Welcome to the final Urrbrae Agricultural High School Newsletter for 2020, and what a year it has been. This year has proved to be unforgettable in all the worst possible ways. When we reflect back over our lives, 2020 will prove to be a landmark year where nobody forgets where they were or what they were doing. The year commenced with the worst bushfires in Australia’s history, impacting a number of Urrbrae families who were left to pick up the pieces. This was closely followed by the COVID-19 pandemic which affected every part of our daily routines and changed the social fabric of our society. Although South Australia was one of the lucky states in terms of numbers, there can be no doubt that this school year was very different from the past. Mass gatherings were banned, and sports day, interstate camps and excursions, parent teacher interviews, Open Day all these annual events, and more, were either postponed or cancelled. This newsletter is usually jam-packed with end of year events, and whilst many still took place they were totally modified to meet COVID restrictions. Nevertheless we still managed to celebrate student success at all year levels, and we were able to farewell our Year 12s in a fitting manner. Year 12 Formal and Graduation COVID restrictions meant we were unable to hold our Year 12 Graduation at the Convention Centre, nor the Formal at the Intercontinental. In true Urrbrae style we came up with an alternative a combined Graduation and Formal on the Farm. Although limited only to Year 12 students and staff, we were able to provide a wonderful evening with tables placed outdoors on the Library Lawns. Many thanks to the huge number of Urrbrae staff who all pitched in and made the event happen with only 3 days notice. A special mention to Mrs Michelle Rowe, the Year 12 Coordinator, who took a key role in the organisation of the evening. It was a great way to finish off a year that has been so challenging to all, but particularly our Year 12s in their final year of schooling. Presentation Night & Mortlock Scholarships Once again, this was a student-only event which occurred in the Urrbrae Hall on December 4th, which was live-streamed to parents. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of the Award recipients from the night who were recognised for their contribution to the Urrbrae school community in some way, shape, manner or form. Some excelled academically, whilst others contributed enormously to the wider life of the school or modelled leadership to other students. They are all to be congratulated for the little extra something they brought to Urrbrae Agricultural High School this year. A full list of award winners can be found further on in this newsletter. Year 7 into 8 Transition Programme Our transition programme for 2020 was thrown into chaos with the COVID lockdown, and the resulting restrictions. Whilst some schools were able to go ahead with parent/student transition, the fact that Urrbrae was welcoming 200 new students posed a health risk that was deemed not acceptable. As a result our transition programme has had to take a new form this year, with parents being invited to a live- stream information session on November 24 th . Unfortunately a technical glitch meant the link dropped out, but a recorded version was sent out to all parents within the hour. We apologise whole-heartedly for the malfunction, but COVID has meant a steep learning curve for all of us, not just the students. A special welcome video for students has also been recorded by our current Year 8 students in order to show what a wonderful school we have. Thank You to our SRC Presidents for 2020 I would really like to thank our SRC Presidents, Seb Rogers and Zoe Johnston, for all of the hard work they have undertaken this year, representing our Student Voice. Once again, this has been a disrupted year, and many of the events where Seb and Zoe would normally have represented the school did not occur. The use of Webex for our whole school assemblies this year was not without some dramatic moments, as we all struggled to work out how to present an assembly in this format. Seb and Zoe displayed poise and maturity as they worked with me to address the whole school in our regular updates, with some extremely humorous moments that luckily were not seen by the rest of the school community. I thank them both for the leadership they have modelled to the younger members of our school, despite a tumultuous year, and wish them all the very best in their leadership roles in the future. I would like to take this final opportunity to thank you all for being part of the Urrbrae Community for 2020, and I look forward to catching up with you all again in 2021. • Welcome to the final Urrbrae Agricultural High School Newsletter for 2020, and what a year it has been. This year has proved to be

unforgettable in all the worst possible ways. When we reflect back over our lives, 2020 will prove to be a landmark year where nobody

forgets where they were or what they were doing. The year commenced with the worst bushfires in Australia’s history, impacting a number

of Urrbrae families who were left to pick up the pieces. This was closely followed by the COVID-19 pandemic which affected every part of

our daily routines and changed the social fabric of our society. Although South Australia was one of the lucky states in terms of numbers,

there can be no doubt that this school year was very different from the past. Mass gatherings were banned, and sports day, interstate

camps and excursions, parent teacher interviews, Open Day – all these annual events, and more, were either postponed or cancelled. This

newsletter is usually jam-packed with end of year events, and whilst many still took place they were totally modified to meet COVID

restrictions. Nevertheless we still managed to celebrate student success at all year levels, and we were able to farewell our Year 12s in a

    fitting manner.

