The World AIDS Foundation (WAF), j o i n t l y sponsored by t h e U.S. Department o f Heal th and Human S e r v i c e s and t h e I n s t i t u t P a s t e u r o f P a r i s , France, announces i t s i n t e n t t o suppor t r e s e a r c h and e d u c a t i o n r e l a t i n g t o AIDS i n t h e developing world. The g o a l o f t h e WAF is t o f ac i l i t a t e i n f o r m a t i o n exchangeand t o a s s i s t deve loping c o u n t r i e s t o respond t o t h e AIDS pandemic.

The WAF i s p a r t i c u l a r l y i n t e r e s t e d i n p r o j e c t s t h a t are c a t a l y t i c , and, once i n p l a c e , could have a m u l t i p l i c a t i v e e f fec t . The WAF is s p e c i f i c a l l yi n t e r e s t e d i n s u p p o r t i n g :

A ) shor t - te rm, in-country t r a i n i n g f o r c l i n i c i a n s , a l l i e d h e a l t h p r o f e s s i o n a l s , and t e c h n i c i a n s ;

B ) f e l l o w s h i p s t o suppor t t r a i n i n g f o r n a t i o n a l e x p e r t s ;

C ) development and t e s t i n g of new concepts and demonst ra t ions f o r p r e v e n t i n g t h e s p r e a d o f H I V ; and

D ) h i g h l y focused workshops t h a t enhance t h e s c i e n t i f i c p r o c e s s and t r a n s f e r knowledge needed i n t h e e f f o r t a g a i n s t H I V i n f e c t i o n s and AIDS.

The l i m i t o f any s i n g l e funding r e q u e s t t o t h e WAF is $200,000.

The s t u d y w i l l c o n s i s t o f a double-b l ind ,p l acebo-con t ro l l ed t r i a l o f d a i l y o r a l a c y c l o v i r f o r t h e p r e v e n t i o n o f HSV i n f e c t i o n and m u c o s i t i s i n HSV-seroposit ive p a t i e n t s undergoing i n t e n s i v e chemotherapy f o r t h e t r e a t m e n t o f leukemias o r lymphomas. PURPOSE

The purpose o f t h i s i n i t i a t i v e is t o e s t a b l i s h and suppor t C e n t e r s t o conduct i n t e r d i s c i p l i n a r y r e s e a r c h on t h e e f f e c t i v e n e s s o f drug abuse t r e a t m e n t .

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

The Abuse Treatment E v a l u a t i o n Research Center Grant Program is des igned t o complement t h e i n v e s t i g a t o r i n i t i a t e d r e s e a r c h g r a n t s program o f t h e N a t i o n a l I n s t i t u t e on Drug Abuse ( N I D A ) by p r o v i d i n g long-term suppor t f o r i n t e r d i s c i p l i n a r y e v a l u a t i v e r e s e a r c h on drug abuse t r e a t m e n t . The program is in tended t o a t t r ac t i n v e s t i g a t o r s i n t h e b e h a v i o r a l , s o c i a l , and biomedical s c i e n c e s t o conduct e v a l u a t i v e r e s e a r c h on t h e t r e a t m e n t o f drug abuse, and t o provide a s t a b l e environment f o r such persons t o engage i n t r e a t m e n t r e s e a r c h . A Center is expec ted t o become a s i g n i f i c a n t r e g i o n a l o r n a t i o n a l r e s e a r c h r e s o u r c e . C e n t e r s funded under t h i s announcement w i l l conduct t r e a t m e n t e v a l u a t i o n r e s e a r c h and p a r t i c i p a t e a c t i v e l y i n and c o o p e r a t e wi th N I D A ' s programmatic e f f o r t s t o s y s t e m a t i c a l l y review, c o o r d i n a t e , and i n t e g r a t er e s e a r c h on t rea tment p o p u l a t i o n s p r o c e s s , and outcomes.

A v a r i e t y o f d e s i g n s and r e s e a r c h s t r a t e g i e s may be employed t o e v a l u a t e e x i s t i n g t r e a t m e n t programming and r e l a t e d i n t e r v e n t i o n s . Both f i e l d s t u d i e s and c o n t r o l l e d (randomized) s t u d i e s may be used, as w e l l as secondary a n a l y s e s t o i n v e s t i g a t e i s s u e s of i n t e r e s t t o t r e a t m e n t e v a l u a t i o n s . Areas f o r i n v e s t i g a t i o n p o t e n t i a l l y i n c l u d e comparat ive e f f e c t i v e n e s s o f t r e a t m e n t program t y p e s f o r wel l -def ined c l i e n t groups, t r e a t m e n t process , t h e s t r u c t u r e o f t r e a t m e n t , s t u d i e s of s p e c i f i c m o d a l i t i e s , o u t r e a c h , d i f f e r e n t i a l a t t r a c t i v e n e s s o f t r e a t m e n t , c l i e n t - t r e a t m e n t matching, t h e r o l e o f non-treatment f a c t o r s , c o r r e c t i o n a l t reatment , treatment o f drug abuse i n pr imary h e a l t h care d e l i v e r y systems, e f f e c t i v e n e s s o f a l t e r n a t i v e t r e a t m e n t s ,( i . e . , n o t des igned p r i m a r i l y for drug a b u s e r s ) t r e a t m e n t improvement,treatment for s p e c i f i c drugs of abuse, aftercare and r e l a p s e p r e v e n t i o n ,t r e a t m e n t c a r e e r s , and cohort-based s t u d i e s o f long-term outcomes. The award w i l l have t h e d u a l purpose o f improving t h e q u a l i t yof environmental/occupational medicine c u r r i c u l a and o f f o s t e r i n g g r a d u a t er e s e a r c h careers i n environmental/occupation medicine. Each school of medicine o r os teopathy i n t h e United S t a t e s and i ts p o s s e s s i o n s o r t e r r i t o r i e s is e l i g i b l e t o compete f o r Environmental/ Occupat ional Medicine Academic Award for a p r o j e c t p e r i o d t h a t does n o t exceed f i v e y e a r s and, i f success fu l , t o r e c e i v e t h e Award once o n l y . The number o f new awards made each y e a r w i l l depend on t h e a v a i l a b i l i t y o f funds .
