Subject: Re: [september17discuss] can we try to come up with one demand?

    Date: Wednesday, September 28, 2011 7:16:52 PM

I disagree, the dictatorship of financial capital and corporate power over people'sdaily lives is a much more complex affair than ousting a dictator. There is no one

demand that will solve this issue, because financial capital is entangled with peopledaily lives much more than we think. Workers' pension funds, state and federalbudgets are now attached to the stock market.

Further, in this country millions of people have their savings invested in equities.Even more, thanks to the end of the separation between commercial banking andinvestment banking, all our savings are invested on the stock market even when wedon't choose to. If you think the money you see (or don't see) on your bank accountare real, you are dreaming. They are all pumped in the stock market to keep thevampire alive, and they could vanish overnight, as this trader, Alessio Rastani, candidly put it a couple of days ago on BBC News:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aC19fEqR5bA

This is the reason why reintroducing Glass-Steagall would be a very importantmeasure. I have posted several sensible demands to this list several times, but everyday or so this conversation begins anew... Saying "We want a democracy, not acorporatocry" will not solve any of these issues. This is a delusional stance and evenif the movement keeps growing, eventually it will have to face the question of whatpolitical demands to articulate, what are its priorities, what kind of alliances tomake, etc. At the moment, there is no real political discussion going on and t thislack of ideas and debate will have a negative impact in the long run.

Again, these are seven points I think we should begin with:

    - Stop gambling people's savings on Wall Street. Reinstate the 1933 Glass-Steagall

Act that separates investment banking from commercial banking.

    - Corporations are not and will never be people. End corporate personhood under the

    14th Amendment.

    - Tax all financial transactions as we tax all salable goods through. Introduce a global

tax on all financial transactions now.

    - Housing is a human right. Halt all foreclosures due to predatory lending and unpaid

    medical bills.

    - Pair the taxes on long-term capital gains to the income tax. Repeal the Tax

    Reconciliation Act now.

    - Ban all corporate funding to political candidates. Enable each taxpayer and citizen

to donate the same amount of money to a candidate or party of his or her choice.

Well thats a fine Idea but only works if there are enough people. 100 is NOTenough. More need to feel inspired and get behind it. I keep getting asked what its

about. we need a firm answer. OTHER then "we are the 99" (which is a goodmessage, but if you repeat it to often you end up sounding like Borg.

This is the reason why reintroducing Glass-Steagall would be a veryimportant measure. I have posted several sensible demands to this list

several times, but every day or so this conversation begins anew... Saying"We want a democracy, not a corporatocry" will not solve any of theseissues. This is a delusional stance and even if the movement keepsgrowing, eventually it will have to face the question of what politicaldemands to articulate, what are its priorities, what kind of alliances tomake, etc. At the moment, there is no real political discussion going onand t this lack of ideas and debate will have a negative impact in the longrun.

Again, these are seven points I think we should begin with:

    - Stop gambling people's savings on Wall Street. Reinstate the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act that separates investment banking from commercial banking.

    - Corporations are not and will never be people. End corporate personhood

    under the 14th Amendment.

    - Tax all financial transactions as we tax all salable goods through.

Introduce a global tax on all financial transactions now.

    - Housing is a human right. Halt all foreclosures due to predatory lending

    and unpaid medical bills.

    - Pair the taxes on long-term capital gains to the income tax. Repeal the

    Tax Reconciliation Act now.

    - Ban all corporate funding to political candidates. Enable each taxpayer

and citizen to donate the same amount of money to a candidate or party of

    his or her choice.

    - Radical reform of the electoral system. Enable new political formations to

compete on an equal foot with the two major parties.

Again, these are seven points I think we should begin with:

    - Stop gambling people's savings on Wall Street. Reinstate the 1933 Glass-

    - Corporations are not and will never be people. End corporate personhood

    - Housing is a human right. Halt all foreclosures due to predatory lending andunpaid medical bills.

    - Pair the taxes on long-term capital gains to the income tax. Repeal the Tax

    - Ban all corporate funding to political candidates. Enable each taxpayer and

citizen to donate the same amount of money to a candidate or party of his or

Make is broad so many many things can come underneath as the millionof national conversations erupt, something like: end corporate control isbroad and simple-- so for braod and simple and you can have the fieldopen for a million possibilities of change.

There is no one demand that will solve this issue, becausefinancial capital is entangled with people daily lives much more thanwe think. Workers' pension funds, state and federal budgets are nowattached to the stock market.

Further, in this country millions of people have their savings invested inequities. Even more, thanks to the end of the separation between

commercial banking and investment banking, all our savings areinvested on the stock market even when we don't choose to. If youthink the money you see (or don't see) on your bank account are real, you are dreaming. They are all pumped in the stock market to keepthe vampire alive, and they could vanish overnight, as this trader,

Alessio Rastani, candidly put it a couple of days ago on BBC News:

This is the reason why reintroducing Glass-Steagall would be a veryimportant measure. I have posted several sensible demands to this listseveral times, but every day or so this conversation begins anew...

Saying "We want a democracy, not a corporatocry" will not solve anyof these issues. This is a delusional stance and even if the movementkeeps growing, eventually it will have to face the question of whatpolitical demands to articulate, what are its priorities, what kind ofalliances to make, etc. At the moment, there is no real politicaldiscussion going on and t this lack of ideas and debate will have anegative impact in the long run.

Again, these are seven points I think we should begin with:

    - Stop gambling people's savings on Wall Street. Reinstate the 1933

Glass-Steagall Act that separates investment banking from commercialbanking.

    - Corporations are not and will never be people. End corporate

    personhood under the 14th Amendment.

    - Tax all financial transactions as we tax all salable goods through.

Introduce a global tax on all financial transactions now.
