Financial Advice for New FathersBy Jason Alderman

Each year when Father’s Day rolls around, I’m

reminded that I wouldn’t trade the experience of raising my two kids for the world. But when I think back to how naïve my wife and I once were about the costs of raising children, I can’t help wishing we’d been better prepared.

If you’re a new dad, or about to become one, you’d better sit down. Ac-cording to the U.S. Depart-ment of Agriculture, a typi-cal middle-income family can expect to spend over

$241,000 to raise a newborn child until age 18 – and that doesn’t even include prenatal care or college costs.

Right now, you’re probably more worried about getting enough sleep than funding your retirement. But at some point, you’ll need to plot out a financial roadmap to en-sure your family’s future financial security. As one dad to another, here are a few strategies I’ve learned that can help:

Start saving ASAP. It’s hard to save for the future when your present expenses are so daunting, but it’s important to start making regular contributions to several savings vehicles, even if only a few dollars at a time:

Establish an emergency fund with enough cash to •cover at least six months of living expenses. Start small by having $25 or $50 a month deducted from your paycheck and automatically deposited into a separate savings account.

Even if retirement is decades away, the sooner you •start saving and compounding your interest, the faster your savings will grow. If your employer of-fers 401(k) matching contributions, contribute at least enough to take full advantage of the match.

Once those two accounts are well established, open •a 529 Qualified State Tuition Plan to start saving for your children’s education.

If funding these accounts seems impossible, look for a few luxuries you could cut from your budget for six months – lattes, eating out, premium cable, etc. After six months, evaluate whether they were actual “needs” or

Adonis James, senior at Petersburg High School, has always liked helping out throughout the community and giving back. He helps out a lot through his basketball team, where he is a shooting guard from the Crimson Wave. He has participated in feeding the homeless, acted as a Big Brother in the Big Brother, Big Sister program at Walnut Hill Elementary School, and has acted as an instructor at various youth sports camps. “There’s a lot of kids around where I live at that don’t have as many opportunities and aren’t as blessed as I am,” Adonis said. “So when I make it out, I want to give back to people that didn’t have what I had growing up.”

He’s cited two Petersburg alumni who have given back: St. Louis Rams defensive tackle Kendall Langford and R&B recording artist Trey Songz. Langford donated equipment to the weight room and Trey Songz has donated several items to the high school and community. He looks to these two as examples of those who have left and came back to make the com-munity better.

Another thing the two celebrities have in common, besides Petersburg, is that they are do-ing what they love using their talents. Using his talents to make money is something Adonis strives to do like one of his idols, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter. “He takes one of his God-given gifts and makes it way bigger than what it is. He raps and turned his rap career into one of the biggest businesses in the world.”

Adonis, who is a standout in basketball at Petersburg High School, isn’t playing at Virginia Wesleyan College, where he will be going in the fall. He plans to try out for the team there, but will focus mainly on his studies since he will be majoring in accounting. Despite the fact that his basketball career may potentially be cut short, he says that he’d still like to be involved with the sport by becoming a general manager for an NBA team. “Using my account-ing degree, I’d like to make as much money as possible,” he said.

It’s this goal to someday own a team that he hopes to someday be like those before him, com-ing from Petersburg and returning to make a difference in the city. Doing what he loves to do is the ultimate goal, but giving back is something he strives to do for the rest of his life.

Former Times-Dispatch Editor releases first book in trilogyBy Janeal Downs

EGO, or Energy Gets Opportunity, is the slogan Glenn Proctor used for not only his career coaching business, Reddjobb, but also to motivate his success and the release of his book of poems. “Kick-ing Bottles, News & Dust An Autobiography – 50 Years of Poems” isthefirstbookofpoemsinthetrilogyProctorwillwritedetailinghis life.

