PREFACE TO OFFICIAL U.S. SENATE AND U.S. CONGRESS ELECTION RESULTS -- 1990

The following official results of United States

Congressional and Senatorial elections held on November 6, 1990,

have been prepared by the Federal Election Commission. The

Commission undertakes this project biennially in order to

respond to public inquiries it receives. At the same time, the

FEC recognizes a need to bring together in one place all of the

Federal election results. The Commission presents this

publication as the fifth in a series designed to provide an

accurate, historical record of Federal election results.

Data is based on official figures provided by State

election officials, and includes several updates through April

1, 1991. If the vote results are modified in the future, as a

result of litigation or discovery of error, the Federal Election

Commission will supply errata supplements as necessary.

The Commission has prepared this document as a research

tool for Commission staff and State election offices.

Additional copies may be ordered from the National Technical

Information Service (NTIS), U.S. Department of Commerce, 5285

Port Royal Road, Springfield, Virginia 22161.

LOUISIANA Section 511 of Title 18 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes of 1950, as amended, provides that a candidate who receives a majority of the votes cast for an office in a primary election is elected. When no candidate achieves a majority the top two vote getters, regardless of party, go on to a runoff. This section also privides that a candidate who is unopposed in the primary is declared elected by the people and his name shall not appear on the ballot in either the primary or general election. Richard Baker of the sixth Congressional District was declared elected under this latter provision. We report here the official vote results of the October 6, 1990 primaries where six congressional district elections were decided by candidates achieving majority votes. The runoff in the second on November 6, 1990 decided the final contest.
