Guided Club Trips

GUIDED CLUB TRIPS – SPRING

Through Alpine Recreation, and hopefully other guiding companies, we will be organising some more professionally guided trips. As of “just now”, we are planning on 3 trips similar to the ones run in the last couple of months. But we hope to add a few more too.

The 3 trips we are planning are:-

• Labour weekend 4 day ski-mountaineering Caroline Hut

• Labour weekend 4 day ski-touring Tasman Glacier

• 3rd weekend in November (tentative date, might be the 4th weekend) 4 day climbing Caroline Hut

You can see details of all the trips here. Note that I’ll be updating the files in this folder over the next week as a few details are thrashed out. But nothing dramatic will change so take a look and Email me if you’re interested!

Basic Snowcraft Course 2 28 - 30 August

Ten keen students, three instructors, and myself as lodgemaster assembled at the Arthur’s Pass Lodge on Friday night in miserable NW conditions, however the weather was forecast to clear in the east from Saturday morning so plans were made for a busy weekend. Introductions were made over dinner, followed by sessions on weather, trip planning, navigation, and gear. Saturday morning dawned, and our instruction team of Rob, Gilda, and Laura was bolstered by the arrival of Kate and Gideon. It was hardly an alpine start, as we waited for the weather to clear before the crew headed to Broken River Ski area for the days instruction, returning to

the lodge late afternoon after a fine but windy day in soft snow. Sessions on weather, avalanches, first aid, and hygiene in the mountains that evening along with some socialising over a fanta or two! Next day after a clean up we all headed to Mt Cheeseman for the day, practicing techniques learnt the day before along with an avalanche transceiver search. Conditions were far from ideal for cramponing but they were donned for the walk back down to the car-park. A big thank you to the instruction crew of Kate Woolley (lead), Rob Gallagher, Laura Wolken, Gilda Otway; along with a guest appearance of NZAC Technical Advisor Gideon Geerling.

Intermediate Snowcraft Course 11 - 13 September

Phew! I got through the challenge of coordinating my first course, only to arrive home and realise the next one was only a fortnight away. I also arrived home to the news that one of the instructors could no longer make it due to injury. A bit of scurrying around to find a replacement instructor with the appropriate qualifications ensued. A huge thank you to Asher March - lead instructor, who managed to secure the services of Bia Boucinhas at short notice. The crew of 7 students plus Asher and Bia assembled at the Temple Basin goods lift on Friday evening and by all accounts a good and instructive weekend was had by all. Thanks to Temple Basin for hosting us. A great venue for this course. Also another huge vote of thanks for our volunteer instructors Asher & Bia.

Basic Snowcraft 2 Follow up trip Hamilton Peak 12 September

Five students along with Laura, Rob and myself gathered in the early morning at the Yaldy pub carpark where gear and cars were sorted, first stop Sheffield pie shop, coffee for most pies for some then off to the start of Camp Saddle track picking up Gilda at Castle Hill Village on the way. We climbed up to Camp Saddle then followed the ridge line in mixed soft snow and rock towards Hamilton Peak, the snow was hard enough to require crampons for the last 100m or so to the summit. We traversed the ridge towards Nervous knob before dropping down a steepish chute into Alans Basin and back to the cars. Glorious weather and a great opportunity to practice the skills learnt a fortnight before. Again thanks to Gilda, Rob & Laura for volunteering their time.

Earlier in the year, the Canterbury/Westland section advertised a ski mountaineering trip, run by Alpine Recreation and based out of Caroline Hut, for four days in mid-August. However, 2020 had other plans, and due to less snow and more Covid-19 than expected, this morphed into a ski touring trip based out of Tasman Saddle Hut, in mid-September.

We made our way to Alpine Recreation’s Edelweiss Lodge in Lake Tekapo on a Thursday evening to meet our guide, Tim Steward, and to go through our gear. A decent storm was still passing through, hopefully dumping a load of snow up high, but this was forecast to clear in the early hours of Friday morning. Sure enough it did, and we were afforded spectacular views of Kirikirikatata/Mount Cook Range and the Malte Brun Range as we flew up the valley to land at Tasman Saddle Hut.

After digging out the door to the hut and dropping off our food and overnight gear, it was time for first tracks. We spied a group up at Kelman Hut touring the slopes of Mt Abel, but otherwise we had the glacier to ourselves. The storm had laid down a blanket of perfect powder, at points deep and fluffy enough to swallow an avalanche probe under it’s own weight. Cruising down from the hut was effortless. We weren’t sure how the trip was going to get any better, but then Tim took us on a couple of runs through the crevasses known as ‘Canyonlands’, before a final run down yet more amazing powder. Returning to the hut, we found we still had it to ourselves.

