SINCE WE LAST REPORTED on the story of the five

new telecommunications towers to be built on the

Island, things have been moving forward. Bell Mobility’s

plans have been approved by the Island municipalities

and construction has already begun.

Continued on page 2

Up She Rises!

Towers are going up in Hilton Beach, atop the South Street hill, on the C Line near

Sailor’s Encampment and another near the 20th Side Road and the F&G Line inter-

section. The remaining two are located in Jocelyn township on the 5th Side Road

near Jocelyn Drive and on the P Line and A Line junction near Otter Lake.

So far, the sites have been cleared and graded, foundation concrete has been poured

and the initial wiring has been installed.

Now, the towers themselves are going up,

eventually to reach 61 metres high. It’s

not yet confirmed whether all construc-

tion is planned to continue over the

winter.

to see what’s new!

Although our winter weather will no

doubt have an effect on progress, Bell

Mobility officials are confident that

all construction will be completed on

schedule for the towers to go “live” by

next summer, and possibly as early as

the Spring.

We watched in awe as the veteran construction crew (with full safetygear of course) seemingly effortlessly climbed, moved all about andleaned both in and out, at already-dizzying heights, getting things readyfor the next section to be lifted.

Still Another New Email Fraud!IF YOU THOUGHT that the Christmas season had alreadybrought all of the fraudsters, ‘phishers’ and other creeps outfrom under their rocks, we’re afraid not!

Just before Christmas, the Island Clippings received an ‘offi-cial’ email from “Googlemail” as follows:

“Hi,

Your incoming mails were placed on pending status due tothe recent upgrade to our database.

In order to receive these messages Click Here to re-login andwait for responds from Googlemail. We apologies for any in-convenience and appreciate your understanding”

We were certainly surprised to learn that ‘Google’ had sud-denly re-located to the Cayman Islands and were hiring peo-ple who can barely write in English, to communicate withtheir customers. We must have missed that announcement!

Once again we warn that, if you receive such an email,DON’T DO IT! Don’t click on the link and don’t reply tothem. Give the message what it deserves and delete it rightaway.

Teresa Parker’s Magic Cake4 eggs (separate yolks from whites) at room temperature

1 tsp. vanilla extract

3/4 cup sugar

1 stick butter, melted

4 oz or 3/4 cup of all purpose flour

2 cups milk lukewarm

powdered sugar for dusting cake

1. Preheat oven to 325 F degrees. Grease a 8 inch x 8 inch bak-ing dish.

2. Separate eggs and add the egg whites to a mixer and mixuntil egg whites are stiff. Place egg whites in a bowl and setaside.

3. Beat the egg yolks with the sugar until light. Add butter andvanilla extract and continue beating for another minute ortwo after which you can add the flour and mix it in until fullyincorporated.

4. Slowly start adding the milk and beat until everything iswell mixed together. Add the egg whites, a third at a time andgently fold them in using a spatula, repeat until all egg whitesare folded in. Another variation to folding in the egg whiteswould be to add a third of the egg whites and gently whiskthem in to the cake batter, then reverse the process and add abit of the cake mixture to the egg whites and gently whisk in,repeat until all cake batter has been whisked in.

5. Pour batter into baking dish and bake for 40 to 70 minutesor until the top is lightly golden. The baking time could varygreatly depending on the oven, so take a peek at around 40minutes and see how it looks.

6. Sprinkle some powdered sugar after cake has cooled.

Serve it chilled with berries ... The center of the cake is actu-ally a custard.

Yum, Thanks Teresa!

Another Fire on the IslandTOWNSHIP OF ST. JOSEPH FIREFIGHTERS were called tothe north end of the Island on Monday night to deal with afire in a detached garage. St. Joe Fire Chief Fraser Adams re-ports that the fire was not detected until the garage was par-tially collapsed and completely involved. As a result it was acomplete loss. Several pieces of equipment were destroyedincluding a tractor and various implements. Another small, nearby building was also damaged by the heat. The cause isstill under investigation but is not considered suspicious.

As of our press time, no new information is available yetfrom OPP and Ontario Fire Marshall officials about their in-vestigation into last week’s deadly fire on the X Line.

