WHO WE ARE
Mission Statement Ursuline Academy is an independent Catholic school that provides young women with a college-preparatory education rooted in the traditions and values
of St. Angela Merici. As a community, we prioritize:
excellence in education
respect for the uniqueness of the individual
development of the whole person
emphasis on community and family spirit
cultivation of leadership qualities
commitment to serving others, as embodied in our motto, Serviam: “I will serve.”
Ursuline Education Vision Statement Ursuline education is rooted in a tradition of formation and innovation which dates back to 1535, when St. Angela Merici founded the Ursuline Sisters in
Brescia, Italy.
Inspired by the call of the Gospel and challenged by the needs around her, Angela reached out in service and love to rich and poor alike. A true educator,
she sought to “draw out” the giftedness and potential in each person. Her writings offer a philosophy of formation and education which is personal,
attuned to the needs and situation of each individual, and committed to equity and to the promotion of self-discipline through encouragement rather than
compulsion, and all of this in an atmosphere of unity, mutual love, and respect.
Ursuline Sisters and their collaborators in ministry continue today the approach to Catholic education and formation which draws its life and vision from
Angela’s spirit and philosophy.
Core Values Education for Excellence:
Providing strong extracurricular programs which are informed by Catholic values and which prepare students for life-long learning
Developing practical skills for the 21st century which include analysis, decision making knowledge of technology, judgment and critical thinking
Providing ongoing educational/formational opportunities for faculty, staff, board members, and parents
Developing leadership skills for men and women which promote the creation of a more just and equitable society
Developing within each student the capacity to stand with others with a compassionate heart
6
Respect for the Uniqueness of the Individual:
Accepting the challenges that uniqueness brings
Insuring that teaching approaches and application of policies reflect consideration of and respect for students’ unique needs and situations
Developing an attitude of celebration for the gifts and contributions of all
Encouraging each person to discover, develop and share his/her own gifts and talents, especially gifts of leadership
Development of the Whole Person:
Providing programs which address the total development of the person: aesthetic, emotional, intellectual, physical, social, spiritual/moral
Providing curricular programs which are informed by our Catholic faith and our Ursuline tradition
Emphasis on Community/Family Spirit:
Fostering a nurturing environment
Developing an atmosphere of hospitality which welcomes and supports people of diverse academic , economic, racial, cultural and religious
backgrounds
Involving in an integral way our alumnae, parents, students, faculty, staff, board members
Building a faith community
Promoting school spirit
Commitment to Serving Others:
Recognizing that all relationships are rooted in our relationship with God which leads to service of others and sharing of the earth’s resources
Fostering the spirit of Serviam through prayer, liturgy, curriculum, service programs so that it permeates all areas of school activity as a way of
life
Calling forth consciousness of and sensitivity to the needs of others, both locally and globally
Encouraging all who are involved with the school community to model the spirit of Serviam, to “go the extra mile.”
School Anthem St. Angela Merici, tender mother true,
We sing your praise from sea to sea,
Our loyalty pledge anew!
Serviam! Serviam!
Our shield with hope is bright!
Serviam! Serviam!
Ursuline hearts unite!

Partnership with Parents Ursuline Academy works in partnership with parents in support of our students’ education. For this partnership to succeed, it is necessary that parents
trust that the administrators, faculty and staff of Ursuline Academy are working to help students develop intellectually, morally, athletically, and socially.
Parents can best contribute to their daughters’ success at Ursuline Academy by establishing schoolwork as a priority at home; by staying informed about
events and developments at Ursuline Academy; by ensuring students’ prompt and reliable attendance; and by communicating with faculty and staff in a
timely and respectful manner.
Please note that parental cooperation is essential for the welfare of the students of Ursuline Academy. If, in the opinion of the administration, parental
behaviors seriously interfere with the teaching/learning process, the school may require parents to withdraw their daughter and may sever the family’s
relationship with Ursuline Academy.
Once parents and students have read the Parent-Student Handbook, they are asked to print and sign the last page of this document,
indicating that they agree to abide by the policies of Ursuline Academy. Signed statements of commitment should be turned in to the
office by September 9, 2013.

Attendance Policies
School Hours and Supervision of Students Ursuline Academy opens to students at 7:00 am. With the exception of Thursday mornings, homeroom begins at 8:05 am, when attendance is taken.
Academic classes end at 2:30 pm, at which time students are dismissed. On Thursdays, a Club/Extra-help period begins at 8:05, followed by homeroom
at 8:47. At all times, students are expected to follow the rules and regulations of Ursuline Academy.
The school office is open between 7:00 am and 3:30 pm.
The library opens at 7:30 am and offers supervised study until 4:00 pm.
10
Between 3:00 am and 5:00 pm, there is adult supervision in the tea room.
Between 4:00 and 6:00 pm, there is an adult presence in the foyer.
Absences Classroom attendance is an essential part of the student’s course of study. Regular and punctual attendance for all scheduled activities, including
homeroom, study halls, Mass, and assemblies is required of all students.
If a student will be absent, her parent or guardian must report her absence by 8:15 am. Two methods of reporting absence are available. First, parents
may call the attendance line (781-326-6161 extension 104) to verbally report the student’s absence. Alternatively, parents may email
[email protected] to report the absence. Please be sure to report absences on every day that a student is not present in school. Upon the
student’s return to school, parents must submit a handwritten note confirming the dates of the school days on which the student was absent.
For any absence due to illness that exceeds three days, a physician’s note to return to class is required.
A student absent for more than three classes in any subject during any quarter without a doctor’s report or other valid written explanation will be asked to
meet with her guidance counselor regarding her academic standing and the types of support she might need to ensure good attendance. If a student’s rate
of absenteeism is deemed excessive, parents and the student will be required to meet with members of the administration and commit to an attendance
contract. If parents and student do not uphold the terms of the attendance contract, the student may be required to withdraw from Ursuline Academy.
If a student will miss school because of college visits, extracurricular activities, or family travel (highly discouraged), parents must provide information
about the duration of the expected absence in advance to the attendance line or to [email protected]. In addition, if a student is absent due
to serious illness or other extraordinary circumstances, she should consult her course pages on Blackboard Engage to stay up to date on all class
assignments.
Tardiness Any student who arrives late for homeroom must present a note from a parent upon arrival and secure a tardy slip from the office before she will be
admitted to class. Students who accumulate 3 unexcused tardies in a quarter will be assigned detention.
During the day, students who are late for any class period must secure a tardy slip in order to be admitted to class. Students must obtain any and all
missed work resulting from tardiness.
More than three unexcused tardies in a quarter will result in detention and a call to the student’s parents. If student drivers are tardy more than three
times, their parking privileges may be suspended.
11
Make-up Work In all cases, students are responsible for obtaining and completing missed work resulting from absences. Students should check course pages on
Blackboard Engage for assignments before contacting teachers. Opportunities to make up tests/quizzes will be provided at the discretion of teachers.
Early Dismissal Given the importance of class time for students’ academic success, Ursuline Academy requests that, whenever possible, appointments be made after
school, on Saturdays, during Thursday club period, or during vacations. Students requesting dismissal must follow this procedure:
1. A note stating the date, time and reason for dismissal must be brought to the office during homeroom.
2. Only the principal or assistant principal are authorized to dismiss a student for any reason.
3. Students granted dismissal must report to the office before leaving the building. If a student returns to
school after her appointment, she must also report to the office before returning to class.
If students neglect to bring a note for dismissal, an email from a parent may suffice. Such emails should be sent to [email protected].
Transportation Bus Transportation The town of Dedham provides transportation to Dedham students who live 1.5 miles or more from the school. Students must pay a user fee. Bus transportation to 25 local communities is provided through a partnership with Catholic Memorial High School. Information regarding
schedules and fees may be obtained by calling the Business Office at Ursuline (ext. 132).