Saturday dawned bright and sunny, and our objective for the day was Hochstetter Dome. From early on choppers of heli-skiers were buzzing up and down, and the glacier suddenly seemed very busy. Hugh lead the charge touring up the shoulder towards the lower of Hochstetter Dome’s two summits. As conditions firmed up, we stashed our ski gear and cramponed up the final few hundred metres to be greeted with majestic views down the Whymper Glacier and out to the West Coast. Returning to our skis, there were even more people out and about on Haupapa/Tasman Glacier, but for some reason they were all skiing down each other’s tracks, leaving plenty of virgin powder for us to carve up. For the next two nights, Tasman Saddle Hut was full to the brim, but somehow there were no snorers present.

Sunday’s first run was down a slope between two crevassed sections, easily visible from the hut and just slightly to the west. While most of the snow was soft friendly powder, the section in the middle was not only

Tasman Saddleski touring

steeper than we anticipated, but also heavier and hard work. We were pleased to be aiming for a northerly aspect for the rest of the day, and transitioned to skin up into the Darwin Bowls. At a small col on the west ridge of Mt Darwin, we were afforded amazing views over the Darwin and Bonney Glaciers, with Malte Brun providing an impressive backdrop, while Haupapa stretched off towards Aoraki in the distance. The snow coverage on the Darwin Glacier moraines created an enticing terrain park which Tim suggested we explore on Monday, as a side trip from our final ski out along the Tasman Glacier. The sun had by now loosened the snow in Darwin Bowls to give excellent corn skiing back down to the main valley. Touring all the way up to Tasman Saddle itself, Tim, Hugh, and I detoured to have a quick run next to the crevasses at the foot of the rocky outcrop upon which the hut is perched. While most of this snow was still in the shade and somewhat powdery, a hidden hole near the bottom provided some unexpected excitement for Hugh.

After catching up with Paul and Charles at the saddle and admiring the views down the Murchison Glacier, we continued touring up to the Main Divide, west of Mt Aylmer. The West Coast was blanketed in cloud, punctured by Broderick Peak and Mt Mannering to the northeast. Our final run of the day took us right to the hut door and a celebratory whisky.

Monday arrived and it was time to leave the mountains. We had arranged an afternoon chopper pickup from De La Beche Corner, about 10km down the glacier. We stashed our overnight gear under a boulder at the bottom of the Darwin, and toured up the route we had scouted out the previous day. Further up the Bonney Glacier, a trio of kea arrived and followed us for a while, hopping along our skin tracks. It was great to have them with us, least of all because it meant that they weren’t further down the glacier pecking at our overnight gear. We said goodbye to the kea as the glacier leveled off below Mt Hamilton, and switched back to downhill mode for yet more sensational corn skiing. Further down the Darwin, we weaved over and around the moraines in scenes reminiscent of the skiing moon robot from Wallace and Gromit.

We again saddled up with our overnight gear, and set off down the final stretch of Haupapa to our rendezvous. This final section was wide and gentle, with the skiing requiring little concentration, allowing us to focus on more important things like taking the final few photos of the white world around us. As the snow gave way to ruckles of blue ice, we called it a day and gathered our gear together to await the chopper, with just enough time to kill for a bit of ice-bouldering.

MOUNT OXFORD TRIP REPORT written by Carys John photos Jen Ormsbee "With a rare leisurely start, the group of six set out from Christchurch towards Mt Oxford.

We crossed Coopers Creek and started along the farmland before beginning the steady ascent up through pockets of beech forest and tussocks. Even here we felt the strong winds, and were grateful not to have attempted the original plan of Avalanche Bealey Traverse (especially with the precipitation forecast for the ridgeline too).

Towards the summit, we were met with a small coating of snow, and we all enjoyed the juxtaposing views of the Canterbury Plains and the Alps. After taking some quick photos after our 1000m ascent, we headed down into the shelter of the trees for a lunch break.

On our way down, we detoured to see the Ryde falls before appreciating the views of the route taken as we reached the day's end.

Although it wasn't the original traverse planned, it was a great chance to meet some fellow female adventurers, and to make some plans for future mountain trips."

