Copenhagen was originally a Viking fishing village founded in the 10th century. Later in the 1443, Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark. Marked with repetitive destruction and reconstruction since the 1700s, the city was presented the opportunity to develop its growth away from industrial planning and incorporate the human dimension of urban space.

COPENHAGEN1800

Copenhagen suffered great damage from ranged bombard ships and mortar attacks from the British in 1807, leaving the city devastated. In the 1850’s the open space allowed Copenhagen to rebuild. This was the first attempt to redefine the city, which was their first form of urban planning.

Five Finger Plan

Copenhagen was orientated in the Five Finger Plan, this was created by Steen Eiler in 1947. The idea is for connectivity and the central area are around the palm of the hand, while the urban area extends through the ngers. The gaps between the ngers are of green and agriculture. The further the nger extends outwards, the more isolated the area will be and away from the concentration of connectivity. Meanwhile most of the Copenhageners live out in the ngers

Around the early 90’s, the nger has grown out of proportions and this was unaccounted forby the city of Copenhagen. Each ngers started to grow further out of the central areas and further apart from each other. The city realized that they needed to alter their plan because it is starting to create urban sprawl and inefcient trafc congestions.

The Copenhagen Wheel

“In Copenhagen there is a coherent network of segregated lanes designated as cycle tracks in all city areas. That means you can ride from one part of the city to another almost without leaving the cycle track”

-Lindholm

Entering The Piazza11 narrow pathways lead into the piazza. The small narrow pathways are an example of negative space leading visitors into the positive space of the piazza itself. As a visitor enters the piazza their pace slows by the change in space and increased width of the sidewalk lining theoutside edge of the piazza.

Day and nightDuring the day activity is spread throughout the entire piazza, but once the natural light of the sun has left the space people tend to gather only to the edges. As the cafes lining the space provide a source of light visitors will feel safer rather than in the dark center of the piazza.

~Jan Gehl

Engaging The EdgeDue to numerous cafes, the outer edge of Piazza del Campo consists almost entirely of soft edges. These soft edges invite people to gather around the edge of the piazza.