Ursuline reserves the right to remain open even if Catholic Memorial cancels school due to inclement weather. In such an instance, parents will be
required to provide transportation. Students must obey all bus regulations. Courtesy and orderly conduct is expected at all times. Security cameras are installed in all buses serving
the Catholic Memorial routes; students are asked to alert the assistant principal of any behavioral issues on the bus.
Automobiles Ursuline Academy is located in a residential area; drivers to Ursuline must respect and be considerate of Ursuline’s neighbors. Lowder Street is a
one way street with a speed limit of 25 mph. The speed limit on campus is 10 mph. Careful driving procedures must be observed at all times. Faculty parking is located in the area near the convent gate and in front of the school.
Student drivers are not assigned specific spaces. However, student parking is restricted to the lower lot. Students must register their
cars with the school and be issued a parking permit for a cost of $25.00. This permit is valid for as long as a student remains
enrolled at Ursuline Academy.
12
Once students arrive in the parking area, they must enter the building immediately. Students may not return to their vehicles until
dismissal without specific permission from a faculty or staff member. They must sign out in the office and sign back in when they return.
Vehicles on the property of Ursuline Academy may be searched by the administration at any time.
The school does not assume responsibility for theft or damage to vehicles parked on school grounds.
Any careless or reckless driving on the campus may result in suspension of on-campus driving privileges. A student driver who is
frequently tardy for homeroom may have her driving privileges suspended.
Cars that drop off/pick up students should not block Lowder Street or neighboring driveways.
Tuition and Fees Ursuline Academy receives no financial aid from the Archdiocese of Boston or the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and thus depends upon the
prompt payment of tuition in order to operate. The actual cost to educate an Ursuline Academy student is much more than the tuition charge. The
difference is made up through the Annual Fund drive and a variety of fundraising activities including the Brescia Ball and the Fore the Girls
Tournament. Please participate in and support these endeavors.
General Charges for 2013-2014
Registration fee $300 (new students only)
Tuition $15,650
Graduation fee $200 (seniors only)
Payment Plans Ursuline uses the FACTS Tuition Management (www.factsmgt.com) to manage its tuition receivables.
Sanctions 1. A late payment fee $ 125/ $75/ $25 for the 2/4/10 payment plan (respectively) may be applied 15 or more days after the due date.
2. No student will be allowed to take mid-term and final exams until all obligations to the school have been settled.
3 Students whose accounts are more than 30 days past due may not participate in extracurricular activities.
4. No senior will be allowed to participate in graduation activities unless all bills are paid in full.
Refund Policy
13
There are no refunds of deposits or fees paid. A full refund of 2013-2014 tuition payments will be made provided the Business Office has received a
written withdrawal notice and request for a refund on or before July 1, 2013.
Questions regarding these policies should be addressed to the Academy’s Business Office.
Withholding Student Records for Non-Payment of Tuition
In the event of a student’s withdrawal, transfer or expulsion, parents are responsible for full payment of tuition and fees. Ursuline Academy reserves the
right to withhold report cards and student records until tuition and fees have been paid in full. By signing the Statement of Commitment, you are
authorizing the school to withhold report cards and other records until tuition and fees are paid in full.
For more information about tuition and fees, please see: http://www.ursulineacademy.net/page.cfm?p=500.

School Cancellations
Inclement Weather In the event of hazardous weather conditions, notice of school cancellations will be announced on WBZ TV-4, WCVB TV-5, WHDH TV-7 and FOX-25
as well as via telephone alerts from Blackboard.com. If power permits, Ursuline will also post a scrolling cancellation message at
www.ursulineacademy.net. When Dedham Public Schools are closed for snow, Ursuline will also close. However, Ursuline may remain open even
when Boston Public Schools are closed. Ursuline students commute from across greater Boston and the South Shore, and the safety of all students will
be taken into account when closing decisions are made. Power permitting, if school is closed for two consecutive days or more, teachers will post
assignments on Blackboard Engage for which students will be responsible (again, power permitting).
ACADEMICS
Academic Requirements for Admission Ursuline Academy is a college-preparatory school for young women in grades seven through twelve. Selection of students for admission is based solely
on academic ability and promise. No person shall be denied admission on the basis of race, sexual orientation, socio-economic background or physical
disability. An entrance exam is required of each student requesting admission to grades 7 through 11.
Academic Requirements for Graduation, Grades 9-12 The minimum requirements for graduation for Grade 9 through 12 are: 4 credits in Religion
4 credits in English
4 credits in Mathematics
3 credits in World Language (French, Spanish or Latin)
3 credits in History/Social Studies
3 credits in Science
1 credit in Fine Arts
2 or 3 electives
Academic Requirements for Grades 7-8 Students in grades 7-8 are required to take the following courses: Religious Studies
English Literature
16
English Grammar
Mathematics
Science
Social Studies
Art and Music
Technology
Foreign language (French, Spanish or Latin)
Physical Education
Requirements for Promotion to Grade 9 In order for a student to be promoted to grade 9, she must maintain good academic and social standing that ensures success in high school. Should a grade
7 student be identified as needing academic and/or social support beyond the ability of Ursuline Academy to provide, parents and students will meet with
the guidance office to create a written plan (that may include the student’s enrollment in a summer program) intended to help her improve in the area of
concern. Throughout the eighth grade year, the student’s academic and/or social progress will be closely monitored and guidance will meet quarterly with
the parents. If the student continues to be unable to meet her academic obligations or to interact appropriately with peers or faculty at the end of grade 8,
Ursuline may require that the student enroll in a different high school.
Academic Honors Honors are awarded quarterly in keeping with Ursuline Academy’s goal to celebrate students’ academic achievements throughout the year. Separate
honors are not awarded for either midyear or final averages. A year-end average is calculated by adding the final averages of each course and dividing
that sum by the total number of courses. The resulting figure is carried out two decimal places. Since grades are automatically rounded each quarter,
neither the year-end nor the cumulative high school average is rounded up.
At the end of senior year, a final average is determined by adding the averages from each academic year and dividing by those years. Only a senior
student whose cumulative average is 87.00 or higher will be awarded graduation honors. A final four-year average of 86.99 will not be rounded up and
will not qualify for graduation honors.
Quarterly Academic Honors Requirements First Honors: An average of at least 94 with no subjects below 90
Second Honors: An average of at least 90 with no subject below 85
Honorable Mention: An average of at least 87 with no subject below 80
Graduation Honors
17
The same logic used for determining honors on a yearly basis is applied when calculating graduation honors. Final averages are added and divided by the
number of years a student attended Ursuline Academy. An average of 87.00 qualifies for graduation honors, but an average of 86.99 does not qualify.
Final year averages earned at other schools or via on-line courses will not be factored into a final average for graduation honors.
Calculation of Valedictorian and Salutatorian Designations After all senior grades have been calculated an adjusted GPA is determined by converting number grades according to the chart below. An average of 100
in a College Prep class converts to 4.6. An average of 100 in an Honors class converts to 5.1. An average of 100 in an AP class converts to 5.6. An
average of 96 in a College Prep class converts to a 4.2. An average of 96 in an Honors class converts to a 4.7. An average of 96 in an Advanced
Placement class converts to a 5.2. All grades earned are converted to the GPA equivalent, totaled and divided by the number of classes that count toward
the GPA. The highest adjusted GPA is awarded the designation of valedictorian and the second highest adjusted GPA is awarded the designation of
salutatorian. Strength of academic schedule is a factor in this calculation. While grades earned at other academic institutions including grades earned in
on-line courses count toward graduation credits, they are not considered when calculating valedictorian or salutatorian. Calculations begin in grade 9.
