Between The Lines (BTL)

What is the BTL writing contest?

Between the Lines invites aspiring young writers from Arabic-speaking countries in the Middle

East and North Africa between the ages of 16-19 to the University of Iowa to spend two weeks

honing their creative writing skills and interacting with American students in the same age range.

The international students will be accompanied by adult chaperones. The summer session of

Between the Lines (BTL) will take place in July* of each year. During the two-week BTL program,

students will take classes in English with their American counterparts. They will also participate

in writing workshop (in Arabic) with BTL faculty.

Who can apply?

• Must be between the ages of 16 and 19 as of July of the program participation year.

• Must be proficient in Arabic and English (reading, writing, and speaking).

How To Apply?

Each applicant must provide the following:

7-8 pages of prose and/or poetry written in Arabic (free choice of topic)

7-8 pages of prose and/or poetry written in English (free choice of topic)

The completed application form, including a one-paragraph personal statement (in English)

describing why he/she is interested in participating in BTL.

Copies of passport information pages; passport must be valid at least 6 months after the

program ends.

NOTE: Each poem and/or prose piece must be unique;

• Finalists will be invited for an interview at the embassy. They must bring a copy of their Arabic

and English writing samples to the interview.

When to apply?

The BTL is usually open in January* of each year.

TechGirls

What is TechGirls?

TechGirls is a complement to the TechWomen program and works to echo its goals: supporting

development in the technology field and enabling young women to reach their full potential in

the technology industry. The program emphasizes hands-on skills development in fields such as

programming, robotics, mobile application building, web design, video graphics, and 3D game

design. The program lasts 3 weeks, and is for young women aged 15 to 17. The goals of the

TechGirls program are:

1) To provide a program of academic study of applied technology for girls who already have a

demonstrated aptitude and strong interest in the subject;

2) To empower girls to pursue higher education and careers in technology;

3) To link peers who share interests and abilities;

4) To develop the leadership skills of the participants;

5) To promote mutual understanding among the peoples of the United States and the countries

and territories of the Middle East and North Africa.

Programs that bring US Scholars to Algeria

The English Language Fellow Program sends U.S. educators in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) on ten-month fellowships.

The English Language Specialist Program recruits U.S. academics in the fields of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) / Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and Applied Linguistics for short-term assignments abroad.

Fulbright Scholars Program awards grants to qualified U.S. faculty and professionals, in select disciplines, to engage in short-term collaborative two- to six-week projects at eligible institutions worldwide. Projects are encouraged that contribute to the creation of new academic programs or fields of study at host country institutions of higher education

Virtual Programs over the Internet

The E-Teacher Scholarship Program offers online, graduate level classes to English teaching professionals outside of the United States through the University of Oregon.

Programs for Algerians in Algeria

The English Access Microscholarship Program provides a foundation of English language skills to talented 14 to 18 year-olds from underserved sectors through after-school classes and intensive summer sessions.

El Amel is a public-private partnership between the U.S. Embassy Algiers and Berlitz which provides free intensive language camps to disadvantaged high school students during school vacation periods.