    Year 12 Formal and Graduation

COVID restrictions meant we were unable to hold our Year 12 Graduation at the Convention Centre, nor the Formal at the Intercontinental.

In true Urrbrae style we came up with an alternative – a combined Graduation and Formal on the Farm. Although limited only to Year 12

students and staff, we were able to provide a wonderful evening with tables placed outdoors on the Library Lawns. Many thanks to the

huge number of Urrbrae staff who all pitched in and made the event happen with only 3 days notice. A special mention to Mrs Michelle

Rowe, the Year 12 Coordinator, who took a key role in the organisation of the evening. It was a great way to finish off a year that has been

so challenging to all, but particularly our Year 12s in their final year of schooling.

    Presentation Night & Mortlock Scholarships

Once again, this was a student-only event which occurred in the Urrbrae Hall on December 4th, which was live-streamed to parents. I

would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of the Award recipients from the night who were recognised for their contribution to the

Urrbrae school community in some way, shape, manner or form. Some excelled academically, whilst others contributed enormously to the

wider life of the school or modelled leadership to other students. They are all to be congratulated for the little extra something they brought

to Urrbrae Agricultural High School this year. A full list of award winners can be found further on in this newsletter.

Year 7 into 8 Transition Programme

Our transition programme for 2020 was thrown into chaos with the COVID lockdown, and the resulting restrictions. Whilst some schools

were able to go ahead with parent/student transition, the fact that Urrbrae was welcoming 200 new students posed a health risk that was

deemed not acceptable. As a result our transition programme has had to take a new form this year, with parents being invited to a live-

stream information session on November 24th. Unfortunately a technical glitch meant the link dropped out, but a recorded version was sent

out to all parents within the hour. We apologise whole-heartedly for the malfunction, but COVID has meant a steep learning curve for all of

us, not just the students. A special welcome video for students has also been recorded by our current Year 8 students in order to show

what a wonderful school we have.

Thank You to our SRC Presidents for 2020

I would really like to thank our SRC Presidents, Seb Rogers and Zoe Johnston, for all of the hard work they have undertaken this year,

representing our Student Voice. Once again, this has been a disrupted year, and many of the events where Seb and Zoe would normally

have represented the school did not occur. The use of Webex for our whole school assemblies this year was not without some dramatic

moments, as we all struggled to work out how to present an assembly in this format. Seb and Zoe displayed poise and maturity as they

the rest of the school community. I thank them both for the leadership they have modelled to the younger members of our school, despite a

tumultuous year, and wish them all the very best in their leadership roles in the future.

I would like to take this final opportunity to thank you all for being part of the Urrbrae Community for 2020, and I look forward to catching up

Students in Year 9 Art have continued to develop their skills in observation, focusing on the positive and negative spaces in order to record what they see as accurately as possible. They have then converted their hand drawings into creative and at times, somewhat ‘creepy’ hand monsters and handled using new techniques for colouring well, in order to make effective hand monster outcomes.

    Wetland Ecology Camp

At the end of term 3 on a very cold and wet night 20 EFG students camped at the wetlands for workshops with Anne Frodsham, an entomology lecturer, and Nick Crouch, a Conservation and Land Management lecturer from TAFE. On the Friday we went on an excursion to the amazing Head quarters of Animals Anonymous near Mylor and a freshwater life monitoring session with Jeremy Gramp (of Green Adelaide/NRM) at Aldgate Creek. This was a great opportunity for the Year 8s and 9s to get to know each other a bit better and for three Year 10s to exercise their leadership skills as the Seniors. Students also learnt a lot about native animals, their habitat needs and the importance of land conservation and regeneration.

Thank you to Craig Fraser and Wes Parker for their assistance on the camp.

School Waste and Recycling Bin Update

This term the SRC and EFG students have joined forces to participate in work required to re-label various bins around the school yard with

new recycling labels. Some students have also been producing some short

videos to help with promoting the correct use of the bins.

    Bins now include:

    Yellow mixed recycling

    Green compostable food waste

    10c Deposit bottles/cartons

    Red General Landfill

Students need to be responsible for recycling their own soft plastics. Some supermarkets take bags of clean soft plastic.