Average GPA GPA GPA
College Prep Honors Advanced Placement 94-100 4.0-4.6 4.5-5.1 5.0-5.6
90-93 3.6-3.9 4.1-4.4 4.6-4.9
87-89 3.3-3.5 3.8-4.0 4.3-4.5
83-86 2.9-3.2 3.4-3.7 3.9-4.2
80-82 2.6-2.8 3.1-3.3 3.6-3.8
77-79 2.3-2.5 2.8-3.0 3.3-3.5
73-76 1.9-2.2 2.4-2.7 2.9-3.2
70-72 1.6-1.8 2.1-2.3 2.6-2.8
68-69 1.0-1.5 1.5-2.0 2.0-2.5
Below 68 0 0 0
In the event that there is a tie for valedictorian, co-valedictorians will be named. In such a circumstance, a salutatorian will not be named.
Communication of Academic Information via Blackboard Engage: In order to facilitate communication between school and home, major assignments, such as tests and term papers, will be posted either weekly or
at the beginning of each marking period by each teacher in Blackboard Engage. Teachers will post grades on Blackboard Engage every two
weeks.
Exams
18
Ursuline Academy gives a cumulative examination of approximately two hours for students in grades 9 -12 in each course at the end of each
semester. Students in grades 7 and 8 sit for a one and a half hour exam in all courses with the exception of foreign languages. Final projects or
papers may be assigned in lieu of a final exam at teachers’ discretion.
Homework Ursuline Academy will not assign homework over major vacations such as Christmas, February and April vacations. Long term assignments will
always be due BEFORE vacation. Since Advanced Placement classes must complete respective curricula prior to May exams, there may be
homework exceptions in AP classes.
Progress Reports Electronic progress reports are made available to parents via Blackboard Engage halfway through each quarter. The dates for publication of
progress reports appear on the school calendar.
Failures A student who receives a failing mark (67 or below) in a single final course grade at the end of the school year must attend either a public or
private summer school, or receive tutoring from a certified teacher. A student who fails two or more subjects for the year will be required to
attend summer school as well as to receive additional services at the discretion of the administration. No senior will be allowed to graduate with an
academic failure on her record.
Eligibility for Extracurricular Activities During any given marking period, if a student is failing a subject she will be suspended from an activity or sport until she has attained a passing
mark. If she is in danger of failing a subject, the student will sign a probation agreement and her work will be closely monitored. Special
consideration will not be given to extra credit projects; grades must be based on assessments given to the whole class. If a student is failing a
subject at the time of sports try-outs, she may participate in try-outs but will not be able to practice or play until she has attained a passing grade.
Contacting a Faculty Member Parents concerned about a student’s academic progress must consult with the relevant teacher or teachers directly. All teachers may be reached by
email or voicemail, and will make every effort to respond to a request for an appointment within a business day. Conferences with teachers must
be arranged in advance.
Contacting a Guidance Counselor The guidance office is available for parents who wish to discuss strategies for resolving concerns about a student’s academic or emotional
development. If, after meeting with a teacher and a guidance counselor, there are still unresolved questions, an appointment may be made with the
principal, Mrs. Keaney, by calling the principal’s administrative assistant, Mrs. Thorn, at extension 100. Appointments with Mrs. Keaney must be
made in advance.
19
Academic Dishonesty Ursuline Academy requires that students seek to meet moral and academic standards in keeping with our stated mission. Each student should always
submit her own work on every assignment. (i.e., homework, tests, quizzes, papers and projects). While collaboration is permitted on certain projects at
teachers’ discretion, it is the student’s responsibility to seek clarification as needed on teachers’ project collaboration policies.
Plagiarism is the act of taking another’s words, ideas or printed materials and presenting them as one’s own work or failing to cite a source correctly. It is
the student’s responsibility to learn and to be vigilant regarding the correct methods of citing sources. Plagiarism is a serious offense and its consequences
are severe. The penalties for plagiarism may include: loss of credit, suspension or expulsion. Students who hold offices or are members of campus
organizations may lose their privileges of membership as stated in the rules and regulations of such organizations.
Online Courses On occasion, students may elect a combination of courses that, although scheduled to be offered at Ursuline, cannot be accommodated in a student’s daily
schedule. In this instance, Ursuline will pay for the student to take a comparable on-line course.
Ursuline will ensure that any student who takes an on-line course is supervised in the library during the student’s unscheduled class period and that the
student will have the option of using either a library computer or a personal computer during that time.
Ursuline will not pay for on-line courses that are not offered at Ursuline due to lack of enrollment; moreover, Ursuline will not pay for courses that
Ursuline offers and that fit within the student's daily schedule. Ursuline will not pay for on-line courses for girls who are admitted off-cycle in any
discipline.
If an Ursuline student enrolls in an approved on-line course, the course will count towards graduation credits. The grade earned in an on-line course,
however, will not be factored into a student's grade point average.
In rare circumstances and with approval from faculty, a student may take an on-line course for enrichment. This course would be over and above the six
major subjects required by Ursuline. In this circumstance, the course would neither count toward graduation credits nor would the grade earned be
factored into a student’s grade point average. The student’s guidance counselor, however, would include the on-line course in college recommendations
and would provide a separate transcript from the on-line institution in all application materials. Ursuline will not pay for any on-line enrichment courses.
The Ursuline Academy administration reserves the right to deny payment for any on-line course for a student that does not fit within the parameters of the
above described acceptable alternatives to a course offered at Ursuline.
Report Cards Report cards are issued quarterly. Hard copies are mailed to students’ homes. Please report changes of address promptly.

SAFETY AND SECURITY
Procedures for Visitors
Ursuline Academy values parental involvement and community support. While visitors are always welcome, safety is a priority.
Visitors to Ursuline Academy must enter the building through the main door and proceed immediately to the school secretary’s office. Visitors must sign
in, state their business, and be given a Visitor’s Pass, which should be displayed for the duration of the visit. Upon completion of the visit, the visitor
must sign out and return the pass. Visitors may not interrupt classes and must schedule all teacher conferences in advance.
Any student who wishes to invite another girl to school for one day or part of a day must give the assistant principal at least three days’ notice of the
upcoming visit. Both the student and the guest must submit written permission from their parents/guardians for the visit. The guest’s letter of permission
must include her parents’ names and emergency phone number(s); the school nurse will contact the visitor’s parent or guardian to ascertain if the visitor
has health issues about which she should be aware and to request immunization information. The visitor should dress modestly and appropriately: jeans,
shorts and short skirts are not permitted.
Emergency Procedures
Fire Drills Fire drills are conducted four times per year. A sign indicating the exit to be used is posted in each room. Students should be silent while exiting the
building as quickly as possible.
Lockdown Procedures Lockdown drills are conducted several times per year. At the beginning of the school year, and at regular subsequent intervals, students are instructed in
lockdown procedures. These include closing and locking classroom doors, covering windows, and taking positions away from windows. Visitors who
are on campus during lockdown drills must participate in drills with all other members of the community. Visitors will not be admitted while lockdown
drills are in progress. Lockdowns are signaled by an announcement over the intercom and by a long blast on the school bell. When a lockdown ends, it
will be announced and signaled by the bell again.
Shelter in Place Certain circumstances may warrant that a “shelter in place” order be given. In this case, students will be asked to remain in their classrooms until an
administrator announces the lifting of the order.
Internal Evacuation Should it be necessary to centralize students in locations within the building, the gym and/or the interior corridors will be used for this purpose. Students will be directed to proceed in an orderly fashion to a predetermined location and to wait for the all-clear.
