The official parish chronicle of Saint John Armenian Church, the Torchbearer/Jahagir, a historical archive of the parish, shall provide news of events that have occurred in the life of the parish and announcements of forthcoming activities and significant religious observances and celebrations of the Armenian Church. In addition, this publication will present appropriate articles of interest about Christian Faith, Heritage, Armenian Culture, Social and Outreach ministries, Diocesan and global events in the life of the Armenian Church, her communicants and other members of the Armenian family. It is through the Torchbearer/Jahagir that the active involvement of members of Saint John’s parish will be strengthened and perpetuated for future generations.

What is a Hokehankisd? In the Armenian Church, prayers are offered for the souls of the departed in a service known as Hokehankisd, literally “the resting of the soul.” After a person’s earthly death, their soul and body are transmuted to the embrace of God and His eternal keeping until, as we say in the Nicene Creed, “the Final Judgment of souls and bodies and the Resurrection of the dead” when Christ the Judge will come again. We ask God to remember the departed in their state of resting from earthly life --- “asleep in the Lord.” We, who are “alive in the Lord,” ask God to “grant forgiveness to your servants who have fallen asleep, when you come to judge those whom you created.” Our prayers for the departed are an expression of love, unity, and hope. Though physically not with us, their spirits remain within our hearts and minds, and their souls are with Christ forever until the Final Judgment day. In the Hokehankisd Service the priest asks God to: “Glorify them and reckon them with the company of your saints at your right hand,” where we hope also to be one day.

“We, the priests and people, entrust you, O merciful and good Lord, with those who have fallen asleep in faith, receive us who have the same hope.”

The remembrance of the departed souls in the tradition of the Armenian Orthodox Church is our act of faith acknowledging that the spirit of the departed one is never corrupted by death nor forgotten, but always and forever is eternally alive with Christ God and in us with every prayerful thought of the departed. This is how the spirit of life from God transcends time, place and condition. How are Hokehankisd prayers requested? Prayers of Hokehankisd should be requested no later than the Wednesday preceding the Sunday you wish them to be offered. As is custom, the requests will be appropriately printed in the Sunday Bulletin the day Hokehankisd is offered. Any names requested after Wednesday may be accepted and will be remembered if presented before the singing of the Hayr Mer (Our Father). Therefore, if you wish a printed listing, please make sure you phone the parish office no later than Wednesday, as the Sunday Bulletin goes to print on Thursday. When are prayers offered for the departed? Prayers for the souls of the departed may be offered at any time after a person’s earthly death. It is the custom to ask for prayers on or about the 40th day following a person’s passing. After that, prayers may be offered annually on or close to the anniversary of the person’s passing. Prayers for the souls of the departed may be offered on Sundays and weekdays as well. As the faithful gather on Sundays for the Divine Liturgy, it is most common that this is the day requiem prayers are offered. The names of the departed are recited inaudibly by the celebrant during the Divine Liturgy as part of his private prayers at the heart of the Holy Eucharist, just before the singing of the Hayr Mer. Later, during the Hokehankisd Service, the names of the departed are read aloud by the celebrant.

Remembering and praying for the soul as it sleeps in the Lord during our lifetime acknowledges that the spirit that once gave life to the soul that rests is still alive with God and is truly worthy to be remembered, linked to us in prayer, a ‘living communion’ with God, an eternal bond between heaven and earth. Never forget, always remember, and in that way we live eternally.

We the Pastor and Parish Council are humbled by the generosity and good will offered to the parish of St. John in loving remembrance of the departed souls who have entered their eternal rests, as well as the genuine concern and outpouring for the many gifts of time, talent and treasure of many who have noted and acted upon our appeals. Your responses to the needs of our ever-growing parish have helped in keeping our spiritual home afloat upon the crests of turbulent waves during this past year of economic stress which has affected virtually every sector of our lives. The personal sacrifices you have made for the ministry and on-going work of our Armenian Church have certainly demonstrated where your hearts, minds, souls and strength lay. We are certain that as we step into a new year, the horizon ahead of us will be flooded with continued light; those rays of hope

and promise from Christ our Lord will guide us onward to do his work and will upon this earth. We thank you one and all and pray for a prosperous and healthy New Year for your families and for our beloved parish of St. John the Baptist Armenian Church of Greater Detroit.

and to You is befitting glory, dominion and honor, now and always and forever and ever.