We hope that by diverting much of our waste or rather, resources, to recycling programs we will be significantly reducing the volume of items to

    landfill. Vanessa Greenslade, Wetlands Manager

URRBRAE ON SHOW A MAJOR SUCCESS The implementation of the in-house Urrbrae on Show day was instrumental in providing opportunities for our students to gain a ‘show experience’. This special day provided many activities for our students to display and promote their skills and enthusiasm in a show type environment. Staff, led by Ms Larissa Tallent, spent many hours planning for and organising this massive event. The day was a huge success with a real buzz of excitement around the school. The following feature article provides extensive details regarding the Urrbrae on Show day. Vince Fleming, Assistant Principal - Agriculture

URRBRAE ON SHOW DAY- FRIDAY OCTOBER 30TH 2020 With the cancellation of this year’s Royal Adelaide Show due to COVID, a small committee of staff decided Urrbrae High School needed a replacement activity to not only showcase the wonderful things we do at the school but also to give staff and students the opportunity to relax and have fun, surrounded by music, food, animals and friends. After the year we’ve all had, it was a must to make it happen. The plans for the day moved around in circles a number of times depending on the current situation with COVID-19. We were hoping to include our wider school community and invite family and friends, but unfortunately, it was deemed too risky and difficult to control numbers therefore ithad to become an “in school” event only. Although disappointed we couldn’t open our gates to others, we managed to have a fantastic day enjoyed by all. The following activities/demos were conducted on the day: Animal Leading and Judging - The main judging arena was a vibe of activity from start to finish. Judging included classes of Alpacas, Goats, Merinos, Suffolks and Cattle. Over 100 students were involved with skill levels ranging from Beginner through to Experienced. It was wonderful to see a Mini Royal Adelaide Show re-enactment with nerves, smiles, tears and joy all “on show” in the ring! All participating students should be extremely proud of their efforts and enthusiasm displayed leading up to, and in particular during, Show Day. Congratulations! Thanks to the major sponsor Coopers Animal Health who donated an exceptional amount of prizes for class placings on the day. Also thanks to GT Bark & Mulch Supplies and the Royal Adelaide Show Society for the donation and loan of materials and equipment to help enhance the day. It was great to have guest judge Anthony Hurst from Seriston Pastoral to judge the Handlers Classes. Anthony has judged at all the Royal Shows in the nation. Accompanying him was his father, Ken Hurst, an Urrbrae Old Scholar (1953-56) who presented the ribbons. Former Urrbrae Scholar and Agriculture Teacher, Ian Wilson also presented ribbons to winners on the day and commentated our shearing demonstrations. We thank these special guests for their contributions.

  • ANIMAL JUDGING/HANDLER RESULTS

The Animal Nursery - Our Stock Shed was converted into a Baby Animal Nursery where students could pat, hold and interact with lambs, goat kids, calves, puppies and baby chickens. This was an absolute highlight of the day fully packed with visitors at all time.

The Bee Shed - Students were given the opportunity to watch Mr Heynemann’s experienced Bee Club students in action, making hives, extracting honey and teaching visitors the basics of Bee Keeping. There was also honey tasting available which was a big hit for all. The Aquaculture Shed - A tour was included in the Urrbrae Trails program. Aquaculture teacher, Mr Marriott, along with club members proudly led visitors through the area and explained the current practices operating in the shed.

The Shearing Show - Our very own year 11 student, Toby Judd volunteered to be our “performing shearer” for the day continuously shearing our sheep. Toby’s shearing was commentated by a former Urrbrae Scholar and Agriculture Teacher, Mr Ian Wilson. Ian and Toby entertained and educated hundreds of people throughout the day and we are extremely appreciative of their time and participation in the day. “The Green Brick Road”- This activity involved students moving around the School, Farm and Wetlands collecting free samples in a “goodie bag” at various stations upon completing a task. Approximately 400 students participated in this activity with the assistance of 20 staff and 32 student helpers. Two highlights of this trail were Station 3 in The Orchard where students received a lovely SA grown fresh Orange and the final station whereby students collected a sample jar of delicious Beerenburg jam! huge thank you to the sponsors Lochert Bros for donating the Oranges and Beerenburg for donating the jams. “Fun on the Oval”- Neil Muggleton:

The HPE team had a variety of demonstrations running on Urrbrae Show Day. These included Canoe Polo and Rock Climbing. These demos were done by year 10 Outdoor Ed and Adventure Club members. They were great role models for the students who watched and also forour primary school visitors. We also ran games on the oval. These included Horseshoe Throwing, Sheaf Tossing and the Obstacle Race Track. Students were able to challenge themselves and friends and won prizes for participating. There was also a fitness testing station where students could do a 20m sprint, vertical jump, hand grip test or flexibility test. They recorded their results on a card which compared them to elite athlete results, such as Usain Bolt’s 20m sprint of 1.69sec. It was a great day on the oval and a special thanks to our band of merry helpers.

  • Music on “The Green”- Vinnie Symes This year has been a significantly challenging year for the Urrbrae High School music students. Having such an awesome opportunity to perform on Show Day has been incredibly beneficial for the morale of the students. Every class was able to get up and show some of the repertoire that they have learnt this year. The repertoire that the classes are playing is incredibly diverse and this is the first time the classes have been able to perform to their entire peer group. A huge thank you to Ashton Valley Fresh (Cerevalo Family) who kindly donated the truck which formed the stage for the day. There is no more fitting stage for the students here at Urrbrae and it was certainly a highlight of the festivities. All in all, a great day was had by everybody involved.

Art Mural on The Farm- Kate Blue: As part of Urrbrae on Show, Art and Design staff and students participated in a range of ways. The Show poster that was seen around the school was designed by Yr. 10 Student Tayla Browning as part of a class task. Tayla’s poster was selected as the successful final outcome as it suited the brief well. The Arts also contributed to the day by designing and creating a mural on the Dairy Shed, which is at the entrance to the Farm. The mural was designed in collaboration with interested Arts staff and students and assistance was given to drawing it onto the wall from experienced and well-known mural painter, John Whitney, whose help was greatly appreciated. Painting of the mural on the day utilised the skills and generosity of time with three Visual Art teachers, Ms Venning, Ms Grist and Ms Blue, along with ten year 9 students and three year 10 students who were rostered on throughout the day. The students were an asset to the group and worked really hard to complete as much as possible before the pack up time of 3pm. Wood Oven Pizza Making - Our Year 11 Food and Hospitality students under the wonderful guidance and direction of their teacher, Georgia Evreniadis, worked tirelessly all day to prepare, cook and serve over 150 Pizzas. They were definitely a favourite of many! SRC BBQ - Over 50 SRC students were involved in cooking up a feast of sausages and onions along with managing our Vilis and Golden North Vans for the day. The students, under direction of Matt Krieg, worked hard all day to feed hundreds of people. Great work by all! Whip Cracking Demos - The Whip Cracking Club, capably lead by Ali Vlachos provided entertaining demonstrations all day and managed to teach their audience a few tricks of the trade. Tech Studies Demos - The Tech Studies team organised a group of year 8-12 students to showcase their skills in the workshops throughout the day. Our visiting Primary School students were very impressed! The Wetlands - A favourite with the visiting Primary Schools whereby our talented Environmental Focus Group students guided over 200 Year 5-7 students through various activities throughout the day. They were fantastic ambassadors for Urrbrae. The Wetlands was also a station on “The Green Brick Road” which required participating students to complete a “nature walk” spotting birdlife prior to collecting a Chocolate Frog. It was a great “eye opener” for many students who have not visited the area in some time.

STEM Centre Display - There were a number of invited guests within the Agricultural Industry who set up displays and were present to chat with our students about the importance of their businesses and possible career and course pathways in the industry. We’d like to thank the following organisations for making the effort and providing their time to be present at our Show Day: PIRSA, Adelaide University, Thomas Foods, McBride Family, Elders, and RST. Spectacular Science Show - Mr Reed, along with his wonderful assistants Ms Jathin and “Sam the Man”, managed to wow the audience with 3 very entertaining and educational Science Shows. These shows all finished off with a terrifying “bang” blowing up a bin full of table tennis balls. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all, especially the 250 year 5-7 primary students who laughed and cheered the whole way through. Urrbrae Trails for visiting Primary Schools- Brooke Hewitt (student):

On Friday the 30th of October Urrbrae Agricultural High School held its first ever Urrbrae on Show. This event took many hands to make the day possible especially with 250 primary school students attending from Highgate, Clapham and Torrens Valley Christian College, accompanied by adults as well. These school students were primarily looked after by the Year 10 Urrbrae Trails classes. These Urrbrae students worked with approximately 10 students each throughout the day to run workshops and tours. Workshops included the Shearing Show, commentated by Urrbrae Old Scholar Ian Wilson, the Science Show, organised by Ian Reed, a Wetlands workshop, run by the Environmental Focus Group and The Green Brick Road, led by the Urrbrae Trails leaders.