21
External Evacuation In the event that students need to leave campus by foot due to emergency, they will be directed by faculty or staff members to predetermined off-campus
gathering areas. Parents will be contacted via Blackboard Connect and given information regarding where to pick students up. Parents should not come
to the Ursuline campus if an external evacuation has been ordered.
Emergency Communication with Administration During off hours, emergency matters involving safety, serious illness or injury should be communicated via email to [email protected].
Please provide contact information in the body of the email and a brief description of the nature of the emergency.
ATHLETICS
The athletic program at Ursuline Academy includes:
Fall: Cross Country, Field Hockey, Soccer, Swimming & Diving, Volleyball
Winter: Basketball, Ice Hockey, Indoor Track, Ski
Spring: Golf, Lacrosse, Softball, Tennis, Track
High school sports provide a venue to learn about the values of competitiveness, honesty, integrity, teamwork, and most importantly, how to deal with
success and failure. Sports are a valuable training ground for what a student will face when her school days are over.
All expectations of proper conduct that apply during school hours are in effect on playing fields, pertaining to athletes and student spectators alike.
To participate in interscholastic athletics, a student must have a passing grade in every subject and maintain her academic standing throughout the entire
season. In rare instances, a student with a failing grade may obtain a contract which will allow her to try out for a sport. However, if she makes the team,
she will not be permitted to participate in practices or games until she can provide proof that her grade has been brought up to a passing level. The
decision on whether to “carry” such a student until such time as she is eligible to participate is at the discretion of coaches.
In order to practice or play, student athletes must be in school for that school day. No athlete is exempt from P.E. Class; athletes who cannot participate in
P.E. will not be allowed to participate in after school athletics.
For thorough information about the athletics program, please see the complete athletic handbook at
http://www.ursulineacademy.net/uploaded/4_Athletics/documents/Handbook/Ursuline_Academy_Athletics_Handbook.pdf.

CAMPUS MINISTRY
Overview Guided by Catholic tradition, the counsels of the Ursuline foundress, St. Angela Merici, and the Ursuline philosophy of Serviam (“I will serve”), Campus
Ministry at Ursuline Academy seeks to create an environment permeated with Gospel values and to enrich our community with a greater depth of
contemplation and participation in Catholic social action. Students’ spiritual life is nourished in a variety of ways throughout the year:
Required community service hours
Daily prayer
Community prayer services
Eucharistic Masses with Choral Group, Liturgical Dance, and praise band ministries
Peer Minister-led class retreats
Student service in the local community through Mission Day, the Thanksgiving Food Drive, Christmas in the City, Clothe-A-Child Project, and
Belle of the Ball Prom Dress Donation programs
Student service through community organizations such as the Dedham Food Pantry, My Brother’s Keeper, the Romero Center in New Jersey and
Ursuline Education Services sponsored service trips.
The Campus Ministry Office welcomes all suggestions for service projects and will consider all submissions carefully. Please submit suggestions at:
https://www.ursulineacademy.net/page.cfm?p=612&LockSSL=true. In most instances, suggestions will not be able to incorporated within the same
academic year since service trips require the coordination of staff and faculty and have to be planned in advance. Thank you for your continued prayers
and work in support of our mission of Serviam. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Mary-Kate Tracy in the Campus Ministry office.
Service Hours In keeping with Ursuline's motto, Serviam, and the Christian call to help others, each student is required to perform some type of community service in
keeping with her abilities and interests. Our goal is that each student comes to know the joy of giving others her most valuable gift– herself– and one of
her most precious resources, her time.
Expectations Grades 7, 8 & 9: 30 hours of service per year
Grades 10, 11: 40 hours of service per year
Grade 12: 40 hours of service per year, plus an additional 150 hours of service performed during the Senior Service Project
The following list is offered as a stimulus for thinking about possibilities for service.
teach or assist in a school and/or a CCD program
visit the elderly or shut-ins
23
coach an athletic team
transport the elderly to grocery store, church, doctor, etc.
work for an organization, e.g. Pulse, St. Vincent de Paul, Samaritans, Por Cristo, CYO, etc.
work at a food pantry
babysitting during Sunday Mass
school projects
work with the handicapped, or special needs children or adults
Contract Each student must sign the Serviam Program Contract and find her own service projects, keeping in mind her interests, availability and site locations.
The contract must be signed by the student and her parents.
What Counts as Service? Service is defined as:
help given without pay or other compensation outside the context of a career-directed internship
help given to those who could not afford to pay
help given which benefits people directly
We encourage student creativity in finding projects for service and strongly suggest that students look for a way to serve that allows them to interact with
others in a way that improves the quality of life of those being served.
Service Log The service log form is available from the Guidance Office. The student records the dates and the hours of service. The supervisor or agency confirms
the recorded information. Completed service logs must be handed into each student’s guidance counselor on or before June 1.
Senior Serviam Project Every year, Ursuline Academy Seniors spend their final weeks at Ursuline in service to others as part of their graduation requirement. This year, each
senior will provide 150 hours of service. These hours may be completed on a schedule that the service organization and the student find mutually
agreeable between the end of classes in April and Class Day at the end of May.
All seniors are expected to research and commit to a non-profit organization that provides service or care to underserved, at risk, or especially vulnerable
members of society. The Serviam Project is not intended to provide career experience. Rather, it is intended to help students expand their horizons and
to enable them to provide active assistance to persons (or animals) in real need.
During the course of service, all seniors will log onto the Ursuline Academy website and enter a twice weekly blog on the Senior Service discussion
board. The blog entries will serve as an online journal for all seniors that will also be shared with the faculty.
24
Seniors can organize their 150 hours of service on any schedule that conforms to the range of dates above; seniors should factor in AP obligations,
appointments, and sports/drama commitments when planning their service schedules.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Bullying
Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan As a community, Ursuline Academy is committed to respect for the uniqueness of each individual, development of the whole person, and the fostering of
community and family spirit. As Catholics, we believe that all persons are created in the image and likeness of God and have dignity and worth.
Therefore, in accordance with its mission and in compliance with Massachusetts state law, Ursuline Academy does not tolerate any form of bullying,
disruption of the educational process, or any acts which create an intimidating, hostile or offensive school environment. This prohibition against bullying
applies to all students, employees and volunteers in the school building, on school property or at any time while representing the school, whether in
person or online, or while attending events at other schools.
The Ursuline Academy Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan set forth below is published in response to the recently enacted Massachusetts law
against bullying and is an integral part of our efforts to promote learning and to prevent behavior that can impede the learning process. The plan
represents Ursuline Academy’s comprehensive approach to addressing bullying, cyber-bullying and retaliation.
The Plan is consistent with broader protections at Ursuline Academy against discrimination, harassment, bullying and retaliation that appear in our
Parent-Student Handbook, our Faculty/Staff Handbook and our Athletic Handbook. It is important that this plan be understood by all members of the
Ursuline community. The principal will be responsible for the implementation and administration of the plan. Questions and concerns related to the plan
may be referred to the principal, the assistant principal, or the director of guidance.
Policy against bullying, cyber-bullying and retaliation Ursuline Academy will not tolerate any form of bullying or cyber-bullying, nor will we tolerate retaliation against any person who reports bullying,
provides information during an investigation of bullying, or who witnesses or has reliable information about bullying.
Bullying and cyber-bullying are prohibited on school grounds and at school sponsored events, activities, functions and programs. Bullying and cyber-
bullying also are prohibited on school transportation, including, but not limited to vehicles owned, leased or used by the school, and through the use of
technology or an electronic device owned, leased or used by the school.
In addition, bullying and cyber-bullying are prohibited at locations or on devices that are not owned, leased or used by the school, if the bullying creates a
hostile environment at school for a targeted student; infringes on the rights of a targeted student at school; or materially and substantially disrupts the
educational process or the orderly operation of the school.
