Focal Points: PCA’s Market Intelligence released the Labor-Energy Input Survey. The Labor-Energy Input Survey is an annual survey of cement companies, and it details the U.S. and Canadian cement industry’s labor and energy usage. The report focuses on energy consumption by fuel type and contains aggregated historical labor and energy efficiency trends summarized by type of process, size of kiln, and age of plant. Existing home prices appreciated in value across the board from October of 2012, the S&P/Case-Shiller® Home Price Index reported in its 10-city composite. The growth ranged from 4.9% (New York) to 27.1% (Las Vegas) as the housing market recovery continues. Contributing to the growth were tighter inventories – the months’ supply on market dropped to 4.5 in October. The data suggest further room for price improvement as 8 of the Metropolitan Statistical Areas included were still at least 17.8% from their respective peaks.

The ISM manufacturing index fell to 57.0 in December from 57.3 the month prior. The two aforementioned levels were the year’s highest, besting the 2013 average of 53.9 by over 3 points (anything greater than 50 is considered expansionary). The gap between new orders and inventories widened which could mean higher production numbers in the early months of 2014, further strengthening the manufacturing sector of the economy.
Masonry cement consumption jumped 13.8% in October from 2012 and 13.8% month-over-month. It was also up 8.0% year-to-date compared to October of last year.
D
In October, seasonally adjusted U.S. real construction was up 2.7% from year-ago levels, and 0.6% from September. Residential construction climbed 12.2%, but public activity was relatively flat at 0.4%. Nonresidential increased 1.6%.
Portland cement consumption rose 8.9% in October from the same period the previous year. It was up 9.8% from September.
