Why?Half the people in the world live in cities. By 2020 this figure will rise to 60 percent, when nearly two billion people will live in substandard housing and slums.

Many will lack proper access to clean water, sanitation, energy, affordable housing, healthcare, education, and nutritious food and will be without decent and productive work.

Yet, there are great opportunities for change. The challenges facing cities in developing countries make them fertile ground for new business models that can potentially impact the lives of billions.

How?Only by working together in partnerships, we can develop Smart Solutions for Slums. Solutions that introduce market-based principles for the needs of those living at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP).

Moreover, to achieve a positive, social impact we need business models that are environmentally sustainable, economically empowering, culturally embedded and financially profitable.

What?Urban Change Lab is an innovative concept for executive education co-created by the Nyenrode Business Universiteit, urban specialist AT Osborne and the socially driven organization Cordaid.

The program will teach and develop social business strategies based on shared value creation and inclusive innovation. It includes State-of-the-Art Masterclasses and a field trip to a fast-growing city in Africa, Asia or Latin America.

Through cross-sector collaboration and cross-cultural experience, we are striving to enrich and challenge future leaders.

FactsAt the moment some 50 percent of the people in the world live in cities. This will rise to 60 percent by 2020 and hit 70 percent by 2050. Today almost 900 million people already live in slums, without access to proper urban services, and this number too is set to rise dramatically.

Moreover, many slum dwellers are excluded from traditional business strategies, meaning that the people living at the economic BoP become trapped in poverty. But while their purchasing power is relatively low, by virtue of their sheer numbers, BoP markets around the world represent a combined value of about five trillion dollars in purchasing power.

OpportunitiesOverall, the second and third decades of the 21st Century will be an unprecedented moment in human history when the global population strongly moves up. By working together we can create opportunities for change and achieve resilient, sustainable and harmonious development (UN Habitat, 2012).

The specific challenges facing slum neighborhoods make them fertile ground for new concepts; by including slum dwellers as critical consumers, producers, (social) entrepreneurs and employees we have the potential to impact the lives of millions.

International development has become a multiparty challenge that is based on inclusive innovation and shared value creation.

NeedsWe need a collaborative approach and new business models, based on inclusive innovation and shared value creation towards a sustainable urban future.

Multiparty collaborationCordaid, AT Osborne and the Nyenrode Business Universiteit are all part of a partnership that intends to accelerate positive urban change. They co-create new business models with organizations from various sectors to make a difference. They boost collaborative learning and stimulate the transfer of knowledge between all parties involved.

Sustainable Business InnovationWe invite innovative organizations to be pioneers with us in making a difference in this field and to join us as founding fathers of an innovative concept of executive education: Urban Change Lab.

In co-creation with you, we will identify business opportunities and challenges and work together on an unique multiparty business development strategy for the urban future. Urban Change LabAn Urban Change Lab is an innovative management education program centered around urban (slum) development and sustainable business modeling. Over a period of 10 months a group of ‘high potentials’ from different business segments and organizations will be challenged to deliver innovative, multiparty, sustainable business plans for the BoP, with a view to creating Smart Solutions for Slums.

Main focus• To enrich and challenge ‘future leaders’• To build smart solutions for slums• To create transferable knowledge

Each Urban Change Lab will come up with a (conceptual) business plan. The ultimate goal is to engage both corporate partners and embed (local) partners to work on the actual implementation.

What will start as a management development and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative will become an international business development strategy.