25
Definitions of Bullying under the Law
The following definitions are drawn from the Massachusetts law against bullying.
Bullying: Bullying is defined as the repeated use by one or more students of a written, verbal, or electronic expression or a physical act or gesture or any
combination thereof, directed at a target that
Causes physical or emotional harm to the targeted student or damage to the targeted student’s property
Places the targeted student in reasonable fear of harm to herself or of damage to her property
Creates a hostile environment at school for the targeted student
Infringes on the rights of the targeted student at school
Materially and substantially disrupts the educational process or the orderly operation of the school
Cyber-bullying: Cyber-bullying is bullying through the use of technology or electronic devices such as telephones, cell phones, computers, and the
internet. It includes, but is not limited to, email, instant messages, text messages and internet postings, whether on a web page, in a blog, via social
media, or otherwise.
Hostile environment: A hostile environment is a situation in which bullying causes the school environment to be permeated with intimidation, ridicule or
insult that it is sufficiently severe or pervasive to alter the conditions of a student’s education.
Retaliation: Retaliation is any form of intimidation, reprisal or harassment directed against a student who reports bullying, provides information during an
investigation of bullying, or witnesses or has reliable information about bullying.
Legal definitions and school policy: Ursuline Academy reserves the right to uphold standards of behavior more strict than the legal definitions of bullying
may suggest. Ursuline Academy may intervene and respond to inappropriate verbal and physical conduct before a student has been subjected to bullying
as it is defined under the law. For example, although the law defines bullying as “repeated use” of certain expressions, acts and/or gestures, Ursuline
Academy reserves the right to apply disciplinary measures or other remedial action in a case of a single act, expression or gesture, if the school
determines that the action was sufficiently severe to warrant disciplinary measures or other remedial action or that the repetition of that expression, act, or
gesture might reasonably result in bullying as defined under the law.
Prevention of Bullying and Cyber-bullying Every member of the Ursuline community has the right to be treated with civility and respect. The Ursuline tradition emphasizes respect for the
individual and for individual difference, and teachers are clear in their expectations for student behavior. When necessary, parents are notified and asked
to reinforce standards for membership in the Ursuline Academy community.
Homeroom teachers use homeroom periods to ensure that students are well informed about what is expected of them and to reinforce positive conduct.
Special class meetings and guidance periods are held occasionally to discuss peer relationships and to empower students to take action if they feel
targeted or if they witness other students engaging in bullying or other unacceptable behavior. In addition, the Director of Athletics and the Director of Technology emphasize positive conduct and respect for others in their meetings with students and parents. A copy of the school anti-bullying/cyber-
bullying policy is issued to each coach at the beginning of the athletic season. Presentations at faculty meetings ensure that teachers and staff are well
26
informed with regard to these concerns. The administration and faculty recognize that it is essential that expectations for student conduct extend to
corridors, the locker and tea rooms, break, athletics and the like. Ursuline Academy strives to ensure that ample supervision is provided on academy
premises, including the corridors, locker and tea rooms and on school-provided transportation as well as at school-sponsored events.
Reports of bullying, cyber-bullying or retaliation Any student who is the target of bullying or cyber-bullying or who has witnessed an incident of bullying or cyber-bullying or otherwise has relevant
information about bullying or cyber-bullying prohibited by this policy is strongly encouraged to report the matter orally or in writing to the principal,
assistant principal or guidance director, or to any other faculty or staff member with whom the student is comfortable speaking. Also, any student who is
subject to retaliation in violation of this policy or who knows of another student who has been subject to retaliation is urged to report it as soon as
possible.
A parent of a student who is the target of bullying or cyber-bullying or of a student who has witnessed or otherwise has relevant information about
bullying or cyber-bullying is strongly urged to notify the principal, assistant principal or guidance director promptly. Furthermore, any parent who has
herself or himself witnessed bullying or cyber-bullying or has relevant information concerning such an incident is strongly urged to come forward to the
principal or member of the administration. A parent should also report any incident of retaliation to the principal or administration.
Any member of the faculty or staff of Ursuline Academy who witnesses or otherwise becomes aware of bullying or cyber-bullying in violation of this
policy or who becomes aware of retaliation against a student who reported information concerning a violation of this policy is required to report it
immediately to the principal or other member of the administration. There are to be no exceptions. A member of the faculty or staff may not make
promises of confidentiality to a student or parent who informs her/him of an allegation of bullying, cyber-bullying or retaliation.
Given the seriousness with which Ursuline Academy approaches bullying and related topics, Ursuline Academy requests that no report or allegation of
bullying be made anonymously. Reports made anonymously are extremely difficult to investigate and could be used unjustly. While we fully understand
the concerns that parents, students or staff might have, we encourage all members of the community to bear in mind that Ursuline Academy takes its
policy against retaliation seriously. Also, while Ursuline Academy cannot promise strict confidentiality, because information must be shared in order to
conduct an effective investigation, Ursuline releases information concerning complaints of bullying, cyber-bullying and retaliation only on a legitimate
need-to-know basis.
Responding to a report of bullying, cyber-bullying or retaliation
Preliminary Considerations When a complaint of bullying, cyber-bullying or retaliation is brought to the attention of a member of the administration, an assessment is made as to
whether any initial steps need to be taken to protect the well-being of students and to prevent disruption of their learning environment while the
investigation is being conducted.
27
Obligation to Notify Parents It is the policy of Ursuline Academy to notify the parents of any student who is an alleged target of bullying, cyber-bullying or retaliation and the parents
of any student who has been accused of engaging in such behavior promptly after a complaint has been made.
Investigation Once a complaint has been brought to a member of the administration, an impartial investigation is conducted. That investigation may include, but will
not necessarily be limited to, interviews with the person who made the complaint, with the student who was the target of the alleged bullying, cyber-
bullying or retaliation, with the person or persons against whom the complaint was made, and with any students, faculty, staff or other persons who
witnessed or who may otherwise have relevant information about the alleged incident. Depending on the circumstances, the person conducting the
investigation may choose to consult with other teachers and/or guidance counselors.
Resolution, Notification and Follow-up Following the investigation, the principal or other administrator will determine whether and to what extent the allegation of bullying, cyber-bullying or
retaliation has been substantiated. If it is determined that the policy set forth in this plan has been violated, the principal will determine what disciplinary
action and/or other remedial action is appropriate and how it will be implemented. This action may include, but is not limited to, conferences with
students and parents, the requirement of outside counseling, or detention, suspension, or expulsion as warranted by the severity of the situation.
The goal of an investigation and any disciplinary or other remedial process is to correct the situation to the extent reasonably possible and to prevent there
being a repetition of the incident or to prevent the student or students targeted and others who participated in the investigation from being subject to
retaliation.
In appropriate circumstances, such as when a crime may have been committed or a child may have been subject to abuse or neglect of the type that is
reportable under section 51A of Massachusetts laws, law enforcement or another appropriate government agency may be notified.
Upon completion of the investigation, the principal or the administrator who conducted the investigation will meet individually with the student or
students who were the target of the alleged incident and the student or students against whom the complaint was made and their parents to report the
results of the investigation and, where disciplinary or other corrective action is deemed appropriate, to inform the parties of the steps that will be taken to
correct the situation. The amount of information provided in these meetings may be limited by confidentiality laws protecting student records.
Follow-up contacts will be made with any student found to have been targeted in violation of this policy and her parents to inquire as to whether there
have been any further incidents.
Conclusion The goals of this plan are to prevent bullying and cyber-bullying among our students; encourage students and their parents to have confidence in Ursuline
Academy’s procedures; to come forward promptly whenever a student is subject to conduct that is prohibited by this or any other school policy; and to
implement appropriate discipline and other corrective measures when they are found to be warranted.