Book reviewOur library has some great books, but it’s hard to appreciate that when the only access people have is via an Online Excel worksheet. I’m planning on doing something about that, but in the meantime I thought I’d let members know a bit more about our books by doing book reviews. Ideally monthly, but don’t hold me to that. John Roper-Lindsay This is an auto-biography, which leads up to Venables’ most famous achievement, namely the first oxygen-less ascent of the Kanshung face of Everest. He’s a good writer, and it’s a really interesting story even outside the epic efforts in the mountains. His background is interesting, coming from that privileged, private-school educated upbringing that provided so many British climbers up until the 1980s. From mid-way through his time at Oxford University Venables’ main interest and goals in life revolved around climbing, and his existence for many years was similar to many British climbers of that time, living absolutely on the breadline, hitch-hiking and starving his way to the Alps, with occasional visits back to the complete

contrast of a lovely childhood home or on family ski-trips.

But of course it’s the trips to the mountains that really hold the interest, and there are a lot of them, and all very gripping, for one reason or another. From his first Chamonix-based summer camping trip with mostly other Oxford University friends, which left 4 dead in two separate accidents, to numerous trips to unclimbed areas in the Himalaya, you are left with a feeling of awe at the difficulty and scope of the climbing, not to mention the problems caused by doing it with almost no money!

Venables is obviously a very ambitious, driven climber and he’s honest about occasions where he has behaved badly to other team members due to impatience or lack of tolerance, which makes everything seem very real. And of course the last adventure on the Kanshung face is a complete epic from start to frostbitten finish.

CLIMBING ON PRIVATE LAND: DID YOU KNOW?

If you are intending to climb outdoors and the crag is on private land YOU MUST always ring the landowner first to state your intentions and get permission to do so.

It is continually bought to our attention that a lot of climbers are not doing this and this is putting our outdoor climbing in jeopardy.

A huge amount of work with significant investment is done at crags on private land on behalf of the climbing community by a small group of route developers. It is very annoying for us to have people behaving irresponsibly like this, when the website includes multiple warnings about the requirement for permission.

Apart from the hardware, we have spent a huge amount of time in cutting tracks and clearing gorse from climbs, with a relatively small amount of time actually spent climbing. In addition we have collaborated with farmers over wilding pine control, both at the climbing areas and elsewhere on the farms.

If people can’t comply with the permission requirements we will have to propose more draconian requirements to force compliance, which may result in some individuals being trespassed from the private land.

It is not hard to find the numbers for the landowners, these are all listed on https://climbnz.org.nz/

Plan your climbing ahead but if you cannot reach the landowner then DO NOT take that to mean you can climb there, go climb at another crag. The landowners do not mind you calling, they are very approachable but if this continues to happen the whole climbing community will lose out.

REQUEST FOR NEWS AND INFO

SECTION GEAR HIRE UPDATE

We (Nick Shearer and Neil Sloan) are working on a new edition of the Mount Aspiring Region guidebook. This new edition will be expanded to include guides to the Forbes Ranges.

The four major blocks of peaks we aim to comprehensively cover are: 1. Humboldt Mountains – Barrier Range – Snowdrift Range - Bryneira Range - Waipara Range – Dart Glacier Peaks. 2. Forbes Mountains – Richardson Mountains – Rees Valley head. 3. Matukituki Valley Peaks 4. Wilkin / Siberia peaks and peaks around to Haast Pass.

If you have been in these areas and can provide updated information, we want to hear from you. If there are climbers out there looking for a challenge and wanting to explore less-visited alpine areas on a fact-finding mission, we can help by providing a list of peaks that need revisiting.

Some of the things we are looking for include:

• High-resolution colour photographs • Information such as errors and omissions in the current (2016) edition • Suggestions for improvements to the current edition • Changes to existing routes, access and huts • New routes

axes, crampons, packs, snow shoes and tents.

PLEASE NOTE:Camp n tramp hire will be closing their business soon and only have ice axes and crampons available to hire and all other equipment will be sold off.

For Bivouac and Further Faster - please check their websites out for full hire details and rules of hire and for Camp n Tramp hire, please email Ross on [email protected]

Please email Clayton on [email protected] for any further questions.

Thanks, Clayton.

For the 2020 winter season, the C/W section gear hire will only be available to those members participating on section run courses.

Our gear custodian has stepped down and all current C/W section gear is currently in storage until the committee can decide on a better system for gear hire in the future (we had multiple issues with gear hire last season and are currently missing a complete avalanche kit and one ice axe)

The following retailers can hire gear out:

Bivouac Tower Junction - Avalanche kits, ice axes, crampons and packs.

