Why I love Upper HuttSteve BrattleMusician, and owner/manager of family business Dzine Signs Steve was born in a small town (Morpeth) 30 miles from the Scottish border, he came to New Zealand in 1961 at the age of 10. The family settled in the Hutt Valley and Steve did the rest of his growing up here. As he grew into adulthood it wasn’t to be long before he became a proud “Upper Hutt-ite”.

1968 was a big year for Steve, not only did he start work as an apprentice sign writer, he also started his first band (Frame Of Mind). He’s never stopped sign writing or singing – just got better and better.

Steve started his own company, Dzine Signs, in the family garage and since then it has grown from strength to strength. He now works with his wife, sons and daughter-in-laws from a 500 sq. m. factory in Jupiter Grove.

Dzine Signs is a national gold award winner – best small Upper Hutt business 2008 and

Finalists in the Wellington Gold Awards. Steve and the team pride themselves in producing high quality signs that work for their clients.

Steve now also performs all around the country with his nine piece Joe Cocker tribute band. Hitchcock Railway.

Why I love Upper Hutt Steve says:- Upper Hutt is beaut-iful. It has some of the best parks in the world and a beautiful river for swimming and fishing and stunning river, hill and mountain views.

I can sit and look at the Rimutaka mountain range in the morning while eating breakfast at the back of my house and relax in the evening sitting on my front deck looking at the sunset down the valley – it’s magic.

Upper Hutt is rich in musical talent and artists. “I am lucky to have been involved with up and coming new talent and have seen some young talent become world class

“It must be in the water!”

An Upper Hutt ‘ite is a person

who not only lives here, but who is involved in some sort of activity that helps promote the place. I love that I can walk around town and see so many wonderful Upper Hutt-ites and would like to also consider myself a true Upper Hutt-ite.

Favourite Place to ShopSteve says: I love going to Mitre 10 Mega on a lazy Sunday, having a mooch around the huge range of products on display, then finishing off with a nice coffee in their Espresso Garden cafe.

Favourite Place to EatSteve says: The best restaurant in the greater Wellington area, without a doubt, is Bell House. Everytime we go there the food is brilliant. It’s a hidden gem - great place and great food. Plus I love Little India – try all their extras like coconut, bananas and mango chutney – YUM!

Favourite Place to Take Visitors to the CitySteve says: The range of Upper Hutt parks. We have had people stay with us from overseas and

they all say Upper Hutt is the best

place in the world because of the

wonderful green parks. Harcourt is

a favourite because I like to show

off the fantastic stage of course , I

wonder who designed that?

Favourite thing to do with family/friendsSteve says:- Ilove to take the whole family up to Kaitoke water works for a picnic tea. Its bliss, the river, the trees, the scenery and the peacefulness.

By BOB FOXBanker Chris Northmore was 36, and I guess life was good as he, wife Linda and two daughters spent a week in Fiji five years ago. When he thought about it, Chris was getting sick of the travel and working for bank shareholders who were a world away in Europe.Awake at 3am he composed a somewhat idealistic business plan – part of his banking skills. He found his niche, a place where his love of beautiful timbers, both new and old, found root.James Henry Northmore was Chris’s grandfather, and the James Henry name had that lovely solid look and feel about it as joiners and flooring specialists. So that was the company name sorted.Chris and his nine staff use beautiful, new clean sustainable wood, but they specialise in recycled materials.James Henry’s product is about quality. At recent significant project is a recycled Matai floor in the Wharewaka on the Wellington’s waterfront, with the contract gained on the back of good work done for the Wharewaka builder, L T McGuiness. In another project the James Henry team built and installed a three-storey rimu staircase in a boutique hotel in Hobson Street in Thorndon, one that had the Wow factor. This month they’re laying a new floor in the Mac’s Brew Bar on the Taranaki Street wharf adjacent to the Wharewaka. And they’ll also do your kitchen floor, or your staircase too. But at what premium?“I was at a conference in Australia last week where we worked out the Aussies are charging a 50 to 60 percent premium for recycled “Ironic really, with recycled costing more than new.” The margin is heading that way in New Zealand too.

