Architecture in Croatia: 1945-1985Group of Authors

At the moment of its publishing in 1986, the quadrupleedition of Arhitektura entitled Architecture in Croatia:1945-1985 represented the most extensive endeavourof its editorial staff, whose primary task was to createthe first systematic overview of architectural produc-tion in Croatia after the World War II. The cataloguebasis, followed by articles and studies of the impor-tant actors on the architectural stage of that period,

makes a selection and presentation of the productionwhich, often through direct determination, in continu-ation of a rich historical built heritage, created a spa-tial-visual identity of contemporary Croatia.The editorial staff comprised active creators whoseworks shaped the expression of those times in thisregion, as well as established art historians. In creat-ing this important publication, they sought to make aconvincing, authentic and informative catalogue-typeedition that speaks about architecture of one specifictime in history. Nowadays, this presentation of themain factors of architectural standards in Croatia,represents a valuable contribution to the professionand an essential part of the education of new archi-tects.

The book Dubrovnik Centre Behind the City: UrbanTransformation Study presents the results of fourresearch projects which explored the posibility ofurban transformation of the area called Behind theCity, located outside the city walls along the central,northern section of the historical centre of Dubrovnik.The research conducted within the urban planningworkshop was aimed at investigating the opinions ofprofessionals and the general public about the waysin which public interest can be ensured by the activa-tion of the Behind the City area and its transforma-tion into the Centre Behind the City. The internationalcompetition included applicants from various parts ofEurope who proposed innovative urban and architec-tural solutions for a new model of the urban area ofthis challenging location.A synthesis of the results of the conducted researchgave an integral but layered view on the transforma-tion characteristics of Dubrovnik and its Centre be-hind the City, and was consequently tur ned into guide-lines and conclusions on the suitable forms uf urbantransformation of the city.

44th Zagreb Salon: Architecture 06-09Group of Authors

Zagreb Salon - Architecture is a yearly exhibition ofcontemporary Croatian architecture. This is the mostimportant event where Croatian architects have thechance to present their projects, which were designedor built in Croatia. This catalogue shows the best proj-ects incurred in the period between 2006 and 2009,presented with pictures, descriptions and elevations,and thus gives us great insight into contemporary

Croatian architecture. The catalogue is extremelycomprehensive which makes it receptive to archi-tects, as well as the wider interested audience.


Historic Core of Split: Studies -Programmes - Realized ProjectsD. Marasovi

Publication entitled Rehabilitation of the Historic Cor eof Split 5 has initially been conceived as review of thework conducted by the Agency fot the Historic Coresince 1995, the year of its founding. How ever, review ofthis relatively short period of Agency's activity wouldnot be sufficient for the understanding of present con-dition of the historic core and other circumstances

over a longer period of time, nor would the review ofthat period alone show grounds for planned strategyof its rehabilitation, defined in various programs andprojects. The books is conceived in three main chap-ters: the first one brings a short overeview of historicevents, spatial development of the city and charac-teristics of the architectural structure from the city'sbeginnings to the end of the 18th century. The sec-ond chapter summarizes activities in the historic corefrom beginning of the 19th century to the late 20thcentury, while the third one describes activities from1995 until present day.

Katarina 06: Opening of Pula's CoastGroup of Authors

Although all the materials gathered in this bookoriginate from a narrow local framework (the bay ofPula, a town in Istria region), we regard it as valu-able and usable in many other cases. The problemsto which the whole discussion refers are overgrowingthe boundaries of Pula, and even Croatia, because thewhole Mediterranean coast is exposed to the sameproblems. The actions of revitalizati on of the former

military area, presented in this book, are an attemptof establishing an effective social network. The proj-ect, named Katarina 06, originated with the idea oforganizing an architectural workshop, which has de-veloped into a platform for ex military zone uses anddiscussions.


Hotel LoneGroup of Authors

This book presents Hotel Lone, the first design hotelin Croatia, situated in a unique and protected region ofMonte Mulini forest in Rovinj. It was created by a teamof architects, artists, product, fashion and graphicdesigners. The hotels identity is defined by faadesdominant horizontal lines terraces evoking the im-age of slanted boat decks.The conceptual assumptions used in the design of

the hotel and its interior show evidence of a deep re-spect towards the achievements of modernist hotelarchitecture on the Adriatic Coast from the previouscentury, combining it with a strong contemporarityexpressed in materials, functions, typologies and inarchitectural forms.