Other attractions on the day which the Primary students experienced were animal judging in the show ring and physical activities on the oval run by the Physical Education faculty. The primary school students also got a unique experience of having a trailer ride which was pulled by a tractor from the Wetlands back to the main farm, which was most definitely a highlight. Our student visitors most enjoyed ‘interacting with the goats and cows’ (Sophie) and ‘having great tour guides and learning about agriculture’ (Hannah). The hands on experiences which everyone got to participate in the Animal Nursery and around the farm enabled the visitors to get outside their comfort zone and have an opportunity to see something unique. Overall, Urrbrae’s student involvement was greatly appreciated as the day went smoothly and was a success. ‘It was a full and exciting day filled with activities for all ages’ (Emelia).

To summarise the day……..Wow, Wow, Wow. Fun filled, entertaining, educational and a whole lot of laughs and smiles had by all. To all the staff and students who participated in the day….thank you for your enthusiasm and efforts to make it so successful. I would also like to thank the lead committee members of Damien Brookes, Ian Reed and Wes Parker who worked above and beyond to assist with the planning, preparation and running of the day. Finally a big thank you to the rest of the committee, Vinnie Symes, Neil Muggleton, Vanessa Greenslade, Kate Blue and Peter Oswald who capably organised their activities for the day and provided support wherever needed. A day like this could not happen without the extra miles this whole committee travelled along the way. Hopefully we can do it all again ,or a modified version in 2021, and open the gates to our families and friends!

  • Year 10 Outdoor Education Mountain Bike

This term the year 10 Outdoor Education class was due to travel to

Melrose for a 3-day mountain bike camp in week 6. It took weeks of

preparation riding in the double lessons around Brownhill Creek and

Randel Reserve, cooking meals in the Trangia and setting up the

tents. Unfortunately, in the days leading up to the camp the COVID

situation changed so the group changed plans for 3 one day

excursions. Day 1 saw the group go to Craigburn Farm trails in the

hills. It was a warm day so the group headed out early to beat the

heat. Watching for snakes as we rode, we did a loop around the

creek and along the train line. Only 2 flat tyres for the loop was good

with the dry conditions. Sitting around having lunch at the buses the message came through that schools were closing. We returned to

school so students could collect their things. The group got excited when lockdown finished and we could go for another ride. This time we

were dropped at Mt Lofty Summit and rode back to school through Cleland Conservation and Belair National Parks. At every opportunity

the students used the bumps to get some air. It was a fast ride back to school as the trails were easy riding. The students were very patient

with all the changes for the course and made the most of every opportunity they could. Well done to everyone, this was a year we will

never forget. Mr Muggleton, Outdoor Education Teacher

Year 11 Outdoor Education Rock Climbing

The semester the year 11 class headed for the hills

for their annual rock-climbing camp. The first day

started at Morialta Conservation Park with the group

climbing the cliffs at Far Crag. 3 climbs were set with

different levels of difficulty and the students all did an

abseil as well. The weather was cloudy which was

great as the rock did not get too hot. The students

used all the safety skills learnt in class to keep the

climbers safe. It was great to see everyone do the

abseil as this can be very challenging. After a day

climbing, the group drove to Onkaparinga Gorge

Conservation Park where we set up camp and ate

dinner. It is always great watching the students cook

and seeing all the different meals they prepare. After a hard night sleeping on the rocky ground we woke to sunshine and headed to the

cliffs for more climbing. The cliff faces are bigger which provided new challenges to the students. Again, they had the opportunity to climb

different grades. The bonus of getting to the top was the view looking out over the river as you descend back down. We climbed for 5 hours

which was a big day. After sneaking to the shops for a well-deserved ice-cream we had dinner and then bed. To finish the camp we did a 2

hour hike around the park and had lunch at Clarendon Bakery before getting back and cleaning up. Everyone on the camp really pushed

themselves and did an amazing job.
