Serving the Managerial/Professional Staff at UNL since 1962
Volume 23, Issue 5 June 2009
President’s MessageDear UAAD Members,
It has been an honor to serve as your UAAD president the past year. I still
remember the phone call from Mary LaGrange asking me to run for president like it was yesterday. The first thought that went through my mind when I received that call was “Mary LaGrange knows my name?!” The second thought was “Uh-oh – I hope I didn’t do anything wrong!”
Being a young staff member working in a small research center in Nebraska Hall, I did not get out much and the fact that the director of accounting was calling me was an honor in itself (since she was not calling me with bad news). When I said “yes,” I had no idea what the next two and a half years would bring in my life.
Year-End Wrap-up Issue
This year’s picnic was highlighted with a tour of Memorial Stadium and the Hawks Championship Center. Approximately 40 members of UAAD were
shown the stadium press boxes which present the journalists a terrific view of the field and our campus on game days. The tour took us down on the field and through the Husker museum in West Stadium and through the North Stadium tunnel walk, which features photos of Husker All-Americans. The next stop on the tour was through the new Hawks Championship Center. We were shown the indoor regulation-size field, the sand volleyball court, swimming pool, and batting and golf cages. We finished up with a walkthrough of the new weight room. Although it was windy, the day was still great for our picnic. On behalf of the UAAD Program Committee I would like to say thanks to the members that attended the tour and picnic. (See photos on page 2.)
At that time, I had only a husband and our small center was working on about $3 million in research. Now our center conducts more than $10 million in research, and I also have a toddler and another baby on the way, due in the next few weeks. The vast majority of my work as UAAD president has been done at home in the late hours of the night when the rest of my family is asleep. Having a life and working has been a very tough transition for me and learning when to work and when to cherish those moments with my husband and son is a daily battle that I

In this day of downsizing, doing more with less, taking on extra work, and often not feeling ap-
preciated, how do we develop and/or maintain a Win-Win mentality? Having a Win-Win mentality is criti-
cal to finding mutual benefit in any given situation. The mentality we are raised with is often Win-Lose. I get my way, or Win . . . you don’t get your way, or Lose. According to the law of synergy, there is always a better way to accomplish things. It’s not your way or my way, but our way (a 3rd alter-native). Where do we find these 3rd alternatives? They can be universal and personal, random and jarring, but they are always new, exciting and extraor-dinarily productive. They may take a little extra time on the front end, but are well worth it when the results make a positive difference in what we’re try-ing to accomplish.Strategies to use to accomplish the
3rd alternative could be as simple as asking “Are you willing to go for a solution that is better than any of us have come up with yet?” It helps to disarm defensiveness by not asking someone to give up their idea, but to look at alternatives that are better than either your or my idea. It begins as a “thought” experiment and nothing more. In this experiment you want to be looking at what “better” looks like . . . a list of criteria for a successful outcome. Once you’ve listed your cri-teria, creation of the prototype begins. Developing new framework, turning your thinking upside down and sus-pending judgment during this process are all part of the process. Arriving at a 3rd alternative will be an exciting time where hesitation and conflict are gone. This process may look a little like con-
flict resolution, but make no mistake, conflict resolution usually means ne-gotiating a low level accommodation
that stops the fight without necessarily breaking through amazing new results. How do you come up with your
criteria for success? Again, asking questions like “Is everyone involved in setting the criteria?” “Are we getting as many ideas from as many people as possible?” “What outcomes do we really want?” “What is the real job to be done?” “What outcomes would be wins for everyone?” and “Are we look-ing past our entrenched demands to something better?”The following are tips to help you
think Win-Win.
• Beware of pride. Let go of needing always to be “right.”
• Learn to say “I’m sorry.”• Be quick to forgive perceived
slights.• Make and keep very small
promises to yourself and others.• Make quiet time for yourself to
think though creative solutions.• You have two ears and one
mouth: use them proportionally.• Practice being generous with
others.• Avoid comparing yourself to
others.• Be grateful . . . and express it!• Learn to become relentless about
discovering how to create great wins for others.
• When things aren’t going well, take a break, and come back at it with freshness.
• Never stop believing in the possibility of the 3rd Alternative.
Make a difference, one person at a time.

Who will you nominate for the Donaldson and Oldt
awards? Current forms and infor-mation are now available on the UAAD website.
The Founder’s Day Celebration is February 20, where your colleagues will be recognized. Nominations will be due in early February.
Carl A. Donaldson Award for Excellence in Management – This award, given annually since 1972, is in honor of Carl A. Donaldson. A graduate of the University of Ne-braska, Mr. Donaldson devoted his entire 43-year professional career to University service. In 1961, he founded the University Association for Administrative Development.
The Carl A. Donaldson Award was created to recognize UNL’s excel-lent managers in non-faculty posi-tions.
Floyd S. Oldt Award for Excep-tional Service to the University – This award was created in 1992 from a bequest by University of Ne-braska alumnus Floyd S. Oldt who graduated in 1920. Mr. Oldt was a superintendent of Abel Construc-tion Company in Lincoln before moving to Dallas, Texas where he became a prominent general contractor. Mr. Oldt was a generous contributor to many humanitarian and civic organizations. This Floyd S. Oldt Award was designed specifi-cally to honor a UNL employee in a managerial/professional position.
