Expanding the Horizon: CroatianUrbanism (1991-2001)Group of Authors

At this moment in time, we can say that the territoryof Croatia, her urban, rural and natural landscapes, have been dismally neglected. There are myriad ex-cuses for this situation, but not a single valid reason. This volume is an original testimony to the profession-al savoir faire, talent and two decades of continuouslabour aiming at adequate and correct approaches to

territory. It is also a story of successfully implement-ed projects, which, although few and far between, stillrepresent evidence of a systematic thought. This volume is the product of exceptional collectiveefforts, from the authors of some six hundred sub-mitted works to the members of the Exhibition andAwards Board of the Urbanist's Season. The Boardhas invested nine months of dedicated work in thispioneering effort of classification and evaluation ofCroatian urbanism for the moment of national inde-pendence.

Unfinished Modernisations: BetweenUtopia and PragmatismGroup of Authors

Unfinished Modernisations: Between Utopia andPragmatism analyzes and compares the productionof built environment in two opposed econom ic and po-litical systems: those of socialist Yugoslavia and themarket-based democracies that emerged out of itscollapse. The region is especially conducive to suchcomparative analysis because its successor states

share the same heritage of a common socialist proj-ect of modernisation, but are at the same time highlydivergent in terms of their social and economic devel-opment. The project identifies and interprets how thespatial politics of the two systems conditioned archi-tectural and urban solutions and their social, ecologi-cal, and cultural impact.

Architecture in Croatia: 1945-1985Group of Authors

At the moment of its publishing in 1986, the quadrupleedition of Arhitektura entitled Architecture in Croatia:1945-1985 represented the most extensive endeavourof its editorial staff, whose primary task was to createthe first systematic overview of architectural produc-tion in Croatia after the World War II. The cataloguebasis, followed by articles and studies of the impor-tant actors on the architectural stage of that period,

makes a selection and presentation of the productionwhich, often through direct determination, in continu-ation of a rich historical built heritage, created a spa-tial-visual identity of contemporary Croatia. The editorial staff comprised active creators whoseworks shaped the expression of those times in thisregion, as well as established art historians. In creat-ing this important publication, they sought to make aconvincing, authentic and informative catalogue-typeedition that speaks about architecture of one specifictime in history. Nowadays, this presentation of themain factors of architectural standards in Croatia, represents a valuable contribution to the professionand an essential part of the education of new archi-tects.

Historic Core of Split: Studies -Programmes - Realized ProjectsD. Marasovi

Publication entitled Rehabilitation of the Historic Cor eof Split 5 has initially been conceived as review of thework conducted by the Agency fot the Historic Coresince 1995, the year of its founding. How ever, review ofthis relatively short period of Agency's activity wouldnot be sufficient for the understanding of present con-dition of the historic core and other circumstances

over a longer period of time, nor would the review ofthat period alone show grounds for planned strategyof its rehabilitation, defined in various programs andprojects. The books is conceived in three main chap-ters: the first one brings a short overeview of historicevents, spatial development of the city and charac-teristics of the architectural structure from the city'sbeginnings to the end of the 18th century. The sec-ond chapter summarizes activities in the historic corefrom beginning of the 19th century to the late 20thcentury, while the third one describes activities from1995 until present day.

Katarina 06: Opening of Pula's CoastGroup of Authors

Although all the materials gathered in this bookoriginate from a narrow local framework (the bay ofPula, a town in Istria region), we regard it as valu-able and usable in many other cases. The problemsto which the whole discussion refers are overgrowingthe boundaries of Pula, and even Croatia, because thewhole Mediterranean coast is exposed to the sameproblems. The actions of revitalizati on of the former

military area, presented in this book, are an attemptof establishing an effective social network. The proj-ect, named Katarina 06, originated with the idea oforganizing an architectural workshop, which has de-veloped into a platform for ex military zone uses anddiscussions.

Architect Viktor Kovai: Life and WorkM. Begovi

Viktor Kovai (18741924) was a Croatian architect. His projects are marked with subtle purity of reducedelements of historicism, like in monumental StockExchange Palace (Croatian: Palaa Burze, today theCroatian National Bank headquarters) in Zagreb,1924. The modern Croatian architecture appearedwith Viktor Kovai who was the first to speak againsthistoricism and represented the idea that architec-

ture must be individual and modern, but also practi-cal and comfortable. From the thirties the works ofZagreb school of architecture can stand alongsidewith the best world architecture. They are especiallyinteresting because of merging of two opposite direc-tions in architecture of those days functionalist andorganic.

It is a monograph about thebest-known Croatian Baroque church (16201632),built as part of the former Jesuit complex in ZagrebsUpper Town. In-depth studies show the historical de-velopment of the church and its rich inventory, which

At Second Glance - The Positions ofContemporary Croatian PhotographyS. Krii Roban

What is photography? Something elusive, writing withlight, or just an image separated from its world?Where does our gaze lead, can we decide to take asingle approach only, a single reading, or is this a de-ception of the eye, as Baudrillard calls it, part of thatunreal play with visual techniques that facilitate thecrumbling of reality, playing with motionlessness,

stillness, reduction? Although two-dimensional, inincredible, sometimes exciting ways photographyreminds us of the multi-dimensionality of the world.Barthes tought that he could only sweep it with hisglance, by placing it into a general context that lacksintimacy, visible to everyone. However, photographyremains yet more inaccessible and mysterious thanthe thought, (...) unrevealed yet manifest, absence-as-presence.

An ambitious exhibition-project called Archaeologyand Tourism was created and, with large number ofassociates, implemented by Sanjin Miheli, a curatorat the Prehistory department of the Archaeologicalmuseum in Zagreb. The exhibition and accompany-ing catalogue are a results of his continuous interestin, as we are used to call them marginal areas ofmodern archaeological practice, in this case the as-

sociation of archaeology with tourism, an extremelyimportant aspect of Croatian economy.Beside the general overview of Croatian archaeologi-cal heritage, with special emphasis on the sites placedonto the World heritage list, theres a special chapterdevoted to the association of underwatwer archaeol-ogy and tourism, wich was for a long time a subjectthat drew huge attention and represents an importantpotential in tourist valorization of the Adriatic.