28
Harassment Ursuline Academy is committed to creating a school climate that is supportive and respectful of all school community members and conducive to serious
learning. Therefore, harassment of any kind, including harassment based on race, gender, sexual orientation, age, or ethnic and religious background is a
serious violation of school policy and will not be tolerated. Any incidents of harassment should be reported immediately to a counselor or administrator.
Sexual Harassment Sexual harassment violates state and federal law and is a serious violation of Ursuline Academy policy. Sexual harassment is defined as: unwelcome
advances, requests for sexual favors and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when:
Submission to such conduct is made to be either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual's employment or success as a student
Submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment or educational decisions affecting such
individual; or
Such conduct has the purpose or effect of substantially interfering with an individual's work or educational performance, or creating an
intimidating, hostile or offensive working or educational environment.
Hazing Hazing of any sort is a serious violation of Ursuline Academy’s disciplinary policy and will not be tolerated in any form. Hazing is defined in section 17
of chapter 269 of the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as “any conduct or method of initiation into any student organization, whether on
public or private property, which willfully or recklessly endangers the physical or mental health of any student or other person. Such conduct shall
include whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to the weather, forced consumption of any food, liquor, beverage, drug or other
substance, or any other brutal treatment or forced physical activity which is likely to adversely affect the physical health or safety of any such student or
other person, or which subjects such student or other person to extreme mental stress, including extended deprivation of sleep or rest or extended
isolation.” Not only is it a crime to participate in or organize hazing, but it is also a crime for a person at the scene of such a crime to fail to report hazing:
“Whoever knows that another person is the victim of hazing as defined in section seventeen and is at the scene of such crime shall, to the extent that such
person can do so without danger or peril to himself or others, report such crime to an appropriate law enforcement official as soon as reasonably
practicable. Whoever fails to report such crime shall be punished by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars.” (Section 18)
Drug/Alcohol Policy A student who has an alcohol or drug problem is encouraged to seek the aid of a member of the school staff or other outside assistance.
Evidence of possession, use or being under the influence of alcohol or drugs on school property or at a school-related event is grounds for expulsion. In
September 5, 1989, the State of Massachusetts passed 3 laws dealing with drugs/alcohol: 1) 6 months to 1 year loss of license for use of fake I.D. to
purchase alcohol; 2) Up to 5 years loss of license for any drug conviction - including possession; and 3) Mandatory 2 year jail sentence for dealing drugs
near schools.
Smoking Smoking is not permitted in any school building, on school grounds, in the immediate vicinity of the school or at activities sponsored by the school. Students caught smoking on campus will be subject to detention and/or a call home to parents.
29
Head Injury Management and Prevention Policy Ursuline Academy is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our students. Children and adolescents are at a greater risk for head injury and
concussion than adults. Scientific evidence supports the finding that a traumatic brain injury can have a serious effect on a young developing brain. In
order to consistently and effectively manage these injuries, Ursuline Academy has established this policy, in accordance with MA 105 CMR 201.000, to
provide guidelines for the training, prevention, management, and return to school and activities for students who incur a head injury.
The care and management of head injuries in the school setting requires collaboration among families, administrators, medical providers, school nursing,
athletics and guidance staff.
All students must submit an updated physical examination performed within the previous 13 months before try-outs or practice in accordance with MIAA
regulations.
The school will offer concussion education for athletes, administrators, teachers, parents, guidance staff and the nurse. The athletic director will mandate
concussion education for all coaches in the form of the National Federation of High School’s online concussion course.
Suspected concussions that occur during school or school activities are reported immediately to the parent/guardian for referral to a medical provider.
Head injuries occurring outside of the school day or school athletic activities should be reported by the family to the school for follow-up and monitoring
of the student while in school.
A physician, under the guidelines set forth in MA 105 CMR 201.000, must give medical clearance for the gradual return to academics and athletics.
Students must be fully re-engaged in all academic activities before a return to athletics will be permitted.
Academic support during recovery will be provided for students. We will implement the following accommodations as needed for the period of time
prescribed by the student’s physician:
a. excused absences and or/partial days
b. rest period during the day
c. extension of assignment deadlines
d. staggering or postponement of testing
e. accommodation for hypersensitivity to light and noise (a more quiet environment for testing and assignments)
f. waiver of physical education and team practices
g. avoidance of other physical exertion
h. use of a reader, a note taker or tutor
i. preferred classroom seating
If needed, a graduated re-entry plan meeting with the guidance counselor will be scheduled for a student with a concussion. The purpose of this meeting
will be to discuss any accommodations or modifications with respect to academics, including course requirements, homework, testing, and scheduling,
and other aspects of school activities, including athletics. The assistant principal, in conjunction with the principal, will be responsible for the
30
implementation of this policy. This policy will be reviewed by a team of school staff representing administration, nursing, athletics and guidance at least
every two years and revised if indicated.
Ursuline Academy Health Policies The Health Office is staffed by a registered nurse who is committed to minimizing health-related barriers to learning. The nurse is present each day from
8:00 am to 3:00 pm. The following health policies are in place to support student learning by maximizing health and wellness.
Health Data Requirements
Ursuline Academy complies with Massachusetts Department of Public Health regulations and requires that the following information be on file in the
Health Office before a student may attend school:
Immunizations o Proof of MDPH required immunizations must be submitted and reviewed by the school nurse before a student
may enter school.
Physical examination o A current physical examination is required for all new students in grades 7-12.
o A current physical examination is required for all students entering grade 10.
o Student athletes – MIAA and Ursuline Academy rules require documentation of a physical exam performed within 13 months of
the first day of tryouts for eligibility to participate in the athletic program. The physical exam must be submitted to the school nurse
for review before tryouts.
Student Illness Parents are urged not to send a student to school if the student is ill.
Students are encouraged to see the school nurse for non-urgent care or to discuss health concerns during free periods or
between classes. If it is necessary to see the nurse during an assigned class, the student must notify her classroom teacher and
check in at the Main Office before visiting the Health Office.
Following assessment of the student, the school nurse will determine whether or not the student will be sent back to class, detained in the
Health Office or dismissed from school. When appropriate or upon request, a parent will be contacted for consultation.
A parent will be contacted for dismissal of the student in the event of illness or injury. Students are not to contact
parents via cell phone for dismissal before seeing the school nurse. The nurse or school secretary must be able to speak with a parent
about a student’s condition before dismissal will be granted.
The Emergency Contact Information Form must be completed and submitted to the school nurse by August 1. After submission of the
completed form, please notify the school nurse of any changes immediately, as this information is necessary to notify a parent in the event
of illness or injury.
31
To minimize the spread of illness, a student should remain home from school if she has:
o vomiting or diarrhea until symptom-free for 24 hours.
o fever (temperature greater than 1000F) until symptom-free for 24 hours [without use of Tylenol or Advil/Motrin].
o strep throat until treated with antibiotics for 24 hours.
o undiagnosed rash or skin eruptions.
o conjunctivitis/pinkeye until treated with antibiotics for 24 hours.
o a communicable disease until no longer infectious.
o head lice that have not been treated.
o pain that requires the use of narcotic medication.
A student with a short-term restriction in either her physical activity or mobility must provide a note from her parent to the school nurse. A
doctor’s note to the school nurse is required for accommodations/restrictions extending beyond 2 days. Appropriate faculty and staff will be
notified of either restrictions or accommodations whenever necessary.
Parents should contact the school nurse before the beginning of each school year if their daughter has a chronic medical
condition that requires attention, specialized health care, or potential emergency intervention during the school day. These
conditions include, but are not limited to, asthma, diabetes, life-threatening allergies requiring emergency medication, a seizure
disorder, and mental health concerns.
