INTRODUCTION Universal Serial Bus are the standard connection for

a variety of electronic peripherals with the PC.

The latest version of USB is named as USB 3.0 or SUPERSPEED USB announced by Pat Gelsinger at the Intel Developer forum.

Nicknamed super speed USB because of the significant speed improvements over existing USB specifications.

HISTORY There have been 3 versions released prior to 3.0

1) USB 1.0 in January 1996- data rates of 1.5 Mbps.

2) USB 1.1 in September 1998-first widely used version of USB provides 12 Mbps.

3) HIGH SPEED USB OR USB 2.0

Released with speeds of 480 Mbps. Released in 2000.

NOWSUPERSPEED USB OR USB 3.0

Predicted speed of 5 Gbps. Developed on November 17,2008.

WHY THE UPGRADE?

Mainly the need for faster transfer rates in devices such as hard drives, flash card readers & DVD, Blue-ray & HD DVD optical drives.

User applications demanding a higher performance connection between the PC & peripherals.

USB 3.0 FEATURES

10X performance increases over USB 2.0; Low power consumption; Hot swappable-easily plug & play; Compatibility -full duplex; Longer maximum cable length. Backward compatible

-USB 2.0 device will work with USB 3.0 host

-USB 3.0 device will work with USB 2.0 host

MAXIMUM USEFUL DISTANCE USB 1.1 maximum cable length is 3 meters(9.8 ft).

USB 2.0 maximum cable length is 5 meters(16 ft).

USB 3.0 cable length is available with following transfer rates:-

15 gigabits per second (Gbps) at 1 meter; 10 Gbps at 2 meters; 5 Gbps at 5 meters. 10

USB 3.0 CONNECTOR

Std A - Same interface as USB 2.0 Standard-A connector, but with added pins for USB 3.0 Super-Speed signals.

Std B - Defined for relatively large, stationary peripherals such as hard drives and printers.

-Visually different from USB 2.0 Standard-B connector.

THE FUTURE-SMART PHONES AND TABLETS WILL HAVE USB 3.0 PORTS IN 2012

In the future, smart phones will have a USB 3.0 device port acting as a peripheral to sync with your laptop.

HP has said it will bring USB 3.0 to a majority of its high-performance and business laptops later this year.

13

Page 14: Usb 3.0

The USB Standards Organization announced in Jan 2012 that USB 3.0 SS ports would be making their way to smart phones and tablet devices this year, and most on the market by the end of 2012 would support the 3.0 standard.

Intel integrates USB 3.0 into chipset.

Windows 8 begins USB 3.0 support.

CONCLUSION

The USB 3.0 is supporting a speed of about 5 Gbps i.e. ten times faster than 2.0 version;

So hopefully by the help of this Super Speed data transfer rate the USB 3.0 will be replacing many of the connectors in the future.
