"Whispering Stones" in Lent!

Begins March 4th

"If these were silent, the stones would cry

out!" proclaims Jesus to the Pharisees as

they demand his disciples cease their "Hosannas!"

~ Luke 19:37-40

Well, we know that the disciples do fall silent as Holy Week progresses.

But there are others—non-disciples, everyday people—who stand by

Jesus in sometimes small but crucial ways and become the Whispering

Stones of Lent.

Over the weeks of Lent, we’ll get to know some of these “whispering

stones” of the Gospels. From blind Bartimaeus to the women at the Cru-

cifixion, the acts of these courageous followers can inspire us on our pre-

sent day Lenten journeys, as we, too, seek to stand by our Savior every

step of the way. Come join us for soup supper at 6:00 and worship at

7:00 during the Season of Lent. We begin March 4.

2 ADVENT VOICE

PASTOR A MESSAGE FROM OUR

We began the Season of Lent with Ash Wednesday, where our foreheads were marked with a sooty, ashen cross. The focus is always on the cross, as it should be. But think back to our Ash Wednesday liturgy and re-member the way we finish our service - how we finish by gathering around the Lord’s Table. Think back, be-cause at the Lord’s Table something happens. God is there for us. Sins are being forgiven. Hearts are being touched. Lives are being shaped. Truth is being spoken, and the shape of our Lenten journey is being made. There is a gesture in the communion liturgy where the pastor breaks the bread. It has a practical purpose; the bread is broken in order to be shared. That gesture ties our moment to Jesus at table with his followers when he broke the bread and gave it to them. But, most profoundly, the breaking of the bread connects with the breaking of Jesus’ body upon the cross. There is an element of sorrow, shame, regret at the table. Mixed with awe and gratitude is a recognition that we humans are capable of such a brutal deed. There were sins to be atoned for. Real sins. So there are times of sorrow and regret at the altar, times we see our own failures in the broken body. But there is, above all, grace at the altar. And this is always in focus during the season of Lent. Amazing grace. Won-drous grace. We are welcomed and embraced at God’s table. There is also an experience of community at the table, an awareness of the people around us and the recogni-tion, sometimes, that the circle includes people from across time and space. Personal relationships are sus-tained at that table, but there are also moments we see our ties to the whole human family and to the commun-ion of saints. There are times that Communion is tasted with new eyes, and there are times it is the comfort of the familiar. There are moments when we see at the table the arms of God reaching to gather all people into the divine em-brace, and there are moments when we taste the promise of a new creation to come, when we taste eternity up-on our tongues. Nothing is hidden from the eyes of God. But at the table, nothing need be hidden. We are at the hillside with the five thousand. We are in the upper room with the twelve. We are behind locked doors with Thomas. We are at the lakeshore where Jesus has prepared a breakfast after a night of empty labor. At the table we are wrapped in the story of Jesus. At the table we are wrapped in Christ. At the table the risen Christ walks among us to bless and to heal. And it is all conveyed by a promise, an infinite promise made visible in small bits of bread and wine “given for you,” For me. For all. In many ways this table proclaims to each of us the love of God and the promise of a world made whole, espe-cially as we enter into the season of Lent. Glad to be on the journey with you,

Stewardship Corner

How do we to step out in faith, how do we embrace stew-

ardship? This Lent, prayerfully, joyfully, and thankfully

reflect on the many blessings God gives us, and how our

stewardship of any one can affect our stewardship of the

other. For instance, if we are better stewards of our time,

might that help us be better stewards of our relationships,

of our finances, of our commitments? Together we all

live and grow in faith!

Remember to set your clocks forward!

Daylight Savings Time starts

Sunday March 8th.

Women’s Ministry Tea Party

A good time was had by all…

The women of Advent got together for afternoon tea on Saturday February 22 and had a wonderful time! Fifty sev-en ladies gathered around tables festooned with beautiful china, linen napkins and tablecloths and bright primroses.

They listened with rapt attention to a fab-ulous account of the life of Dr. Margaret Brand as told by Susie Boer, a masterful storyteller. In her 45 minute narration, Dr. Brand’s life came alive. She traveled to India where she raised her children and worked along side her husband as they treated leprosy patients. She prayed and trusted God to lead her as she made crucial decisions about her medical practice and her life in general. The story was both fascinating and inspirational.

After hearing about Dr. Brand, delicious refreshments were served. Pots of fragrant afternoon tea from Murchies, marionberry scones, juicy grapes, mixed nuts and choco-lates were served with the highlight being light crunchy rosettes lovingly made by our own Sandy Barrett especially for the occa-sion.

As they enjoyed their tea treats and visited with their tablemates, the ladies were encouraged to share their thoughts about future events by placing sticky dots to indicate their preferences on charts giving day and time options and activity choices. In this way, lots of information to guide the organizers’ planning was obtained.

This event was the second organized by Advent’s Women’s Minis-try group. The first was last spring’s weekend retreat in Indianola. Look for another event in the near future!