Proctor is currently a motivational speaker, career adviser, and leadership trainer. He also served as a journalist, professor and eventhefirstAfricanAmericantopeditorfortheRichmondTimes-Dispatch. His experience as an editor of his own work, other jour-nalists’ work, and his students’ work is what he said gave him the necessary skills to write and edit his book. “I’ve been editing for forever and that has helped me become a better writer,” Proctor said. Other than his work as a writer, he also served in the Vietnam War. He is a former Marine Corps gunnery sergeant and served six years on active duty and six years in the Marine Corps Reserve. Proctor said his book includes poems on his success within his careers, growing up as a foster kid, and even his problems with alcohol.

“I’ve been a professional mentor for hundreds and hundreds of people throughout my career and so I’m just sharing my life story,” Proctor said. “If some other person can feel like they

read their story and I’m motivating them to do better, that’s the whole purpose.” President of Metropolitan Business League of Virginia, Oliver Singleton said, “Almost every poem resonates with me. They touch memories and experiences of my entire life and I expect the experiences of a lot of people like me.” An-other reader, Roberta Sachs who is an Emmy Award winning journalist and the president of Oster Sachs Communications said, “(Glenn) Proctor’s piercing poetry celebrates life – from the loneliness of foster care to Vietnam, the newsroom and the executive suite. He tackles race, class, politics, family, war, addiction, and love with levity and wisdom.”

About a year ago he decided to write his autobiography of poems. Proctor said he has been writing poems for over 50 years, and as a lifelong poet, it was not hard to piece together

His previously published e-book, “tweets, greets, sweets, & beets A GUIDE TO MANAGING EGO” is also available on the same website. Though he said his main focus at the moment is his trilogy, Proctor said he has also been working on a relation-ship book for many years and has been asked to write a book on management.

Proctor said he wants to be successful in whatever he does “whether it was as a marine, or whether it was as a reporter, or college instructor, or as an editor and top editor, I just wanted to be successful.”

celebrate the life that she lived and the gifts that she gave to us. She included us---all of us. Her generosity made us feel that the impossible could be possible if only we would muster up the courage to educate our-selves, and then stand for what we know is right not only when others stand with us, but especially when they don’t. One of the beliefs Dr. Angelou held most dear was that, “Courage is the most important virtue because without it nothing else can be accomplished.” She would always say, “We must stand up for ourselves so that we can stand up for others. The humanity in you must take up for itself and not allow itself to be assaulted.”

Words are things that are often used as weapons and Dr. Maya Angelou transformed them into tools of honor. With her words, she carved and crafted a vi-sion of humanity that projected promise…she looked

beyond what was and hoped for what could be. Dr. Maya Angelou had faith in the possi-bility of US-- and what we could become. She has left us with her powerful legacy. In the coming years, may we see the dawning of a new day when we will have enough Courage to actually be Courageous. Miss Maya, I hope we all work together to become everything you envisioned and pass on to humanity enough love and respect that we can move forward together in peace.

One who will never be forgotten is “Miss” Maya Angelou. Her life and legacy will continue because the mark that she made upon humanity cannot be undone. Even if one has never read one of her nu-merous books or heard her melodious voice as she spoke or read her own prose or poetry, the name Maya Angelou is known throughout the world. It is not because she walked with Kings and Queens of nations or hobnobbed with the rich and powerful. No. It is because of how she made people feel when they were in her presence. If you ever had the privi-lege to actually sit with Miss Maya, you know how “special” she made you feel. We all felt as though we were the most important person in the room whenever she spoke. The most amazing thing is that she could accomplish that in small intimate settings just as easily as in a massive and austere concert hall. She drew us in and made us recognize the frailty and the potency of our very humanity. That was the very, very special and extraordinary thing about Dr. Maya Angelou.

The loss of a great teacher is difficult but, because she was so great, what she has left in her wake is a mountain of teachers that makes the impact of her teaching exponentially greater. And in order for that greatness to be birthed to the fullness of its potential, Miss Maya, the teacher, had to go. Her work was done and the ones who have been taught must now rise to even greater heights and speak even more potent truths. The world has lost an author, activist, artist, and scholar, and though we mourn her passing, we must

My Hero, My Dad

Dad, Daddy, Papa, Uncle, Father, Grandpa, Pop Pop… however we call him, our father or grandfather or some other male who played a large role in our lives is one of the �irst men in our lives. He is the �irst male in�luence, the one who teaches us how to ride our bikes, re-minds us of curfews, teaches us how to �ish, play a sport, gives us advice, is usually the �irst one we call when we are in trouble, or simply put is just always there when we need him.

