It is a common occurrence at this time of year for a person to think about doing things a little different during the New Year. It is at this time a person thinks about starting or increasing an exercise schedule, thinks about visiting family members more frequently, or thinks about doing a better job at thanking others for their community contributions. There are many other things a person can think of changing in the New Year but we don’t have the space or time to list them all. The important fact is that this is the time of year each of us thinks about making this New Year better than other years. Kiwanis, Kiwanis Clubs, and Kiwanis members started our new year off back on October 1 st . For many Kiwanis members October 1 st wasn’t much different than the previous September 1 st . There are those Kiwanis Clubs whose membership does the same thing week after week and does not see the need for doing anything any differently. The membership of some Kiwanis Clubs is so charged with energy that change is a weekly event. Finally there are those Kiwanis Clubs with a membership that is a combination of the two previously mentioned. How would you describe the membership of your Kiwanis Club? What all Kiwanis Clubs need to do, no matter how energized they may or may not be, is CONNECT with their local community to insure that the Kiwanis presence is known throughout the entire community and that the community’s needs that can be addressed by the Kiwanis Club are in fact part of the club’s regular agenda. What all Kiwanis Clubs need to do is NOT ASSUME but stay CONNECTED with their community on a weekly basis. Every Kiwanis Club should be utilizing local media to keep their community informed as to what their local Kiwanis Club is doing and to INSPIRE others to help by either joining Kiwanis, contributing to Kiwanis fundraisers, or both. Last but not least, the Kiwanis member should always ADVOCATE for the KIWANIS FAMILY and let their community know of the great value there is in Kiwanis, Kiwanis sponsored programs, and the service the Kiwanis Family provides. Want to increase the energy in your Kiwanis Club membership? Connect with your community, inspire others to join Kiwanis, advocate for the Kiwanis Family, and the energy will begin to increase. New members bring new ideas, new community needs bring about new Kiwanis projects, and the knowledge of Kiwanis spread throughout community homes, stores, and schools brings about increased respect and support for your Kiwanis Club. I just want to give you food for thought as you think about what your New Year Resolution might be for the Year 2013. Linda and I wish everyone a Joyous Holiday Season and a very Happy New Year. New Year Resolution The year 2012 is all but gone and 2013 is almost here.

Kiwanis, Kiwanis Clubs, and Kiwanis members started our new year off back on October 1st. For many Kiwanis members October 1st wasn’t much different than the previous September 1st.

SILENT AUCTION

CONNECT THE PIECESDon’t be a missing piece!

The connections you’ll make during this year’s conference will help you and your club to create new leaders and new ideas for service and fundraising. There will be an opportunity for a one on one with the District Chairs to learn more about District projects. You will be able to buy Kiwanis items and shirts from A+ Images, Inc. Learn about some fundraising opportunities from exhibitors. Take the first two of 6 classes to qualify for the first ever Kiwanis Leadership Program. Check out the other fun and educational sessions that are being offered to help you in your everyday life as well as your Kiwanis life. It is important to have every club participate. Here are several ways that you can accomplish this goal.

• Encourage your members to register and attend the Saturday Conference

• Join us for the Friday Night Dinner and fun activity• Decorate and return your club puzzle piece to represent your club• Contribute to a silent auction basket

We look forward to having you join us for this fun and educational week-end.

We will be holding a silent auction at the 2013 Mid-Year

Conference to help raise funds for the “Path to a Cure Cam-

paign”. Items will be available for pre-view Saturday Morning, February 16, and all day on Sat-urday. Bidding will be closed at the end of the Saturday Noon Luncheon. The winners of the items will be announced at the closing session. (You must be present or have someone to

close-out your bid at the closing session.)

We have asked each Lt. Gover-nor to have their division spon-sor or put together one basket

for the Silent Auction. If you have an item that you would like to donate for the Silent Auction, please feel

free to contact David Dixon at 765-286-0430 (home). We are putting a minimum value on the

COMMuNITY –(Session #4 & #11) Increase Your Club’s Capacity with Com-munity Collaboration Connecting with other organizations and groups in your local community is a great way to build a Kiwanis club’s capacity. Clubs are able to

tackle large-scale projects with community partnerships and these partnerships will result in additional Kiwanis members. In this session you will hear about specific club successes with community partner-ships and develop a plan to connect with groups and organizations in your own community.

