    Feature Activationgolden rules

    Cells must be manually locked and unlocked otherwise the change will not take completely effect.

    The drawback would be that the UEs keep performing URA update continuously because the URA Update message doesn't reach the RNC and so the UE keeps performing updates.

    Prepare a script to perform the activation and the change of parameter by cluster

    if the change of parameter is implemented in the whole RNC, all the UEs in the RNC make an URA update and generate a huge peak of signaling load.

    URA Update procedure

    A UE in state URA_PCH enters a new cell not belonging to the same URA that the UE is registered in.

    The UE enters a cell that has no URAs defined. This will trigger a release of the RRC Connection and the UE enters Idle mode.

    As part of a supervision mechanism, URA Update is performed periodically. The periodicity is controlled by the timer t305.

    Fast Dormancy consideration (1)

    The graph illustrates battery life improvement due to Fast Dormancy behaviour.

    General information of the test It compares two devices on a

    commercial UMTS network with a complete data exchange for a short ACK-based application receiving a regular message once every 17 minutes.

    This network did not support URA_PCH

    A proposal for the introduction of a Fast Dormancy feature has been presented to a 3GPP Rel7 meeting (Nov07); but could be implemented in this way in any release.

    Some UEs are disconnecting the PS call after a period of inactivity in connected mode (e.g. 3 sec)

    This is beneficial to reduce power battery consumption However, this mechanism overwrite the channel switching due to inactivity

    (HS->FACH, FACH->Idle inactivity timers) controlled by the RAN and itmakes ineffective to tune these parameters

    Questions: 1) What is the contribution of differernt UE type to the total number of

    PS call per hour? 2) Which UE types are possibly using Fast Dormancy as main

    mechanism to release the call?
