What to expect from usThe educational concept of this Master program isunique; education in concurrency with employmentin a professional practice. This concurrenteducation offers students experience andeducation beyond the school curriculum, essentialto their professional formation as urban designers.Additionally, the Academy itself is a laboratory forspatial assignments from real stakeholders. Ourtutors are professionals from a variety ofdisciplines, but all with a strong relation to practice.
The Design Studio is the heart of the masterprogram. In the studio students are trained to applyall kinds of skills and methods towards ever moreconvincing design proposals for complex spatialproblems. The studio assignments are invariablyrelated to the complexity of contemporary societiesand will engage social, cultural, political, economicand technological parameters.
What do we expect from youStudents are required to find a job in a design firmand work minimum 20 hours a week. Progress willbe evaluated through a series of portfolioassessments. If you are unable to find a suitableposition in an architectural firm or urban designpractice, the Academy will offer alternative practiceresearch studios, where you can engage inpractical work for a diverse range of clients.
Programme in briefThe urban designer's core competence is the abilityto design spatial conditions facilitating diverse anddynamic urban programmes and urban conditionswith respect for the social, ecological and economicvalues of the site and society. A specificcompetence of urban designers is the ability toswitch easily between the different scales and tostrategically reconcile the conflicting needs thatmay arise at those different scales. This requiresgreat social and political sensibility as well aswell-developed communication and collaborationskills.
Content of the programmeThe first year program is fully dedicated todeveloping a designer attitude towards the worldaround us. The studio programs are supported by arange of skill-based trainings and a theory programon architecture and urban design, economy,sustainable design and art history. Studentslearning outcomes will be assessed on the basis ofportfolios.

Admission requirements
Minimum admission requirements for theMaster degree programme:
Bachelor (B/ BSc) Urban Planning.Bachelor (B) Art Academy (Urbandesign / Interior design)
Applicants are required to: work a minimum of 20 hours a week in arelevant practice (Urban design firm orrelated). The academy offers alternativepractice studio’s for students who aretemporarily unable to find a regular job. Inthese alternative practice studio’s studentswill work on assignments by realstakeholders and will be supervised bypractitioners. There is usually noremuneration for participating students.

Accommodation
This course will take place inTilburg at Fontys School of Fineand Performing Arts, an inspiringcommunity of about 1.500students pursuing a creativecareer. We are located in awonderful assemblage of historicand new buildings (designed byDutch architect Jo Coenen)surrounding a former monasterygarden. Tilburg is part of athriving region in the South of theNetherlands. It has a greatModern Art Museum, a leadingTextile Museum and Textile Laband accommodates over 20,000students in a large number ofdepartments.
The Fontys way of studying
The core of the programme is formed by studio work:project learning. Students tackle individually or insmall groups a certain ‘problem’ that is embedded inthe assignment. The studio work is accompanied byvarious theoretical courses.

Students graduating in the Master Architecture orMaster Urbanism programme are eligible forregistration at the Dutch Licensing Board forArchitects and urban designers.
Why concurrent ?
Critical aspects of architectural and urban designpractice can only be experienced through the actualexecution of designs and the critical assessment ofdesigns in real world contexts. Moreover, contrary touniversity graduates, concurrent students can enterthe architects register immediately upon completionof their studies.
