USDOTGrant Funding Assistance
Many of our clients have infrastructure projects that could have substantial impacts on communities and the economy, but are held back by gaps in funding. To help close these funding gaps so that projects of regional and national significance can move forward, the U.S. Congress appropriates money to the U.S. Department of Transportation for two competitive grant programs: TIGER and FASTLANE. TIGER (originally, Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grants) has been assisting surface transportation projects for eight rounds to date; FASTLANE (Fostering Advancements in Shipping and Transportation for the Long-term Achievement of National Efficiencies) is a new program under the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act designed to help fund critical freight and highway projects across the country. FASTLANE has been authorized through Fiscal Year 2020.
Since 2009, USDOT has awarded almost $5.1 billion in TIGER grants. For the first year of FASTLANE grants, USDOT selected 18 projects to be awarded nearly $760 million for transportation projects that will have significant impact on the nation, a metropolitan area, or a region. These funds will help close the gap for transportation projects that promise to help achieve critical national objectives, such as greater economic competitiveness, improved mobility, and access to healthcare, education and employment opportunities, as well as increased safety, livability, and environmental sustainability. Both programs are highly competitive, with hundreds of agencies requesting funds—requests can exceed total available funds by 30 times or more.
We have supported nearly 50 projects in successful requests for TIGER or FASTLANE grants. Together these projects have received $1.2 billion in federal funds for building key transportation projects. This accounts for 20 percent of the total construction