There’s quite a bit of extra work with recycled, like having a sophisticated metal detector to hunt any rogue nails in the big beams that come in, often from buildings such as the one they occupy, and the compressed air tools to get the nails and bolts

out. He winces at the thought of a saw finding that missed nail and the downtime that results as a machine blade is re-sharpened or replaced. The metal detector was specially built for him by an expert in Auckland.

For their work dry timber is essential, so is their ability to buy when demolition timber becomes available.“We’ve built up some pretty good relationships with demolition contractors. We often take it all, and we pay on time – which can be unusual for this industry. If they try to cherry pick the best timber for another buyer, we tend to leave it alone so we don’t get left with the rubbish”And, he said, they’re reliable on pickups. Often contractors will

call about a job, you know, that I told you was coming up. Well, here we are, and the police are telling us to get the timber off the road and let the traffic through now. It’s at times like that when the boss becomes the truckdriver, like on the day the Star visited.Often when driving through Mangaroa Valley on Parkes Line Road, you’ll see the old Army sheds flash by and wonder ‘what’s in there?’.

New is beautiful, but old is priceless

James Henry tradesmen joint the matai floorboards for their next job.

From the stack in Shed 8, the dirty, greying timber emerges again as a glow-ing layer of glowing beauty –and sustainable.

"Trusted Property Management Specialists for over 25 years"

By MARY-ANNE THOMSONAfter 22 years in business Uptown Gym has been bought by cityfitness.Former owner Sue Ward will stay with the organisation though not in the day-to-day running of the Upper Hutt Club. All staff have been offered jobs with the new club.Cityfitness took over from February 1 with re-branding of the building happening more recently. The exterior is now clearly cityfitness after re-painting in cityfitness colours, re-glazing with glass with cityfitnesslogos, Uptown signs coming down and cityfitness ones going up.Jane Verry, has started as Manager and says that the transition to cityfitness will be gentle as Sue had created a great culture and

gym with well m a i n t a i n e d facilities.“We don’t plan to change a n y t h i n g hugely in the m e a n t i m e because we don’t want to upset current m e m b e r s e x p e r i e n c e with too many changes.“In the future we will have lots of exciting things happening. We have some great things happening in our other clubs that we can use here in the future – watch this space.“The culture and facilities are already of a very high standard however we will be doing some interior renovations and introducing some exciting new programmes in the future, which will only build on the already strong club,” she says.Upper Hutt is cityfitness’s 16th club. But it still remains a family owned and operated business. The very first club was born in Porirua some 20 years ago and is still owned and operated by the very same family. “cityfitness clubs are for average people wanting to lead a healthy lifestyle. We pride ourselves on our service and friendly feel.

“We aim to greet everyone personally as they come in, not just have them tag in in an impersonal way. We will know all our members names and share their progress with them.“I am extremely honoured to now be based in Upper Hutt, the fourth cityfitness club I have had the pleasure of working in,” Jane says.

Jane has 25 years experience in the health and fitness industry first starting as a group fitness instructor. She later began work with cityfitness in Blenheim, then Napier and for the last 12 months, Kapiti.

She says group fitness is still one of her passions but she has recently retired from instructing. “Even though that passion is still strong, unfortunately the body struggles to keep up with the mind, hence I retired some 12 months ago,” she says.

“I am also a qualified Personal Trainer and have had a successful business in this area in the past, however as time has marched on, I have found my strengths to have moved to a management role which is something that I find extremely rewarding.

“I am looking forward to working with the people of Upper Hutt. We are extremely lucky to have a wonderful team of staff here, who are eager and excited with the way 2011 is heading.”

New cityfitness club manager, Jane Verry looks forward to meeting the locals.

Rebranding started recently. The Uptown sigN sits alongside new cityfitness glazing.

