ASHRAE Outreach

President’s Message By: John Semtner Outreach has definitely been a theme of ASHRAE recently. It was a goal of mine this year to reach out to two long term Central Oklahoma chapter supporters in OG&E and OSU. Earlier this year we heard from OG&E at our spouse’s night and enjoyed a few new members from that outreach. On Wednesday our chapter meeting will move to Stillwater. We will tour and learn from the design team about the future of the central plant at the heart of their campus. We have nearly 40 students and faculty joining us and are busting this event at the seams! We will hear about current student & faculty research at the University and get the opportunity to honor one of our most well-known members and former OSU faculty; Faye McQuiston. This is going to be a great outreach event to strengthen our bond with one of Oklahoma’s largest HVAC research centers, Oklahoma State University. While one Wednesday will be one of this year’s signature events, it is a far from our only outreach of late. Our Research Promotion 2016 campaign is in the final push and many of our long standing supporters are stepping up to support ASHRAE Research. This campaign supports a significant research investment at both OSU and OU. Please contact our RP chair, Chris Dolan if you would like more information. Our student activity chair, Madison Schultz, has been promoting our event on OSU’s campus and working with UCO on starting a student chapter there. Brian Sauer and Aruna Abhayagoonawardhana are both working with K-12 students and the chapter is supporting competition awards for the Capitol Hill Academy of Engineering and Future City. Our YEA chair, Andy Donahue, coordinated a joint YEA event and refrigeration tour with our local ASPE chapter. Sustainability Chair, Brian Sauer, and YEA Chair, Andy Donehue, are working with on another sustainability day and technical tour at the White Water Facility. A special thanks to Damon McClure for setting that up. Joe Sanders and a great team are getting ready to promote CRC 2017 at this year’s CRC in Texas. Read more on each of these many events below. Maybe the most important outreach was the joint day at the Oklahoma Capitol building that our GGAC, Byron Hughes, set up last month. We not only talked with multiple representatives and senators, but reached out to the staff and entities who are shaping our state’s energy code. We reached out and talked with the Commerce Department, State Energy Office, and the OUBCC Board Chair. We pushed for adoption of current energy codes and improvement of the adoption process. April’s Program: OSU Central Plant Tour By: Michael Wilson

Thanks to Barry Benator from Benatech, Inc. for speaking to at our March meeting over Win-

Win Negotiating Skills. There were good discussions about skills that can be used so both

parties in a negotiation can come out as winners.

Our next meeting will be held in Stillwater the evening of April 6. The evening is packed with

many events and should be a great time. We have over 30 students signed up to participate

as well. FSB and OSU Power Plant will give a tour of their existing plant and present on the design of the new one.

Also, OSU has some exciting projects to discuss with our chapter and Faye McQuiston will be receiving the Lou Flagg

Historical Award. Below is anticipated schedule:

5:00 PM Meet at south overhead doors of Power Plant building (on Hall of Fame). Power Plant Tours and FSB/

OSU Presentation of new Power Plant

6:00 PM Dinner at ATRC Student Excellence Center

6:15 PM ASHRAE Meeting (Power Plant Q&A, Lou Flagg Historical Award, Professor Bach Presentation, OSU

Senior Design Presentation)

7:30 PM Conclude

8:00 PM YEA event at Eskimo Joe’s

Also, we will have three host sites for this year’s ASHRAE webcast (Guernsey, R.B. Akins, and OSU-Stillwater). The title

of this webcast is “Making Net Zero Net Positive: Solving the Efficiency & Cost Paradox”. Like last year, this is BYOL

(bring your own lunch). It will be April 21st from 12:00-3:00 pm. An invite will be sent in the next couple of weeks.

Looking ahead, May will be our final chapter meeting of the year. It will be over Acoustics 101. Be on the lookout for

further details.

If you have any ideas for events, want to get involved, or if you want to sponsor an event please contact me. Michael

Student Activities ASHRAEcok at OCCC By: Madison Schultz

Last month Student Activates hosted two events. The first was in association with our student branch at OSU. SA taught part of the Thermodynamics 2 class and advertised our next monthly chapter meeting which will be held on campus on Wednesday, April 6. See our website and Facebook page for more information.

The second event was held at UCO. UCO has a budding engineering school with several ABET accredited degrees. The students and faculty are eager to form a student chapter and get more involved. Our next Student Activities event will be at OCCC. We will be touring their central plant. Exact date TBD. We will keep you updated through social media. Enthusiastic ASHRAEers are welcome to attend! Please contact me for more information. We are always looking for more ASHRAEers to join SA as regular committee members or one-time volunteers. If you want to get involved with SA or sponsor an upcoming event, please contact me at 405-416-8205 or [email protected].

Membership Promotion Update on COK’s Membership By: Daniel Brazeale We are doing great as a chapter on retaining new members, recruiting new members, and convincing old members to come back. Our net increase in membership so far this year is at 11 with our goal for the ASHRAE Calendar being 6. With that said we have 7 members currently on the delinquency report expected to fall off by the end of the year. Please send any potential members my way so we can reach out to them and see if ASHRE is a good fit.

