What is a RIGHT?

• A RIGHT is something that the LAW says we CAN do.

• In Britain we have the right leave school when we are 16 or to vote when we are 18.

• Turn to page 53 in your USA book and make notes on the right to carry guns in the USA.

How easy is it to get a gun in the USA?

• It is not very difficult to get a gun in the USA. In most States as long as you are over 21, you only need a driving licence or some other form of identification to buy a gun. In fact, it is easier to get a gun than it is to get a driving licence!

AIM 2 How easy is it to get a gun in the USA?

Write a short paragraph about what you have to do in order to buy a gun in the USA

The ‘Right to Carry’ Law

• Most states in the USA now have ‘Right to Carry’ laws

• These laws only apply to Gun Shop sales – not other ways of getting a gun

Take notes on the ‘Right to Carry’ laws in the USA – see P53/54

What is a PRESSURE GROUP?

• A pressure group is a group that puts pressure on governments and other organisations to make changes.

• In the USA they are called Interest Groups

AIM 3 What are the views of PRESSURE GROUPS on the right to carry a gun?

• In America the NRA (National Rifle Association) is a pressure group that protects the right of Americans to carry a gun.

Activities

• Make notes on the National Rifle Association (NRA) from P53

AIM 4 Guns and Crime in the USA

• Make notes from the Factfile on P55

• Do Activities 12 and 14 on P56