FuN AND GAMES - (Session #12 & #18)A Lighthearted Look at Kiwanis Etiquette and ProtocolWhen do I stand? Where do I wear the Ki-wanis pin? What is an appropriate invoca-tion? Do we have to sing? Banners, gavels, gongs, flags….oh my! It doesn’t matter if you are in a traditional or non-traditional Kiwanis club, you will enjoy this light-hearted discussion of the history and use of Kiwanis etiquette. You may change your mind about a few Kiwanis rituals.

LEADERSHIP – Book Talk – Our Iceberg is Melting (Session #1 and #8)Join us for a discussion of the leadership fable, Our Iceberg is Melting, by one of the leading experts on leadership, John Kotter, Harvard Business School. Don’t be fooled by the simple tale of a group of penguins. The fable is full of lessons on leading through difficult circumstances. Although not required, it is beneficial to read the book before the discussion. The book is available through Amazon, both in print ($11.74) and in a Kindle edition ($9.99).

BALANCE –(Session #5 & #16) Creating Margin in Your LifeFamily, work, Kiwanis…how can you fit it all into your life, without feeling over-loaded? If you want to take control of your schedule, you have to know your priorities and you have to leave yourself some mar-gin. “Margin is the space between our load and our limits.” In this ses-sion you will discuss the concept of creating margin and be intro-duced to a few tools to help you get started taking control of your schedule.

2013 Indiana District Kiwanis Mid-Year Conference Educational Programs

INTERNATIONAL CONNECTION – (Session #7 & #13) What’s the Buzz at Kiwanis International? What are some of the new initiatives being developed at Kiwanis International? What’s the status of the proposed dues increase? What is the status of organization- wide service initiatives and community partner-ships? Join us in this workshop as we share news and updates on what’s new, and what’s coming from Kiwanis Interna-tional.

RELATIONAL LEADERSHIP – The fol-lowing two sessions are the initial offerings for the Relational Leadership program.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP KIWANIS STYLE –(Session #2) The theory of servant leadership focuses on leading in a way that adds value and positively changes those who follow. This is of-ten confused with serving the club by being a leader that does everything. What does it look like to practice servant leadership in a Kiwanis club? How does a Kiwanis leader help club members grow?

Page 6: KIWANIS Update-.pdf · gongs, flags….oh my! It doesn’t matter if you are in a traditional or non-traditional Kiwanis club, you will enjoy this light-hearted discussion of the

Indiana District of KiwanisDecember 2012 - Hoosier Kiwanis Updatepage 6

DEVELOPING KIWANIS LEADERS – (Session #9 & #14) Strong clubs require a pipeline of emerging leaders to assume positions of responsibility. One of the most important jobs of a Kiwanis leader is developing these new leaders. How can club leaders be strategic and intentional about giving emerging leaders the opportunity to lead and prepare them for future posi-tions?

SOCIAL MEDIA uSING LINKEDIN AS A PROFES-SIONAL NETWORKING TOOL(Sessions #3 & #15) LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network and the social media tool of choice for millions of professionals. LinkedIn’s focus is on connecting professionals with one another through sharing skills, experience, expertise, and areas of knowledge. If you are building a business, or building a resume, LinkedIn is a helpful resource. In this session you discover some of the ways you can use LinkedIn and learn the basics of setting up an account and creating a profile.

uSING PINTEREST TO SHARE WHAT YOu LIKE(Session #10) Pinterest is an online pinboard where you can “organizeand share things you love.” Trying to

redecorate your house, add to your wardrobe, or figure out what book to read next? You can see suggestions from others who share your interests through Pinterest. Want to share great community service projects with others? Try Pinterest. In this session you will be introduced to the concept of Pinterest and learn ways you could take advantage of this social media tool. You will learn the basics of set-ting up an account and “pinning” ideas to your board.

TuNE-uP – (Session #6 & #17) A Mid-Year Check-Up for Your Kiwanis ClubHow is your club progressing toward its goals for the 2012-13 year? This is a good time to take the pulse of your club, evalu-ate goal progress, and make any necessary adjustments. This is also a great time for 2013-14 presidents to begin planning for their year of leadership. This session will provide you with a variety of club analysis tools that can be used to provide helpful information for a mid-year check-up and for next year’s planning. The session will discuss how to use the tools and what to do with the information you collect.