New group settles into Upper Hutt ‘cityfitness’ scene

Inside Shed 8, just south of the big dipper on Parkes Line Road is James Henry. In there with an impressive store of recycled and new timbers, is the drier, the planners, jointers and saws, the stair specialist and their stocks of imported hardwoods, the American Oaks, and Maple, along with Jarrah and Tasmanian and Victorian Oaks.“Timber from local trees that have died standing, Matai, Rimu, Totora and Kauri. Then there’s the trees that have been washed out in floods.Sheds ‘like this’ offer hidden treasure as the roof trusses are unbolted from beautiful Oregon and Rimu beams.Life now is not about travel and airport lounges, but about hopping down the road to Maymorn where he, Linda and the kids live. Linda is staff too, with a close watch on the working capital and very quick

to point out there’s too much stock on site.“But you’ve got to store this timber inside. Timber stored under tarps outside, or under corrugated iron is never dry. To work it properly, it must be completely dry.”Hence the dehumidifying kiln drier in an old shipping container inside the shed. All local staff llive in Upper Hutt, but the ninth lives in Tauranga as a fulltime installer covering the northern area.“He’s also handy to bring here when we’re really tight, like just before Christmas,” he says. While Chris originally saw himself as the conductor, there have been some changes. On busy days, he is also the truck driver, or the cleaner. But his whole team does have a very important message for one another – “Whatever you do, don’t let Chris touch the tools”. Not my strong point, he admits.

Glen McArthur is one of three new faces at the Up-per Hutt City Council table for the rest of the trien-nium.So you know the people representing you at coun-cil, in the next few weeks the Upper Hutt Star will introduce you to the new-bies.You can look forward to meeting Dave Wheeler shortly.

DEVELOPMENT FINANCESPECIALIST FOR SELF EMPLOYED BORROWERS

Local sports man aced it second shot

By BOB FOXGlen McArthur wasn’t going to run for council in 2010.He’d tried and missed in 2007, and he confesses it rocked his ego somewhat. Run again, nah! For an articulate and forceful ideas man, he has a shy streak, and doesn’t like blowing his own trumpet. He had never sought the limelight, and didn’t like the politics of the back rooms. He didn’ want to become a political animal. As the days counted down to deadline, friends and business acquaintances got at him. It

was his civic duty. G’wan, you complain enough. Put your time and money where your mouth is!So in went the nomination and – remembering his big lesson from a largely inactive ’07 campaign, he got to work with his advertising, attending candidates meetings whenever asked, and making certain his views were heard. For him, as an Upper Hutt boy, it was all about putting back into his community.“It was very humbling,” he said, when he got the call with the poll results, on the Council, and at No 8 on the list.It will enable him to keep close watch on his key project, the city development of an all sports facility at Maidstone Park. As current chairman of the Upper Hutt Rugby he has been an active advocate for the concept that all sports should benefit there.“As a councillor, I will take a close interest how it’s done, and that it is done. It will be really exciting watching that happen.”Growth of the city is, however, his number one priority. “We have the best potential, with all that land that’s available.”He is doing more listening, certainly more than he had historically been able to do, and is finding the council environment really interesting and challenging, yet fun.

“It’s all about democracy,” he says. He sees people come to the council table with very definite views. Sometimes they win because of the power of their argument, sometimes they lose.“That is democracy.”

Glen McArthur came to the council table with definite standards and ethics, but aware he must not pre-determine issues.

“The discussion and debate is the lifeblood of democracy. I’ve surprised myself that after pre-reading papers and forming an opinion, that the discussion and debate has totally changed my mind. It’s vital you remain open-minded.”

His working life has been in banking and finance since his Upper Hutt School/Heretaunga College education. He did not go on to university – ‘I was a bit of a lad’, my mother says, for whom rugby and basketball were his life – but got a job in banking

and finance before setting up as a mortgage broker in Upper Hutt through the 90s.

His playing career in rugby was at the highest level in Upper Hutt, and for Tech Old Boys in Hawke’s Bay, but wheh they came back into the valley with the three children, it was easy to move right back in as the children played sport, working on the committee for the 10 years till 2006, the last four as chairman.

Approached again last year, he offered two more years. But is adamant that finishes this year.

Looking for a change from the finance area – he was one of the five people who set up the New Zealand Mortrgage Brokers Association to boost standards in the industry – he joined older brother Mark in McArthur Real Estate in Gibbons Street in August 2009, a company set up by their father, who died only recently.

