P~2,Vol.6

This time twelve months ago I waSwriting myfirst article as Community Lay Director forthis newsletter. And nowI am writing my lastone. I cannot believe that a year has alreadygone by. I knew that this time would go byquickly but I never thought it would go by soterribly fast. I wish I could slowit down because serving as theFrederi cksburg EmmausCommunity's Community LayDirector -has been about thegreatest and most humblinghonor I have ever experienced.I chose Paul's words from thetwelfth chapter of Hebrewsbecause I have been surroundedby such a cloud of faithfulwitnesses ever since my walk toEmmaus. This whole communityis the living, breathingembodiment of that cloud ofwitnesses Paul talked about. Thispast year I have especially felt thesurrounding love, grace and forgiveness fromeach of you as you have allowed me to serve inthis position.I was blessed to serve on a board thatepitomized incredible grace and love in all ofits deliberations. They also were veryforgiving of a community lay director whomade many mistakes.

June 2004-

Hebrews 12:1

And as much as I thought I already loved thiscommunity, this past year I have developed aneven more profound appreciation anddevotedness for you. If there was a need inthe community, all I had to do was ask and oneof you would step forward and fill the need for

no other reason but to beresponsive to a need. I have beenparticularly touched and blessedby seeing how you use the giftsGod has given you to reach out totouch a lost and hurting world, whether it be through teaming, orwith Chrysalis, or Kairos, orEpiphany, or so manyother ways Ihave seen you reach to bringhealing and hope anywhere youare. And I especially have beentouched by your generosity ofspirit, your prayerful words ofencouragement, and your constantlove which you have showered on

me this past year.

Many of you have asked at different times·what can I do?" Well the community alway~needs your prayers and your support by beingat Gatherings and the like. But now there aretwo unique opportunities to participate in theCommunity.

Angel Fulkerson is stepping down as theCommunity Baker. She has prepared thebread that we have broken for communion atthe various Candlelights, Sponsors' Hours, andClosings for the last several years. Also, Joeand Tina Cooper are stepping down as theFourth Day Package Coordinators which theyalso have done for several years. I want toextend to them a heartfelt thank you from theCommunity for all they have done. I know youalso will want to extend your own thanks tothem when you see them.

And now there are these two opportunitiesthat I want to extend to you to think-about apray about considering. I know that Angel orJoe or Tina would be more than helpful in thetransition. Maybe two or three of you wouldlike to take on one of these opportunities as ateam sharing the joy as well as theresponsibilities.

If you feel that God has put it on your heartto help please feel free to call me at home orat work (540-752-2874 H) (540-653-2632W).

June 2004P~6.Yol.6

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,

I stood in the doorway of the regional jetgreeting passengers as they reached thetop of the stairs, when a familiar smilingface appeared. I returned the smile andsaid, "Hello, I haven't seen you for awhile!"

ASI waited for the turbulence to subside, the familiar face and memories of myfirstday as a flight attendant returned to mind.

Entering the crew room at DullesInternational Airport, I placed mysuitcaseand flight bag amid what seemed likedendless luggage stacked on shelves andabandoned in the hallways. I made my waythrough socializing crews and file cabinetsuntil I reached a room filled withcomputers. I stood at the doorway innervousness and fear as I surveyed theroom. I could see pilots checking thecomputerized weather maps as panic setin. "Yikes! I know what I need to do, buthow? I need help! Who can I ask?Everyone will know I am new!" I feltembarrassed!

She replied, "I know," and continuedwalkingdown the aisle to her assigned seatnear the back of the passengercompartment. Other passengers continuedto walk by and soon the boarding processwas complete.

I performed my regular duties includingannouncements, exit row briefings, handedthe paperwork to the ramp agent, andclosed the main cabin door. Idemonstrated the airplane'S safetyfeatures, checked for seat beltcompliance, and secured myself inthe jumpseat located in the front of the plane. Ithen called the cockpit and notified thecaptain that the plane was ready fortakeoff.

I needed to check in. I moved hesitantlyto one of the monitors and attempted the

process. I typed in myemployee number andpassword. Up popped a newwindow, but I did not have aclue as to what to do next.Sitting there feeling lost, Ifrantically searched for mynext step. Suddenly, anotherflight attendant approachedme and asked, IIWhat doesthe airport code MHT standfor?"

A typical windy day leaving Chicagokept me in the jump seat a littlelonger due to the turbulence itcaused. Being the last flight of thenight, my mind drifted to my longovernight in Nashville. It was alonger that usual lay over, allowingme to remain in the hotel suite untillate afternoon. I could catch up onsome much needed reading andsleep.

Page 7: Upper Room Emmaus 2004-06.pdfUpper Room Emmaus of the Greater Frederick6bur~ Area NEW BOARD MEMBERS ELECTED ·VGt.:i).. ~ ive new Emmaus board members were elected at the May meeting.

P~7.Vo/.6 June 2004

Having just completed training, city codesfor airports were fresh in my mind. Iquickly replied, "Oh, that's Manchester,New Hampshire!" I wondered why aseasoned flight attendant wouldn't knowthis basic information. What kind of loserwas she? I was returned to reality as Ilooked back at the computer monitor thathad me completely baffled.

Noticing my predicament, she sWiftlyoffered her assistance. In a non-judgmental and non-threatening manner, she helped me grasp the basic skills Ineeded to successfully check in and printout my schedule.

Isn't it amazing how God sent help evenwhen I felt like I knew it all? I wasjudging someone else, while I wasscrambling myself. I was too proud to askfor the help I needed.

In 1 Corinthians 4: 4-5, Paul wrote: tilt isthe Lord who judges me. Therefore judgenothing before the appointed time; waituntil the Lord comes. He will bring to lightwhat is hidden in darkness and will exposethe motives of men's hearts. At that timeeach will receive his praise from God."

I am learning that God presents me withneeds and opportunities that challenge meeveryday. He places people and situationsin my life not only to help me, but for meto be ready to help. There's no time for meto judge.

I need to accept the help He sends me asgraciously as it is given to me. I must alsolearn to give help, expecting nothing inreturn.

I made my way down the aisle servingbeverages and snacks to all of thepassengers. There she sat with herboyfriend beside her as I stopped to chatfor awhile. Realizing her boyfriend feltleft out of the conversation, sheintroduced the two of us. She shared ourcomputer room story, and we laughedtogether as we secured our seat belts forflight arrival.

, ~ In thinking back, I---e~realize that an angel~~1", I with wings appeared

'\ to me that day I buther wings were onlythree inches wide

and were pinned on a flight attendant'suniform. May you be aware of theministering angels that God sends to you.

Your brother in Christ,Dennis Perkins
