On Sunday, October 28th, the assistant bishop, The Rt. Rev. Magness, will be visiting Christ Church. He will be Confirming 5 of our members and Receiving another during the 10:00 a .m . Ho l y Eucha r i s t .
Following the service, we will be having a covered dish luncheon with time to socialize with the Bishop and to welcome the newly confirmed and received. Look for a sign up sheet next week for a desert or side dish to go along with the ham.
The Altar Guild approached the Vestry about funds to replace the 2 chalices and patens that we use at Holy Eucharist. The silver plating has been wearing off over time from cleaning and they are starting to look shabby. The Vestry approved the purchase of the replacements that the Altar Guild had picked out. These are also silver plated but with new cleaning methods these should last us for many years. Both chalices have been donated and should be here in time for the Bishop to consecrate during that service.
At the September 16th Vestry meeting your Vestry (with several member of the congregation in attendance) discussed a request from Rev. Helen McKee to become priest-in-charge of Christ Church. This would involve a contract with a negotiated salary and benefits. She would celebrate Holy Eucharist each week but may have required “flexible” service times (including possible Saturday nights) so she could still cover Gretna. This would also mean

we would not need to utilize our other supply priests Rev. Bob Hamilton and Rev. Dr. Jan Fuller. After a thorough discussion, the Vestry felt that this would not be a good financial or spiritual fit at this time and voted not to hire Rev. Helen McKee as the priest-in-charge.
The vestry understands that without the salary from a Priest-in-Charge position Rev. McKee will need to seek employment at another church. We thank her for her time here and wish her Godspeed in her future endeavors.

The ECW met August 5th and September 9th. At the August meeting, final plans were put together for our Bingo Fundraiser and the Blood Drive. A huge thank you goes out to Janis Chenery, her committee, Pat Irwin and Nancy Sands, and all who helped with setting up, donating prizes, our cooks and dessert makers, and all
who kept things running smoothly. And let's not forget our number callers, Bob Chenery and Shaun Anderson. It was a huge success with 62 people attending! Everyone had fun and many asked, “When are you going to have another Bingo Night? We want to come!” The ECW made over $600 in profit due to the generosity of the many members who donated time, prizes and supplies needed to make it a success.
On Sunday, September 9th, the Bloodmobile pulled into the church parking lot and for a few hours the ladies inside were busy collecting blood from 7 of our members. Thank you to Kathy Haney for helping make it possible for our church to give back to the community.
At the September meeting, we discussed our Spaghetti Supper Fundraiser, which is Saturday, October 13th, from 5-7 p.m., and the upcoming visit of The Rt. Rev. James Magness, Bishop Assistant, on Sunday, October 28th. The Bishop will be here for confirmation
with a luncheon following the service. There are tickets for the Spaghetti Supper on the credenza for pre-sale, and a list of food to bring for the luncheon.
The United Thank Offering boxes will be gathered on Sunday, October 21st, during the offertory.
The ECW Christmas Party will be at Golden Corral, December 7th, at 6:00 p.m.
The next ECW meeting will be October 21st.

ECW Prayer Almighty God, we pray that you will bless our work
in our mission and ministry in the world. Help us to pray fervently, labor diligently, and give
liberally to make known the power of your love given through your son, Jesus. Let us not forget the
lessons from the past nor the challenges of the future. Anoint us with your grace and shine in our
hearts as we reflect your light throughout the world. - Amen
Sunday October 7th
We will celebrate St. Francis of Assisi, who was the patron saint of Italy and later
became associated with patronage to animals and the natural environment. Please bring your pets or a picture of your pets for a special blessing.
We are also collecting donations for the Pittsylvania Pet Center that will be blessed during the service.
Christ Church will be supporting the local organization “God’s Storehouse” again this Thanksgiving. Please have your donations brought in by Sunday, November 18th, so we may deliver them in
time for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The church is also hoping to purchase and donate several turkeys to God’s Storehouse. Any cash donations to help us complete this task would be greatly appreciated. Please speak to John Ross or John Fifield if you can help. This is an important outreach opportunity for our church and a great way for us to support the community. Together we can help more people than we could on our own. We are going to try and concentrate on specific food items every 2 weeks to donate, but any donations are appreciated.
Oct. 14th & 21st - Starches, such as Pasta, Rice, & Potatoes. Oct. 28th & Nov. 4th - Proteins: Canned Meat (Tuna, Chicken, Salmon, etc.), Peanut Butter & Powdered Milk.Nov. 11th & 18th - Soups, Canned Fruits, Canned Vegetables, Jellies & Cereal.
Giving SundayNovember 18th
Most of us don’t think of our annual giving as “acts of generosity.” Often we consider them more as a duty or obligation to our
parish. Remember Christ’s teaching, “It is better to give than to receive.” Sunday, November 18th, we will have our annual Giving Sunday and will be collecting the 2019 pledge cards during the service. Every moment, every dollar, and every ounce of energy we offer in service to another nourishes a body, mind and soul.
Following the service we will be holding a Thanksgiving Luncheon with our church family. The church will be providing the meat for our feast. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Look for a sign up sheet a few weeks before. We are so blessed to call on each other as family and let us give thanks for our many blessings together.
On Sunday, September 9th, Natalie and Abigail received their first communion. They have been taking communion
classes with Sydney that began in the Spring and their desire to participate at the altar had g r o w n . S u c h a sweet blessing to watch our youth grow and change and l ea rn more abou t becoming members of our church. Sydney will be participating in her first communion when she is ready.

Back to School Sunday was celebrated on Sunday, August 19th, with many children in attendance. The children with their back bags and teachers with their bags were blessed by Mother Helen and given gifts to remember this blessing
throughout the year and other gifts that can be put to good use throughout the school year.
As a small church we were blessed to have gifts for 20 ch i ldren and 12 teachers associated with our church. Please continue to pray for the children in our community during the school year.
Sunday School resumed on Sunday, September 9th with a great game of Jeopardy. This is a fun way to review what we have learned in the past and get us ready for the new year. We will be
exploring the New Testament throughout the new school year. We will also be working on reading through Chapters of the Bible to explore some independent Bible study. I am looking forward to another fun year working with our youth and helping them learn a little more about God’s Word and exploring their relationship with Christ. Please continue to encourage your children or grandchildren to join us and pray for our youth members in their growing faith.-Kristi Ross