An Individual Health Care Plan (IHCP) is developed by the school nurse in collaboration with the student, parent and,
if appropriate, healthcare provider, for a student diagnosed with a chronic medical condition to ensure the student’s full
participation in her educational program.
Medication Administration Ursuline Academy complies with Mass DPH regulations 105 CMR 210.000 and state guidelines regarding the administration of medications in school.
The medication policy in its entirety is available for parents’ review in the Health Office. Medication cannot be dispensed unless the following
requirements have been met:
Students who must take medication during the school day must make this known to the nurse.
Medication administration should be scheduled at times other than school hours whenever possible.
All medications require both a physician’s order and a signed parental consent form. This includes prescription and
over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol, Advil, Benadryl, Tums, etc.
o Medication will not be administered until both signed documents are received by the school nurse.
o Forms must be renewed at the beginning of every school year.
o These health forms are available in the Health Office or via download from the Health Office on Blackboard Engage.
o Medication must be delivered to the school nurse in a either a pharmacy or manufacturer-labeled container by a parent
or guardian.
Only the doses to be given during school hours should be brought to school.
o All medications are to be kept in the Health Office. Students may neither carry medication nor self-medicate.
o All medications must be retrieved by the parent/guardian by the last day of school or it will be destroyed.
Following consultation with the school nurse and the development of a medication administration plan, the following

exceptions to self-administration apply:
o students with asthma or other respiratory diseases may possess and administer prescription inhalers.
o students with life-threatening allergies may possess and administer epinephrine by auto-injector.
o students with diabetes may possess and administer a glucose monitoring test and insulin delivery.
o students with cystic fibrosis may possess and administer prescription enzyme supplements.
Special Circumstances Students with a substance abuse problem, eating disorder, or any other emotional problem that affects their ability to succeed and thrive at Ursuline will
be required to participate successfully in a treatment program or course of therapy. Refusal to participate or underperformance in such a program may
result in a student’s dismissal from Ursuline. Based on concern for the wellbeing of the entire student body, Ursuline Academy reserves the right to
determine the outcome of each case. Whenever questions arise about a student’s emotional or mental health, parents/guardians, the student, members of
the administration, the nurse and the student’s guidance counselor will meet to discuss appropriate treatment options and to determine what steps are
necessary to ensure the student’s continued enrollment at Ursuline or to devise a plan of medical leave and re-entry (if appropriate). The school may
require contact with medical personnel involved in the student’s treatment or require that a psychiatric evaluation of the student be completed before the
student may re-enter Ursuline.
Communicating with the nurse The school nurse can be reached either by telephone or by email at [email protected]. Inquiries will be answered within one business day.
Parents are encouraged to call the school nurse any time they have either questions or concerns or want to share important information such as a change
in health status, a new medical diagnosis, a report of a contagious disease or condition such as strep throat, chicken pox, whooping cough, measles,
mumps, mononucleosis, scabies, meningitis, scarlet fever or lice.
Information regarding health requirements, health forms, and health resources can be accessed through the Health Office link on Blackboard Engage.
Use of Pesticides Ursuline Academy provides numerous health services for students. One of those services is pest control. State regulations require that the school give a
24 hour notice prior to any pest control application made on school property to parents who request it. Parents must notify the school in writing if they
wish to be notified of the pest control applications.
Asbestos Notification In accordance with EPA regulations, Ursuline Academy has been inspected for asbestos-containing materials by accredited inspectors using
methodologies specified in the Asbestos-Containing Materials in Schools Rule: 40 CFR, Part 763 (AHERA) Friable (easily crumbled) asbestos-
containing material may cause health problems.
33
Asbestos-containing material is present in Ursuline Academy. A record of the inspection, a diagram of the location(s) of asbestos, management plan for
the school, and a copy of relevant EPA regulations are available at Ursuline Academy. Please note that this letter is updated annually and can be found in
Blackboard Engage.
STUDENT SERVICES
School Store The school bookstore is open during the morning break on Tuesday and Thursday. For the convenience of students, during the first week of school the
Bookstore is open additional times. Examples of items available for sale in the bookstore are school supplies, uniform sweatshirts, gym uniforms, spirit
wear and Ursuline Academy logo items.
Business Office The Business Office administers the lunch program, bus programs, tuition and fees, course materials, and financial aid. Questions about these matters
should be addressed to Ann Buccelli at [email protected].
Library The Ursuline Academy Library is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The resources of the library include over 10,000 volumes, 75 periodicals, personal
computers, Macs and access to the Internet as well as printers and a fine collection of reference works. Library fines apply to overdue books and students
are required to pay for lost books. All fines must be paid in full before a student is allowed to take final exams.
Lockers Each student is assigned a locker and a combination lock. Assigned lockers must not be changed without permission from the assistant principal. Lockers
should be kept locked at all times; students who fail to lock their lockers must accept the responsibility for items lost, stolen or borrowed without
permission. Lock combinations should never be given out to any other person. Students will be responsible for paying for any damage done to the locker
assigned to them or for a missing lock. If a lock is lost, a $10.00 replacement fee is charged. For safety reasons, books, book bags, clothing and sports
equipment may not be left in hallways at any time. The lockers, as well as the desks, are school property and may be opened at the discretion of the
school administration.
Lost and Found The lost and found area is located on the ground floor across from the vending machines. The student's name and home address should be inside the cover
of all her books. Uniforms, particularly blazers, should be marked clearly with the student's name. All valuable items that are found should be returned
to the office. Other items will be kept for two weeks, at the end of which they will be donated to charity. Students should not carry excessive amounts of
money or valuables. Ursuline Academy will not be responsible for money or valuables lost.
34
Lunch Offerings The goal of the lunch program is to provide a varied menu with healthy choices for a diverse and active student body. Each day soup, hot entrées, deli
sandwiches and a salad bar are available, along with fresh fruit, milk and juice. While the Tea Room is not nut-free, meals prepared in our kitchen are.
Pre-packaged food including desserts and bakery items may contain nuts. Again this year, we are pleased to have TILL, Inc., as our food service provider
for the Tea Room.
The price of a lunch plate this year will be $5.00. Families may purchase prepaid lunch passes at discounts. The pass allows a student to receive one of
the three meal choices on the days lunch is scheduled to be served. Lunch passes are not transferable; students who promote the use of their pass by
others or who use others’ lunch passes will be subject to detention. However, students who forget their lunch at home or do not have money for lunch are
always welcome to avail themselves of any of the lunch options and to pay within a reasonable timeframe.
STUDENT LIFE
Clubs Ursuline students are encouraged to take advantage of the variety of extra-curricular activities available to them. Clubs meet both before and after school,
during “D” blocks daily, and during Thursday Morning Club Period (8:05-8:45 every Thursday morning). Students who do not wish to enroll in a
Thursday morning club may make use that time to see guidance counselors, visit teachers for extra help, study in the tea room, attend optional prayer
services, or make appointments to see health care professionals.
Care of the Tea Room Since students use the Tea Room before, during and after school, students must help to maintain it as a place of hospitality and comfort. Students must be
courteous to and show respect for the Tea Room staff at all times. Students are expected to clear their tables and remove all trays, paper and food and to
wipe the table clean of crumbs and spills after each use. If more than eight chairs are at a table, extra chairs must be moved to tables with fewer than
eight chairs at the end of every lunch period/other periods of occupancy. At lunch, one student per table per week will be appointed the captain of her
table’s clean-up efforts and will be held accountable for her table’s condition.
Dances On-campus Ursuline dances include the Father-Daughter Dance for grades 7-9 and the Winter Semi-Formal for grades 10-12. The Junior-Senior Prom
takes place off-campus. All dances are chaperoned by members of the Ursuline Academy faculty and administration.