Glen was looking for change. At 54, he certainly has that.

Silverstream’s Clare McCaul has been selected to represent New Zealand in the Singles for this year’s Trans Tasman tournament.

When Bowls New Zealandnamed their teams, Clare was also named to skip the Pair in the Under-25 Women’s event in Adelaide, South Australia from 9 to 11 April.

Clare had a great year in

2010 winning both the NZ Open Pairs and the Australian Open Triples titles, as well as regularly representing Wellington in provincial events.

Silverstream Bowling and Petanque Club are holding a special fundraising event in honour of Clare’s national selection today, February 25 with a Mixed 6’s tournament.

Spectators are welcome – the event starts at 9am.

Jonny Higham, 8 (left) has been on skates since he was four and started going to inline hockey with his Dad and older brother Sam. Being allowed to skate around was a way of keeping him occupied while Sam played hockey. On his fifth birthday Jonny was allowed to put on hockey gear and since then, there has been no holding him back. He now plays on the Rimutaka Renegades Under 10’s team and is pretty good too!Jonny was one of the players who demonstrated his puck skills - on wheels – at Rimutaka

Renegades free public open house last Sunday night. The Rimutaka Inline Hockey Club will be holding another Open House, “give it a go” session next week so the public can watch demos from some of the club’s under 10 and under 12 players and even bring along their own skates and have a go at the sport themselves. Some Rimutaka Renegades members who have been chosen to play for New Zealand will also be on hand to talk about the sport. Local coach, Sandy Nimmo says it’s one of the “fastest and most exciting sports on the

planet – and best of all its played by kids of all ages and adults.“This is hockey on rollerblades – and at top level is the fastest team sport anywhere,” Ms Nimmo says. The local club has teams for under tens through to seniors and masters and is looking for new players at all levels. The teams train weekly at the club facility at 34b Goodshed Road

Upper Hutt. The final open house will be held on Sunday March 6 from 11am to 5pm, at 34B Goodshed Road. More information from Ms Nimmo – phone 5264765.

‘Whanau tupu ngatahi - Families growing together’

By MARY-ANNE THOMSONTayla, Zoe, Thea, Ella and Katie from Upper Hutt’s 8th Pencarrow Pippins are waiting excitedly for March 1 – that’s when the Girl Guide Biscuits and merchandise they are holding hits the streets.

After complaints last year about biscuits not tasting the same as the “old style guide biscuits”, Griffins has told the Guide organisation they have gone back to the old style guide biscuits that customers have known, for (most of) the last 54 years they have been selling.

This year sees some other changes too.

The packaging of the large plain and chocolate biscuits has changed and the Guide logo on the larger biscuits has been updated to Guides new one, rather than the old style trefoil.

At biscuit stalls (not door to door) there is a tin available at $8 per tin and customers can try before they buy. Guide

biscuits and merchandise will be available during March at Westpac Bank, Upper Hutt and The Mad Butcher, Upper Hutt.

There will also be special stalls - Saturday March 5 they will be at The Mall from 9am – 3pm,Caltex Rimutaka from 7.30am - 3pm, Salvation Army Church 9am – 3pm and Silverstream Shops, 9am - 3pm. On Saturday March 12 there will be stalls at The Mall, 9am – 3pm and Silverstream Shops 9am – 3pm and on Sunday March 13 at the Mall from 10am-3pm.

Biscuits are $3 for plain and $3.50 for both the large chocolate, and the mini chocolates.

