MessageFrom the President

Betty Beyer

Hello Fellow Retired School Personnel:

Yes, our new name! I hope it will help us reach out and touch our newly retired people in the educational field.

We give so much; the volunteering and programs that we offer should instill joy within our group.

Our Convention was wonderful! The ads that the units produced were unique and entertaining showcasing our many talented members. The humor was enjoyable and the laughter contagious!

As we start our new year, I would ask each and every one of us to ap-proach one or more prospective members, look them in the eye and say, “We need you and your talents and abilities to help us fulfill our motto----‘to serve, not be served.’”

Please plan to attend the workshops in Brookings or Rapid City, so you can get new ideas and hopes.

Thanks for all you do! God loves you and so do I.

a. to promote the social, economic and professional welfare of retired educational staff of the state;

b. to maintain affiliation with the National Retired Teachers Associa-tion (NRTA) Division of AARP and cooperate with it by promoting membership, legislation, national programs and projects of NRTA; and

c. to help members maintain identity with the educational profession and to promote improvements in education.

Thank You for the Donations to the Scholarship Fund● Unit Donations: Brookings Area & Pierre Area● In memory of Jerry Schlekeway from Dennis and Shirley Eisnach

The PEP talk—President Elect Ponderings - Bill Zubke1. Always when asked for a picture, find one at least 10 years old. It makes people

wonder how you can look that good for being your age.

2. Make membership job one. Face it, we’re not getting younger as a group! At-trition is our enemy, and we must fight it where and when we can. To that end, I would challenge each unit to commit to ATR when it comes to the membership spread sheet. That would be Avoid The Red! Break even is okay. Black is even better! Share ideas of how to get the newbies there and the oldies back. We are amazing, and we need to spread the word!

3. Set the goal this year—attend the convention. Bring a friend and while you’re there, make a friend!

4. Wouldn’t it be fun to visit another unit for one of their meetings? You’re always welcome in Watertown—usually the second Thursday of the month, usually a breakfast meeting starting at 8:30 and usually, at the Elks. But being the rebels we are, it would be wise to check ahead. We’ve a couple road trips planned this year, as well as a little wine, cheese, and oldies concert! It’s fun on occasion to mix it up! You can find our contact information on the back page of the newsletter!

5. And speaking of the newsletter, those of you who receive it electronically, why not show it to a friend who might benefit from the same method? Think of the money that could be saved!

6. Always, always, always be glad you have a glass—be it half full or half empty! And know you are loved!

Honorable Mention AwardsHuron Area Retired Teachers for their concern to gather and distribute supplies to Madison, Washington, and Buchanan Schools.Yankton Area Retired Teachers Association for their continued service to the Sack Pack program, scholarship program, and 4-H activities. Oahe Area Retired Teachers for their joy to build more self confidence in the youth in their community. They are always there to help the kids. Redfield Area Retired Teachers for their focus on the Back Pack Program that provides needy students with food and drinks for the weekend. Their work has resulted in better nutrition among the students. Northern Hills Retired Teachers Association for their excitement to help retirees find ways to volunteer within their communities. With Our Youth AwardsWatertown Area Retired Teachers Association – Our members encourage and support the young people in our community with our time and donations. We make a concerted effort to let the current classroom teachers know that we support them. During the past year, we provided homemade goodies for every teacher and staff member (over 400 people) to thank them for their dedication. They stated that their members are very sensitive to the needs of the children, teachers and people in their area. AND they are quick to respond to those needs with their time and their financial support. Black Hills Retired Teachers – The Keystone Living History Classroom is maintained by their members. The retired teachers present the lessons about the pioneer ways of living. After two hours of classes, the class strolls about old Keystone with an historian as their guide. They noted that both youth and adults who participate in this project learn history by experiencing it. Students are touched with a love of learning and adults rekindle their fire for learning.

Benefiting Adults AwardsPhilip Area Retired Teachers Association – This unit is working to preserve the history of the Masonic cemetery and its burial records. Memorial contributions and volunteer labor are making this $21,000 project a lasting success. They remarked that Philip is located along the Deadwood Trail and that is why they felt that it was necessary to preserve the history.Sioux Falls Area Retired Teachers – Their project Lunch is Served is a success. Volunteers packed lunches for the working poor who are attempting to break the chains of poverty. Once the lunch is packed, a short note of encouragement is included. As their website says, the lunch helps the hunger needs as well as builds self-esteem and gives en-couragement. Pierre Area Retired Teachers Association – Their membership stepped up to help with two major food drives. Both drives replenished the Food Pantry which assists 1,943 households. The Post Office Food Drive brought in 7,000 pounds of food. The Boy Scouts food drive collected 4,788 pounds. The number of pallets filled with food was phenomenal! They said that this is their way of helping to fight hunger in the Pierre and Fort Pierre areas.

Awards Ceremony for Community Service for 2014-2015Presented by Joanna JonesLife Reimaged is a way of life for the many volunteers we have in the South Dakota Retired Teachers Associa-tion. Our membership reported 46,892.25 hours for a value of $1,081,804.20. We make a difference in the lives of their communities.

Inspirational Volunteering Awards

Winner Area Retired Personnel – They are proud of the collection of their many activities. Our whole group project of the school at the county museum continues to be rewarding as it has been an on-going project of improvements. The school looks nice inside and out. All ages come to view the history. They said that at whatever task they undertake, the project helps others to know that they have sup-port and community love.

God loves you and so do I.

a. to promote the social, economic and professional welfare of retired educational staff of the state;

b. to maintain affiliation with the National Retired Teachers Associa-tion (NRTA) Division of AARP and cooperate with it by promoting membership, legislation, national programs and projects of NRTA; and

c. to help members maintain identity with the educational profession and to promote improvements in education.
