesus is amazingly human. He is God made flesh. He became one of us. He emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of man. (Philippians 2:7). We can relate to Jesus. Even though he is all-powerful and clothed in majesty, he disguised himself in human flesh that we might know God and live in relationship with him. You Are a SuperheroLast week was Book Week with the theme of ‘Reading is our Secret Power’. On Friday, I was so amused by all the superheroes that paraded during assembly and thought to myself ‘what is our fascination with superheroes?’

They are a cultural phenomenon.

As I talk about superheroes, I am reminded how Jesus is the ultimate superhero. He has amazing superpowers. His powers are to heal the sick, help the poor and save us from sin. The best thing about his powers include that they are real and not make-believe.

INSPIRE photos featured this week:• Book Week

From the PrincipalSPRING IS HEREIt was a pleasure this week to begin Monday in the sunshine greeting families as they arrive for the first school day in Spring. Whilst there may still be some rain to come, the promise of warmer weather can be incredibly revitalising.

With September comes changes to uniform, including the need for students to wear their hats. You will find that teachers are lenient this week, with lots of reminders for students, however next week students must have a hat in order to play at school and SPLASH, and to participate in PE lessons. Please read other important uniform information in this edition of Inspire.

Another important and exciting part of September is the preparation for our Year 1 to 4 concert. Please be sure to note information through Inspire and from your classroom teachers about requirements for concert, from volunteer requests to schedules and costume needs.

STAFFING NEWSThis week, we share our last week with Tamra Purton working in her role working in EAL Family/Community support. Tamra has left the role in order to be able to give her time to other commitments, and we will still see Tamra around as a parent of St Paul. Please join me in thanking Tamra for her work in supporting families and our school community.

WELCOME TO ST PAULWe warmly welcome Brydie Wombat and her family to the St Paul community. Brydie has joined Mr Sheedy’s Reception classroom. Please assist us in making the Wombat family feel welcome and keep them in your prayers.

From the Deputy PrincipalCOMMUNITY BUILDINGAfter the success of the recent Wine and Cheese night, it is easy to see the sense of community at St Paul growing. But we cannot rest on our laurels and assume this will continue. Already a number of parents have spoken to me about how they would like to get involved to assist this. How can you help? Sometimes it’s as simple as coming to as many events as possible and encouraging others to do the same. Volunteering to sell tickets or set events up is always welcome too.

Over the next few years we would love to see more and more families, from all backgrounds and year levels, attend our community events. Did you know that St Paul Lutheran School turns 50 in 2023? The best way to celebrate this milestone will be to bring an entire community together and recognise the uniqueness of our school and its history. It might seem early to be talking about this but each year between now and 2023 is a building block towards a significant milestone. How can you help? How can you represent you and your friends and family? If you don’t know where to start, reach out and have a chat to a staff member. We not only welcome your input, but need it.

Community has been a focus in Year 6 recently. Students have been looking at the history of St Paul Lutheran School, digging through the archives and every magazine in the school’s history. This is how these students are developing a strong sense of empathy as they look at developing structures/groups to compliment the greater school community. This has focussed particularly on updating the Sports Day teams and utilising the Friday afternoon elective times. We will keep the community updated on the work of these students.

A big, big thank you to the St Paul community for making Book Week 2019 a great success! The students had a fantastic week engaging with Australian authors and celebrating literacy. It was lovely to see so many parents and students enjoying the Book Week Assembly on Friday. I wanted to give a special thank you to all the parents and carers who assisted their children with dress up costumes for the Book Week parade, everyone looked amazing!

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE 2019

This is the last week of the PRC 2019, with all entries due this Friday 6 September. If students are just finishing off, don’t forget that you can use your readers to fill in the bottom four books that don’t have to be designated Premier’s Reading Challenge. We have also been reading PRC books during Library time. These books combined with some reading at home should ensure that all students have a great chance of completing the challenge. If you have any questions please let me know.

PASTY BAKE 2019 A very BIG thank you to everyone in our school community who supported this pasty bake fundraiser. There are many volunteers who give their valuable time to make it happen, but we are also very thankful to those who support by purchasing; even though the price went up this year. Finally, we will have raised an amazing $4500, which goes towards supporting our School Ministry Worker role at St Paul. We give thanks to God for His abundant blessings. We look forward to what 2020 brings! Yours in Christ, Renate Burls.

ANNUAL FUNDRAISING QUIZ NIGHT – SAVE THE DATECome and join us to support our local school Chaplaincy at St Paul Lutheran in the Church hall on Saturday 26 October 2019 at 7:00pm for 7:30pm. There will be more information about this fun event in mid-September. If you have an item/service you could donate for our raffle or auction prizes, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Louise Venning at school or you can contact Judy Carr directly on 0427261794 or 8344 8868. Thank you.

SAVE YOUR BREAD TAGS!We need your bread bag tags! In conjunction with 107.9 Life, we (school and church) are collecting bread bag tags. These are sold to a South Australian company in Robe called Transmutation. The company recycles the tags into bowls, door knobs and floor tiles. The money from the sale of bread bag tags to this company is used to buy wheelchairs for the disabled in South Africa. Instead of throwing them away, we can recycle them and we can all do our bit for the environment, reduce landfill and help others. Please place your tags in the jar at the Front Office. Thanks for your help.
