Hello once again to you all,The two little words – – seem insufficient to express my gratitudeto the Lions of District 105E, and their partners. It’s a phrase we say soeasily – sometimes without even thinking. We’re all taught our

as children for even the smallest thing aren’t we? However, youcan all rest assured that I am so grateful for the donations made by all Clubssince the start of the Lionistic year for my chosen Charity – The MS Society.Over the last few weeks I have received cheques for over £2,000 following visits to Isle of Axholme,Scunthorpe and Bourne Clubs with an amazing four figure sum from Conningsby & Tattershall Lionsfollowing their successful Panto. The MS Society will be able to do so much with your extremelygenerous donations. You are amazing people, doing absolutely amazing things. As I write this, I remember that this would have beenMum’s 93rd birthday. She would have enjoyed the daywith the cool temperatures, the spring sunshine andthe bright yellow daffodils in her garden. She was agenerous, strong, loving, caring wife, mum and also agrandmother who coped with her MS without complaint. I don’t know what she would have thought about theincredible donations which are being made in her memory.I hope she would be as humbled as I feel, that you shouldall give so generously to support the DG’s Wife’s appeal. And that is why (even when it’s said sincerely) those twolittle words never ever seem enough to convey my hugegratitude to everyone of you.

Although Lions had been active in the UK since the formation of London Host Club in 1959 it was not until 1976 that it was deemed essential to have an official MD105 General Office. Lion Lynn Packer (105W District Governor in1975/76) Operated the first Lions business in the UK from his home in Swansea and it was in 1976 thathe was appointed as the first paid General Secretary of MD105. Also in 1976 the first permanent LionsClubs office in the British Isles & Ireland was opened over a baker’s shop at 3 Humphrey StreetSwansea. A move to 22, Cradock Street, Swansea in 1982 was followed by taking a temporary officeat 5, Vine Terrace, Harborne, Birmingham before relocating to our current MD Headquarters Buildingat 257, Alcester Road South, Kings Heath, Birmingham.PDG Peter Jay was the General Secretary at the time and the move to Alcester Road came only aftera long and arduous search for suitable premises (a search in which PDG Lion Doug Cross of SolihullLions Club was a key figure). Lion Doug (an architect by profession) was also heavily involved in theredesign and refurbishement of the building to ensure it was suitable for purpose.

The purchase price was £265,000 and at the 1990 MD Convention in Torquay a Resolution was passed which provided for the purchase of the property. Originally it had been suggested that a fairly substantial mortgage would be necessary but this was avoided as an amendemnt to the Convention Resolution to purchase was overwhelmingly passed. This involved a payment of £10 from every MD105 Lion to cover the amount which would have been needed via a mortgage.MDHQ 257 Alcester Road, Kings Heath, Birmingham

Since that time the property has served the Mutliple District well and a source of revenue has beenrealised by the renting out of some spare office space. It’s certainly a great building for Lions to visit(with a friendly welcome given by the staff) and it is surely an asset we should be proud of.

Lion Brigitte GreenMDHQ Office Mgr.

The Headquarters currently has three Meeting Rooms (one with Disabled Access)which are frequently used for MD Committee and other Lions meetings. There are twoPermanent members of Staff (including MDHQ Manager Lion Briggitte Green). Onefurther part time member of staff reports directly to the MD Council Secretary.Manager Lion Brigitte says... ‘We are committed to provide consistent and reliablesupport to our members to enable them to SERVE more effectively. Our serviceincludes assistance with Website, News updates, PR and promotional materials,MD Meetings, Selling Lions Club supplies (on line shop) and Message in a Bottle. We also carry out administrative tasks for Council and CAC meetings, Travelling Lionand Peace Poster Competitions, Conventions (International, MD and District) and we create the MDDirectory and oversee MyLCI’.

Hopefully this brief outline will have been interesting to you and has some understanding of the vitaltasks and contributions to our operations undertaken by HDHQ staff.

When a pupil at the Thythorn Field Primary School, Wigston was diagnosed with a serious heartcondition it meant that they could not take part in all school activities, primarily missing out on theirfavourite sports. The Head Teacher, Mrs.Cary Ralph, was advised by a specialist nursing team that for the safety ofthe child the school needed to purchase a Defibrillator and have trained staff to use it. She askedthe for help. The school already had donations of approx £300, andneeded an additional £800 to complete the fund raising. Through the efforts of the Lions clubmembers the amount was raised and handed over to the school. On Tuesday 8th March the staff at the school became pupils for a couple of hours learningResuscitation procedures from Ben Ryrie, Community Resuscitation Trainer with the LecestershireAmbulance Service.Club President Lion Iain Bell, along with Past President (and School Governor) Kevin Loydall alsowent along to present the Lions’ cheque to the school.

It was a great moment in the history of the (and a great

moment too for one of its founder members)when Lion President Iain Bell presented aMelvin Jones award to Lion Neville Chadwick. The award, which marks a significant birthday, came as a complete surprise to Neville and itwas presented to recognise his 'DedicatedHumanitarian Services'. Neville has, over manyyears, worked extremely hard to provide helpto individuals and groups in the Oadby andWigston area and beyond. His work in the club has inspired others to followhis dedicated example. Helping to raise over£150,000 through organising the Club’s AnnualSponsored Swim is just one of hisachievements... a truly well deserved award.PICTURE: Lion President Iain Bell presents the Melvin JonesFellowship to Charter Member Lion Neville Chadwick

CONGRATULATIONS to (representing Loughborough Lions) whohas been named as .Following the presentation of her District Award Rina went on to be a worthyrepresentative of 105E at the MD finals. Rina made a top class impressionon everyone and judges were agreed that the 2016 Final had been the mostdifficult ever to judge with all contestants being so closely matched. Many 105E Lions will have had the pleasure of meeting Rina at our DistrictConvention where she conducted a lunch time workshop demonstrating partof her programme to bring awareness of Mental Health and its problems tothe both children and young adults.Rina is now working with Loughborough Lions Club to ensure that the £500bursary she was awarded is well spent on progressing planned educationand training sessions.

Young Ambassador Rina Roy

Our congratulations and best wishes of coursego with Rina as she continues her work in thecommunity and strives now for her personalsuccess at university and beyond, BUT... ....

It’s already time to start looking for the amazingyoung people near you. Young people who areworking so hard to support their community orchange it for the better... Young people who arecommitted to making life better for individualsin our country or even Worldwide.