We had the following new individuals sign up this last month: Randy Jones Matt Kwiatkowski Tyson Stout Melissa Lowry Please join me in welcoming these new members and if you see them at any ASHRAE events please introduce yourself! If you happen to run across any of the new members at the next meeting, please reach out to them and make them feel welcome. Let’s make sure we’re keeping our roster updated. Please let me know if someone you know has moved out of our chapter, left the industry, or has passed away. Additionally, if you need help registering for membership, renewing your membership or simply want to chat feel free to email or call. Daniel Brazeale can be reached at 405-464-3677 or [email protected]

Honor & Awards Recognized Service By: Tino Mendez

I was recently notified that the Society's Honors and Awards Committee did not evaluate our

application to elevate Dr. Jerald D. Parker to the Membership Grade of Fellow since he died prior

to their meeting. Although I do not agree with their decision, I can understand their reasoning.

At present there are only two Society Awards that are presented posthumously, The Hall of

Fame and The Pioneers of Industry Awards.

This was discussed at our last Board of Governors meeting and the consensus was that a change in Society policy is

warranted. Consequently, I will be writing a Motion to be presented at the CRC in Tyler to ask for a change in the

policy that would allow any Society Committee to proceed with the evaluation of the application if the Member to be

honored is alive at the time the application is submitted and dies before the Committee meets. The award to be

presented posthumously.

Although we did not succeed in the case of Dr. Parker it was rewarding to those involved that he was able to read the

application and all the reference letters that show how much his lifework was appreciated by his peers.

This is one good reason for us to bring up individuals we know need to be recognized as soon as possible.

Historian Message History of Lou Flagg By: Dusty Stoabs

Louis F. Flagg was born in 1914 in Maine, prior to World War I, but his family moved to Washington D.C. when he was four years old. He grew up in D.C. and, like so many do, decided to become an engineer because he was good in math and science. He had his sights

set on attending MIT but the Great Depression prevented that from becoming a financial reality. As a fall back, he attended the University of Maryland right there the greater D.C. area. Lou graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree in 1936, and with the depression still lingering on, he felt fortunate to find a job when he started working for a Honeywell distributor in D.C. as a Sales Engineer of electrical control systems. He shortly was moved into pneumatic controls sales, which were new at the time, and quickly became a controls authority, working on some of the largest pneumatic controls jobs in the world. The U.S. was thrust into World War II in 1941 and Lou became a Communications Officer in the Army’s 39th Infantry. Things moved rapidly and he ascended to rank of Captain and ultimately lead a Company of soldiers in the invasion of North Africa. As a lieutenant colonel, he left the Service after the war and applied to Honeywell for a position as a Sales Engineer in the D.C. office. He was rehired, and with his five years of previous controls experience before the war and his leadership experienced gained in the Service, he was promptly promoted to Manager of service and installation over 13 branch offices on the east coast. Lou joined ASHVE (the original name of ASHRAE) in 1947 and was a member of what’s now the National Capital Chapter in D.C. After a few years traveling the east coast managing the branch offices, he transferred to the Honeywell headquarters in Minneapolis and shortly was put in charge of the training program. Around 1953, Lou was asked to co-author the chapter on controls in the ASHVE The Guide (the forerunner to the current ASHRAE Handbook series). ASHVE changed their name to ASHAE in 1954 and Lou started to become more involved in Society activities. He was soon promoted from Guide controls chapter author to a member of the committee over the entire handbook. When ASHAE and ASRE combined to form ASHRAE in 1959, the ASHAE Guide and the ASRE Data Book were combined to form the ASHRAE Guide and Data Book and Lou was chairman of the handbook committee during through the merger. Later he moved from chairman of the handbook committee to chairman of the ASHRAE Journal committee establishing himself as a leader in ASHRAE publishing. Lou retired at age 70 from Honeywell as manager of product distribution and administration, but continued on in ASHRAE, always being on at least one Society committee since 1958. Lou moved through publishing, finance, programs, research and technology, board of directors, and eventually was elected to Society President in 1988-89. His presidential theme was “Communications: A Formula for Progress”. Lou also had a slogan that he lived by: “Let the process work.” Lou would use that slogan whenever someone wanted to prematurely change things up without letting prior plans and processes have a chance to succeed. While President, Lou made forty trips on behalf of ASHRAE including four to Europe. 2007. (Cont’d)

Historian Message History of Lou Flagg By: Dusty Stoabs (Cont’d)

Starting as an engineering graduate with no connections, Lou soared through the ranks in the Army, at Honeywell, and in ASHRAE, giving evidence of his intelligence, leadership abilities, persistence and hard work ethic. Louis F. Flagg passed away in 1999 at the age of 85. In 2002, ASHRAE established the annual Lou Flagg Historical Award to recognize the vital role historians play in identifying and preserving the accomplishments of its members and the industry. It is presented at the Society annual meeting to the individual who prepares the most outstanding historical presentation nominated during the current society year.

Oklahoma Future City

As you know ASHRAE is a proud supporter of the Oklahoma Future City competition. In past years our members have served as mentors, judges, and coordinators for the state competition. Several schools are in need of mentors. If you are interested in volunteering to mentor a team, please let me know ASAP. Mentors usually just meet with their team 3-4 times during the fall school semester. The teams can usually work to make it fit into the mentor's schedule. Also, Future City has modified its scope slightly to incorporate the Project Management Process. This means that professional project managers would be great mentors as well (whether they are engineers or not). The theme of this year's Future City Competition is solid waste/trash. If you would like to learn more about the Oklahoma Future City competition, please visit http://futurecity.org/showcase/presenting-city-17 Please contact Aruna at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer. Thank you for your help.
