NEWSLETTER 11/12 March 2017
SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT/A READINGS: Genesis 12:1-4; 2 Timothy 1:8-10
GOSPEL: Matthew 17:1-9
Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish
Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.
Be Not Afraid... Moses goes up the mountain alone, Jesus takes companions with him who share in the experience and witness to it. The face of God is hidden from Moses whereas on Tabor Jesus is given to us as the face of God for the world. On Sinai Moses receives a code of law and is told to make sure the people obey it. On Tabor Jesus receives a proclamation of God’s love and we’re told to listen to him. While Moses’ face shines, Jesus’ whole body is transfigured with light. Moses descends to enforce the law; Jesus comes down to die that we might live. Just when some of us think Lent is a grim season of self-denial, the Church gives us the story of Jesus’ Transfiguration to put our sacrifices in context. The only reason we deny ourselves anything or commit ourselves to actions of service for these 40 days is to grow more deeply in love with the God who loves us into life. Penance is not meant to attack our self-esteem, it’s intended to help us sort out what really matters, to cast some light in the darkness of our lives and to focus on the relationship which gives meaning and purpose for this world and the next. The God of Mount Tabor is not interested in each of us feeling isolated as we fulfil the letter of a legal code. He wants all of us to have hearts that listen to the Gospel of love so that we can gain the power to transform the world through the sacrifices of our daily lives. On a much gentler scale, Sunday Mass is meant to be a weekly mountaintop experience for us where we hear God call us by name and confess his love for us; where we feel re-energised for the commission we have to bear his light to the world. In this context anything we can do this Lent that helps remove the blocks in our full response to his love, must be worth effort.

In Gratitude Baptism Preparation is foundational for parish life. After 15 years, John Bates and Julian Vedalago have hung up their Baptismal Preparation Facilitator hats as their life takes a different direction. Every first Monday of the month, even on long weekends, John and Julian have been there to welcome and support all new and existing families who were preparing their children for Baptism. In the beginning, wives Lisa and Jen were by their side and ran the sessions as a team. On behalf of all the families you have ministered to over 15 years and the whole parish we thank you for your commitment and generosity. Thank you, also, to Frank and Julie Park who also have been part of the team for several years welcoming and providing supper. They are stepping down this month as well. We wish them well.

Understanding Blue Card Requirements within Parishes
Volunteers engaging with Children as part of their ministry are required by legislation to hold a valid Blue Card. Due to the complexity, all new volunteer engagement is to be managed through the parish office and not through individual ministries. All forms are to be collected from the parish office.
Blue Cards – Protection of Children/Minors Key prevention and monitoring system of people working with
children in QLD. Volunteering with children requires a valid Blue Card - this includes, but
not limited to Children’s Liturgy of the Word, Sacramental Program, Altar Server training, Sacristans, Youth Group Coordinators, Choir leaders etc.
Volunteers are to ONLY use Archdiocesan provided Blue Card forms. Blue cards from another organisation, needs to be linked to the parish.
Teachers (Registered)/Police under the legislation, are required to apply for an Exemption card to engage in a Ministry involving children.
PROJECT COMPASSION
For Martina, a mother of eight in Timor-Leste, escaping domestic violence was the first step in her journey to a new life. But at first, her future seemed very
uncertain.
The shelter where Martina sought refuge, Uma PAS, offered her many ways to transcend these challenges. Uma PAS is a partner in Caritas Australia’s Protection Program, a holistic community-wide program in Timor-Leste that offers women like Martina economic empowerment and a life of safety in a supportive
community.
Through the program, she was linked with a network of support services, and this enabled her to undertake livelihood training and start a small business to support her children. The program also linked her with a
supportive community.
“Martina is a person who did not want to give up, but wanted to be able to support her family,” her counsellor at the shelter says. Through the Protection Program, Martina says, “I have learnt how to change my life to
support myself, and my children.”

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT/A - 12 March 2017 ♫ PROCESSIONAL: TRANSFORM US
1. Transform us as you, transfigured, stood apart on Tabor’s height.
Lead us up our sacred mountains, search us with revealing light.
Lift us from where we have fallen, full of questions, filled with
fright.
2. Transform us as you, transfigured, once spoke with those holy
ones. We, surrounded by the witness of those saints whose work
is done, live in this world as your Body, chosen daughters chosen
sons.
3. Transform us as you, transfigured, would not stay within a
shrine. Keep us from our great temptation - time and truth we
quickly bind, lead us down those daily pathways where our love is
not confined. © Word of Life Int. Proulx R/Dunstan GIA Licence 1326