Please remember to dial 9-1-1 in case of fire or other emer-gencies. We’ve learned that, over the past few years, therehave been several calls that reach the island fire departmentssecond or third hand. Instead of dialing 9-1-1, people arecalling a friend, or someone they know who is a member ofthe fire department. Perhaps the caller doesn’t wish to riskembarrassment, but it causes confusion and delays – andthose extra few minutes can make a world of difference in re-sponse times.

SAHCreates Innovation FundGOT ANY BRIGHT IDEAS FOR HEALTHCARE?

Perhaps the years of belt-tightening and streamlining are pay-ing off as the Sault Area Hospital (SAH) announced Mondaythat it had generated a surplus of $1.3 million over its fiscal2012/2013 budget. Actually, the total surplus was closer to$2.8 million. About $1.5 million of that went toward payingdown the hospital’s long-term debt, leaving the net surplus of$1.3 million.

That money will be reinvested back into the hospital’s pro-grams, services and people. Following discussions with theSAH Board of Directors, it was decided that the surpluswould be best reinvested in the form of an Innovation Fund.

“One of the Peer Review recommendations coming from our2010 Hospital Improvement Plan was that it wasn’t enough tobalance our budget but that it should be our goal to generateongoing surpluses to pay down long term debt.” said MarioPaluzzi, SAH’s Director of Communications and Public Af-fairs. “Last year, our Board made that a requirement movingforward and this will be the third year that we have been suc-cessful in doing so. As a matter of fact, we are forecasting asurplus greater than the $1.5 million and another Board reso-lution was that additional surpluses beyond the budgetedamounts should be reinvested in the hospital, our people andservices to our patients. The Innovation Fund is one suchmeans of allocating this additional surplus.”

The Fund is non-recurring and will support one-time expen-ditures. The objective of the SAH Innovation Fund is to sup-port Board-approved innovation opportunities, includingeducation and capital investment proposals that will continu-ously improve the quality of care and patient experience atSAH.

Any organization or individual in the Algoma District maysubmit a proposal/application to access the Innovation Fund.Proposals must also align with SAH’s Mission, Vision, iCcareValues and corporate hospital goals.

In order to determine a process for allocating these funds, anInnovation Fund Committee was developed in 2013. Consist-ing of hospital staff, physicians, volunteers and communitymembers, the group represents a cross-section of both thehospital community, as well as providing a perspective fromthe community at large. The Committee is fittingly chairedby TomVair, Executive Director of the Sault Ste. Marie Inno-vation Centre.

The deadline for submission of an initial proposal and appli-cation is January 20, 2014. The Innovation Fund Committeewill then review, evaluate, rank and prioritize all submissions.Applicants will be informed by the Committee if their initialsubmission is successful and if so, will be asked to provide a

“Ice Bridge” to Open Soon

DRUMMOND ISLAND,MI — U.S. Customs & Border Pro-tection, Office of Field Operations reports that conditionsare good for the time of year when the “Ice Bridge” forms be-tween Canada and the United States.

The ice bridge was scheduled to be marked with signs andthe tree line on Saturday, January 11, 2014. [Publisher’s Note:Poor weather conditions forced this to be postponed] Once theice bridge is established, CBP will begin staffing the reportingstation on Friday, January 17, 2014. The opening and closureof this reporting station is subject to change contingent onweather and ice conditions.

“The ice bridge is a fun recreational link between the UnitedStates and Canada,” said Port Director Patrick Wilson. “Be-cause of the continued reduction in snowmobile activity atthe reporting station, the hours of operation will mirrorthose of the 2013 season.”

Travellers entering from Canada must report directly to thereporting station on Drummond Island during the estab-lished hours of 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

The number of days that the reporting station is open hasbeen reduced due to the low volume of people using the icebridge. The Drummond Island reporting station will beclosed this year Monday through Thursday.

The official CBP Reporting Station is located at the Drum-mond Island Yacht Haven Dock. Entering at any other loca-tion or outside of these hours is prohibited and violatorscould be assessed a $5,000 fine.