Closing Session & 2011-2012 Club Awards

I have what I consider “EXCITING” news about the Indiana District Mid-Year Conference that convenes February 15-16, 2013. The past years’ conference responses have lead the planners of this year’s conference in a new direction. At this year’s confer-ence (February 2013) there will be a new format that will allow better contact of District committee chairs with the Kiwanis mem-bers in attendance.

Each Dis-

trict committee will be assigned an exhibit table where

displays and information will be available for communicating with the Kiwanis members attending. There will not be individual breakout education-type sessions for any of our District chairs/committees.

The concept is “One-On-One” information being shared between the district committee representatives and the Kiwanis members. The District committees will be able to ad-dress individual attendee questions and concerns as they relate to their own Kiwanis club. This puts different responsibilities on the District committees in providing their message and material subject matter to the Kiwanis members attending the conference. Each committee will have information to hand out and informa-tion about their committee subject to reference.

It is my hope that attendees will find this a much more ac-tive learning type environment. It also gives our District Education committee a chance to expand and broaden the scope of educational forums being offered. We will have a drawing for those members that attend the exhibits.

Please start now to get your club members registered and excited about coming to join us for Mid-Year Conference. The purpose of the Mid-Year Conference is not to just provide an avenue for fellowship and fun, but to help rejuvenate our members and ourselves to be better prepared to truly make a difference in Kiwanis and in our lives in our communities. I look forward to

seeing all of you and talking with you about your ideas for the Indiana District. -Gover-nor Ted

Our one million dollar pledge to Riley may only be a small part of the total story, but if we can be part of such a great hospital and the possible success in finding a cure or better treatment of type 1 diabetes, then we must be sure we finish our pledge this year. We need to raise no less than $280,000 to fulfill our one million dollar pledge, so please start planning now how your club can increase their contribution to Riley or if your club is selling raffle tickets please sell all tickets received.

Over the past few years we have had many Kiwanis members make personal donations through the “Riley Honors Program”. Please visit the Indiana District website www.indkiw.org and click on Riley

On Thursday, November 15, 2012, Sheila and I along with Governor Ted and Linda, Past Governor Mike and Barbara, District Secretary Susan and a few other Kiwanis members were invited to attend the annual Riley Children’s Foundation luncheon in Indianapolis. I have attended this luncheon several times and always come away feeling very happy and especially glad I am associated with Kiwanis and its support of such a great place as Riley Children’s Hospital. The children they treat the lives they change and the families they touch can never be appreciated enough until you hear the stories presented of the children introduced at this luncheon.

During the luncheon we were introduced to eight young people chosen to serve as ambassadors and advocates for Riley. These are only eight of the thousands of children treated by Riley Hospital each year, but their stories will open your eyes to Riley and how lucky we are to have this great hospital in Indiana.

One of the young people introduced at the luncheon was Cole Barnett from Newburgh, Indiana. At age 6, Cole was transferred from the intensive care unit of a hospital near his home to Riley Children’s Hospital where his parents received training on how to deal with his disease, type 1 diabetes. Cole is now a 14 year old shortstop on the All-Star baseball team and is able to get continued care at a Riley partnership hospital, Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburg. Riley medical researchers are currently conducting a number of studies on type1 diabetes, which is part of our Kiwanis pledge “Path to a Cure”. Please visit RileyKids.org/champions to view a video of all the 2013 Riley Champions.

This luncheon is attended by over 1000 people and is sponsored by several large corporations in Indiana among which are Kroger and the Indianapolis Colts. To hear the stories and this level of support shows me that the Indiana District of Kiwanis must always continue their relationship and support of Riley Children’s Hospital.

EDuCATION TEAM uPDATESRelational Leadership – A Leader Development Program for Volunteer LeadersThe Indiana District Education Team is excited to announce a new leader development program specifically designed for Kiwanis leaders. The purpose of Relational Leadership is to prepare Kiwanis members for positions of leadership at both the club and district level and to provide high-quality training, grounded in current leadership theory, to all interested Indiana District Kiwanis members.

The program consists of six workshops that will be offered on a rotating basis at Indiana District Mid-Year conferences and Indiana District conventions. There is no cost (other than the usual conference/convention registration) to attend and members do not need to have any previous Kiwanis leadership experience to participate. The first two workshops will be offered at the upcoming 2013 Mid-Year Conference.

Servant Leadership Kiwanis Style – The theory of servant leadership focuses on leading in a way that adds value and positively changes those who follow. This is often confused with serving the club by being a leader that does everything. What does it look like to practice servant leadership in a Kiwanis club?

