8Technical Guideline Activity
Pump Application Guidelines: – Committee is developing a series of White Papers to help the
pump community understand how to apply pumps properly and what type of application may be anticipated
– Major pump types have been identified by application– PD pump company input is being encouraged to ensure broad-
based application coverage– Seal manufacturers are working in parallel to develop a
spreadsheet with seal selections for each service– Initial focus of the committee’s efforts is on a typical 400MW
Combined Cycle Power Plan– Water and Wastewater systems are also being addressed
9Technical Guideline Activity
Vibration (Dynamics of Pumping Machinery) Committee: – Committee is developing a guideline that will provide the pump
industry with reasonable and appropriate methods to avoid resonance and vibration related problems in pump applications
– A primary issue of concern is the effect of increased incidence of resonance and vibration associated with variable speed drives
– Cost/benefit issues will be addressed associated with some of the most advanced (and costly) methods of analysis to prevent resonance and vibration
– Participation in this committee includes experts associated with engineering consulting firms who are affiliated with HI as Standards Partners
10Electronic Data Exchange Standard
Electronic Data Exchange: (HI 50.7 – 2010)– HI teamed with: National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST), AEX
(Automating Equipment Information Exchange) & FIATECH (Fully Integrated and Automated Technology) to create an EDE protocol for the pump community
– Focus: Electronic Data Exchange standard for pumps, based on XML (eXtensible Markup Language) format
– EDE standard, and centrifugal pump XML data sheet released in October 2010.
– Updated XML data sheet incorporating Rotary pump data sets anticipated release – 3rd Qtr 2011.

based discussion forum. Plans in 2011 include a “test bed” to ensure EDE will work for your company.
12Other HI Activities: 2010 – 2011
Incorporated Pump System Matter into HI, and streamlined the operations of HI and PSM, including leadership
Educational Affairs Steering Committee, now under PSM, will engaging more technical participants and creating education around HI standards and guidelines
Established new HI Systems Section, working on concepts for a pump systems standard
Created webinar on ASME EA-2-2009 Energy Assessment of Pumping Systems, and will deliver eight times in 2011
Continue to work with and support ISO TC115 and WG7 efforts

Pump Efficiency rule-making announced on January 3, 2011
Met with U.S. DOE in January 2011 to discuss plans for a new pump efficiency rule-making
HI has established a Pump Efficiency Rule-making Team (PERT), to develop a presentation for DOE addressing issues with pumps and pumping systems optimization
Anticipate that a meeting will be held with DOE rule-making staff sometime in the Summer of 2011
Lessons learned from Europump will be helpful to HI as we work with the U.S. Department of Energy
