RANGE SAFETY
•Do not heat unopened containers. They could explode. The hotcontents could cause burns andcontainer particles could causeinjury.
•Use only cookware approved foroven use. Follow cookwaremanufacturer’s instructions, espe-cially when using glass or plasticcookware.
•Do not store flammable materialson or near the range. The fumescould create an explosion and/orfire hazard.
When using the cooktop•Do not cook on a broken ceramicglass cooktop. If cooktop shouldbreak, cleaning solutions andspillovers could penetrate thebroken cooktop and create a riskof electrical shock. Contact aqualified technician immediately.
•Select a pan with a flat bottomthat is about the same size as thesurface unit. If pan is smaller thanthe surface unit, some of theheating element will be exposedand could result in the igniting ofclothing or pot holders. Correctpan size also improves cookingefficiency.
•Check to be sure glass cookwareis safe for use on the range. Onlycertain types of glass, glass-ceramic, ceramic, earthenware,or other glazed cookware aresuitable for cooktops withoutbreaking due to the suddenchange in temperature.
•Never leave surface unitsunattended at high heat settings.A boilover could result and causesmoking and greasy spilloversthat could ignite.
•Turn pan handles inward, butnot over other surface units. This will help reduce the chanceof burns, igniting of flammablematerials, and spills due tobumping of the pan.
When using the oven•Always position oven rack(s) indesired location while oven iscool. If a rack must be removedwhile oven is hot, do not let potholder contact hot heatingelement in oven.
•Use care when opening ovendoor. Let hot air or steam escapebefore removing or replacing food.

Using Your RangeTo get the best cooking results, you should use your range the correct way. This section tellsyou what you need to know to use your range safely and efficiently.
Using the surface cooking areasPush in control knobs before turningthem to a setting. You can set them any-where between HI and OFF.
Surface cooking area markersThe solid dot in the surface cooking areamarker shows which surface cooking area isturned on by that knob.
Hot surface indicator lightThe Hot Surface Indicator Light on thecooktop surface will glow when any of thesurface cooking areas are turned on. TheIndicator Light will continue to glow as longas the surface cooking areas are too hot totouch, even after they are turned off.
wWARNING
Fire HazardTurn off all controls when donecooking.Failure to do so can result in death, fire, or burns.
Until you become familiar with thesettings, use the chart at right as a guide. For best results, start cooking at the highsetting; then turn the control knob down tocontinue cooking.

