SOCAL SHOWDOWN: The Dodgers conclude their nine-game
homestand (4-4) with the second game of the Freeway Series tonight
against the Angels following last night’s 7-6 loss. Los Angeles opened
the homestand by splitting a four-game series with the Mets before
taking two of three from the Cardinals during the weekend. The Freeway
Series shifts to Anaheim tomorrow, as the Dodgers open a five-game
road trip with games against the Angels (two games) and Padres (three
games).
Following last night’s loss, the Dodgers fell to 3-3 in
Interleague Play this year, splitting a two-game set at Tampa
Bay and taking two of three from the Blue Jays in Toronto.
Last year, the Dodgers went 10-10 against the American
League, including an 8-2 mark at home.
Last night’s loss may have snapped the Dodgers’ four-game
home winning streak over the Angels, but the Dodgers have
still won eight of their last 10 overall against their Freeway
Series rivals.
Los Angeles has gone 9-12 at home and is averaging 3.29 runs
per game at Dodger Stadium this year – the sixth-lowest home
mark in the Majors. On the road, Los Angeles is averaging 5.44
runs per game, which is the third-best in baseball. The Dodgers
are currently on pace to average the fifth-fewest runs of any
single season at Dodger Stadium, ahead of only the 1968 (2.62
R/G), 1967 (2.98 R/G), 1989 (3.12 R/G) and 1964 (3.20 R/G)
clubs.
The first 40,000 fans in attendance tonight will receive a
welcome mat presented by Farmer John.
K IS FOR KERSHAW: Clayton Kershaw looks to continue his
dominant May, with three wins in three starts, a 0.72 ERA (2 ER/25.0
IP) and 37 strikeouts against just one walk this month. Kershaw has
already established a club record with five consecutive starts with 10 or
more strikeouts, striking out 57 and walking two over 40.0 innings in
that span, and his five consecutive starts with 10+ strikeouts and one or
fewer walks are the most in the Majors since at least 1913. With a 19.25
strikeout-to-walk ratio (77 SO, 4 BB), Kershaw is on pace for the highest
mark in the modern era, far outpacing Phil Hughes’ 11.63 mark with
Minnesota in 2014. The MLB record for consecutive double-digit
strikeout games is eight, shared by Chris Sale (May 23-June 30, 2015)
and Pedro Martinez (Aug. 19-Sept. 27, 1999).
Kershaw’s last four starts have all come after Dodger losses (3-
1, 1.97 ERA, 7 ER/32.0 IP) and during the course of his career,
he has made 122 starts following a Los Angeles defeat, going
56-25 (.691) with a 2.29 ERA (210 ER/826.1 IP) and a .199
opponents’ batting average (584-for-2942). The Dodgers have
gone 79-43 (.648) in those games.
Kershaw leads the Majors with 77 strikeouts, a 0.73 WHIP,
62.0 innings and ranks among the big league leaders in wins
(5, T-7th), ERA (1.74, 4th) and opponents’ batting average
(.186, 6th).
Kershaw’s blanking of the Mets last Thursday was his 14th
career shutout, the most among active players. He also leads
active players (min. 1500 IP) in ERA (2.40) and opponents’
batting average (.206), WHIP (1.02).
REHAB UPDATE: Alex Guerrero went 2-for-5 with a double and an
RBI last night in his sixth rehab game (left knee) with Single-A Rancho
Cucamonga. He has gone 7-for-26 (.269) with a double, a homer and
four RBI with Rancho Cucamonga and is expected to continue his rehab
tonight with Double-A Tulsa at Springfield.
Hyun-Jin Ryu, who tossed 2.0 scoreless innings for Rancho
on Sunday, is expected to make his second rehab start for the
Quakes on Friday.
A LOOK BACK: On this date in 2008, Chan Ho Park (Korea), Hong-
Chih Kuo (Taiwan) and Takashi Saito (Japan) became the first trio of
pitchers from Asian countries to pitch all 9.0 innings of a big league
game. The Dodgers won the game, 6-3, over the Angels.
LINED UP: The Dodgers have used 32 different lineups through their
first 39 games this year, only the 10th most among MLB teams and not
far above the league average of 28.2 lineups per team.
ELECTION YEAR: All-Star balloting is underway online at
Dodgers.com/vote, where fans can cast their votes for starters a total of
35 times with the 2016 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot, including
a maximum of five valid ballots cast in any 24-hour period. Get clicking,
because voting ends Thursday, June 30 at 8:59 p.m. PT. The 2016 All-
Star Game will be Tuesday, July 12 in San Diego.
Corey Seager continued to make his case for an All-Star
selection with his third consecutive multi-hit game last night,
going 2-for-5. Seager has hit safely in his last seven games
since May 10, going 13-for-30 (.433) with two doubles, four
homers and six RBI in that span, and has raised his overall
batting average by 51 points (.242 to .293) in 14 games since
the start of May. Seager leads the National League with 43 hits
as a shortstop and ranks among the Senior Circuit’s best at the
position in batting average (3rd), doubles (10, T-2nd), home runs
(6, 2nd) and RBI (20, 3rd).
GOING DEEP: With two home runs from Trayce Thompson last
night, the Dodgers have now homered in 10 consecutive games dating
to May 7, their longest run since an 11-game homer streak Sept. 9-22,
2009. After averaging just 0.7 home runs per game in 29 games (20 HR)
through May 6, Los Angeles has hit 16 homers during its 10-game streak
(1.6 HR/G).
Last night marked the first multi-homer game of Thompson’s
career and the 25-year-old leads the Dodgers with five home
runs, a 1.000 slugging percentage and 12 RBI this month, while
ranking among the May team leaders (min. 25 AB) in batting
average (.346, 2nd, 9-for-26) and on-base percentage (.393, 2nd)
in nine games. Overall, Thompson has done damage against
both right-handed and left-handed pitchers, batting .294 (10-
for-34, 3 HR) against lefties and .289 (11-for-38, 3 HR) against
righties.
MILESTONE WATCH: Adrián González is approaching two career
milestones, entering tonight’s game just six home runs shy of 300 and
10 doubles away from 400. Currently, there are only six active players
that have reached both of those milestones: Alex Rodriguez, Adrian
Beltre, Carlos Beltran, Albert Pujols, David Ortiz and Miguel Cabrera.
González matched a season high with three walks last night and has
reached base in his last 12 games since May 3, batting .311 (14-for-45)
with two doubles, a homer and five RBI during the run.
Two other Dodgers could soon reach a milestone, with Carl
Crawford (996) and Chase Utley (982) approaching 1,000
runs, a mark only 11 active players have reached.
THE MEN IN THE ‘PEN: Louis Coleman retired all three batters he
faced last night in a scoreless eighth inning, marking his 12th consecutive
scoreless appearance (10.1 IP) since April 25. Overall, Coleman is
limiting opposing hitters to a .132 batting average, including a .079 mark
against right-handers (3-for-38).
Kenley Jansen continues to rank second in the Majors with 13
saves in as many opportunities this season (Jeanmar Gomez,
14) and has allowed just one run in 16 appearances (15.2 IP)
this year, good for a 0.59 ERA. Dating to Aug. 26, 2015, he
has been successful in 25 consecutive save opportunities and,
with 155 career saves, Jansen is just six saves shy of Eric
Gagné’s club record.
Adam Liberatore has not allowed a run in 10.0 innings in 13
appearances this year and has limited opposing hitters to a .194
batting average, including a .095 mark by left-handers (2-for-
21).
