U.S. REPRESENTATIVE JOHN LEWISFebruary 21, 1940 – July 17, 2020

Rep. John Lewis (5th Cong. District of Georgia), a politician and civil rights leader, was inspired by the activism surrounding the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the words of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., which he heard on radio broadcasts. Since that time, he remained at the vanguard of progressive social movements and the human rights struggle in the United States. Rep. Lewis was elected to Congress in November 1986 and served as U.S. Representative of Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District until his death.

While studying at Fisk University, Rep. Lewis organized sit-in demonstrations at segregated lunch counters in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1961, he volunteered to participate in the Freedom Rides, which challenged segregation at interstate bus terminals across the South. Lewis risked his life on those rides many times by simply sitting in seats reserved for white patrons and was severely beaten by angry mobs and arrested by police for challenging the injustice of Jim Crow segregation in the South.

During the height of the Movement, from 1963 to 1966, Lewis was named Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which he helped form. SNCC was largely responsible for organizing student activism in the Movement, including sit-ins and other activities. He coordinated SNCC efforts to organize voter registration drives and community action programs during the Mississippi Freedom Summer. On March 7, 1965, Lewis helped spearhead one of the most seminal moments of the Civil Rights Movement when he and Hosea Williams led over 600 peaceful, orderly protestors across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, to demonstrate the need for voting rights in Alabama. They intended to march from Selma to Montgomery to demonstrate the need for voting rights in the state. They were attacked by Alabama state troopers in a brutal confrontation that became known as “Bloody Sunday.”

Rep. Lewis was the author of several books and articles and has been recognized for his work in the social justice and civil rights arenas, receiving many awards, including the only John F. Kennedy “Profile in Courage Award” for Lifetime Achievement ever granted by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, and the highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, presented by President Barack Obama.

Our prayers are extended to Rep. Lewis’ son, John-Miles Lewis, and the entire family. May he rest among the greatest ancestors of our time.

Hey Trinitarians, we know a lot of sheltering at home is still happening, even as we’ve moved into the summer season. The Artists in Residence ministry is here to help liven up your summer with a little “shelter at home art”! Members of the Artists in Residency Ministry will deliver FREE adult art workshops. You also learn the basics of light source, value, shading, and composition, taught by a nationally-awarded artist! August 7th: Painting Fundamentals with Patrick Thompson Ever wanted to know how to take a batch of paint colors, and create magic? This workshop will start you on your way!

Imani Village Green Health Advocate

Basic Functions: Trinity United Church of Christ, Imani Village, Imani Works!, The Nature Conservancy, Advocate Health Care, the University of Illinois at Chicago, The Morton Arboretum, and the U.S. Forest Service have established a program that prepares emerging professionals for a career in urban conservation or community health, with a special focus on the skills needed to transform communities into healthier places to live. We are seeking eight individuals to form a team of Imani Village “Green Health Advocates” (IGHA) who will be responsible for promoting the health of people and nature in Chicago’s South Side.

We are seeking 4 individuals to be “conservation health advocates” who will: 1) Evaluate the health of natural resources (e.g., trees, greenspaces) of Chicago’s South Side; 2) Examine inequities in community access to natural resources; 3) Develop and implement a plan for equitable access to nature in target neighborhoods within Chicago’s South Side, and 4) Educate the community on their role in protecting nature to improve human health

We are seeking 4 individuals to be “community health advocates” who will: 1) Conduct patient assessments through interviews and other means; 2) Promote the health services of Advocate’s Trinity Hospital and Advocate Medical Group at Imani Village; 3) Conduct a community health assessment, addressing the social needs for Chicago’s South Side, and 4) Educate the community on their role in protecting nature to improve human health.

REV. DR. C.T. VIVIANJuly 30, 1924 – July 17, 2020

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8)

Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian, spiritual leader and strategist of the Civil Rights Movement, is known for his work as a field general for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (S.C.L.C.), where he served as the National Director for over 85 of its chapters. He is considered a “disciplined advocate of nonviolence” and served on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement. Dr. Vivian’s work in Birmingham, Alabama helped to enact the Civil Rights Bill and in Selma, the Voting Rights Bill.

Dr. Vivian served as Dean of The Urban Institute at The Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, GA. In addition, his work included training ministers and developing the urban curriculum for seminaries throughout the nation at the Urban Training Center in Chicago. He is also credited with launching Vision (later known as Upward Bound), an educational program that assisted over 700 Alabama students to attend college on scholarship.

Dr. Vivian is the founder of the C.T. Vivian Leadership Institute, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia, which trains and educates the new generation of grass-roots leaders inspired to mobilize a constituency. In honor of his vision and leadership in the fight for justice, President Barack Obama awarded Dr. Vivian with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in November of 2013.