Toy Library to open soon with new toys Upper Hutt Toy Library’s has new toys and new hours from March 1.Opening hours are changing to better suit the needs of local families. There will be an earlier start on Thursdays and extended Saturday hours.New hours are Tuesdays 10am to 12 noon, Thursdays Noon to 2pm and 10am to 1pm on Saturdays. The library is open these hours through all school holidays, except for two weeks over Christmas. The Upper Hutt Toy Library has had many improvements in the last few months, and co-ordinator, Vicki Lock says there are more to be made in the near future. Many new toys have just been added, including Mocka balance bikes (otherwise known as run bikes), water tables for sand and water play, musical instruments, and wooden puzzles. Packaging, so that the toys will travel better and be better displayed, is in the process of being upgraded.A new computer system, has been introduced which when upgraded further in the future will enable

scanning of membership cards and toys. The Upper Hutt Toy Library caters for babies from about three months old through to children of around eight. They even have a few toys and games suitable for older children. The membership base includes families; grandparents who have their grandchildren visit occasionally from out of town; nannies; and schools. A member-ship fee is charged and then each time an item is borrowed there is a small rental charge, which is worked out based on what the toy cost to buy. Rental fees currently range from 50 cents to $5 for a two-week hire. Operating in Upper Hutt for nearly 20 years, the Toy Library has been located in five different venues. Currently it is opposite the Cossie Club in Logan St, next door to the Citizens Advice Bureau. New members encouraged, Upper Hutt residency is a pre-requisite. For more information visit http://www.upperhuttcommunity.net/uhtoylib/, or drop in and visit during opening hours.

Kathryn, Jennifer and Sophie have fun with some of the new toys just added to the Upper Hutt Toy Library catalogue.

The “Racing Baa Blacks” make their North Island debut at the Pelorus Trust Upper Hutt Summer Carnival on Saturday 26 February at Trentham Memorial Park. They are a group of specially trained cross-bred sheep that hoof along a specially created 80 metre racetrack. As they fly out the starting gate in their numbered racing livery they leap over low level pipes along the way to add excitement to the race. They have proved a big hit in the South Island and have attracted international media attention.David Cone, the owner, sheep and wool consultant does not give away any training tips and the specific breed is a protected trade secret.Five sheep races will be held on the day from 11.30am with some children’s events in between. The racing can be an effective fundraiser for organisations as tickets are sold before the event and on race day. Winning ticket holders take home prizes and the participating group can fundraise along the way.Having a commentator able to handle the highly charged event is important and well known Wel-lington personality Nick Tansley also makes his debut as a race caller.

Woolly Jumpers return Carnival to rural roots

Chief organiser Kevin Joyce says he is really pleased the the Council’s Activation Unit has organised a sports club expo at the carnival to help promote

healthy lifestyles.

You will be able to check out a range of sports and also pick up Upper Hutt Sports Awards 2011 entry forms on the day as entries close on Saturday 5 March .

Upper Hutt rural realtor Grant Campbell believes he can pinpoint the month the current recession eased its grip on the local rural market.

“September, last year.”

It had been tight, no doubt about it, before that but Grant now sees the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel ‘Which doesn’t appear too be the Train’.

Rural and subdivision specialist for Gillies & Mark Realty – he’s been with The Professionals for 21 years – Grant has a big territory. From its southern boundary in Silverstream to the northern at the top of the Rimutaka Hill, the city encompasses an area of 53,962 hectares, making Upper Hutt one of the largest cities by area in New Zealand.

He notes that although numbers may have been down in recent years, good bare lifestyle blocks have held their value.

The recent offering of eight Parkes Line Road blocks in the Mangaroa Valley had been very successful, with seven sold between $480,000 and $520,000 for the four-hectare lifestyle blocks, and the eighth currently under offer.

“Generally, enquiries have been quite steady up to now,” Grant said.

Two blocks in Whitemans Valley

came on the market only three weeks ago, and already the larger one is under offer, with solid interest in the second.

“The important thing is they must be priced correctly. Any land, rural or urban, if they are perceived by a prospective purchaser to be over-priced they will ‘stick’.”

In the same Mangaroa (northern end) of the valleys, he has three four-hectare blocks on offer at $500,000.

“They are pristine blocks on some of the best, most fertile land in the valley.”

On the other side of the Upper Hutt Valley, there is a significant block for sale, just under 200 hectares up on the top of Moonshine Hill Road.

The Professionals are about to go to the market with a Wallaceville Hill subdivision that backs on to Kingsley Heights on the other side of the hill.

“This will be interesting, as these are generally smaller, in the 6700 sq m to 2.6 hectares range, and they will be selling between $200-350,000.”and will offer a different rural option.