10
USING YOUR RANGE
Using the ceramic glasscooktopCooking on the ceramic glass cooktopis almost the same as cooking on coilelements. There are, however, a fewdifferences:• The surface cooking area will glow red
when the element is turned on. You willsee the element cycling on and off – evenon the HI setting – to help the area stay atthe temperature setting you chose.
• Do not cook foods directly on thecooktop.
• Do not cook popcorn that comes inprepackaged aluminum containers onthe cooktop. The container could leavealuminum marks on the cooktop thatcannot be removed completely.
• Lift pots and pans onto and off of thecooktop. Sliding pots and pans on thecooktop could leave marks that aredifficult to remove or could leavepermanent marks.
• Dropping a heavy or hard object on thecooktop could crack it. Be careful whenusing heavy skillets and large pots. Donot store jars or cans above the cooktop.
• Do not use the cooktop as a cuttingboard.
• Do not allow anything that could melt, such as plastic or aluminum foil, to comein contact with the cooktop while it is hot.
• Sugary spills and soils can cause pitting.See “Cleaning the cooktop” in the “Caringfor Your Range” section.
• Wiping off the cooktop before and aftereach use will help keep the surface freefrom stains and give you the most evenheating. See “Cleaning the cooktop” inthe “Caring for Your Range” section.
Cookware tips• Use the correct cookware to prevent
damage to the surface cooking area, cooktop, wiring, and surrounding areas.
• If the cookware is too small for thesurface cooking area or the bottom is notflat, the surface cooking area could stayglowing red for an extended length of timecausing damage to the range.
• If you start cooking on high, it is impor-tant to turn the control down to a lowersetting to complete cooking.
• Flat-bottomed cookware, including woks, canners, and teakettles, will provide bettercontact with the surface cooking area andprovide the best cooking results.
• Warped, dented, and ribbed-bottomedcookware can result in uneven cookingdue to incomplete contact with the surfacecooking area.
• Cookware that has been designed withslightly indented bottoms or small expan-sion channels can be used.
• Choose medium to heavy gauge(thickness) cookware.
• The pan material (type of metal orglass) affects how quickly and evenlythe pan heats.
• Check for rough spots on the bottom ofyour metal or glass cookware which couldscratch the ceramic glass surface.
• Make sure the bottoms of pots and pansare clean and dry before using them. Foodand water particles left on the bottoms canleave deposits on the cooktop when it isheated.
NOTE: Do not leave empty cookware, orcookware which has boiled dry, on a hotsurface cooking area. The cookware couldoverheat causing damage to the cookwareor surface cooking area.
11
Home canning information• Use flat-bottomed canners/pans for
best results.
• Use the largest surface cooking area forbest results. Also, use a canner/pan thatyou can center over the surface cookingarea and that does not extend more than1 inch outside the surface cooking area.Large diameter canners/pans, if notcentered correctly, trap heat and cancause damage to the cooktop.
• Do not place your canner on 2 surfacecooking areas at the same time. Too muchheat will build up and damage the cooktop.
Positioning racks and pansGeneral guidelines• Before turning on the oven, place oven
racks where you need them.• To move rack(s), lift rack(s) at front and
pull out.• Be sure the rack(s) is level.• Use pot holders or oven mitts to protect
your hands, if rack(s) must be moved whilethe oven is hot.
• For baking/roasting with 1 rack, placethe rack so the top of the food will becentered in the oven.
• When baking/roasting on 2 racks ,position racks in oven to allow goodcirculation of air around all the food.
Bakeware tips• When baking with insulated cookie
sheets or baking pans, place them in thebottom third of the oven. You may need toincrease the recommended baking times,so test for doneness before removing fromthe oven.
USING YOUR RANGE
• When using ovenproof glassware ordark bakeware, reduce the oven tempera-ture by 25°F, but use the same bakingtime. Because these pans absorb heat, producing darker bottom browning andcrispier crusts, place the rack in the centerof the oven. When baking pies and bread, you can use the temperature suggested inthe recipe.
Rack placement for specificfoods:
RACK POSITIONLowest level or2nd level frombottom
2nd level frombottom
2nd or 3rd levelfrom bottom
FOODFrozen pies, largeroasts, turkeys, angelfood cakes
Bundt cakes, mostquick breads, yeastbreads, casseroles, meats
Cookies, biscuits,muffins, cakes,nonfrozen pies
• Start with hot water. This reduces the timethe control is set on high. Reduce the heatsetting to the lowest position needed tokeep water boiling.
• When canning for long periods of time, alternate use of the surface cooking areasbetween batches to allow the areas to cooldown, or prepare food in small batches.
• Refer to your canner manual for specificinstructions.
NOTE: For recommended rack placementwhen broiling, see the “Broiling rack positionchart.”

For best air circulation
Hot air must circulate around the pans in theoven for even heat to reach all parts of theoven. This results in better baking.• Place the pans so that one is not directly
over the other.• For best results, allow 11⁄2 to 2 inches
of space around each pan and betweenpans and oven walls.
• Use only one cookie sheet in the oven ata time.
Using aluminum foil for baking
Use aluminum foil to catch spilloversfrom pies or casseroles:• Place the foil on the oven rack below the
rack with the food. Turn up foil edges andmake sure foil is about 1 inch larger allaround than the dish holding the food.
• Do not cover the entire rack with alumi-num foil. It will reduce air circulation andcause poor cooking results.
• Do not line oven bottom with foil or otherliners. It could affect the quality of yourbaking.
Use the following as a guide to deter minewhere to place the pans:1 panPlace in the center of the oven rack.
2 pansPlace in opposite corners of the oven rack.
3 or 4 pansPlace in opposite corners on each ovenrack. Stagger pans so no pan is directlyover another.

Roasting tips• For even cooking, place the meat on a
rack in a shallow pan. This keeps the meatout of the drippings and allows the heat tocirculate better.
• Use a meat thermometer for the mostaccurate doneness. Insert it so the tip is inthe center of the largest muscle or thickestportion of the meat or poultry. Make surethe thermometer is not touching bone, fat,or the bottom of the pan.
Adjusting the oven temperature controlAlthough your new oven is properly adjustedto provide accurate temperatures, it maycook faster or slower than your old oven. If,after using the oven for a period of time, youare not satisfied with the baking/roastingresults, you can change the offset tempera-ture by following the steps below:
NOTE: DO NOT measure oven temperaturewith a thermometer. Opening the oven doorwill lower the oven temperature and give youan inaccurate reading. Also, the thermom-eter temperature reading will change as youroven cycles.