Rules for dances:
All students and guests are expected to dress and to dance appropriately.
All students and guests are expected to comport themselves appropriately in their actions and speech.
35
Students must follow the established time of arrival and may not leave before the posted end time unless signed out by a parent or guardian.
Students may not leave the dance and then return.
In the cases of the prom or semi-formal, each Ursuline student may invite one guest from another school, whose name and contact
information must be provided to the assistant principal prior to the dance.
All students and guests should have a picture ID with them.
Ursuline Academy will occasionally announce dances being held at other schools or parishes, but does not provide chaperones to these events. Parents
who are concerned or have questions about dances held at venues other than Ursuline should contact the assistant principal.
Field Trips Experiential education enhances classroom instruction. When a student accompanies a teacher or staff person on a field trip, the student must comply
with all Ursuline Academy policies. Signed permission slips including emergency contact information as well as any fees must be submitted to the
appropriate designee in advance of the trip. Uniforms may be required dress for field trips.
TECHNOLOGY
Responsible Use Policy Ursuline Academy expects technological resources to be used in ways that promote unity and mutual respect within our learning community. * Access to
the Ursuline Academy network and other equipment is a privileged component of the learning process. Ursuline Academy monitors use of the school's
computer resources and will restrict or revoke access to technological resources and apply other disciplinary action when a student is found to have
violated the standards of acceptable use below. However, given the rapidly changing nature of Information Technology systems and devices, the policies
defined in this document cannot cover every possible situation. Therefore, students and adults alike are expected to use good judgment when working in
gray areas not covered explicitly by these policies.
1. The integrity of passwords, personal / confidential information, and an individual’s identity must be treated with trust and respect. Attempts to defeat
system protections or to violate an individual’s privacy break the trust that should exist among students, faculty and staff.
2. The spirit and letter of all student handbook rules also apply to the use of electronic media within or beyond the Ursuline Academy community.
3. Students must comply with copyright laws and the provisions for license agreements that apply to software, printed and electronic materials,
graphics, multimedia, and all other technology resources licensed to and purchased by Ursuline Academy or accessible over network resources provided
by the school. This commitment to rights and responsibilities requires respect for and compliance with terms of use, copyright laws, and license
agreements that pertain to all of the materials used and accessed. The school requires that students act as careful stewards of school property and the
property of others.
4. Students must respect and safeguard the integrity of the network, computer systems and hardware. The installation and/or use of any Internet-based file-sharing program on equipment belonging to Ursuline Academy are explicitly prohibited except with prior written permission by the director of
technology.
36
5. Tablets, phones or laptops will be used only with permission from a teacher or administrator or during the times designated for such purposes. Such
devices must be used visibly (the device must be placed on a desk or tabletop) and in ways that do not detract or distract from the academic atmosphere of
Ursuline Academy.
Failure to comply with these standards may result in the loss of technology privileges, and other disciplinary actions may be implemented.
* “Technological resources” refers to computers, printers, tablets, cell phones, smart phones, scanners and other peripherals, email, Internet services,
servers, network files and folders and all other technology-related equipment and services owned or leased by or licensed to Ursuline Academy. Network
resources are provided subject to compliance with the terms of this policy.
Personal Electronic Equipment The Ursuline Academy network is to be used for educational purposes only. Students may only access the wireless network with the permission of a
teacher or staff member. All devices owned by students must be equipped with recent and adequate anti-virus protection. Ursuline Academy reserves the
right to remove any device from its network without prior notice and to bar the device from accessing the network in the future.
Appropriate Use It is the teacher’s responsibility to create rules in classrooms to assure an appropriate learning atmosphere. It is the student’s responsibility to use
electronic devices appropriately, maintaining the standards of decorum expected of Ursuline Academy students.
Mobile devices can be used for educational purposes at any time and any place on campus with the explicit permission of a faculty or staff member. The
exception to this rule is that mobile devices may not be used during lunch periods in the Tea Room. If a mobile device distracts or disrupts a class or
activity or affects the user’s ability to comport herself appropriately, students will be held accountable and be subject to appropriate sanctions. Student-
owned devices should be left in lockers during all school assembly activities. In addition, mobile devices should not be in use (for typing, texting, playing
games, with or without audio and ear buds) while sitting, standing or walking in hallways or bathrooms on campus.
All Ursuline students are encouraged to:
Use technology to support their learning in ways consistent with the Serviam mission;
Conduct research for educational purposes related to curriculum and personal interest and
development;
Access information that will facilitate their selection of the college or university they wish to
attend;
Increase their awareness of career opportunities;
Infuse technology into their coursework;
Improve their information literacy and research skills
Find ways to use technology in service of others
Cell Phones/Smart Phones Students may carry cell phones/smart phones during the school day. All phones should be set to the “silent” mode during the day. Before and after school,
phones should be set to “vibrate.” A cell phone/smart phone should never have an audible ring while in use on campus. While in class, students may carry
phones on their person, but they may not be used for any purpose or function without the permission of the classroom teacher.
37
Phones may be used for phone calls and texting before and after school hours, during break, or during class time with the permission of a teacher for
educational purposes only.
Cell phone/smart phones should not be used to access the Ursuline wireless network unless a student has been granted permission by a faculty or staff
member to use the device on the Ursuline wireless network for educational purposes. The use of cell phones/smart phones to create wireless “hotspots” is
also strictly prohibited.
Tablets and Laptops Tablets, e-readers and laptops are permitted on campus for educational purposes. Students who choose to avail themselves of a tablet or laptop are
responsible for having the device in good working order (fully charged, equipped with anti-virus software and up-to-date apps and books required for
class) each school day. Use of these devices in class is entirely at teacher discretion. Every teacher has the right to determine what devices are acceptable
in her or his classroom and to determine what modes of usage may be employed (use of electronic versions of textbooks, note-taking applications, etc.).
Students who bring personal devices to school should have their names engraved or labeled on the device for easy identification and should employ
strong password and security settings.
Photos and Video In the interest of protecting the privacy of the people who come to Ursuline Academy each day, no one is allowed to use any camera, video camera, smart
phone or any other electronic device to take any photo(s) or video(s) of any student, faculty member, administrator, staff and any other personnel on
campus at any time without written permission of each individual and the school’s administration. Students are never allowed to upload content from
photo or video obtained without permission to any website or social network. This policy includes all school activities and events, from the classroom to
the athletic fields and stage, etc. The uploading of such content without permission will result in significant disciplinary sanctions.
Social Media Participation in any form of social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,) is prohibited on campus during the school day. Students may not “friend” or
otherwise communicate or attempt to communicate with their teachers or any other employee of Ursuline Academy using social media. When using
social media outside of school, students are expected to adhere to the Responsible Use of Technology Policy. Student use of social media, including
wikis, blogs and photo and video sharing sites, should conform to the values of Ursuline Academy. Students should have no expectation of privacy when
using social media and should be mindful of what they post online: students should be aware that their digital footprints are very frequently public.
Students should never post anything online that they would not want their peers, friends, parents, teachers, administrators or other members of the
Ursuline Academy community to view. Every student must understand that her online identity is an extension of herself and that what is inappropriate in
school is also inappropriate online. Students who use either Ursuline Academy or personal resources to post, create, send, access, download or upload
material which is abusive, unlawful, harmful, hateful, crude, harassing or sexually explicit will face disciplinary action.
38

We realize that we cannot establish school policies and sanctions for every possible situation. It is our obligation to act to preserve and protect the rights
and safety of all members of our community and to take appropriate action. We ask that parents trust that teachers and administrators have the good
running of the school and the best interests of the community at heart when they respond to infractions.