Grant Campbell believes that for many lifestylers, the four-hectare minimum imposed by the Upper Hutt City Council is too large and many purchasers are forced into these lots purely by Local Council

Regulations then by choice.

“Many of them don’t want to be ‘farming’, all they are after is the rural view, with possibly a few sheep to keep the grass down, or enough to have the kids’ horses running around. Sort of classic ride-on mower territory.”

In a depressive economy, Grant has observed it is now cheaper for aspiring buyers to buy bare land, then build their dream home than to buy a block with an existing house.

“Some of these existing homes were built during the ‘ boom’years and are in a different section of the market, where there has not been a lot of activity for the last two years. Buyers now are looking at new, low-maintenance houses, where things are looking pretty positive moving forwards.”

Even with the large Upper Hutt area, Grant believes there will always be a shortage of flat valley land. Having worked with the Professionals for 21 years,

the last 16 of them with Malcolm Gillies, he’s been a major part of some very special rural and residential subdivisions.

Grant is from a pioneering sawmilling family who arrived in Upper Hutt in 1904. Farming himself in Mangaroa from 1960-2004. He served two terms on the Upper Hutt City Council as the

Rural Representative on the then Town Planning Committee.

With a real estate career beginning in 1990, Grant has witnessed and been part of the significant changes which have occurred both Rurally and ‘In Town’. He has sold close too 600 properties with a value of approximately $130 million.

Grant Campbell - sees trends changing in rural market

Rural upturn leads way?

By MARY-ANNE THOMSONThe red colouring in the water when Larsen Codyre, 4 showed Labour Leader Phil Goff and local MP Chris Hipkins how to work the water wheels at Totara Park Kindergarten last week, was purely co-incidental….so staff say.Co-incidental or not, children enjoyed the visit and felt very important having the Labour leader at their kindy.Mr Goff visited the Rimutaka electorate last week, with a comprehensive programme including visits to the kindy, Whakatiki Engineering, Dunlop Café, and a walk along Upper Hutt’s Main Street to meet and greet the locals. It was Mr Goff’s fifth visit to the electorate since the last election and Mr Hipkins says, the regularity at which the Mr Goff visits the area, highlights Labour’s commitment to

the Hutt Valley. “There are a lot of demands on Phil’s time, so I’m really pleased he’s been able to spend so much time out here in the Hutt. I think in a lot of ways our local community provides a snapshot of New Zealand, we’ve really got a bit of everything,” Mr Hipkins said.First up on the agenda was a visit to the morning session of Totara Park kindergarten, where the MPs met with Head teacher, Janet Delany and the head of the Rimutaka Kindergarten Association, Jane Braun. Mr Goff used that visit to highlight Labour’s commitment to restoring funding to early childhood education services with fully qualified staff.“Every dollar we spend on kids when they’re this age has the potential to save us many more dollars further down the track. We know that kids who attend early

childhood education are more likely to succeed at school, more likely to get jobs, and they’re less likely to end up in prison later in life. It’s a no brainer really,” Mr Goff said. The next stop was Whakatiki Engineering in Trentham. Co-owners Murray Scaife and Scott Barr said their business had managed to survive through the recession due to some large contracts including work at Wellington High School and the construction of a brand new school at Churton Park. The two MPs joined the staff for morning tea before heading into the CBD for a walk down Main Street.

Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy, the Chair of Upper Hutt Chamber of Commerce, Sue Trueman and Director of ‘Experience Upper Hutt’ Hellen Swales joined Mr Goff and Mr Hipkins as they spoke to local residents doing their shopping and checked out some of Upper Hutt’s retail offerings.

Affordable housing was the main item on the agenda for a working lunch at Dunlop Café with local business people, where Mr Goff also met the owners, Theresa Ipsolis and Ma-ria Martin, who are developing their hospitality training centre out of the former Dunlop factory’s administration offices.

On the way back to Parliament

Larsen Codyre, 4, tells Phil Goff and Chris Hipkins  how to work the water trough at Totara Park Kindergarten. Red Water? Nice touch guys.

