US BELTIE NEWS

The 26th

Nat ional Bel ted Gal loway Sale In this i ssue

President Greg Hipple

Soon, those of us who have spring

calving herds will be welcoming a new

calf crop. Winter cold, snow, ice, and

gray skies will yield to mud, sunshine,

then warmer days, and finally to green

grass. A new crop year will begin and

tractors will return to the fields. Here in the Midwest, the

landscape will turn from brown and dead looking, to freshly

tilled earth followed by green fields of neatly arranged rows

of new crops. The robins, red-winged blackbirds, flowers,

and of course the bugs, will all return.

After returning from the Spring Council Meeting held in

New Garus, Wisconsin and experiencing a beautiful spring-

like weekend, I feel refreshed. The dedication of the Council

members who worked so diligently on behalf of the

membership recharged my batteries. I am always impressed

by the dedication shown by those who volunteer to serve,

because they unselfishly donate their time, money, and

experience to further the work and duties of our Society.

Your Council made several important decisions at the

meeting. First of mention, I’d like to welcome Dawson

Masters of Malone, Texas to Council. Dawson was

unanimously appointed after the resignation of Chuck Neely

of Virginia. Please thank Chuck for his service to the

Society. Funding requests for three regional groups’

promotional and educational activities were approved. Also

approved, was funding to survey the Society membership.

The survey was recommended by the Long Range Planning

Committee in their effort to complete a study of the

Appendix registry. The study is a major undertaking, and in

my opinion, it is a subject I feel is imperative to every

member to take a few minutes to contemplate. Council is

charged with representing the interests of the membership,

so please let your thoughts be known.

Within the next few months, every member will be afforded

the opportunity to respond to the survey. Once tabulated, the

survey will guide Council to make the best decision on this

issue. Executive Director Dr. Vic Eggleston, and Leanne

Fogle, Editor of US Beltie News, will publish the history of

the Appendix registry, some interesting data, and the

potential solutions currently under consideration in the next

few issues of the newsletter. Stay tuned.

As spring returns, and life renews, take time to be

appreciative. We are all so busy and life pulls us in many

different directions--all at once. I encourage you to take a

few minutes to reflect on how the world is special--your

farms, cattle, lifestyle, friends, and most importantly, your

family.

The Spring Council meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m. February 20, 2016, in New Glarus, Wisconsin by President Greg Hipple (IA). Present: Treasurer Jon Bednarski (KY), Leanne Fogle (IL), Secretary Jane Hemmer (GA), Vice-President Lisa Lovett (IL), and Janie Tripp (MS). Also present was Executive Director Victor Eggleston (WI). Leanne Fogle represented the newsletter office. Absent: Mike Crittend-en (UT) and Past President Michelle Ogle (NJ). Secretary’s Report. Jane Hemmer reported the membership totals during 2015 were 830 Regular, 122 Junior, 9 Associate and 123 Life for a total membership of 1084. The 2015 registration/transfer data included 295 Males, 1019 Purebred Females, 154 Appendix Females and 944 Transfers. Total transactions were 2,233. Second reminder dues notices will be sent during February 2016 by the CLRC. President Hipple asked that a third reminder postcard be sent to all of the 2015 members who have not paid their dues by April 30, 2016. Treasurer’s Report. Jon Bednarski reported the Society has $30,127 in checking, $25,872 in savings, and $102,969 in a certificate of depos-it. Society assets total $158,968. Promotion and Advertising Committee. Chairman Jon Bednarski gave a review of all committee projects. The committee is seeking edi-torials to produce the 2016 Belted Galloway Journal. Advertising cam-paigns have been managed by Connections of Louisville, Kentucky for the past three years. Bednarski will meet with Connections to discuss the possibility of implementing a three-year ad renewal policy. The magazine will go to print in August 2016. The membership has actively used the Land’s End apparel website to order BGS logo wear. Sixteen people have committed to travel to Scotland for the 11th Galloway World Congress. Updates will continue to be posted on beltie.org. Chatfield Scholarship Committee. Vic Eggleston reported that appli-cations are due at the end of April. Two reminders have been sent out in the newsletter. The application is now posted on beltie.org and a re-minder will be placed on social media accounts and again in the news-letter.