Developing Kiwanis Leaders – Strong clubs require a pipeline of emerging leaders to assume positions of responsibility. One of the most important jobs of a Kiwanis leader is developing these new leaders. How can club leaders be strategic and intentional

Helping Superstorm Sandy Vicitms in Districts on the East Coast

As all of you are aware the East Coast area of New York and New Jersey was recently heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy. As our board met shortly after that event we discussed how we were truly blessed by all the clubs and Kiwanians outside the Indiana District, who were so generous for our Henryville Disaster Fund. We decided to return the favor by sending $1000 each to the Foundations of New York and New Jersey for their disaster relief efforts. If there are any Clubs or Kiwanians in the Indiana District who would also like to contribute, they can do so by sending those donations to:

New York District Kiwanis Foundation c/o DPG David Rothman 84 Madison Ave. Island Park, New York 11558

New Jersey District of Kiwanis Int. 120 Morris Ave. Summit, N. J. 07901

On another note, all the clubs have recently received notification of our 2013 Scholarship Campaign. These Scholarships have been increased to $1200 per Division. Each Club is asked to contribute $5/member to support this scholarship program. Unfortunately if a club decides not to contribute or contribute at a lower amount, we cannot consider a candidate they might nominate. Let’s all nominate deserving students and make sure our Clubs make their requested contribution, so 24 of Indiana’s best can first hand witness Kiwanis at work.

Annual Club Gift: Help Kiwanis Help Children in Need

The Kiwanis International Foundation’s Annual Club Gift campaign has a very simple, but direct, purpose: The more your club gives, the more the Foundation gives back through grants which directly help the children of the world lead happy, healthy and productive lives. But for every grant funded, five times as many grants go unfunded. This year, the President’s Challenge is asking us to set a goal of $6 per member to meet a goal of $900,000. If we raise our giving by just $1 per member, we can ensure that many more grants are funded and that many more children’s lives are impacted in positive ways. Clubs that give $5 per member will still be eligible for benefits, including district matching scholarships.

For clubs that meet the $6 average, several awards have been established. These include a Thank-You Letter, Banner Patch, an Honors Luncheon Recognition at the KI Convention, and Distinguished Points. For clubs averaging $5 per member, a Thank You Letter, Banner Patch, and Distinguished Points will be awarded. Matching scholarships of $500 will be awarded as follows: US$1=1 Scholarship; US$2=2 Scholarships; US$3=6 Scholarships; US$4=8 Scholarships; US$5 and above=10 Scholarships (Maximum).

Visit www.kiwanis.org/foundation/ACG to make your club’s Annual Club Gift using the convenient, secure online form, or download the Club Giving Brochure and remittance form to fax or mail. What an easy way to make a Big difference in the life of a child!

If you have questions or need more information, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for all you do to make this a better world!

“Because of you, we were able to take three outstanding students to the Key Leader retreat the weekend before last (October 26-28). It was so encouraging to see the students put their knowledge of servant leadership into action. We are looking forward to starting a Key Club and attending the District Convention and the Spring (Key Leader) Retreat with even more students!” This is from a thank you note sent to Dave Wohler from Larissa Biela. Larissa and James Maslar are two teachers from Scecina Memorial High School who served as chaperones at our recent Fall Key Leader weekend at Rancho Framasa in Nashville, IN. Larissa and James learned about the Kiwanis Key Leader Program from the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership as they were looking to increase the student participation in community service.

The attendance of the Scecina students was made possible by a grant from our District Foundation. Many other participants were encouraged to attend and some received financial assistance and transportation from their local Kiwanis Clubs. We have already had more than 40 Key Clubs started as a result of students or potential faculty advisors attending Key Leader Events in Indiana. We know these students are the future of the Kiwanis Family and we truly thank those Kiwanis clubs and members who have gone out of their way to recruit students to attend and/or have paid to help send students to Key Leader. Others have contributed financially to support the Key Leader program, provided snacks and other supplies, and served as chaperones. For all those who have helped promote or support the Key Leader program in any fashion, we are truly grateful.

Our dates and locations are already set for 2013 and registration is now open at www.key-leader.org. We will be at Camp Tecumseh for the second year, near Lafayette, IN. April 12-14, and will be using a new camp in the south next fall. We have enjoyed Camp Rancho Framasa for the past 3 years, but we have just outgrown the meeting space at that facility, so we will be using Waycross Camp near Morgantown, IN. October 25-27, 2013.

