1 Big Fisherman Cove and Marine ConservationIn the mid-1980s, the State of California established Big Fisherman Cove, the area adjacent to the Wrigley Marine Science Center, as a Marine Life Refuge, a designation that protects habitats and organisms and gives sexually mature fish a chance to grow to full size. (Fully-grown fish are known to produce more offspring than smaller ones.) It is part of the larger Blue Cavern State Marine Conservation Area. In Big Fisherman Cove, anchoring and fishing are prohibited, which helps protect the ocean floor and scientific experiments deployed in the cove. Protection of marine habitats and species within Big Fisherman Cove enhances the opportunities for research and education at the Wrigley Marine Science Center.
2 Hyperbaric ChamberThe USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber is an emergency medical facility for treatment of scuba diving accidents. The chamber is staffed by dedicated volunteers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and can treat multiple patients simultaneously. The chamber is an extension of the Department of Emergency Medicine of the LA County/USC Medical Center. Funding comes from the County of Los Angeles and donations from private individuals. The USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber is dedicated to treatment, education and research and has served the southern California diving community since 1974.
3 Deer Valley Trail and Road to Two HarborsThe town of Two Harbors is a 2-mile walk from WMSC—turn right when you reach the T-intersection with the main road to continue into town. As you leave the Wrigley Institute, you will also find the start of the Deer Valley Trail on your left. This low impact interpretive trail was designed by USC Environmental Studies students. Walk ~1-mile through island chaparral and grassland habitats to see a variety of Catalina's native and introduced species. The trail eventually connects to the main island road; hike back the way you came, or take a right and follow the road into Two Harbors. Look out for Catalina quail and the Catalina Island fox along the way!
4 Laboratory Building The first floor of the Lab Building contains offices and an 88 seat lecture hall. The second floor is assigned to visiting scientists, graduate fellows and education groups of all ages. It also houses our Library which is equipped with a video teleconferencing system allowing meeting and classroom accessibility to USC's University Park Campus. The third floor is reserved for long-term research studies conducted by USC faculty researchers and their students. The third floor is open only to researchers and escorted guests.
5 Interpretive Center and Touch TankDon’t feel like swimming today? No problem. Several inhabitants of our marine reserve are waiting to meet you at our interpretive center. After washing your hands (think of it as taking off your shoes to avoid tracking stuff into other people’s houses), please feel free to gently touch the plants and animals in the central tank. Field guides are available to help you learn about these amazing organisms.
6 Administrative Offices and Gift ShopStill curious?! Stop by the Administrative Offices to arrange a private tour or pick up materials about programming or our support group Friends of the Wrigley Institute. You can also pick up WIES swag in our gift shop!
7 Cottage HousingThis cluster of four cottages provides housing for visiting students, faculty and additional guests. The cottages are named for benefactors of the Wrigley Institute.
8 Blue Cavern Nature TrailThis .7-mile trail crosses a south-facing slope and coastal sage scrub plant community. The view from the top of Blue Cavern Ridge is worth the gentle climb, providing a compelling view of Los Angeles from a very different perspective, and a vista of Catalina’s rugged coastline. Look up for bald eagles and look down for whales and dolphins. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Wrigley Family and the Catalina Island Conservancy for preserving this treasure! The trail ultimately circles down the ridge and ends at the Cottage Housing.
9 Residence and Dining HallOur Residence Hall includes eleven furnished apartments: nine one-bedroom units and two two-bedroom units. All have spacious living rooms and full kitchens. We also have
26 dormitory rooms: 18 are in our Residence Hall (some with shared baths, some with private baths) and eight more are in two dorm cottages. The Dining Hall is open daily and features an outdoor patio—a favorite spot for watching the sunset.
10 George and MaryLou Boone Center for Science and Environmental LeadershipThis complex of six cottages surrounding a central plaza was built with a lead gift from George and MaryLou Boone in 2004, and it carries their name in acknowledgement of their commitment and support. The Boone Center is designed as a “Camp David for the environment” where scientists and policy makers meet to discuss scientific and environmental questions and work towards positive solutions. The Boone Center can accommodate groups up to 50 people.
Rest RoomsRest rooms are located at the Dive Lockers, near 2 , on the second floor of the Lab Building 4 and in the Dining Hall 9 .
Please remember this is a working research station with active, on-going experiments. While the Administrative Offices 6 and the Library 4 are open to the public, all other buildings require a staff escort. Please call (310) 510-0811 for further information.