Further Faster - Avalanche kits, ice

WEEKLY ACTIVITY OPTIONS

Lead a Trip: If you would like to lead a trip for the club, alpine, rock climbing, cycling or otherwise, please contact [email protected]

Midweek mountaineering: The midweek group are mainly fairly mature mountaineers who still manage to plod up a few peaks, usually on Wednesdays, weather permitting. Most of the trips are nottechnical climbing but scrambling at a fairly relaxed pace. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Pat Prendergast on 337 0079 or email [email protected]

Mid Week Rock Climbing: A new and exciting format from September (day light savings start) onwards. Instead of one set evening each week, we are hoping to be able to offer people a choice of two nights each week, which will vary depending on who is looking after the group. We believe this will give people of all abilities more opportunities to get out climbing. A few things to note when rock climbing with the mid week group;

• Helmets are compulsory when climbing and belaying (if you don’t have a helmet, please source one or talk to the climbing co ordinator and they will try and have one available)

• For those new to climbing and belaying, we can assist in this so please ask if you are not sure

• Two top rope kits (each with a rope, biners and slings) are available each week for the person in charge to use rather than their own equipment and for those climbers who don’t want to lead but top rope instead.

Climbing will usually run from approximately 4.30 pm onwards, outdoors during daylight savings hours, or indoors in winter, or if the weather is no good. We also welcome and would appreciate people assisting from time to time on a roster basis rather than relying on the same people every week having to look after the climbing group so please contact Clayton if you are able to help out (it’s not too difficult!)

If you would like to attend and are on the google climbing group already, we will email out at the start of the week with which nights we are running climbing and who is in charge and their contact details. If you would like to be on the group list, please email Clayton on: [email protected] or text on 027 4461562 All welcome, including non members.

The NZAC Canterbury/Westland section is looking for volunteer trip leaders

A club trip is a great way to spend time with like minded people, share some adventures and give back to the outdoor community. Most trips involve moderate to intermediate mountaineering but they can include anything from tramping, rock climbing to mountaineering objectives. The trip leader is not a professional guide or instructor, as a trip leader you organise and lead the group only.

What is involved?

• Pick an objective and date

• Use this trip leader worksheet to plan your trip https://alpineclub.org.nz/resources/organising-trips/

• Get in contact with the trip coordinator (see details below). Your trip needs to be signed off to make sure all points are ticked off. The trip coordinator can also help you with any questions you have regarding the planning

The trip gets advertised in the newsletter and/or to the Cant/Westland facebook page Email: Shannon at [email protected]

• You organise the participants and do pre–trip preparationsThis list is a suggestion of day or overnight trips which could be both run during summer or winter. All these trips are achievable in a weekend. If you have another objective in mind just get in contact with the trip coordinator. Thanks for leading a trip for the club!

TRIP GUIDELINES

Responsibilities of a Trip Organiser:

• Trips should be fun for everyone. Choose a mountain, peak, hill, traverse, route, crag, or whatever and get out there and meet some keen club members!

• You cannot be responsible for the safety of every member of the group, but you should aim to empower every group member with enough knowledge to make their own informed decisions about the proposed trip both before, and during the trip.

• Choose a realistic goal for the time available and give prospective group members an idea of the amount of effort required.

• Set a group size limit based on your experience, the goal, time available and the groups individual fitness and experience.

• Let the group know what skills & equipment are needed when they sign up.

• Provide the trip Participants with a copy of the NZAC waiver form and have them understand, sign and return it to you in advance of the trip.

• Organise travel arrangements at the earliest opportunity and let everyone know how much they can expect to pay for transport costs - petrol, wear & tear.

• Prepare detailed trip intentions and leave them with at least one responsible individual.

• If someone on the trip voices their concern about a situation it is up to you (with the help of the group) to find a safe solution.

• Give priority to NZAC members

• Find someone on the trip to write an interesting trip report for the Section Newsletter and email it to: [email protected]

Responsibilities of a Trip Participant:

• You are responsible for your own safety. If you are uncomfortable with any situation, let your trip organiser know straight away.

• Be prepared to drive or contribute to transport costs incurred (petrol, wear & tear)

• Make sure you have a clear idea of the trip’s goals and what will be required of you. Obtain a relevant map and know where you are going, the terrain, what gear you will need, and how to use it.

• If you discover that you cannot go on the trip then let the Trip organiser know as soon as possible so that another person can take your place.

• Read, understand and return the signed copy of the NZAC waiver form to the Trip Organiser.

An important part of the NZAC is volunteer organised trips. If you’re thinking of joining or organising a trip, here are some guidelines on what to expect. Check out the NZAC Trips page for resources to assist you with planning a section trip. https://alpineclub.org.nz/resources/organising-trips/
