the United States, we provide engineering services and
critical technical support to virtually every federal agency,
including the Departments of Defense, Energy, State and
Homeland Security, as well as NASA, the Intelligence
Community and the Environmental Protection Agency.
We also serve the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning
Authority and defense agencies in the United Kingdom

URS develops and modernizes weapons systems, refurbishes military vehicles
and aircraft, and provides flight training to U.S. and NATO armed forces. We also

To meet the need for reliable electricity throughout the
world, URS designs, constructs, retrofits and maintains
virtually every type of power plant, as well as transmis-
sion and distribution systems. Our services range from
planning and permitting through engineering, procure-
ment and construction to facility start-up and operations
and maintenance. We also provide decommissioning and
closure services for facilities no longer in use.
URS’ expertise encompasses coal-fired, gas-fired and nuclear power plants, as
well as alternative and renewable energy projects. We have engineered and/
or constructed more than 250,000 megawatts of electricity, including some of
the world’s largest hydroelectric facilities. The Company also is a leader in the
management of complex transmission and substation projects, including system
expansions and reliability upgrades.
Our experience in combustion turbine and combined-cycle power generation
dates back to the industry’s first applications of this technology. URS has
provided services for all types of combustion turbines manufactured for the
commercial market. We also have designed and constructed facilities for the full
range of combustion turbine applications, including simple-cycle, combined-cycle,
cogeneration, dual-fuel firing, repowering, baseload and peaking operations.
As a prime contractor to the U.S. nuclear industry since its inception, URS is
currently supporting new generation technologies, as well as the emerging small
modular reactor market. We also perform major modifications and component
replacement projects to extend the operational life and increase generating
capacity at existing facilities, and we offer specialized services to enhance safety
at nuclear plants.
To help operators of coal-fired power plants meet increasingly stringent air
quality regulations, URS applies and installs a variety of clean air technologies to
reduce plant emissions. Through our Advatech joint venture, we have developed
technology to help reduce sulfur dioxide and other emissions using a unique
double contact flow scrubber system. We also provide a proprietary SBS
Injection™ technology for sulfur trioxide emissions control.

REPRESENTATIVE PROJECTS
Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge (New Haven, Connecticut)
URS provided design services for the replacement of the Pearl Harbor
Memorial Bridge for the Connecticut Department of Transportation. The
extradosed prestressed bridge is the first of its kind to be constructed in
the United States. The new bridge, which commemorates the attack on
Pearl Harbor, crosses the Quinnipiac River with a span of 515 feet and will
accommodate 10 lanes of traffic. It is the centerpiece of Connecticut’s $2.2
billion I-95 New Haven Harbor Crossing Corridor Improvement Program.
Sellafield Nuclear Complex (Cumbria, England)
A URS-led consortium manages and operates the Sellafield nuclear complex
in North West England on behalf of the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning
Authority. Sellafield is one of the most complex nuclear sites in the world
and the largest nuclear decommissioning project in the United Kingdom. Our
work includes the cleanup of legacy waste buildings, decontamination and
decommissioning, spent fuel reprocessing, waste management and new
construction projects.
Hoover Dam (Las Vegas, Nevada)
In 1931, a URS legacy company led the consortium that constructed the
726-foot-high Hoover Dam across the Colorado River. As the largest dam
of its time, construction of the Hoover Dam required innovative construction
and safety techniques and was completed more than two years ahead of
schedule. Today, Hoover Dam stands as a National Historic Landmark and has
been rated by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of America’s
Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders.
SAGD Facilities and Cogeneration Plant (Alberta, Canada)
For a major oil sands development project, URS is providing construction,
module fabrication, construction and pre-commissioning services for steam
assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) facilities. We also have provided design,
construction and commissioning for a natural gas-fired cogeneration plant,
which generates steam for the SAGD facilities. Our work has included well
pads and water treatment facilities, construction of the desulfurization unit
and ongoing maintenance services.

Kennedy Space Center (Cape Canaveral, Florida)
URS performs a wide range of services for NASA at Kennedy Space Center
(KSC). In addition to supporting launch activities, our engineers, technicians
and scientists provide services for daily operations at KSC. Our work includes
operating and maintaining facilities, transportation systems, utilities and
equipment at the site. We also manage environmental and health and safety
functions to help maintain compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital (Grand Rapids, Michigan)
For the new Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, URS provided engineering,
interior, landscape and sustainability design, as well as architectural
consulting. The $286 million, 14-floor hospital is 464,000 square feet, has
206 beds and features an outdoor garden area and floor-to-ceiling windows.
It also features artwork created by children along with local artists. Designed
to meet the LEED Gold certification for environmental quality, the facility has
become an icon of form and function in the Spectrum Health medical complex.
BHP Billiton, Olympic Dam Tailings Storage (Roxby Downs, Australia)
Under a contract with BHP Billiton, URS designed a multimillion-dollar tailings
facility for the Olympic Dam and provided procurement and construction
management services for the facility. The project impoundment is an
upstream-raised ring dike, with an initial area of approximately 105 acres and
a height of more than 98 feet. It stores mineral processing by-product tailings
for copper, gold, silver and uranium.
Albian Sands Bitumen Extraction Mine (Alberta, Canada)
At the Albian Sands mine, URS provided construction management, module
fabrication and field construction services for a froth treatment facility and
storage tank farm. The work included fabrication of pipe racks and process
equipment modules, which were then transported and assembled on location.
URS also provided site preparation, foundations, installation of mechanical
piping, process equipment and buildings, as well as electrical systems and
instrumentation.
Olmsted Dam (Olmsted, Illinois)
URS is working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to construct a 2,700-foot-
long dam across the lower Ohio River, providing engineering and construction
services. Our work includes assembling segments of the dam, each
weighing more than 3,500 tons, in an onsite casting yard and moving them
onto a foundation in the swiftly flowing river. URS’ approach ensures that
marine traffic on the busy waterway is not interrupted and minimizes impacts
on the environment.
West Coast Route Modernization (United Kingdom)
In the United Kingdom, URS provided design services for the West Coast
Route Modernization program—a major upgrade of the principal railway linking
London, Birmingham, the North West and Glasgow. One of Europe’s largest
rail renewal projects and one of the most challenging projects of its kind in
the world, the modernization program has led to increased capacity for both
freight and passenger trains, as well as faster rail speeds.
Miller Plant Flue Gas Desulfurization (Quinton, Alabama)
Through our Advatech joint venture, URS provided engineering and
construction services for the installation of flue gas desulfurization systems
to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions at Alabama Power’s Miller Plant.
Working as an integrated team with our client, we developed a streamlined
expediting and quality program for critical equipment. The technology installed
at the plant can reduce SO2 emissions by as much as 98 percent. The project
was named “Best Coal-Fired Project of 2011” by Power Engineering magazine.
Cloud Computing
URS is helping the U.S. Department of Defense to reduce costs and
increase operating efficiencies by transitioning critical data to cloud-based
environments. Our innovative, cost-effective solutions meet federal government
security standards while providing 24/7 access to software, platforms and
IT infrastructure. URS and its partners recently received federal approval for
Fedcloud.com, a portal that can be used by government agencies to quickly
procure reliable, scalable and secure computing resources.
