NEWSLETTER 24/25 February 2018
SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT/B READINGS: Genesis 22:1-2, 9-13, 15-18; Romans 8:31-34
GOSPEL: Mark 9:2-10
Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish
Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.
CICCA: Children’s Sacraments Parents of all children 7 years and older, are invited to register them for the Sacrament program. Step 1: Contact the parish office 3849 7158 and register your child
who will receive a Mass card. Step 2: Come along with your child to any of the weekend parish Masses to enable
your child to learn the ropes, feel confident in the church, participate in the liturgy as he/she is ready and begins to feel at home.
Step 3: As Fr Pat gets to know you and your child he will write and invite you to take the next step.
Step 4: Children are then enrolled in the Sacrament Program and will attend family centred activity sessions to prepare for the celebration of Confirmation and First Communion. Registration to reception of the Sacraments usually takes approximately 6 months. It is tailored individually for families and children.
There are many children from approximately 14 different schools in our parish who are involved in our Parish Sacramental Journey. If any children are not yet baptised for any reason, please contact the parish office to speak to us. Both Fr Pat and I are happy to talk to you about the process and assist you in any way. May God’s Spirit guide and direct us on our journey. Trish Stapleton
In The Laws of Our Fathers, Scott Turow has one of his characters, Seth Weissman, preach at a memorial service:
‘ … I have regarded for some years now the story of Abraham and Isaac a strange story, a grim tale of how a father would sacrifice his son to his own faith … What kind of a starting point is this for … all the Western faiths? … Why do we re-tell this story? Is it to remind us that every parent since has been better?’
‘ … One of the thousand morals of the story of Abraham and Isaac is that … it is also a tale of survival and of mercy. In the end Abraham heard his God instruct him not to set his hand against his son … Isaac survived … He became a parent, blind to Jacob’s defects, but one who, pointedly, attempted no sacrifices of his own … ’
‘So let us think of Isaac … the first son of the Western faiths – and think about the story that is told again and again. We hear it first as children, and repeat it throughout our lives. We tell it by way of apology. And warning. We tell it with some measure of hope. We tell it because we have all been the child, we have all been Isaac, and we know the part of the story that is never mentioned. For the Bible does not record Isaac’s responses. We do not know if he, like Jesus, asked, “Father, why have you forsaken me?” We do not know if he begged the way most of us would, for his life. We know only this: that he obeyed … That because he knew nothing else, he did as his father required. We know he allowed himself to be bound in rope. We know that he let his father lay him on the altar of pyramided firewood which together they had raised to God. We know he watched his father on the mountaintop raise the gleaming knife above his breastbone. We know … he was a child, the son of a man with a Big Idea, who in his longing and confusion, even in his final instant, could only look to his father with that eternal if foundering hope for love.’
May this story and our Eucharist give us hope that no matter what altar of sacrifice we feel sometimes laid upon, God does not abandon us in our need, and never wants us to sacrifice ourselves, or anyone else. Lent is about mercy and survival because true obedience to God, even in its demands for a hard love, ALWAYS leads to life. © Richard Leonard SJ LiturgyHelp.com

Rattanak is a skilled young barber, living an independent life in rural Cambodia. But it wasn’t always that way. As a child he contracted polio and also became deaf. Like many people who are deaf or hard of hearing, Rattanak faced isolation at home, with a lack of opportunity to escape poverty. His sister discovered the Deaf Development Program (DDP), run by Caritas Australia partner, Maryknoll Cambodia. It provides sign language, job training and interpreting services to people aged 16 and over who are deaf or hard of hearing and aims to raise awareness about deafness in the hearing community. So far, it’s helped over 430 deaf or hard of hearing people with their education and more than 200 people to find jobs. It has also trained more than 300 people without deafness as sign language interpreters. Rattanak graduated from its education program in 2010, returning the following year to train as a barber. The DDP then helped him to set up his shop in his parent’s house in the village. Having emerged from his isolated world at home, Rattanak is now running a successful business, supporting himself and his wife...and now a baby.
Congratulations!

2nd SUNDAY OF LENT/B - 25 February 2018 ♫ PROCESSIONAL: TRANSFORM US
1. Transform us as you, transfigured, stood apart on Tabor’s height.
Lead us up our sacred mountains, search us with revealing light.
Lift us from where we have fallen, full of questions, filled with
fright.
2. Transform us as you, transfigured, once spoke with those holy ones.
We, surrounded by the witness of those saints whose work is done,
live in this world as your Body, chosen daughters chosen sons.
3. Transform us as you, transfigured, would not stay within a
shrine. Keep us from our great temptation - time and truth we
quickly bind, lead us down those daily pathways where our love is
not confined. Text: Dunstan D © 1993 GIA Pub. Tune: Picardy harmony Proulx, Richard © 1896 GIA Pub