Later in the afternoon Mr Goff and Mr Hipkins visited Taita College. “Last year we visited the senior students at Heretaunga College, this year we went to Taita. I think it’s really important that our senior school students have the chance to meet real politicians, learn about the political process, and ask a few tricky questions. All of the research shows that if someone votes at the first election they’re eligible to vote

in, then they’re more likely to keep voting throughout their lives,” Mr Hipkins said.Mr Goff said the day had been incredibly valuable and he’d appreciated the warm welcome he had received. “It’s important to make time to visit communities and not get locked up in parliament, because out here is where we hear the true concerns of the people,” Mr Goff said.

What colour should the water be today, Um! Let’s think

By MARY-ANNE THOMSONOne of New Zealand’s best stand up comedians, Brendhan Lovegrove will be in Upper Hutt next month for two shows only.Winner of the Best Male comedian Award at the 2010 NZ Comedy Guild Awards and star of numerous local television programmes including all eight series of PULP COMEDY TV, the last series of which he hosted, Brendhan will play two shows at the BoileRoom on March 5. The first is at 4.30pm, the second at 7.30pm.This is only the second time he has performed in Upper Hutt – he had a sold out show at the BoileRoom in May 2010, so this year because of demand, he is playing two shows. Tickets are $14.50 and for a group of four or more, $13.50.MC for the night is Wellington stand up comedian, Jerome Chandrahasen. Jerome has performed in every NZ International Comedy Festival since 2004. In the past year he has MC’d for the likes

of Dave Dobbyn and Flight of the Conchords, as well as appeared on TV2’s Christmas Comedy Cracker with Rhys Darby. He has run comedy at Mayfair Cafe since 2009 with a monthly gig that has hosted performers from around the country.Jerome says “this gig is a rare chance for locals to see Brendhan in an intimate setting.“He is so busy with national and international gigs, that he doesn’t get to the Wellington region very often and when he does he is usually in large theatres. The BoileRoom is such an intimate setting, Upper Hutt people are really lucky.“I would say he is one of the sharpest acts in NZ comedy at the moment.”“Brendhan’s television appearances include countless spots on New Zealand’s foremost stand up show ‘Pulp Comedy’, the last series of which he hosted. In the UK he featured on ‘Live at Jongleurs’ in two television episodes. He also featured on Australian television in the Gala telecast as part of the Sydney Cracker Comedy Festival 2006,” he says.Brendhan returned to NZ in 2006 after living and working for three years in the United Kingdom, where he performed as the headline act (for the most part) in all the main

It looks like a sell-out for Brendhan Lovegrovecomedy clubs including Jongleurs, The Comedy Store, The Glee Club and Up the Creek. In 1998 Brendhan was the recipient of the Billy T Award for Comedy in New Zealand. After winning that prestigious award he travelled and performed at international comedy festivals throughout the world including Scotland, Canada and England. Brendhan returned home annually to contribute his own show for the New Zealand Laugh Festival and is now living in Auckland. In 2006 Brendhan was judged New Zealand’s Best Stand-up Comedian at the Oddfellows NZ International Comedy Festival., and named Best Male Comedian in the 2009 and 2010 NZ Comedy Guild Awards. The BoileRoom Boutique Beer and Wine Bar is in Geange Street, or can be accessed through the Mayfair Café. It has become known for its monthly comedy nights – Saturday Night Live Laughs – pro talents are announced every month.

At the opposite end of the scale - new last week was “Raw Meat”

Raw Meat Thursdays are being held every first and third Thursday of the month and designed to give those new to stand up comedy (the raw meat part) the chance to get on stage and those more experienced, with the stage, a chance to try new material for the first time in front of an audience.

“We haven’t done these open mic nights before but our first one last Thursday went really well Jerome says.

Tickets to Raw Meat nights are $5. The next planned Raw Meat nights are March 3 and 17 and April 7 and 21. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the BoileRoom or Mayfair Café and if not sold prior may be available at the door on the night.Anyone wanting to have the chance to get on stage can contact Jerome to register by e-mailing [email protected]
