“”THE FIRST THING I REMEMBER IS THE WARM WELCOME I RECEIVED FROM MY MANAGERS AND EVERYBODY IN MY TEAM.

SOUMYADIP SARKAR GRADUATE ELECTRICAL ENGINEER

DEGREE MSc Electrical Power Engineering with Business

I always wanted to work for a top engineering consultancy and URS is among the top consultants across a broad range of disciplines. After successfully applying through the graduate recruitment scheme, I joined URS in August 2013.

The first thing I remember is the warm welcome I received. I was enrolled on the graduate development programme, designed to achieve Chartered Engineer status within three to four years, and was assigned a mentor.

I have been involved in railway signalling power projects. My role includes designing and producing power distribution plans, schematics, single line diagrams, cable sizing, protection device sizing, fault level and voltage drop calculations. I have been on many site surveys to produce site layout drawings to show new cable routes or positions of new equipment.

There are many things I’m good at now that I knew little about, regardless of having a Masters. This is the result of the structured training and the support I receive from my manager, project partners and other experienced colleagues. If ever I need help, I always have somebody to go to without hesitation.

When it comes to offering design engineering services to transport infrastructure, working at URS provides experience that is second to none. From the design of new road and rail systems to the expansion and modernisation of existing infrastructure, URS delivers safe, innovative and sustainable transportation projects.

We are one of the most diverse companies in this sector, so as a graduate engineer you could find yourself involved in feasibility studies, engineering design, construction supervision, project management, CDM coordination, pavement and track design, inspections and surveys, audits, transport planning and expert witness, the list goes on and on.

It is likely that you will start off in a particular team, such as bridge engineering, highway maintenance, geotechnics, research consultancy, electrification or signalling, and from there will have the chance to move to other areas to experience how different teams work together and to develop your own skills.

Since joining URS ten months ago I have been given fantastic opportunities to work on high profile projects. I am currently working on the Enderby Wharf project, a mixed-use development that includes a number of multi-storey blocks.

Thanks to the experience, knowledge and assistance of my colleagues and support I have received, I can contribute to the job and develop my skills. I also get a large base of multidisciplinary experience: involvement in the design of building elements in accordance with Eurocodes, learning appropriate software tools, running and interpreting building analysis, reviewing design drawings - all great opportunities for me to become a Chartered Engineer in the future.

While I develop my career with URS, I am also enrolled on the graduate development programme and took part in the graduate foundation event, a four-day course for URS graduates from across Europe and the Middle East. It provided a variety of challenges and opportunities, and was great fun!

“”MY CONFIDENCE HAS GROWN AS I HAVE DEVELOPED TECHNICAL, PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND TEAMWORKING SKILLS ON THE URS GRADUATE PROGRAMME.

AMBER GAHAN GRADUATE CIVIL ENGINEER

DEGREEMEng Civil and Structural Engineering

During my four year degree course I completed three summer placements with URS in the nuclear power sector, and following my graduation in 2013, I secured a place on the graduate development programme. The industry experience I gained during my placements was invaluable as it provided me with a practical application of the technical skills I studied at university.

I am one year into my URS training agreement working towards my chartership with the Institute of Civil Engineers. I have worked on a variety of nuclear projects. My day-to-day responsibilities primarily involve the production of structural design calculations and design documentation. In addition to developing my technical skills, I have also been involved in the project management of nuclear projects, allowing me to gain experience in the relevant contractual obligations associated with working under NEC3 contracts.

As part of the URS graduate development programme, I have had the opportunity to become a STEM ambassador, a role in which I volunteer at science, technology, engineering and mathematics events in local schools. The role is voluntary and in company time and URS has been very supportive, allowing me take part in events as part of my continued professional development.

Global demand for energy is at an all-time high. To satisfy this need, URS designs, constructs and maintains virtually every type of power plant, as well as the associated transmission and distribution systems.

Working as a graduate in our power sector offers the chance to become involved in very complex engineering challenges, including the decommissioning of nuclear sites, feasibility studies of renewable energy schemes and design of plants, lines or stations. At URS we put quality and safety at the heart of everything we do, and we look for highly analytical individuals who can solve problems effectively.

URS’ experience in renewable energy covers a wide range of technologies and as a graduate you can be involved in onshore and offshore wind projects, hydro-electricity, biomass and energy from waste projects.

MARIA PAPADOPOULOU GRADUATE FLOOD RISK ENGINEER

DEGREESMSc Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development MSc Environmental Monitoring and Assessment

I am in year one of the URS graduate development programme. One of my most interesting jobs so far has been working as part of the Brent Cross Shopping Centre redevelopment team – in the context of this project, the River Brent needs to be realigned to improve the existing regime. My position covers a variety of tasks, such as implementing the outline and detailed design of the river channel, and writing the option appraisal report for the control of groundwater to determine the feasibility of different engineering options.

I was also seconded to the Environment Agency’s national programme of emergency asset inspections in Oxford to develop a programme of inspections, provide the inspection details and update the Asset Inspection Management Systems.

The URS graduate training agreement is supporting me on my road to professional accreditation with the Institution of Civil Engineers. The training agreement is very well structured; graduate engineers can develop both technical and non-technical skills. The graduate development programme runs in parallel with the chartership objectives, accelerating professional accreditation achievement.

There are so many opportunities I can look forward to.

For graduates interested in working with one of the world’s most vital natural resources, URS offers a growing number of multidisciplinary professional services associated with all aspects of water resources and engineering.

The scale of our projects range from flood risk assessments or individual treatment works, through to planning for large developments and preparation of long-term water strategies on a regional basis.

As a graduate engineer or scientist in this area, you will be working for clients including developers, contractors, water companies, industry regulators and agencies. DAN PEERS GRADUATE ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTANT

DEGREE BSc (Hons) Geography (with Industry Year)

I have been on the graduate development programme, which runs alongside training to becoming a Chartered Engineer, for six months. The three year programme includes a management course and a set of core competencies which need to be completed. All graduates attend the graduate foundation event where we get training based on understanding our strengths and weaknesses and how best to approach a task.

I am currently working on an environmental ground investigation project. Environmental investigations are all about balance between social, economic and environmental issues. Every project requires a different approach and I enjoy discussing various options based on the ground conditions and potential hazards in that particular area. The biggest challenge for me has been being able to control site situations. Another challenge has been learning the technical side of the job. My manager and allocated ‘buddy’ are both very knowledgeable and always available to help when needed.

I enjoy working with people from across URS and other companies. I work in a close-knit team who support each other in all aspects of a project. We have a strong graduate community at URS with social events and training regularly arranged.“”THERE ARE NEW CHALLENGES EVERY DAY.

IT BUILDS YOUR CONFIDENCE AND TEACHES YOU TO TRUST WHAT YOU KNOW.