We currently have scholarship money available from the District Foundation, and from the Peyton Manning Foundation. The Peyton Manning Foundation grant is geared toward inner city youth who are underserved. At this time we would really appreciate your help in finding students to utilize these funds, and to start recruiting students that you can send to either the spring or fall Indiana Key Leader Events.

PYMWYMI

Does your Kiwanis club start or end every meeting by reciting the Kiwanis Defining statement? I mean the statement about changing the world, “one child….at a time”. Do you really mean it? Does this mean Key Club and Circle K Club Leaders? I think it does, and the way we in Indiana District support our developing leaders is through OUTREACH. Outreach is a program funded by Kiwanis to enable our Indiana District Key Club and Circle K leaders to attend their own Key Club and Circle K District conventions. Every Key Club and Circle K in Indiana should be represented at these conventions, at minimum by the club officers. This is where they get training to be better leaders, this is where they attend educational workshops, this is where they make new friends, and this is where they build up enthusiasm for service projects back in their own schools and communities. If funds are lacking, they cannot attend their training sessions, where they also learn to “change the world”.

OK, they are not children, they are young adults, but you get the point. As they develop leadership skills, they will change the world for the better. As Jim Wruck pointed out in an article in the November Hoosier Kiwanian, which you got in the mail, there are only two sources of income for district budgets of Circle K and Key Club – their member dues and our $75 per club contribution to OUTREACH. Every Kiwanis Club in the Indiana District, regardless of size, is expected to contribute to OUTREACH. Many of you already have, but a number of you have not.

I once belonged to an Investment Club named PYMWYMI (Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is). So I’m asking those clubs who have not contributed to OUTREACH yet this year to PYMWYMI if you are one of those clubs that recite the Defining Statement at every meeting.

Please send your $75 check to Indiana District of Kiwanis, 6415 Castleway W., Suite 103, Indianapolis, IN 46250-1939. Record OUTREACH in the memo line.

The Circle K and Key Clubs of Indiana thank you.

CLuBS AND VOLuNTEERS

NEEDEDThe Indiana District of Kiwanis can currently boast of having 23 strong and vibrant Aktion Clubs. There are 700 members in these 23 clubs that are doing a great job of providing community service in the cities and towns where they live. They are proving that, in spite of living with a disability, they can not only help themselves, but help other deserving people in their community. All they want and all they need is the chance to demonstrate what they can do. Twenty-three Kiwanis Clubs have stepped up to help in sponsoring these 23 Aktion Clubs. Everyone involved in Aktion Club appreciates the continuing and helpful support provided by these caring Kiwanians.

Indiana needs more Kiwanis Clubs that are willing to help sponsor an Aktion Club. We have large and not-so-large groups in cities all over the state of Indiana that are ready to join an Aktion Club. Will you bring this message of need up at a future Kiwanis meeting? Perhaps there is a person or two that might want to take a lead role in starting a club. Maybe a Kiwanian has a friend or family member living with a disability that would like to be a part of Aktion Club. Why not do a member survey as we begin another Kiwanis year and see if you have a person or persons that want to help start and maintain an Aktion Club? If anyone in your club wants to help start a club, just let me know. I will help you find a local service agency that would be willing to co-sponsor a new Aktion Club. We have several such agencies and other local service organizations that would love to charter a local club. All they need is a willing Kiwanis Club to get started. You can reach me at [email protected].

Finally, there is very good news for the Aktion Clubs in Indiana. Our district has been asked to attend and help host the next Kiwanis International Aktion Club Training and Leadership Conference (TLC) scheduled for

September 6-8, 2013. This third annual event will be held at Camp Jameson, just north of the Indianapolis International Airport. We are honored to have the conference again in the central part of Indiana and we hope to be able to have many of our members be able to attend and to participate. We will also be seeking volunteers from the central Indiana area Kiwanis, Circle K and Key Clubs to also help make this the best and most effective Aktion Club conference ever held. I f y o u are in the Indianapolis a r e a , o r n e a r b y , p l e a s e begin telling members about this great opportunity. Helping Aktion Club members enjoy this fun, fellowship and leadership training opportunity will be one that will benefit them in many ways. Remember, Aktion Club is not only a service leadership program of Kiwanis International, it is also one of a club’s very best service projects. It benefits these members in ways that

will allow them to become act ive and e f f e c t i ve members of our society.