Executive Committee. President Hipple announced that Chuck Neely (VA) has resigned from Council and Dawson Masters (TX) will fill the position. President Hipple reported that EDJE has placed spam filters on Society email addresses to protect Council members’ personal email accounts. The contracts for the offices of the Executive Director and Newsletter were reviewed with Council. The Belted Galloway Foundation. Jon Bednarski reported that a Foundation conference call was held in February 2016. Foundation balances are: General Fund: $22,306; Scholarship Fund $20,332; BGJA Fund: $20,641. A previous campaign was made to solicit donations to fund a junior leadership program for Belted Galloway youth and $1100 was donated. The Foundation will hold an informational meeting in Louisville, Kentucky to discuss implementing a junior leadership pro-gram. Bednarski stated that $20,000 is needed to begin the junior lead-ership program. Council requested that the Foundation be promoted in the 2016 Belted Galloway Journal. Belted Galloway Junior Association. Co-Chair Janie Tripp reported that the committee held a teleconference with regional representatives across the country in January. It is the 20th anniversary of the Belted

Galloway Junior Association and the committee would like to com-memorate the milestone. Council approved funding for the design of a logo to commemorate the 20th anniversary by EDJE Technologies. Council requested that Tripp send the Belted Galloway Junior Associa-tion Handbook to EDJE Technologies to request a quote for the rede-sign of the book with the addition of color photography. The new Handbook would be available in digital format only. Tripp will meet

with Michelle Ogle who is the BGJA leader during the Kathi Jurkowski Junior National regarding planning to commemorate the 20th anniver-sary. Council commended Michelle Ogle (NJ), Diane Gushee (ME), and Scot Adams (ME) for their administration of the 2015 activities and show at Louisville. The silent auction that is held during the annual meeting in Louisville funds the upcoming year’s junior show. Vic Eg-gleston stated that each junior region may annually request funding from the BGJA account. Council discussed that it is the responsibility of each region to do fundraising. An example of a recent successful campaign was the Aldermere Achievers raised $17,000 to show their cattle at the 2015 national show. Michelle Ogle has volunteered to oversee the establishment of the Belted Galloway Junior Association website and she is working to complete the project. The second North-east Junior National will be held at Fryeburg, ME in late April. Long Range Planning. Lisa Lovett reported that the committee has had several meetings over the past few months regarding registration and recordation rules of the Belted Galloway Society, Inc. The commit-tee studied data from the decade 2004 through 2014 showing that there are fewer percentage animals being recorded in the Appendix. Pure-bred, mismarked females are also recorded and placed in the same Ap-pendix section of the Belted Galloway Herdbook. The committee has determined that the current rules need to be reviewed for possible amendments. Council approved the committee’s request to survey the Belted Galloway membership to ask for member opinions regarding: the possible discontinuation of the upbreeding program; the establish-ment of a percentage Belted Galloway influenced program; and the possible placement of mismarked females in the purebred registry by identifying the females by their mismark code (M1, M2, M3, or M4). Council allocated funds for the project. EDJE Technologies will con-duct the digital survey. An article has been written that will appear in the April 2016 issue of the US Beltie News explaining the data. Survey questions have been formulated to conduct the survey in May 2016. Newsletter Committee. Leanne Fogle reported that April 2016 issue will be the last issue mailed to members that have not paid their 2016 Society dues. The Society’s policy has been to send one newsletter to one mailing address only. The mailing list is being sorted in-house to

reduce multiple newsletters sent to a mailing address. Website. President Hipple communicated that Michelle Ogle initiated and lead the redesign of beltie.org. It has been a positive decision and EDGE Technologies has been a tremendous resource for the BGS. Online registrations update. The CLRC must do software updates to make it a reality for the Belted Galloway Society, Inc. membership to do online registrations. They have not given the Society a timeline. About bulls … Before advertising a young male be sure he is well

conformed, tracks properly, has good legs and feet, and exhibits good weight gains. We should have data available on his birth weight, 205-day weaning weight, and yearling weight. If he's reached breeding age (around 18 months), it's definitely a plus to have his semen checked for quantity and motility, and uniform scrotal development ( two normal sized testicles). Any data availa-ble should appear in your advertisement along with his birth date and the names of his sire and dam. It is required that registration numbers be included on bulls advertised for sale in the classi-

fieds.