This Father’s Day, Urban Views Weekly celebrates those special men in our lives: our fathers, our grandfathers, uncles, brothers, or any male �igure that played a special role in our lives. Readers from across the region submitted pictures and Father’s Day wishes to those special men in their lives.

Our father, Vaughn Quash, has to be one of the best dads in the world. So many good things come to mind when thinking about him; he is kind, sel�less, supportive and positive. He is always there for us with words of wisdom, unsolicited advice or for our favorite: Daddy/daughter loans. He is popular around the City of Richmond for being an amazing teacher and athletic referee with Quastar LLC. We can’t go anywhere in public without someone recog-nizing him! We would like to thank you Dad for all you are and have been to us throughout the years. You are an excellent father, husband and a great example to men overall. (Whit-ney, Ariel, and Quinn Quash)

My Dad, Jun Lockett’s best advice that has become part of my philosophy: “Always ask or apply for what you want. Don’t be scared of the outcome. What’s the worst that could hap-pen? I want to recognize my dad, Curtis Robertson, Sr. He has always loved, cared, provided for, and been there for my two brothers and me; from teaching us to play baseball, taking us to the movies, �ixing our cars, giving advice, or beating us in Uno or Monopoly. He always told us he teaches us everything we need to know, because he’s not going to be around forever. He is one of the most important people in the world to me. I love my dad, Edward Grif�in, because he really is a great man. Although I am his only bio-logical child, I have watched him over the years care for so many other children as though they were his own. He’s there for them emotionally, encouraging them, supporting them �i-nancially, and just being that great father that they never had. Although, I am jealous at times of the time he spends with other kids, it is a great indication of how great of a grandfather he will be one day. I really love my dad. (Keenya Kelly Monroe)

My husband Eric Ingram is the best dad ever! For his own 3 children, Erin, Cori, and Chris and countless others that need a strong and committed male role model who cares about them individually. My dad is Dr. Robert Frederick Richardson, Jr. He resides in Ashland, VA but is retiring this month as Superintendent of New Kent County Public Schools. He has served in many capaci-ties in several school divisions, and his work in the �ield of Special Education has been most inspiring to me. My dad and I have a very special relationship. He made the choice to adopt me, love me, support me and treat me no different than if I were not adopted. Our family endured some pretty challenging circumstances, but our relationship has remained strong, and I really look up to him. I hope that he enjoys his retirement and knows how very much he is loved. This Father’s Day, I want to say “thank you” dad, just for being the man that you are. I thank God for you. (Joy Richardson)

My father (the late Lieutenant Ozell Johnson) died when I was 14, but he has always been a great in�luence in my life. He always told me to do the following: seek a constant relationship with the Lord, love freely, invest in your community, be accountable, and always be aware of the seeds you sow. Fundraising is about asking for money. That’s the common perception. But is it the truth? Here’s what we have learned from our extensive work with nonprofit organizations, col-

leges and universities, individual donors, program officers and foundation executives: fundraising is about much more than asking for money. Individual solicitations, proposal submissions, 5K runs, and galas are methods and tactics. Behind these are the fundamentals of your nonprofit’s business. These fundamentals often influence giving and the amount of a gift.

Here are a few examples of business decisions, missteps and inde-cisions that can contribute to a lack of investment in nonprofits.

Failure to articulate and diligently pursue your niche.1.

Operating without a multi-year strategic plan.2.

Seeking capital investments without a strategy for growing 3. revenue for operations.

Accepting a gift for a specific purpose and use it for another purpose.4.

Being slow in sending out thank you letters. Creating a form letter and sending it 5. out with a computer generated signature at the end of the month.

Allocating funds in ways that are not in line with your core priorities.6.

