In 1934, Jay N. “Ding” Darling had an idea – create a revenue stamp to be purchased by hunters, and use the proceeds to buy disappearing habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife. With the support of sportsmen, the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp or the “duck stamp” as it’s commonly known was born. Since the sale of the first duck stamp, more than $670 million dollars and 5.2 million acres of wetlands have been preserved. The Federal Duck Stamp has funded the world’s most successful conservation program. This brochure displays the 74 Federal Duck Stamps chosen since 1934. The design for the 75th Duck Stamp will be chosen in October, 2007 at the J. N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge in Florida named for the first duck stamp artist. See if you can pick the 75th anniversary duck stamp!
