Urban Decay is an American cosmetics company
founded in 1996 by David Soward, Wende Zom-
nir, Patricia Holmes, and Sandy Lerner. There
was a significant dispute as to whether Sandy
Lerner wrongfully ousted her former friend and
horse trainer, Patricia Holmes, from a “founders
role” in the upstart brand. The brand is primarily
sold in mid to high-end beauty stores, such as
Ulta, Sephora, and recently Macy’s. Urban Decay
was bought by Moet-Hennessy Louis Vuitton
in 2000, before being sold again in 2002 to the
Falic Group. In 2009 it was acquired by Castanea
Partners, a private equity firm. The label is based
in Newport Beach, California, and has a distribu-
tion center in Hialeah, Florida.
Urban Decay claims not to employ animal
testing in the creation of its products, and marks
on its website which products are considered
vegan. It also offers 100% synthetic fiber makeup
brushes, including blush and powder brushes,
made from taklon as an alternative to typical
brushes constructed from animal hair. Every item
that is 100% vegan is denoted on the website by
a paw print, which means it is “Marley Approved”,
Marley being the dog of an Urban Decay exec-
utive. Additionally, they have received approval
by The Coalition for Consumer Information
on Cosmetics and PETA’s 5th Annual Best
Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Line award. However,
Urban Decay announced on June 6th, 2012 that
they will begin selling their products in China, a
country that is known to conduct animal testing
on products before releasing them to the public.
PETA subsequently removed Urban Decay from
their list of cruelty-free companies. As of July
6th, 2012, Urban Decay announced that it will
not be selling its products to China.

Urban Decay recently rebranded themselves to adapted more
unique and interesting shape. The average quality and average
price range also help to attract their target audience that uses
Urban Decay’s products. However, graphic inconsistencies con-
fuse the audenice and makes the brand harder to recognized.
Their current form of packaging is very unique compared to
other cosmetic lines. Interesting forms help the audience to try
their product, but audeinces are mainly driven by the quality of
cosmetics. Using plastic to pretend a to be different material is
not working for them and it makes worse the presentation even
though the product is better than before.

Sephora is one of the best place to research the
cosmetic industry.
Most companies have their own gondola to
showcase their product along some information.
Various kinds of products that overlap with each
other. They are mainly black color oriented.
However, some companies try to get away from
the pattern by using illustrative packaging or
using vivid color. Benefit and Sephora are good
example for this.
Most young audiences tend to go toward
luxury products like Dior to test it out. Then they
move to Urban Decay or Smashbox gondola
for final purchase. Middle aged group goes to
anti-aging products like Clinique to try and
purchase for their own use.
Overall, Sephora is the battle ground for cosmet-
ics and most of them ado not stand at in terms
of packaging and environment due to their color
sheme. Matching visuals make the product
harder to recognized by product rather than
brand value. Trying experimental concepts will
be helpful for this particular issue in Sephora.

From the interviews, top concern for most of
women about cosmetics was quality of the
prodct. However, factors following quality varied
more than expected.
Mainly the concerns were about the price
point and design of the product. if the quality is
good, they will care about other factors in their
cosmetics. Some of them do not have prefer-
ence except the quality, but design could be
considered a part of product.
Moreover, most of interviewee had variety of
brand’s cosmetics. They are carrying what they
think is good rather than buy one single brand
for all type of cosmetics. However, most of them
also had royalty to few brand in their favorite
category. For Urban Decay’s new line, we can
target that gap.

Smashbox is Urban Decay’s competition.
Their voice is photogenic cosmetics for
studio or normal life photoshoot. Mainly they are
pushing towards more quality side to reinforce
their concept that you can use it on studio
photo shoot right away with Smashbox. They
are agressively marketing by collaborating with
famous artist and unique mechanism of product
usages. However, they are also used a black &
white color theme like every other corporation.

Bobbi Brown is the company who sells similar
product like Urban Decay.
Black, simple and understated tone of voice.
They target middle class young adults. Their
main goal is make cosmmetics simple to wear
and flattening.

Kat Von D is only sold in Sephora. In 2013, the
company has very similar concept to Urban
decay and target the same group of buters.
Their style is related to what Kat Von D does at
outside of the cosmetic field, tattoos.
Mainly black color with Kat Von D’s tattoo
illustration on their products. Other than the
fact, this is products from a famous tatto artist,
they don’t have any special characteristics in
their brand.

Urban, by Urban Decay is inspired by the urban culture and
captures the changing energy of it’s inhabitants transforming the
urban grittiness, skylines, and polish of a global society looking
to uniquely express themselves in this landscape. The Urban line
of cosmetics uniquely speaks to this opportunity by introducing
a line extension that conveys a unique point of view through it’s
packaging, product and messaging that will resonate with it’s loyal
customers and new customers alike for the continues growth and
relevancy for the future of Urban Decay.

very abstract to create product what I want and

Urban wants to be as trendy as possible and
represent contemporary cityscapes.
The first idea was graffiti or stencil style for
the logo. However, it didn’t matched up with the
product line and was disconnected with what I
want to say.
The second idea was a geometric font with
A as a triangle. Recently, geometric shapes,
especially the triangle, is trendy symbol on
the internet. Using that idea, I created the
Urban logo.

with other companies. However, for urban, it will
shows the structure of product for full protection

If the product is the upside of a bridge, the
exterior of building, box will be underneath of
a bridge, and structure of building, to show the