Broiling tips• Use the broiler pan and grid for broiling.
They are designed to drain extra liquid andgrease away from the cooking surface. This drainage helps prevent spatter, smoke, or fire.
• Do not cover the broiler grid with foil.• To make sure grease drains well , do
not use cookie sheets or similar pans forbroiling.
Energy saving tipsAlthough the energy used for cooking isusually a very small percentage of the totalenergy used in the home, cooking energycan be used efficiently. Here are some tipsto help you save energy when using yourcooking product:
Cooktop• Match the pan to the surface cooking
area size.• The pan should have a flat bottom,
straight sides, and a well-fitting lid.• To help shorten your cooking time, use
the least amount of liquid possible.• Preheat your pots and pans only when
recommended and for the shortest timepossible.
• Start your food on a higher heat setting, then turn the control to a lower setting tofinish cooking.
• Place a filled pan on the surface cookingarea before turning it on.
• Place food about 3 inches or more fromthe broil element.
• After broiling, remove the broiler panfrom the oven when you remove thefood. Drippings will bake on the pan ifyou leave it in the heated oven.
Oven• “Oven peeking” can make cooking
times longer and affect the food quality.• Rely on a timer to keep track of
cooking time.• Plan your meals for the most efficient use
of the oven by cooking more than onefood at a time, or baking while the ovenis still hot after cooking a meal.
• It is not necessary to preheat the ovenwhen broiling or roasting, unless yourrecipe recommends doing so.

Using the Self-CleaningCycleThe Self-Cleaning cycle saves you from the toil and mess that often come with hand-cleaningthe oven interior. Like the other functions of your oven, you operate the Self-Cleaning cyclewith the easy-to-use controls. Please review the instructions in this section to keep your ovenspotless.
Before you start
Before you start the Self-Cleaning cycle, make sure you:• Hand-clean the areas shown. They do
not get hot enough during the cleaningcycle for soil to burn away. Use hot waterand detergent or a soapy steel-wool padfor cleaning.NOTES:• DO NOT clean, move, or bend the
gasket. Poor cleaning, baking, androasting may result.
• DO NOT let water, cleaner, etc., enterslots on door and frame.
wWARNINGBurn Hazard
Do not touch the oven during the Self-Cleaning cycle.Keep children away from oven during Self-Cleaning cycle.Do not use commercial oven cleaners in your oven.Failure to follow these instructions can result in burns,or illness from inhaling dangerous fumes.

• Remove the broiler pan and grid andany pots and pans being stored inthe oven.
• Wipe up food spills containing sugar assoon as possible after the oven coolsdown. When sugar is heated to a hightemperature in the Self-Cleaning cycle, thehigh temperature can cause the sugar toburn and react with the porcelain. This cancause staining and etching or pitting.
• Wipe out any loose soil or grease. Thiswill help reduce smoke during the Self-Cleaning cycle.
• Remove the oven racks from the oven ifyou want them to remain shiny. You canclean the oven racks in the Self-Cleaningcycle, but they will become harder to slide.(See the “Cleaning chart” in the “Caring forYour Range” section.) If you clean racks inthe Self-Cleaning cycle, place them on the2nd and 4th rack guides. (Guides arecounted from bottom to top.)
• Heat and odors are normal during theSelf-Cleaning cycle. Keep the kitchen wellventilated by opening a window or byturning on a vent hood or other kitchenvent during the cycle.
39
NOTES:• Do not block the vent during the Self-
Cleaning cycle. Air must move freely forbest cleaning results.
• Do not leave any foil in the oven during theSelf-Cleaning cycle. Foil could burn or meltand damage the oven surface.

Special tips• Keep the kitchen well ventilated during the
Self-Cleaning cycle to help get rid of heat, odors, and smoke.
• After the oven cools to room tempera-ture, wipe up any residue or ash with adamp cloth or sponge. If any spots remain, clean with a mild abrasive cleanser orcleaning sponge.
• Clean the oven before it gets heavilysoiled. Cleaning a very soiled oven takeslonger and could cause an increasedamount of smoke.
How the cycle worksThe Self-Cleaning cycle uses very high heatto burn away soil and grease. During thecycle, the oven gets much hotter than itdoes for normal baking or broiling. This highheat breaks up the soil or grease and burnsit away.
Your oven is preset for a 31⁄2-hour Self-Cleaning cycle. However, you can adjustthe cycle time to the amount of soil in youroven. You can set the cycle anywherebetween 21⁄2 and 41⁄2 hours. (See “Settingthe controls.”)
The graph at the right is representativeof a normal, 31⁄2-hour Self-Cleaning cycle.Note that the heating stops 1⁄2 hour beforethe 31⁄2-hour setting is up to cool the ovenenough so the door can be unlocked.

For proper cleaning methods, please review “Cleaning tips.” Follow themeach time you use your cooktop. This willensure you get the best performance out ofyour cooktop, as well as preserve thatuniquely elegant look.
To avoid damaging the cooktop, followthese instructions:• Remove sugar spills and soils from the
cooktop while the surface is still warm toavoid pitting on the surface.
• Marks from sliding metal pans on thecooktop are difficult to remove completely.Use cooktop polishing creme to clean thearea. Several applications may benecessary.
