conserve water

Water house plants and outdoor plants using water from the dehumidifier or rain

barrel when ever possible.


Start a patio or pot garden for fresh tomatoes, peppers or herbs.


Include clean air plants in your house to remove toxins, increase oxygen levels and provide colour

to a room.



Use a power bar to connect all electronic equipment in one room and

then flip the switch off to eliminate “phantom power”





In the spring and fall when nights are cooler, open your windows to exchange air and cool the house without using the

air conditioner.


Use a ceiling fan to recirculate air instead of the air conditioner.


Blinds on windows are good at keeping heat out in the summer

and heat inside in the winter. (Especially thermal ones!)



Turn the thermostat up a few degrees in the summer and down a few degrees in the winter to help save on heating and

cooling costs.





Install motion sensors on your lights or turn the lights off in a room if you leave. (Even if you will be going back in just a

minute)


Buy materials, products and groceries in bulk or that have less

packaging wherever possible.


Reuse shopping bags or purchase reusable bags from the store to

carry everything.



Bring compost home instead of throwing it out at school.





Use containers instead of plastic wrap or bags to bring your lunch to school.


Open the windows in your car instead of using the air

conditioner.


Recycle refuse where ever possible and use garbage cans regularly to dispose of waste on

the go.



Organize a garbage cleanup in your neighbourhood.





Drink water from the fountain or invest in a reusable water bottle instead of

purchasing disposable plastic water bottles


Carpool to and from school, work, family functions etc.


Bike, walk or take the bus where ever possible.



Do your homework during the day time in a naturally lit room so you don’t need

to turn on the lights.





Time your showers to less than 5 minutes.


Make your meals at home (including lunches for school)

instead of eating out.


Create something ingenious with your recyclable materials.



Bring old clothes, toys etc. to GoodWill or have a garage sale to eliminate

clutter.





Use natural cleaning supplies (vinegar, baking soda, water etc.) or buy

biodegradable cleansers and soaps.


Write and print on both sides of the paper (and ask your teachers for permission to do the same on

assignments and tasks).


Plant a tree every year in your own yard or donate one to your

local community.



Use the dishwasher, clothes dryer, etc. at night and use the low/cool

temperature settings where ever possible.





Hang clothes out to dry or air out instead of using the clothes dryer.


Keep up with your vehicle’s maintenance schedule.


Change/clean the air filter on the furnace regularly.



Remove lint from the dryer trap every time you dry a new load.





Change to compact fluorescent bulbs or replace them as the incandescent bulbs

burn out.


Adjust the thermostat when you are away (school, work, night) or

use a programmable one to adjust the temperature automatically.


Buy locally grown products and produce so they don’t have to

travel as far.



Install an aerator on your faucet and low flowing showerheads in your home.





Do not leave the water running down the drain while you are washing dishes.


Store a pitcher of drinking water in the fridge so you don’t have to

wait for the water from the faucet to turn cold.


Use cloth rags from old clothes for cleaning.



If you have older windows/doors recaulk them and/or install new

weatherstripping.





Avoid single use items where ever possible. If you must use them, choose paper alternatives (cups, plates etc.) or ones with a recyling symbol on them.


Use a bathroom exhaust fan with a timer or open a window to ventilate moisture from your

home.


Don’t let your car, lawn mower etc. run idle. Turn off in between

periods of use.



Use a push mower.





Combine errands to make car trips count.


Car tires should be kept at the correct pressure to reduce gas

usage, unnecessary auto exhaust, and wear and tear on the tires.


Use the back of pages printed with errors as scrap paper for grocery

lists or notepads.



Purchase school supplies that are made from recyclable materials.





Borrow books and movies from the library or your friends instead of

purchasing them yourself. If you have purchased books you no longer

read consider donating them to

a local library.


Plan the week’s worth of meals and go grocery shopping once.


Use pens and pencils that do not “bleed” through your paper so you

can use both sides.



Make new candles by melting old wax candle stubs





Make recyling easier by putting it in a convenient location or having separate

containers for different types of recyclables. For example, smaller bins

kept under the kitchen sink may

encourage them to be used more


Rent a plot in a community garden to grow your own fresh

vegetables. Donate what you will not use to food banks and

shelters.


Pick up litter as you walk to school, home or work.
