Reflections from Fr. David I think that, with the amount time that these early days of summer have been awash with seemingly endless rain, I am savoring the times of dry, sunny weather. We waited so long for the cool spring to end that we are reluctant to complain about summer heat and we are appreciative of good weather when we have it! And the days of good weather bring a lot that can move the heart and mind to wonder. For the first time in many years I have taken the time to notice some caterpillars taking up residence on the back deck of the Rectory. They have been fattening themselves to prepare for their metamorphosis by devouring planted parsley plants in pots on the deck. It made me wonder how it is that all the chemicals that are needed to turn a ravenous caterpillar into a rapturously elegant butterfly can be found in or made from parsley! Perhaps it’s a good idea not to ignore the parsley stalks that often garnish our plates in restaurants but rather to eat them...who knows what we might turn into?!?! These days we are constantly reminded that this month marks the 50th anniversary of the historic mission of Apollo 11 - the first manned mission that landed men on the moon and returned them safely to the earth. For those of us alive at the time, the decade that saw the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs captivated the minds and imaginations of people around the world. Without the use of computing power that we take for granted today, it is a wonder to consider the feats of engineering, innovation, scientific and technological development that brought about NASA’s successful efforts. It is a wonder that challenges were so aggressively met, problems solved, barriers overcome and achievements realized in such a short amount of time. Our nation was resolved to meet the deadline set by President John F. Kennedy and marshalled all the resources necessary to land men on the moon. It is also a wonder that we seem so unwilling or unmotivated to harness the necessary means to solve so many of the challenges of our own times.

One of the many blessings that we are enjoying this year at Notre Dame Parish is a significant spike in the number of weddings at the parish. I really enjoy spending time with couples in Marriage Preparation and this year I am blessed to be working with many fine young men and women as they prepare to begin their life together in the Sacrament of Marriage. Being married for over 40 years myself, being with couples preparing for marriage always moves me to wonder at the great power of marital love not only in my own life but also in the lives of the engaged couples. How amazing it is that the gift of love -

which comes from the One who is love - has the power to enrich our lives in ways that can never be fully described. As my wife Jane and I prepare to assist our daughter, Hannah, with her move to Anchorage, Alaska for an internship in their public school system, I am moved by the wonder of the bond between parent and child...even when one’s child(ren) are adults. It did not take us long to fall in love

with our children after they were born...but that love for them—which was so strong at their birth—continues to grow and deepen as the years go by. And as our children establish their own lives and are no longer living with us, it is a source of wonder to behold the stronger bonds of love take deeper hold within our hearts even as geographic distance grows. I am still a pushover for the wonder that fills me as parents bring their infant children for baptism...to behold the joy in parents and to marvel that their love for their girl or boy is nothing compared to God’s love for their child...and for them. On July 4th we gathered at Ty Warner Park for the most excellent annual firework display. And the gathering in the park was a true cross section of our diverse American family. I could not help but wonder at the blessings of a nation that could welcome, nurture and thrive with such a rich blending of traditions from around the world. Too bad that there was no reporting on the good spirit in that gathering of neighbors, Americans...and there was no split among us! The wonder of being one!!

Take time for wonder

Parish Outreach

…if you’re away, you can drop off dona ons any me at the

office desk or on the shelves in the Narthex.

OR: consider an Amazon de-livery of your food dona-

ons. Place your order and opt to send to the Food Pan-try instead of your address. It’s fast, easy and provides the same help as if you had shopped and dropped off.

DONATE NEXT WEEKEND

YOU are helping 246 local men, women, and children

• Canned meats: Think beyond tuna & soup. Consider canned beef, canned ham, canned chicken, canned salmon. Or hearty ready-to-go meals like beef stew and chili with meat.

• Canned vegetables: Everyone donates green beans. Kids all love corn. Also, potatoes, carrots, spinach, peas or any other veggies your family likes.

• Canned fruit: Not only pineapple. This is the most commonly donated fruit. Dried fruit works too (raisins, etc.)

• Boxed meals THAT REQUIRE ONLY WATER. Hamburger Helper isn’t helpful if you don’t have hamburger.

• Low-sugar cereal like plain Cheerios • Peanut butter…and, of course, jelly • Canned pastas • Pasta (boxes are easier to store), pasta sauce • Biscuit or baking mixes (again that only require water) • Snack items for kids during long summer f play: juice boxes, applesauce contain-

ers, pudding containers, granola bars • Nutrition drinks (Ensure, Boost, etc) • Chocolate and Coffee: not a necessity but just a pick-me-up • Toiletries, cleaning supplies, paper products

Dear Parishioners and Parents of Notre Dame Catholic School, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself as the newest mem-ber of the Notre Dame Catholic School Family. My name is Mr. Thomas (Tom) Smyth and I have been a practicing school administrator, as either a principal or superintendent, for the last eighteen years. Prior to coming to Notre Dame School, I was a principal at St. Jerome Catholic School in the Archdiocese of Chicago for one year. Before that time, I was a public school superintendent at Sandridge Elementary School District 172 and Ridgeland Elementary School District 122. Prior to those positions, I was a K-8 principal at Colona Elementary School and Midland Elementary School located in Iowa. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree from Northwest Missouri State University, my Masters from the University of Northern Iowa, and my Superintendent Specialist degree from Western Illinois University. Throughout my years in educating students, I have come to the under-standing that it is important we must focus on students, academic, physical, social emotional, and spiritual needs for them to succeed. The purpose of an elementary school is to help students become successful in high school, college, and life. With a solid foundation in math, reading, language arts, and social studies, our students can be successful wherever they go.

As a practicing educational administrator and new principal to Notre Dame School, I believe in the importance of parental involvement for the success of our students. Open lines of communication between teachers, parents, school office, and the parish is imperative. If we are all on the same page and moving in the same direction, the faster and more efficient our student’s success will be. As many of you already know, my door is always open. In conclusion, I want to inform you that this will be an exciting time at Notre Dame Catholic School. I am highly motivated and look forward to seeing all of you. Have a Blessed Day,

Mr. Tom Smyth, Ed.S. Principal

Parish Farewell

“What is Apollos, after all, and what is Paul? Ministers through whom you became believers, just as the Lord assigned each one. I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the growth. Therefore, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who causes the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters are equal, and each will receive wages in proportion to his labor. For we are God’s co-workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.” 1Cor3:5-9

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I want to thank all of you for the many ways you allowed me to be a pastoral minister here at Notre Dame. As the years go by I will look back with profound thankfulness on our adventure together in ministry and service; I trust the same will be true for you. These nine years with you have been unique in my experience in ministry. We have shared a lot of history. My first month here we experienced the death of Fr. Bob, Christmas Concerts, Bible Studies, wedding preparations, adults being received into the church, mission trips, service days, retreats, funeral planning, Holy Thursday pilgrimages, Adult Enrichment Programs, book discussions, server trainings, or just a simple greeting on Sunday morning before Mass. I have received so many blessings being here at Notre Dame Parish and you have been one of them. This is a very bittersweet occasion for me. I will be moving on to St. Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield as the Director of Adult formation. And I am excited about the possibilities there. I will continue to hold you in my prayers. I pray for you to have a future like that spoken of in Jeremiah 29: 11. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” I hope that you continue to grow in your relationship with God so that you find that it is God who is the source of all strength and hope for you. I hope that you will BE who you ARE -- the beloved and loving people of God -- all of your days. Please keep me in your prayers and I will hold you in mine. Until we meet again … Peace and Goodness!

Doug Muir, Ed.D.