By publishing this monographic issue of the Arhitek-tura magazine, the Croatian Architects Associationhas not only fullfilled its cultural obligation, but it hasalso answered to the demands for Vitis projectspublications. This issue presents some of the mostimportant and influental Vitis projects, such as:residential complex Laginjina-Vojnovieva Street (Za-greb), the Military Centres (ibenik, Komia), Pavil-

lion 40 at the Zagreb Fair. It is impor tant to emphasizethat these projects could and should find their placein every relevant survey of the European architectureof the 1950s and 1960s. Similar editions havebeen recently published for a number of European cit-ies, indicating not only an increased public interest inmodern architecture, but also a recognized need forits protection and restoration.The central place in the Guide is occupied by the Cata-

logue which shows hundred buildings constructed inSplit between 1901 and 2000; the buildings which, inopinion of the editors, in the best way represent thecentenary of modern architecture in Split.The list covers over 300 buildings considered withinthe framework of the scientific project entitled The20th Century Split Architecture, which has been re-alised at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Archi-tecture in Split.

Due to the importanceof this church, as the first Baroque structure in Croa-tia, and because of its advanced style with respectto similar buildings in the region (Austria, south Ger-many, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia), the book hasbeen translated into English.

Historiografsko tematiziranje ipripovijesno pred-stavljanje discipline ikulturalnog fenomenakojise usuvremenom hrvatskom jeziku standardno oznaavapojmom dizajn svakako nije mogue zapoetibez ne-koliko inicijalnih primjedbikoje se tiu semantikogpoljapojma,a koje ne samo daupuuju naznaenjenego idaju elemenatazahistoriografsku rekonstruk-ciju discipline openito ipojedinanih ostvarenjapo-

sebno.Te se primjedbe prije svegatiu konstrukcije imijenjanjaznaenja pojmadizajn u lokalnom kontek-stu irelacije pojmapremasrodnim pojmovima.Nai-me,pojam dizajn kao jezikaoznakaikao disciplin-skapraksau Hrvatskojpostojiod poetkaezdesetihgodinadvadesetog stoljea,anastao je u uskojvezisindustrijskim modernizacijskim naporimadrutve-ne elite,u pokuaju dase interdisciplinarno promislivezakreativnih potencijalaumjetnostiu sprezisteh-nologijom masovne industrijske proizvodnje,asuva-avanjem naznake trinih zakonitosti.

Afterthe Second World War,in Croatiathere wasacomplete social and political change of the envi-ronment,especiallybe cause the private ownershipwasabolished,mostof the propertywasnationalized,and the economywasorganized in accordance withthe Sovietmodel,where the governmentwasthe onlycorporation.Context- which wasmeantto carryoutthe industrial modernization through the system offive-yearsplan,and through the ideathati twaspo-ssible to entirelyplan to whom and when something

should be produced - still created the ideanotonlyofquantity,butalso of quality.Therefore,bythe end of1940s,bythe orderof the Federal Governmentin allthe republicsof the then SocialistFederal RepublicofYugoslavia,the high schoolsforthe applied artswereintroduced,and in Zagreb in 1949even the Academyof Applied Artswasfounded.Itwasan attemptto actupon the economyfrom the culture sphere on thewave of modernization effortsof the political lite,butthe long-termnessof obviouslyincompletelydesignedsocial projectand itscontradictions,iswitnessed bythe factthatonlyone generation managed to finishthe Academy,because itwasdissolved in 1954.Sti-ll,high schoolsexisted in differentforms,and in this

Presjek is a magazine for architecture conceived as athematic quarterly publication which deals predomi-nantly with Croatian architecture and architecture inthe region.

There are already existent magazines on the mar-ket profiling Croatian and foreign architecture, andrepresenting the professional publics interest. Such

magazines cover contemporary works from a strongtheoretical-based point of view. In addition to archi-tecture such magazines also feature various contem-porary art phenomena.

Although it is set to cover much the same topics,Presjek magazine has a completely different take onthings: it display detailed construction layouts, plansand photographs while accentuating executions andtechnical solutions, while taking care to emphasizearchitectural quality in the process.
