The pre-law program at USCB provides students with a comprehensive program of study including a rigorous undergraduateeducation and a sequence of courses to strengthen their application to law school. In addition, a pre-law advisor assists eachstudent personally with LSAT preparation, the law school application process, and supporting internship experiences.

The pre-law program offers USCB graduates a competitive edge in applying to law school. At the same time, the course ofstudy empowers graduates to succeed in law school and become thoughtful professionals in their chosen field of practice.

The pre-law program features small classes that afford individual attention, attentive faculty scholars recognized for theirprofessional involvement and collaborative endeavors, and the flexibility to accommodate individual student needs. The programis enhanced by internships offering practical experience working with members of the legal profession in the Lowcountry.

Typical Program CoursesCombining pre-law with a history major givesstudents more choices in elective courses. Historymajors traditionally fare well on the LSAT exam.For this reason, pre-law is integrated with the historymajor in the example below. However, USCB studentspursuing other majors are encouraged to integratethem with the pre-law program.

In addition to the requirements of the history major, thepre-law program includes an additional course in logic,a political science course on American government orthe U.S. Constitution, American Legal History, and thecourse, History of Law and Society.

Pre-Law AdvisorTimothy M. James, Ph.D.Assistant Professor of History

Timothy M. James joined USCB asan Assistant Professor of History in2006. He teaches courses in WorldCivilizations, Modern Latin America,Cultural History, Comparative Slavery,and the History of Human Rights. His current research interestsinclude Mexican constitutional history, Mexican liberalism,cultural and social theory, Mexican migration, and the historyand theory of human rights. Dr. James spends his summersconducting research in the Mexican Supreme Court archivein Mexico City. He recently published an article, “LiberalJurisprudence, Labor Tribunals and Mexico’s Supreme Court,1917-1924” in the Law and History Review. Dr. James earneda B.A. at Appalachian State University, an M.A. at the Universityof Chicago, and a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago.

Pre-law advisors will counsel students on what qualificationslaw schools are seeking, how to prepare properly to score wellon the LSAT exam and how to succeed in law school. Additionalstudent advice and counsel will be provided by HistoryDepartment faculty members and an advisory board of presentand former members of the legal profession in the Lowcountry.