Offering executive compensation that is out of line with salaries of other employees 7. and the community.

Isolating your organization from community stakeholders, the business commu-8. nity, and those you serve.

Many of the above are things we have heard from major donors. One thing we know

about major donors is that not all of them start out as major donors. And many do not announce themselves as such. This is true of individual donors as well as foundations and corpo-rations. Treat everyone well. Demonstrate that you are seri-ous about your business and communicate that consistently in words and in actions.

Here’s a recent quote from a major donor, “You have to recognize my giving. Not just for me, but to inspire others. People don’t understand that in recognizing me you are inspiring others to give.” Don’t make the blunder of minimizing the contributions of major donors. If you don’t have a donor recognition program, put one in place. Be consistent in how you recognize donors. Value your relationships. And don’t be deceived by people who downplay a desire for recognition. Very few people will tell you directly, “I want to be recognized.” It is your job to recognize donors in a first class way. Don’t be afraid to consider naming

opportunities as appropriate.

In regards to gifts from foundations and corporations: remember that people work in these institutions. They remember whether you submit your report on time, if you invite them to events, update them on your progress, and – most importantly – whether or not you achieve the goals outlined in your proposal.

Take care of the business of running a nonprofit: it will support your fundraising.

Get insured. If your family depends on your income, you must be prepared for life’s unexpected events, whether an accident, illness, unemployment or death. Get adequate coverage for:

Health insurance. Everyone needs medical insurance, no matter how young or •healthy.

Homeowner/renter’s insurance. Don’t let theft, fire or another catastrophe leave •your family without a home or possessions. To reduce premiums, consider choos-ing a higher deductible.

Life insurance. You’ll probably want coverage worth at least five to 10 times your •annual pay – more, if you want to cover college costs. And don’t forget to insure your spouse’s life so you’ll be protected as well.

Disability insurance. Millions of Americans suffer disabilities serious enough to •

miss work for months or years, yet many forego disability insurance, potentially leaving them without an income after a serious accident or illness. Ask about your employer’s sick leave and short-term disability benefits and if long-term disability is offered, consider buying it.

Car insurance. Almost every state requires insurance if you own or drive a car, •and for good reason: It protects you financially should you cause an accident or be hit by an uninsured driver. Make sure you have sufficient liability coverage to protect your net worth and income – it only takes one serious accident to wipe out your savings.

And finally, spend responsibly. If you buy things you don’t really need or can’t afford, you’ll just end up having to work longer hours to pay for them – time you could have spent watching your kids growing up.

As the father of three girls, Frank Sanyour was man enough to rock hot pink toe nail polish, was known to wake his daughters up by dancing and singing to MC Hammer’s “Hammer Time”, and religiously laid on the horn when dropping them off for school because it would give them ‘something to remember’. Now that his daughters are grown, he’s still known around town as the guy that never wears a shirt and has amazing Christmas lights. His girls adore him and wish him a Happy Father’s Day. My kids are truly blessed to have the greatest father ever! My husband, Ronald Bond, Jr. displays his unconditional love and affec-tion to our two boys daily. Although my oldest isn’t biologically his, you would never know the difference. He stepped up to the plate and loved him like his own. I nicknamed my husband “super dad”, because there isn’t anything in this world he would not do for our boys. I would say the greatest gift he gives our children is being an excellent male role model. My brother, Emanuel ‘Seymore’ Thompson is not only a great brother, but he is a great father. He has four children of his own. He takes the time out to spend quality time with each of his kids, both together and separately. My brother also manages to make time to spend with his only granddaughter. Every summer he plans to make sure she, along with his sons, experiences an educational vacation each year. He has also stepped up to help father his nephews. My brother understands the importance of family. Our father was the only male of his siblings. When he died, my brother stepped uptohelpfillthevoidthatwasleftbythepassingofmyfather.Hedidsobymakingsuremyfather’ssistersweretakencare of. He would visit with them weekly and take them to run errands as needed. My brother even was there for me, his ‘lil sis’, when I was in college.
